Abstract:The focus of the building industry and research is shifting from delivering satisfactory spaces to going beyond what is merely acceptable with a wave of new research and practice dedicated to exploring how the built environment can support task performance and enhance people’s health and well-being. The present study addresses the role of acoustics in this paradigm shift. Indoor soundscape research has recently emerged as an approach that brings a perceptual perspective on building and room acoustics in order to shape built environments that “sound good” according to building occupants’ preference and needs. This paper establishes an initial discussion over some of the open questions in this field of research that is still in an embryonic stage. A thematic analysis of structured interviews with a panel of experts offered a range of perspectives on the characterization, management, and design of indoor soundscapes and health-related outcomes. The discussion pointed out the importance of both perceptual and multisensory research and integrated participatory design practices to enable a holistic view regarding the complex building–user interrelations and the design of just cities. Soundscape methodologies tailored to the peculiarities of indoor soundscapes can help to measure and predict the human perceptual response to the acoustic stimuli in context, thus reducing the risk of mismatches between expected and real building experiences. This perceptual perspective is expected to widen the scientific evidence for the negative and positive impacts of the acoustic environment on human health, well-being, and quality of life. This will support prioritizing the role of acoustics in building design and challenge many current design practices that are based on a noise control approach.

Abstract:The research purpose of architectural and environmental acoustics is to maintain a pleasant acoustic environment for human habitation and show solicitude for the auditory perception of human beings, so that they can enjoy music and other pleasant sound and shield off or reduce the disturbance of noise and vibration. A good acoustic living environment is an important precondition for ensuring human health and improving productivity and working efficiency as well as for benefiting thinking and study. This paper systematically introduces the research area, content and situation of architectural and environmental acoustics and its three main branches, namely, auditorium acoustics, noise control and soundscape, and presents some frontiers and hot points which must be noticed in the field of architectural and environmental acoustics. Meanwhile, some important research works completed by the authors and their team in this field are also described.
Research Progress On The Acoustic Environments Of Healthy Buildings

Abstract:Building and urban acoustic environments greatly contribute to the quality of healthy buildings. This paper first discusses the developmental transitions from noise control to soundscape construction, and the changing focus from negative effects on public health to the promotion of health benefits. During this transition, the impacts of acoustic environments on human health have been investigated from various research perspectives, from concept to theory to methods. In current soundscape research, sound environment designs are based on health concepts. Innovative results have been introduced from this focus. First, the impacts of soundscape perception on human health and the psychophysiological effects of soundscape have been extensively reviewed. Reduced negative soundscapes are significantly positively correlated with the self-reported health conditions of subjects. Especially, soundscapes reported as positive (e.g., pleasant and calm) are significantly positively correlated with environmental stress restoration. The physiology and neurophysiology of soundscapes are emerging subjects that require extensive further research. Research on the restorative effects of urban public open spaces has included the development of relevant theories and practice, experimental studies of restorative performance and its influencing factors, and sensitivity studies, which measure the response magnitude of physiological indicators to typical soundscapes. The restorative quality of public open spaces in the urban context is of particular interests. Soundscapes in public open spaces are known to directly affect the psychology, physiology, and attention span of individuals. They also exert an indirect recovery effect through audio-visual interactions. A study on the sensitivity study of physiological indicators analyzed the change of the physiological signals over time, the type of scenery, and the restoration effect was quantified from the relationships among different subjective scales. Stressed children exposed to different potentially restorative soundscapes perceive the restorative sound scenery differently from adults. The effect of noise on the cognitive performance of children is primarily reflected in the degree of subjective annoyance, and children's test performances do not significantly depend on the varying noise conditions. In specific spaces such as hospitals, the acoustic environment is known to affect inpatient health and the efficiency of hospital staff. Studies have confirmed that improving the acoustic environment benefits the resting ability, sleep, and mood of inpatients, and this can also improve the efficiency of hospital staff.With the broadening and deepening of acoustic environment research and the effective development of research tools, indicator systems and research paradigms will become more standardized. Such standardization will further deepen the research and lead to evaluative standards. Much scope remains for investigating the impact mechanism and efficiency of various soundscape restorative treatments in urban public open spaces. Furthermore, the health effects of soundscape treatments for other specific groups of people and other specific spaces should be elucidated. Finally, research should move from revealing the influence patterns and tendencies of soundscapes toward the active design of healthy acoustic environments.

Design choices related to noise management, speech privacy, speech security, and reverberation time not only influence the occupant's comfort but also impact the environment and the people involved in the construction process. As such, acoustic materials are pivotal in creating sustainable and healthy buildings. Beyond traditional acoustic considerations, broader aspects impacting occupants' experience, such as sensory perception and indoor air quality, must be evaluated. A significant emphasis is placed on biophilic design to foster a connection between the built environment and nature for enhanced well-being. Similarly, the environmental impacts of material choices and the transition to recycled products to reduce the industry's environmental footprint are essential considerations. Acoustic materials have a far-reaching impact on sustainable and healthy building design by addressing occupant comfort, experience, air quality, and the environmental implications of material choices. Abstract:Continuous urban densification exacerbates acoustic challenges for residents of housing complexes. They are confronted with higher noise immission from railway, road traffic, construction, as well as louder neighborhood acoustic environments. Thereby, not only noise immission indoors is associated with stress, annoyance, and sleep disturbance, but also the immediate outdoor living environment (e.g., courtyards, private gardens, and playgrounds, etc.) can be acoustically unpleasant and annoying. This non-exhaustive narrative review paper elaborates on the role of a number of design parameters on improving the quality of the outdoor soundscape of housing complexes: architectural and morphological design, facade material characteristics, balconies, greenery, ground, background sounds, and several factors concerning quality of sounds (e.g., multisensory perception, holistic design, the relevance of space, context, social factors, co-creation, etc.). It mainly covers literature including both acoustical (e.g., sound pressure level and room acoustical parameters) and human/perceptual (e.g., comfort and annoyance) factors. A series of recommendations are presented here as to how the semi-enclosed outdoor spaces in the proximity of residential complexes can be acoustically improved.
Sound Environments in Large Public Buildings for Crowd Transit: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Sound environments in large public buildings are likely to be different from those of performance spaces, as well as those not specifically designed for acoustic “performance”, but where sounds still play an important role because of the function they can promote (or disrupt). The aim of this study was identifying common strategies and empirical approaches researchers have been implementing for these acoustically complex enclosures and to provide some methodological indications for future studies on the topic. Studies conducted in three building types for crowd transit, such as museums/exhibition spaces, shopping malls, and transportation hubs/stations, which were collecting data about either physical outcomes or individual responses for such sound environments, were selected. The Scopus databases were searched for peer-reviewed journal papers published in English without time limitations. An additional manual search was performed on the reference lists of the retrieved items. The general consideration on inclusion was to meet the requirement that the case belonged to the three building types, and then the specific inclusion criteria were: (1) including at least an objective acoustic measure of the space; or (2) including at least a subjective measure of the space. The search returned 1060 results; after removing duplicates, two authors screened titles and abstracts and selected 117 papers for further analysis. Twenty-six studies were eventually included. Due to the limited number of items and differences in measures across studies, a quantitative meta-analysis could not be performed, and a qualitative approach was adopted instead. The most commonly used objective measures were SPL, and more specifically often considered as LAeq, and T. The intervals across studies were currently of inconsistency, and the selection is recommended to take space scale factor into account. The used subjective measures can be classified into four categories as annoyance, affective quality, room-acoustic quality, and acoustic spatiality. Four basic perceptual assessments concerning dynamic contents are accordingly suggested as “annoying-not annoying”, “crowded-uncrowded”, “long-short (reverberation)”, and “far awaynearby”. The other descriptors can be project-specific. The methodologies involve measurement, questionnaire/interview, listening test, and software simulation. It is necessary for the former two to consider temporal and spatial features of such spaces, and the adoption of the latter two will lead to better understanding of users’ exposure in such spaces, e.g., acoustic sequences and user amount. The outputs of investigations inform that background noise level, e.g., 90 dB in museum/exhibition spaces, and sound reverberation, e.g., 4.0 to 5.0 s in shopping malls and transportation hubs/station, are of fundamental importance to the design of such spaces. Sufficient acoustic comfort can be achieved with integrated design of indoor soundscape.

Abstract:This paper analyses the case study results in eight types of public buildings, including railway stations, shopping malls, libraries, open plan offices, football stadia, swimming spaces,dining spaces, and churches, aiming at examining relationships between subjective and objective indices, as well as principles and framework for creating comfortable acoustic environments in such' non-acoustic' buildings. It is revealed that acoustic quality is an important consideration in these buildings, and it may vary considerably with the same objective acoustic indices such as sound pressure level and reverberation time. Key factors to be considered include social demographic background, psychological adaptation, sound preference, preference of acoustic treatments, interactions between acoustic and other environmental factors, and possible health effects of unsatisfactory acoustic quality.

Abstract:Many urban areas are densely populated, often resulting in increases in various types of environmental pollution. Correspondingly, urban acoustic sustainability has become an important concern, especially in urban residential areas. This study aims at systematically examining the urban acoustic sustainability, from three main and typical facets. Firstly, it focuses on people's perception, trying to understand the effects of behaviour/experience in residential areas. Secondly, a series of building life cycle analysis and building acoustic performances are examined in an integrative way, demonstrating that acoustic factors should be combined into the overall environmental sustainability consideration. Finally, a typical kind of renewable energy technique, wind farms, are studied from an acoustic viewpoint, showing that further attention should be paid to noise effects, especially at the planning stage. Overall, whilst the acoustic effects in the overall urban sustainability might not be always straightforward, longterm effects and multi-factors should be considered.

Abstract:Noise has been proved to be a risk factor of physiological and psychological health. Therefore, creating a high-quality acoustic environment for people is particularly important. The aims of this study are to explore the basic elements, propose a conceptual framework, and identify the definition of a healthy acoustic environment. Through the method of grounded theory, 75 respondents participated in interviews. The results revealed that (1) "sound sources and acoustic environment," "people's demands," "criteria and standards of a healthy acoustic environment," "matching process," "secondary fitting process," "context," and "acoustic environment quality" are the basic elements of a healthy acoustic environment; (2) "matching process" and "secondary fitting process" connect all the other categories and reflect the processes by which a healthy acoustic environment is judged; (3) based on the associations revealed in the framework, a healthy acoustic environment is defined as a supportive acoustic environment that can match people's physiological, psychological, and behavioral demands in context, and that also fits the criteria and standards. The proposal of a conceptual model for a healthy acoustic environment can provide a new perspective on designing and establishing a high-quality acoustic environment required by people in the near future.

Abstract:Soundscapes are an important factor related to audio-visual perception and human health; however, research on how local residents perceive the audio-visual environment remains insufficient. This study, therefore, was mainly conducted to examine the effects of sound sources, the sociodemographic factors of the local residents, visual aesthetic quality and quiet landscape experiences on rural soundscapes through on-site and in-home questionnaire surveys focusing on three components of a soundscape. The results indicated that although there were significant differences in the audio-visual perceptions among typical locations, road traffic sounds were the dominant sound category affecting acoustic comfort on site and in memory. The residents' age affected the acoustic comfort of background sounds and sound marks in certain ways, while positive landscape experiences made sound marks predominantly perceived and the acoustic comfort of each sound category remarkably improved. This study also developed an agile practical soundscape resource optimization process through an audio-visual perceptual investigation.

Abstract:Much attention has been paid to acoustic spaces such as concert halls and recording studios, whereas research on nonacoustic buildings/spaces has been rather limited, especially from the viewpoint of acoustic comfort. In this research a series of case studies has been carried out on this topic, considering various spaces including shopping mall atrium spaces, library reading rooms, football stadia, swimming spaces, churches, dining spaces, as well as urban open public spaces. The studies focus on the relationships between objective acoustic indices such as sound pressure level and reverberation time and perceptions of acoustic comfort. The results show that the acoustic atmosphere is an important consideration in such spaces and the evaluation of acoustic comfort may vary considerably even if the objective acoustic indices are the same. It is suggested that current guidelines and technical regulations are insufficient in terms of acoustic design of these spaces, and the relationships established from the case studies between objective and subjective aspects would be useful for developing further design guidelines. Abstract:Background: The field of acoustic ecology emerged from Simon Fraser University in the late 1960s during which time R. Murray Schafer and the World Soundscape Project studied everyday soundscapes and the rise of urban noise. While it was an innovative approach to understanding the relationship between humans and their environments, it reproduced the dominant frameworks of this period. Analysis: This article argues that contemporary acoustic ecology discourse continues to frame noise, silence, and urban acoustic design through a white normative and colour-blind listening framework. This article examines dominant authorship and citation practices within leading journals that publish soundscape literature as well as sound mapping practices. Conclusion: After also surveying seldom-cited soundscape research that interrogates the environmental listening and sound-making practices of BIPOC and marginalized communities, the article concludes that there is a need for contemporary soundscape research to incorporate more intersectional and decolonial modes of environmental listening.
Associations Between Positive Health-Related Effects and Soundscapes Perceptual Constructs: A Systematic Review

Abstract:In policy-making and research alike, environmental sounds are often considered only as psychophysical stressors, leading to adverse health effects. The soundscape approach, on the other hand, aims to extend the scope of sound-related research to consider sounds as resources, promoting healthy and supportive environments. The ISO 12913-1 standard defined soundscapes as acoustic environments “as perceived by people, in context.” The aim of this study was assessing associations between positive soundscapes (e.g., pleasant, calm, less annoying) and positive health-related effects (e.g., increased restoration, reduced stress-inducing mechanisms, etc.). Studies collecting data about individual responses to urban acoustic environments, and individual responses on psychophysical well-being were selected, looking at cases where positive effects were observed. The Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed databases were searched for peer-reviewed journal papers published in English between 1 January 1991 and 31 May 2018, with combinations of the keywords “soundscape” and at least one among “health”, “well-being” or “quality of life.” An additional manual search was performed on the reference lists of the retrieved items. Inclusion criteria were: (1) including at least one measure of soundscape dimensions as per the ISO 12913-1 definition; (2) including at least one health-related measure (either physiological or psychological); (3) observing/discussing a “positive” effect of the soundscape on the health-related outcome. The search returned 130 results; after removing duplicates, two authors screened titles and abstracts and selected 19 papers for further analysis. Seven studies were eventually included, with 2783 participants in total. Each study included at least a valence-related soundscape measure. Regarding the health-related measures, four studies included physiological monitoring and the remaining three included self-reported psychological measures. Positive soundscapes were associated with faster stress-recovery processes in laboratory experiments, and better self-reported health conditions in large-scale surveys. Due to the limited number of items and differences in measures across studies, no statistical analysis was performed, and a qualitative approach to data synthesis was sought. Results support the claim that, in contrast with looking at noise only as an environmental stressor, sound perception can act as an enhancer of the human experience in the urban realm, from a health-related point of view.

Abstract:Introduction While the acoustic environment in the cities correlates with various health-related problems, health benefits of natural sounds are proven. These positive effects of the sounds of nature should probably be taken seriously in urban design and urban renewal projects. Objectives The aim of this study was to review the paradigm of natural soundscapes in the cities, psychological effects of natural soundscapes and the potential urban recommendations for such architecture design. Methods We conducted a comprehensive review of the scientific literature using Web databases with the following keywords: natural soundscapes, natural sound, urban design, and mental health. Results Our research found that improving the urban environment soundscape for the well-being of city dwellers has become one of the most pressing challenges of modern times. In a growing number of published studies, positive psychological effects of natural soundscapes are explored using various methods such as questionnaires, biofeedback sensors coupled with virtual reality experiences in laboratories, and quantification of the prevalence of restorative acoustic environments in parks. In a recent study (2023), Jian Kang from the United Kingdome, reported that "by taking psycho-acoustical, neural and physiological, and contextual factors into account, the European Research Council Soundscape Indices project will adequately reflect levels of human comfort, to integrate side-by-side with (and eventually replace) decibel-based metrics into existing (international) regulations". The same paper highlighted how the transition from fighting noise pollution to creating soundscapes is key. Conclusions Architects should develop mandatory guidelines regarding the spatial planning focusing on managing natural soundscapes in cities. Various sites such as green urban public spaces that offers exposure to natural sounds should be an integral part of the urban environment. These areas must be with a high abundance of natural sound (geophony and bio phony) and a low anthropogenic sound to enhance human physical and psychological health. Abstract:With the well-established importance of healthy indoor acoustic environments, this study aims to investigate how occupants evaluate, understand, and characterise healthy indoor acoustic environments in residential buildings. A mixed-method approach with both qualitative and quantitative study designs was used. For the qualitative study, interview transcripts from 35 respondents were coded using a grounded theory approach. In the subsequent quantitative study, a questionnaire was developed based on the interview data, and the answers of 720 participants were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results presented the elements, conceptual framework, and evaluation model of a healthy indoor acoustic environment in residential buildings from the occupant's perspective. Among all elements, Attachment , Privacy , Autonomy , and Controllability were identified as the four characteristics of a healthy indoor acoustic environment at home. Controllability , which is the most significant factor (total effect size = 0.475), had a positive influence on the evaluation of healthy indoor acoustic environments in residential buildings by reducing negative emotions, physical discomfort, and behavioural disturbances caused by noise. Attachment also contributed favourably to the evaluation, particularly in individuals aged 18 to 29. The evaluation model varied according to gender and age. Women exhibited more complex evaluation mechanisms and diverse understandings than men, both of which tended to become simpler with age. The results of this study provide a theoretical reference for designing acoustic environments for healthy housing.

Abstract:Protected areas are critical locations worldwide for biodiversity preservation and offer important opportunities for increasingly urbanized humans to experience nature. However, biodiversity preservation and visitor access are often at odds and creative solutions are needed to safeguard protected area natural resources in the face of high visitor use. Managing human impacts to natural soundscapes could serve as a powerful tool for resolving these conflicting objectives. Here, we review emerging research that demonstrates that the acoustic environment is critical to wildlife and that sounds shape the quality of nature-based experiences for humans. Human-made noise is known to affect animal behavior, distributions and reproductive success, and the organization of ecological communities. Additionally, new research suggests that interactions with nature, including natural sounds, confer benefits to human welfare termed psychological ecosystem services. In areas influenced by noise, elevated human-made noise not only limits the variety and abundance of organisms accessible to outdoor recreationists, but also impairs their capacity to perceive the wildlife that remains. Thus soundscape changes can degrade, and potentially limit the benefits derived from experiences with nature via indirect and direct mechanisms. We discuss the effects of noise on wildlife and visitors through the concept of listening area and demonstrate how the perceptual worlds of both birds and humans are reduced by noise. Finally, we discuss how management of soundscapes in protected areas may be an innovative solution to safeguarding both and recommend several key questions and research directions to stimulate new research.
