Abstract:Abstract Forest soils play an important role in controlling global warming by reducing atmospheric methane (CH 4 ) concentrations. However, little attention has been paid to how nitrogen (N) deposition may alter microorganism communities that are related to the CH 4 cycle or CH 4 oxidation in subtropical forest soils. We investigated the effects of N addition (0, 30, 60, or 90 kg N ha −1 yr −1 ) on soil CH 4 flux and methanotroph and methanogen abundance, diversity, and community structure in a Moso bamboo ( Phyllostachys edulis ) forest in subtropical China. N addition significantly increased methanogen abundance but reduced both methanotroph and methanogen diversity. Methanotroph and methanogen community structures under the N deposition treatments were significantly different from those of the control. In N deposition treatments, the relative abundance of Methanoculleus was significantly lower than that in the control. Soil pH was the key factor regulating the changes in methanotroph and methanogen diversity and community structure. The CH 4 emission rate increased with N addition and was negatively correlated with both methanotroph and methanogen diversity but positively correlated with methanogen abundance. Overall, our results suggested that N deposition can suppress CH 4 uptake by altering methanotroph and methanogen abundance, diversity, and community structure in subtropical Moso bamboo forest soils.

Abstract:Bamboo forest, especially Moso bamboo forest Phyllostachys heterocycla var. pubescens, has a powerful carbon sequestration capability and plays an important role in the global carbon sink. This research examines the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of Moso bamboo aboveground carbon storage AGC in Anji County of Zhejiang Province, China. Five dates of Landsat Thematic Mapper images and field measurements were used to estimate Moso bamboo AGC between 1986 and 2008. Geostatistics were used to analyse AGC spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The results indicate that Moso bamboo AGC increases gradually and its spatial heterogeneity over five dates has moderate autocorrelation. Spatial heterogeneity increased dramatically after 1986, implying the influence of random factors such as management on the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of AGC. This research provides an alternative insight into the carbon cycling process of a bamboo forest ecosystem, and has implications for ongoing efforts in regard to carbon sequestration management.
Biochar amendments increase soil organic carbon storage and decrease global warming potentials of soil CH4 and N2O under N addition in a subtropical Moso bamboo plantation

Abstract:BackgroundNitrogen (N) deposition affects soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while biochar application reduces GHG emissions in agricultural soils. However, it remains unclear whether biochar amendment can alleviate the promoting effects of N input on GHG emissions in forest soils. Here, we quantify the separate and combined effects of biochar amendment (0, 20, and 40 t·ha−1) and N addition (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg N·ha−1·yr−1) on soil GHG fluxes in a long-term field experiment at a Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) plantation.ResultsLow and moderate N inputs (≤60 kg N·ha−1·yr−1) significantly increase mean annual soil carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions by 17.0%–25.4% and 29.8%–31.2%, respectively, while decreasing methane (CH4) uptake by 12.4%–15.9%, leading to increases in the global warming potential (GWP) of soil CH4 and N2O fluxes by 32.4%–44.0%. Moreover, N addition reduces soil organic carbon (C; SOC) storage by 0.2%–6.5%. Compared to the control treatment, biochar amendment increases mean annual soil CO2 emissions, CH4 uptake, and SOC storage by 18.4%–25.4%, 7.6%–15.8%, and 7.1%–13.4%, respectively, while decreasing N2O emissions by 17.6%–19.2%, leading to a GWP decrease of 18.4%–21.4%. Biochar amendments significantly enhance the promoting effects of N addition on soil CO2 emissions, while substantially offsetting the promotion of N2O emissions, inhibition of CH4 uptake, and decreased SOC storage, resulting in a GWP decrease of 9.1%–30.3%. Additionally, soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes are significantly and positively correlated with soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and pH. Meanwhile, N2O emissions have a significant and positive correlation with soil MBC and a negative correlation with pH.ConclusionsBiochar amendment can increase SOC storage and offset the enhanced GWP mediated by elevated N deposition and is, thus, a potential strategy for increasing soil C sinks and decreasing GWPs of soil CH4 and N2O under increasing atmospheric N deposition in Moso bamboo plantations.

Abstract:Abstract Ecosystem-level effects of increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on the phosphorus (P) cycle and P use strategy are poorly understood. Here, we conducted a seven year N-addition experiment to comprehensively evaluate the effects of N deposition on P limitation, cycling, and use strategy in a subtropical Moso bamboo forest. N addition significantly increased foliar litterfall by 4.7%–21.7% and subsequent P return to the soil by 49.0%–70.1%. It also increased soil acidity, acid phosphatase activity, and soil microbial biomass P, which substantially contributed to a significantly increased soil P availability and largely alleviated the P limitation. This resulted in a significant decrease in the foliar P-resorption efficiency and the abundance and colonization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Our results indicate that N deposition can reduce plant internal cycling while enhancing ecosystem-scale cycling of P in Moso bamboo forests. This suggests a shift in P use from a ‘conservative consumption’ strategy to a ‘resource spending’ strategy. Our findings shed new light on N deposition effects on P cycle processes and P use strategy at the ecosystem scale under increasing atmospheric N deposition.

Nitrogen Deposition Enhances Photosynthesis in Moso Bamboo but Increases Susceptibility to Other Stress Factors

Abstract:Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition can increase the susceptibility of vascular plants to other stresses, but the physiological basis of such a response remains poorly understood. This study was designed to clarify the physiological mechanisms and to evaluate bioindicators of N deposition impact on vascular plants. We evaluate multiple physiological responses to ~4 years of simulated additional N deposition (30-90 kg N ha-1 year-1) on three age-classes (1a, 3a, and 5a) of Moso bamboo. A saturating response to the additional N deposition was found both in foliar N concentration and in Pn. However, 3- and 5-year-old bamboo seemed to be less tolerant to extremely high N deposition than 1-year-old bamboo since they were saturated at a lower N addition. Furthermore, C/N/P stoichiometric ratios were very sensitive to N deposition in all three-age classes of bamboo, but the responses to N deposition in the various age-classes were diverse. We also found that the highest additional N deposition suppressed stomatal conductance and transpiration rate, suggesting an induced water stress. The stress induced by the high N load was also seen in photochemistry, where it reduced potential and actual photosynthetic use of light energy, diminished photo-protection capacity, and increased risk of the photo-damage. High additional N deposition contributed to a decrease in the foliar soluble protein contents and to an increase in the peroxidase activity (POD). Our study suggested, for the first time, that although the photosynthetic rate was enhanced by the increased N deposition in Moso bamboo, long-term high N load causes negative effects, such as damage to photosystem II. In Moso bamboo photochemical parameters are more sensitive to N deposition than photosynthetic rate or foliar N concentration. Furthermore, plant age should be taken into account when assessing plants' susceptibility to changes in global change drivers, such as N deposition. These findings facilitate the revealing of the risks potentially caused to vascular plants by increased N deposition before any visible symptoms of injury are seen.
Enhanced Nitrogen Fertilizer Input Alters Soil Carbon Dynamics in Moso Bamboo Forests, Impacting Particulate Organic and Mineral-Associated Carbon Pools

Abstract:The application of nitrogen fertilizer is crucial in the cultivation of bamboo forests, and comprehending the alterations in soil organic carbon (SOC) due to nitrogen application is essential for monitoring soil quality. Predicting the dynamics of soil carbon stock involves analyzing two components: particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC). This study aimed to investigate the impact of high nitrogen inputs on SOC stock in Moso bamboo forests located in southwestern China. The research focused on analyzing changes in soil chemical properties, SOC content, and its components (POC and MAOC), as well as microbial biomass in the surface layer (0–10 cm) under different nitrogen applications (0, 242, 484, and 726 kg N ha−1 yr−1). The results indicate that nitrogen application significantly reduced the SOC content, while concurrently causing a significant increase in POC content and a decrease in MAOC content within the Moso bamboo forest (p < 0.05). The HM treatment notably increased the NO3−-N content to 2.15 mg/kg and decreased the NH4+-N content to 11.29 mg/kg, although it did not significantly influence the microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN). The LN and MN treatments significantly reduced the MBC and MBN contents (71.6% and 70.8%, 62.5% and 56.8%). Nitrogen application significantly increased the Na+ concentration, with a peak observed under the LN treatment (135.94 mg/kg, p < 0.05). The MN treatment significantly increased the concentrations of Fe3+ and Al3+ (p 0.05). Correlation and redundancy analyses (RDAs) revealed that the increase in annual litterfall did not significantly correlate with the rise in POC, and changes in extractable cations were not significantly correlated with the decrease in MAOC. Soil nitrogen availability, MBC, and MBN were identified as the primary factors affecting POC and MAOC content. In conclusion, the application of nitrogen has a detrimental impact on the soil organic carbon (SOC) of Moso bamboo forests. Consequently, it is imperative to regulate fertilization levels in order to preserve soil quality when managing these forests. Our research offers a theoretical foundation for comprehending and forecasting alterations in soil carbon stocks within bamboo forest ecosystems, thereby bolstering the sustainable management of Moso bamboo forests.

Abstract:Elevated nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) depositions have greatly affected belowground carbon processes in forest ecosystems. However, open questions still remained on the effects of N and P depositions on belowground carbon processes, including soil respiration (RS), its source components—autotrophic respiration (RA) and heterotrophic respiration (RH), and total belowground carbon allocation (TBCA) in Moso bamboo forests—one of the most important forest types with wide distributions in subtropical China. To fill this knowledge gap, a two-year N, P, and NP experiment was conducted in Moso bamboo forests. Results showed that RS, RA, and RH had a strong seasonal variability and were exponentially correlated with soil temperature. N and P depositions did not change RS and RA. However, P deposition increased RH due to the stimulation of microbial activities, indicating a significant soil carbon loss under P deposition. N and P depositions did not affect TBCA. However, NP deposition significantly increased root carbon-use efficiency. Net ecosystem production (NEP) varied from 198 ± 104 to 529 ± 225 g C m−2 year−1, indicating that Moso bamboo is an important carbon sink. P deposition marginally decreased NEP, while N and NP depositions did not affect NEP, which indicates that N deposition alleviated the suppression of P deposition on NEP. These findings highlight the inconsistent responses of RA, RH, and NEP to N, P, and NP depositions, which should be differently considered to increase the accuracy of predicting belowground carbon dynamics.

Abstract:Abstract Aims Moso bamboo expansions into Japanese cedar forests are common. The expansion effects on soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions have not been thoroughly understood, and the underlying microbial mechanisms remain unclear. Methods We studied bacterial and fungal contribution to soil N2O emissions under moso bamboo or Japanese cedar by applying bacterial or fungal inhibitors using streptomycin and iprodione, respectively. Soil N2O emissions were measured and the relative contribution of bacteria and fungi to soil N2O emissions was calculated. Important Findings N2O emission from soil with moso bamboo was significantly higher than under Japanese cedar. Compared with control, bacterial or fungal inhibitor or their combination decreased N2O emissions, indicating substantial contribution of microbial activities to N2O emissions. However, the relative contribution of bacteria and fungi to N2O emissions was not affected by plants. Soil organic carbon, total and ammonium nitrogen were lower in soil under moso bamboo than Japanese cedar, suggesting faster microbial decomposition under moso bamboo. Fungal inhibitor and plants interactively affected soil pH, total phosphorus, and ammonium nitrogen, while bacterial inhibitor and plants interactively affected total nitrogen, indicating substantial dependence of effects by microbial communities on plant species. Moso bamboo and Japanese cedar differed in their effects on soil N2O emissions with higher emissions under moso bamboo. Stimulation of N2O emission under moso bamboo might occur due to higher nitrogen mineralization and subsequent denitrification induced by high root exudation. These results highlight the need to consider the effect of species shifts on N2O emissions in forests.

Abstract:Quantifying the rapidly increasing nitrous oxide emission from excessive nitrogen fertilizer input is a pressing demand for reducing greenhouse gas in cleaner agricultural production. The purpose of this work is to assess the nitrous oxide emission from the intensively fertilized bamboo plantations to better understand the mitigation potential of fertilizer management, and to develop an approach for advancing the site-specific emission factors considering influences of climate and soil conditions. Based on the commonly adopted fertilization practices, the biogeochemical model DeNitrification–DeComposition was adjusted and validated to estimate and analyze nitrous oxide emission under four typical fertilizer management scenarios, namely fertilizer input reduction, split fertilization, deeper placement, and slow-release fertilizers. The simulation results show that the tested fertilizer management practices present great potential for reducing nitrous oxide emissions whereas mitigation effect of each adaptation depends on the site-specific conditions. In the cases of China, fertilizer reduction and adaptation with slow-release fertilizers application are shown to be the most cost-beneficial fertilization options for nitrous oxide mitigation in humid and arid regions, respectively. The highest mitigation achievable ranged from 60.3% (humid coast) to 92.9% (arid inland) compared to the current practice with excessive fertilization. If these adapted fertilization practices are implemented at the national scale, approximately 8.02–11.38 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalents per year of nitrous oxide emission could be reduced in 2030, which is 4.0%–5.7% of the total nitrous oxide emission from China's upland cropping system. The results indicate the critical importance of site-specific fertilizer management on reducing nitrous oxide emission in bamboo production. By considering the site-specific conditions, the overall biogeochemical modelling approach could serve as a more effective tool than the commonly used emission factors to quantify emission and screen fertilizer management options in cleaner agricultural production.

Abstract:Excessive fertilizer use has been recognized as a key factor in increasing agricultural and forestry greenhouse gases ( GHG) emission . Previous studies found that proper fertilizer using control strategy can reduce agricultural CO2 , N2 O , CH4 emission , however , influence crop yields as well . Bamboo is an important economic plant in China , which has been intensively cultivated in recent years to satisfy increasing social demands of bamboo products . To maintain rapid growth of bamboo , the fertilizer using amount in bamboo forest is significantly higher than other human-planted forests such as Pinus massoniana and eucalyptus forest . Therefore , it is necessary to explore a sustainable fertilizer management approach which could achieve the optimum balance between low GHG emission and high production in bamboo forest . The purpose of this study is to develop a sustainable fertilizer management approach by estimating the impact of different fertilization practices on GHG emission and biomass production of bamboo forest comprehensively . It is supposed to reduce current GHG emission from bamboo plantation without inhibiting bamboo production . Integrated with the surveys/statistics data , the DNDC ( denitrification-decomposition) biogeochemical model was applied to simulate seven typical fertilization scenarios of a Moso bamboo forest in Anji County , Zhejiang Province during 2000-2010 . The fertilization scenarios were designed by different fertilizer types ( commercial organic compound fertilizer , cow manure , ammonium bicarbonate) and application dosages ( medium , low , high) . Three indicators were adopted for the assessment :1) the global warming potential (GWP) to assess the total CO 2 and N2 O emission from studied bamboo plantation; 2) the net primary production ( NPP) to assess the bamboo production;3) the GHG emission per bamboo biomass increments ( Cflux/Cbiomass ) . All the indicator values were calculated from the DNDC modeling results . According to the assessment results , manure had the strongest effect on reducing GHG emission by increasing the soil organic carbon ( SOC ) , and the GWP under high amount of commercial organic fertilizer and manure application ( scenario M H) decreased to -11.3 t/( hm2.a) while the value under none fertilization condition was 1.7 t/( hm2. a ) ; the inorganic N fertilizer showed no obvious impact on CO 2 emission but had strong effect on stimulating N2 O emissions , and the high amount of inorganic N fertilizer ( scenario ABH) led to a 12.2 times higher net GWP than the situation without fertilization , which was recognized as the most negative scenario for low-carbon fertilizer management . Under seven fertilization scenarios , the bamboo biomass increments showed no obvious difference compared with the situation without fertilization . However , the NPP under the M scenario ( common amount of commercial organic fertilizer and manure) was slightly higher than other scenarios with the value of 4.71 t/( hm2.a) , indicating that organic fertilizers and manure have stronger effect on improving bamboo production . Without inhibiting bamboo production , the high amount of manure application resulted in the lowest net GWP for per net primary production increment ( -2.4 kg/kg) , which had the most significant GHG reduction among all other scenarios . As a consequence , organic fertilizer shows more potential on reducing CO 2 , N2 O emission without decreasing bamboo production . From the GHG emission reduction perspective in sustainable fertilizer management for bamboo forest , advocating organic fertilizer application and reducing inorganic N fertilizer use can be a plausible approach towards the dual objectives of high bamboo production and GHG emission reduction .
Full phenology cycle carbon flux dynamics and driving mechanism of Moso bamboo forest

Abstract:Introduction: Moso bamboo forests, widely distributed in subtropical regions, are increasingly valued for their strong carbon sequestration capacity. However, the carbon flux variations and the driving mechanisms of Moso bamboo forest ecosystems of each phenology period have not been adequately explained. Methods: Hence, this study utilizes comprehensive observational data from a Moso bamboo forest eddy covariance observation for the full phenological cycle (2011-2015), fitting a light response equation to elucidate the evolving dynamics of carbon fluxes and photosynthetic characteristics throughout the entire phenological cycle, and employing correlation and path analysis to reveal the response mechanisms of carbon fluxes to both biotic and abiotic factors. Results: The results showed that, First, the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of Moso bamboo forest exhibits significant variations across six phenological periods, with LS OFF demonstrating the highest NEE at -23.85 ± 12.61 gC·m -2 ·5day -1 , followed by LS ON at -19.04 ± 11.77 gC·m -2 ·5day -1 and FG ON at -17.30 ± 9.58 gC·m -2 ·5day -1 , while NF OFF have the lowest value with 3.37 ± 8.24 gC·m -2 ·5day -1 . Second, the maximum net photosynthetic rate (P max ) and apparent quantum efficiency (α) fluctuated from 0.42 ± 0.20 (FG ON ) to 0.75 ± 0.24 mg·m -2 ·s -1 (NF OFF ) and from 2.3 ± 1.3 (NF OFF ) to 3.3 ± 1.8 μg·μmol -1 (LS OFF ), respectively. Third, based on the path analysis, soil temperature was the most important driving factor of photosynthetic rate and NEE variation, with path coefficient 0.81 and 0.55, respectively, followed by leaf area index (LAI), air temperature, and vapor pressure difference, and precipitation. Finally, interannually, increased LAI demonstrated the potential to enhance the carbon sequestration capability of Moso bamboo forests, particularly in off-years, with the highest correlation coefficient with NEE (-0.59) among the six factors. Discussion: The results provide a scientific basis for carbon sink assessment of Moso bamboo forests and provide a reference for developing Moso bamboo forest management strategies.

Abstract:The accumulation of phytolith-occluded carbon (PhytOC) in Moso bamboo could be a novel long-term carbon sequestration strategy. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of temperature change and different fertilization on PhytOC accumulation. The pot experiment was established with different fertilization (including control (CK), nitrogen fertilizers (N), silicon fertilizers (Si), and a combination of nitrogen and silicon (NSi)) under high- and low-temperature. Despite the different fertilization, the PhytOC accumulation of the high-temperature group increases by 45.3% on average compared with the low-temperature group, suggesting higher temperature is greatly beneficial to the PhytOC accumulation. Fertilization significantly increases the accumulation of PhytOC (increased by 80.7% and 48.4% on average for the low- and high-temperature group, respectively) compared with CK. However, the N treatment increased both Moso bamboo biomass and PhytOC accumulation. The difference in the accumulation of PhytOC in Si and NSi was insignificant, indicating the combination of N and Si didn't bring extra benefit to PhytOC accumulation compared to Si fertilizer alone. These results indicated the application of nitrogen fertilizer is a practical and effective method for enhancing long-term carbon sequestration for Moso bamboo. Based on our study, we conclude that global warming poses a positive effect on promoting the long-term carbon sequestration of Moso bamboo.
Biochar Decreases Soil N2O Emissions in Moso Bamboo Plantations Through Decreasing Labile N Concentrations, N-cycling Enzyme Activities and Nitrification/denitrification Rates

Abstract:Biochar application has been shown to be effective in mitigating soil N2O emission in agricultural soils. However, the effect of biochar on soil N2O emission in subtropical plantations and the underlining mechanisms are poorly understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of biochar application rates (0, 5 and 15 t ha(-1)) on soil properties and N2O emissions within a Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) plantation in a 24-month field trial. Biochar application significantly (P < 0.05) decreased soil N2O emission, with the reduction rate positively related to the biochar application rate. The reduction in N2O emission by biochar application diminished over time. Biochar did not affect soil temperature (at 5 cm depth), and there were no significant relationships between N2O emission and either soil moisture content or soil microbial biomass C. However, biochar application significantly (P < 0.05) increased the water soluble organic C but decreased soil NH4+-N, NO3- -N and water soluble organic N (WSON) concentrations, soil urease and protease activities, and soil gross nitrification and denitrification rates. Soil N2O flux was positively (P < 0.05) correlated with soil NH4+-N, NO3- -N and WSON concentrations, soil urease and protease activities, and soil gross nitrification and denitrification rates, regardless of the treatment. Structural equation modeling suggests that biochar application decreased soil N2O emissions directly by decreasing soil gross nitrification and denitrification rates, and indirectly by decreasing concentrations of NH4+-N, NO3- -N and WSON, and the activities of urease and protease. We conclude that biochar application decreased soil N2O emission in the Moso bamboo plantation by decreasing labile N concentrations, N-cycling enzyme activities and nitrification/denitrification rates. Our findings suggest that biochar application can be an effective method to mitigate soil N2O emission in subtropical plantations.

Abstract:While there is a sound understanding of the range of mechanisms by which biochar can contribute to the mitigation of soil N2O emissions, a paucity of information remains on the efficacy and mechanisms associated with biochar-based fertilizer (BF). The present 12-month field trial aimed to: (1) investigate the responses of the seasonal variations in soil N2O emissions and environmental factors, including soil temperature and moisture content, concentrations of NH4+-N, NO3--N, water-soluble organic N (WSON), microbial biomass N (MBN), water-soluble organic C (WSOC) and microbial biomass C (MBC), and urease and protease activities, to application of BF, chemical fertilizer (CF) and a mixture of BF and CF (BCF) within a Moso bamboo plantation, and (2) reveal contributions of variation in soil properties to change in soil N2O emissions. The fertilized treatments matched doses of N, P and K among BF, CF and BCF, with an unfertilized treatment as a control. Compared to the control, BF treatment decreased soil N2O emissions (P < 0.05), whereas treatments of CF and BCF enhanced soil N2O emissions (P < 0.05). Soil N2O emissions were predominantly related to the soil temperature (P < 0.01), and correlated with soil WSON concentration and soil urease and protease activities in all fertilized treatments (P < 0.05). In addition, BF treatment markedly (P < 0.05) reduced soil WSON concentration, as well as soil urease and protease activities, whereas the CF and BCF treatments enhanced them (P < 0.05). Results of structural equation modelling indicated that the mechanisms by which BF decreased soil N2O emissions within the subtropical Moso bamboo plantation was via lowering WSON concentration and N-cycling enzyme activity in soils. In conclusion, results of the present work indicated that BF application could provide an important management strategy for the mitigation of N2O emissions from subtropical plantation soils.

Abstract:The combined climate-change-evoked drought and nitrogen (N) deposition have severely affected plant carbon and water relations governed by stomata. However, the interplay between steady-state and dynamic stomatal behavior responses to light remains unclear regarding its impact on plant water and carbon relations. The objective here was to investigate whether light-induced stomatal dynamics could mitigate the adverse effects of steady-state gas exchange on water conservation or photosynthesis under drought and N addition conditions. We conducted a manipulative experiment to investigate the impacts of throughfall reduction, N addition, and their combination on light-induced stomatal and photosynthetic dynamics in a Moso bamboo ( Phyllostachys edulis ) forest. We determined the influence of stomal response rate on water loss and photosynthesis, and further assessed whether it mitigated the effects of steady-state gas exchange (g s ). We found that Moso bamboo decreased g s under throughfall reduction, while accelerated stomatal opening and biochemical activation when irradiance increased, which reduced the lag in photosynthesis during the induction period. In contrast, under the combined throughfall reduction and N addition condition, Moso bamboo increased g s but showed faster stomatal closure, which decreased the percentage of transpiration following a decrease in light intensity. Our findings indicate that stomatal dynamic behavior may depend on the effects of steady-state gas exchange on water conservation and carbon uptake under different soil water and N conditions. These discoveries contribute to our understanding of the coupling mechanisms of plant water use and carbon uptake in the context of global changes.

Abstract:Agroforestry management has immense potential in enhancing forest carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change. Yet the impact and response mechanism of compound fertilization rates on carbon sinks in agroforestry systems remain ambiguous. This study aims to elucidate the impact of different compound fertilizer rates on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, vegetation and soil organic carbon (SOC) sinks, and to illustrate the differences in agroforestry systems' carbon sinks through a one-year positioning test across 12 plots, applying different compound fertilizer application rates (0 (CK), 400 (A1), 800 (A2), and 1600 (A3) kg ha-1). The study demonstrated that, after fertilization, the total GHG emissions of A1 decreased by 4.41%, whereas A2 and A3 increased their total GHG emissions by 17.13% and 72.23%, respectively. The vegetation carbon sequestration of A1, A2, and A3 increased by 18.04%, 26.75%, and 28.65%, respectively, and the soil organic carbon sequestration rose by 32.57%, 42.27% and 43.29%, respectively. To sum up, in contrast with CK, the ecosystem carbon sequestration climbed by 54.41%, 51.67%, and 0.90%, respectively. Our study suggests that rational fertilization can improve the carbon sink of the ecosystem and effectively ameliorate climate change.
Changes in Soil CO2 and N2O Emissions in Response to Urea and Biochar-Based Urea in a Subtropical Moso Bamboo Forest

Abstract:The application of biochar-based fertilizers is an effective strategy for enhancing plant growth and soil organic carbon stocks; however, the impacts of such practices on soil CO2 and N2O emissions and associated mechanisms in subtropical forests are poorly understood. A two-year field trial was conducted to determine effects of urea and biochar-based urea on variations in soil CO2 and N2O emissions, as well as various soil environmental factors in a subtropical Moso bamboo forest. Five treatments were established: a control (without fertilization), urea with low and high application rates (100 and 300 kg N ha -1, LU and HU), and biochar-based urea with low and high application rates (100 and 300 kg N ha -1, LBU and HBU). The soil CO2 emissions were increased by LU, HU, and HBU treatments during the first year compared to controls (P < 0.05). However, this stimulatory response was observed only under the HU treatment during the second year. The soil N2O emissions increased under the LU and HU treatments during the first year but were decreased under HBU (P < 0.05); during the second year, only HU had a stimulatory effect. Importantly, the soil CO2 emissions and their Q10 values under the biochar-based urea treatment were lower than those with urea (P < 0.05). The application of urea increased contents of NH4+-N, NO3--N, water soluble organic C/N (WSOC/WSON), as well as activities of invertase, beta-glucosidase, urease, and protease (P < 0.05). In comparison, application of biochar-based urea enhanced contents of WSOC, NH4+-N, and NO3--N but decreased WSON and activities of beta-glucosidase, urease, and protease (P < 0.05). Regardless of treatment, the CO2 emissions were correlated with WSOC concentration and invertase/beta-glucosi-dase activities; the N2O emissions were associated with (P < 0.05) NH4+-N, NO3--N, WSON and urease/protease activities. Structural equation models revealed application of urea/biochar-based urea influenced the soil CO2/ N2O emissions primarily through altering the pool size of labile C/N fractions and the activities of enzymes regarding C/N cycling. In conclusion, compared with urea, application of biochar-based urea provided more advantages for mitigating soil CO2/N2O emissions in subtropical forest ecosystems.

Abstract:Moso bamboo plantations (Phyllostachys pubescens) are one of the most important forest types in southern China, but there is little information on the effects of their establishment and silvicultural practices on soil CO2 efflux. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of land use change from a natural broadleaf evergreen forest to Moso bamboo plantations and their management practices on soil CO2 efflux in a subtropical region of China using static closed chamber method. Regardless of the land uses or management practices, the effluxes over a 12-month period had a seasonal pattern, with the maximum effluxes observed in summer and the minimum in winter. Whereas there was no significant difference in the total annual soil CO2 efflux between the natural broadleaf evergreen forest (BL) and the conventionally managed bamboo forests (CM), soil CO2 efflux in the intensively managed bamboo forest (IM) was significantly higher. Soil temperature was the most important environmental factor affecting soil CO2 efflux rates for all three land uses. Soil moisture also had a significant positive correlation with soil CO2 efflux rates. Soil temperature and moisture had greater influence on soil CO2 efflux rate in the IM than the CM and BL forests. Soil dissolved organic C had a positive correlation with soil CO2 efflux rate in the CM, but had no significant correlation with that in the IM or the BL forests. Our study for the first time demonstrated that conversion of the natural subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest to Moso bamboo does not increase soil CO2 efflux. However, when bamboo forests are under intensive management with regular tillage, fertiliser application and weeding, significantly more soil CO2 emission occurs. Therefore, best management practices should be developed to reduce soil CO2 efflux in Moso bamboo plantations in the subtropical regions of China. (C) 2011 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Because microbial communities play a key role in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling, changes in the soil microbial community may directly affect ecosystem functioning. However, the effects of N deposition and management practices on soil microbes are still poorly understood. We studied the effects of these two factors on soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and community composition in Moso bamboo plantations using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Plantations under conventional (CM) or intensive management (IM) were subjected to one of four N treatments for 30 months. IM and N addition, both separately and in combination, significantly increased soil MBC while decreasing bacterial diversity. However, increases in soil MBC were inhibited when N addition exceeded 60 kg N∙ha−1∙yr−1. IM increased the relative abundances of Actinobacteria and Crenarchaeota but decreased that of Acidobacteria. N addition increased the relative abundances of Acidobacteria, Crenarchaeota and Actinobacteria but decreased that of Proteobacteria. Soil bacterial diversity was significantly related to soil pH, C/N ratio and nitrogen and available phosphorus content. Management practices exerted a greater influence over regulation of the soil MBC and microbial diversity compared to that of N deposition in Moso bamboo plantations.
