Abstract:Understanding the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of an urban region is vital for policy-making, urban management, and urban planning. Auditing socioeconomic and demographic patterns traditionally entails producing a large portion of data by human-participant surveys, which are usually costly and time consuming. Even with newly developed computational methods, amenity characteristics such as typeface, color, and graphic element choices are still missing at the city scale. However, they have a huge impact on personalized preferences. Currently, researchers tend to use large-scale street view imagery to uncover physical and socioeconomic patterns. In this research, we first propose a framework that uses deep convolutional neural network to recognize the typeface from street view imagery in London. Second, we analyze the relationship between 11 typefaces and the average household income in 77 wards of London. The result show that the typefaces used in the neighborhood are highly correlated with economic and demographic factors. Typeface could be an alternative metric to evaluate economic and demographic status in large-scale urban regions. More generally, typeface can also act as a key visual characteristic of a city.

Abstract:Urban land use is constantly changing via human activities. These changes are recorded by imprint data. Traditionally, urban dynamics studies focus on two-dimensional spatiotemporal analysis. Based on our best knowledge, there is no study in the literature that uses imprint data for better understanding urban dynamics. In this research, we propose a spatial–temporal–semantic triple analytical framework to better understand urban dynamics by making full use of the imprint data, toponyms. The framework includes a text classification method and geographical analysis methods to understand urban dynamics in depth. Based on the inherent temporal and spatial information, we enrich semantic information with street names to explain urban dynamics in multiple dimensions. Taking Hangzhou city as an example, we used street names to reproduce the city changes over the past century. The results obtained through analysis of street names may accurately reflect the real development process of Hangzhou. This research demonstrates that imprint data left by urban development may play a pivotal role in better understanding urban dynamics.

Abstract:Zones, cells, and parcels have long been regarded as the main units of analysis in urban modeling. However, only limited attention has been paid to street-level urban modeling. The emergence of fine-scale open and new data available from various sources has created substantial opportunities for research on urban modeling at the street level, particularly for modeling the spatiotemporal process of urban phenomena. In this paper, the street is adopted as the spatial unit of an urban model, and a conceptual framework for such modeling based on cellular automata is proposed. The validity of the proposed framework is verified by an empirical application to the urban space within the Fifth Ring Road in Beijing from 2014 to 2018. The results show that the density of points of interest simulated by the cellular automata model for 2018 is basically consistent with the actual distribution according to direct observation, and there is no significant difference in the proportion of high, medium, and low points of interest density streets between different ring roads. In addition, the deviation rate and Kappa index are 0.1171 and 0.97, respectively, indicating the proposed model can replicate historical patterns well and predict the transition of points of interest density at the street level. Subsequently, we considered three scenarios, adopting 2018 as the base year and using the proposed model to simulate the distribution of points of interest density in 2022 and the changes in points of interest density from 2018 to 2022. The conceptual framework and empirical application also provide support for urban planning and design based on the integration of linear public space and big data.

Abstract:This article seeks to fill a research gap in current scholarship by exploring the role of typography in place-making practices in transitional China. Based on fieldwork conducted in an aspiring new town in an underdeveloped city, I observe that a diversity of typographies from both the tradition of calligraphic writing and novel digital design are applied in making the new town. Drawing on the emergent field of typographic landscape and notions of indexicality and enregisterment in sociolinguistics, I investigate the potential historical, social, cultural and political meanings of various typographies of emplaced signage across the town. Through a culturally sensitive analysis of signage found in historical parks, government-authored promotion boards and commercial streets, I further demonstrate how patterned and value-laden typographic choices are made across the three domains and shed light on the ideologies which shape these choices in situated place-making practices. Lastly, it will be argued that the new town can be read as a heterotopia comprised of different spaces that are incompatible due to their differing world views and place-making positions. The implications of this constructed heterotopia for its relocated residents framed by wider themes of socialist civil education, market-driven economy and tourism development will also be briefly discussed.

Abstract:Rapid development of online economy has great impact on the everyday life. However, whether real space still matter on the location choice of these new economies remains as a controversial question. This research starts with spatial analysis on shared kitchen as an emerging new type of online catering space in Beijing across three scales: city, street, architecture. Using social media data and cellular signal data, different density factors are tested at city scale to explain the performance of these economies. Using space syntax model, the spatial accessibility of takeaway only, dine-in with takeaway service and conventional restaurants are compared in central and suburban areas. It is found that their different spatial logic: at city scale, takeaway only restaurants gathered in the high-density area, and diffused to the area with poor accessibility. At street and architectural scale, online catering in general shows higher dependence on accessibility, but there is a clear difference between central and suburban cases of takeaway only restaurants: in central areas, online catering could bear more disadvantageous positions like backstreet or under the ground of buildings than it in suburban case. Abstract:The street networks and the urban morphology are assumed to mutually influence each other. Via space syntax, this paper focuses on structural features and evolutionary guidelines of the street network in old Beijing city to examine what changes and what remains. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the deep-layer topological relationship of the street network can also clearly reveal the corresponding political, economic and cultural characteristics; (2) old Beijing city developed its grid-like street network over the past several centuries, which shows a good flexibility and continuity, but also with a long period of traffic pressure in history.
