Abstract:In opportunistic networks (OppNets), instead of assuming a complete path, messages are exchanged opportunistically when two nodes encounter. To support efficient and reliable end-to-end messaging in OppNets, a number of routing protocols based on network coding have been proposed. However, few efforts in the studies focus on opportunistic network coding (ONC). It is because the coding opportunities do not probably exist in OppNets due to nodal mobility, low density, lossy link, etc. In this paper, an ONC routing model for OppNets based on a new hybrid communication scheme was proposed. The communication scheme combines contact-based communication mode used by most routing protocols in OppNets and contact duration-based communication mode employed by few routing protocols in OppNets. We also designed an ONC routing protocol based on the ONC routing model in OppNets. Simulated results show that compared with Epidemic routing, the ONC routing can achieve higher delivery ratio and lower delay but consume fewer network cost.

Abstract:Routing is one of the most challenging problems in opportunistic networks (OppNets) because of the intermittence of the network connection. To address the issue, many routing schemes have been proposed, however, most of them assume that nodes are willing to forward messages for others. In fact, due to limited resources and poor social relations, nodes in OppNets may be selfish and not reluctant to participate in message forwarding. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we propose a Probabilistic Routing scheme based on Game Theory (PRGT) to stimulate cooperation among selfish nodes. Firstly, we introduce virtual money to buy the message for gaining more profits. Then, according to the historical meeting records among different nodes, we establish a Markov-based probability prediction model, in which the message carrier selects a node with higher probability of encountering the destination node as the relay node. Finally, a game theory approach is employed to simulate trading price for message forwarding. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed routing scheme can effectively improve the delivery rate of messages and reduce network latency.

Abstract:Network coding is an emerging and powerful solution that can significantly improve the throughput and power efficiency of wireless networks by allowing mixing of various traffic flows via algebraic operations. With network coding, however, a packet has to wait to be network-coded with others given the stochastic nature of the packet arrival process of the various flows. This may result in large delay and packet-loss rate. To overcome this limitation, a novel network coding approach, which we shall refer to as opportunistic network coding (ONQ, is presented in this paper. In this proposed approach, whether a packet is transmitted with or without network coding is determined by the buffer's queue state at a given node. We shall derive ONC's performance in terms of delay, packet-loss, and power consumption by formulating a Markov Chain and a Hidden Markov Model for the delay and power analysis. More importantly, we will develop an optimal ONC strategy with minimal average delay and zero packet-loss rate. In particular, we will show that there exists a fundamental tradeoff between average delay and power, which characterizes the performance limit of ONC.

Abstract:Wireless opportunistic networks are self-organizing networks which communication devices suffer from intermittent connectivity or disconnections. Users in such networks carry the messages while they are moving, and forward them when encounter with other ones. The existing two types of routings in opportunistic networks have their own shortcomings. The forwarding-based approach can reduce cost but cannot guarantee the latency and delivery probability. The flooding-based approach have higher efficiency but consume a large amount of resource. Therefore, how to make a trade off between the two schemes is a challenge issue. So in this paper, we propose a new routing named Knowledge-based Multiplayer Collaborative (KBMC) Routing. In KBMC, we take some useful knowledge into consideration, such as energy consumption, delivery probability, node velocity, message carrying time. Then using the Nash bargaining game theory to construct a proper utility function in order to decide which message can delivery to which node. That can avoid random and blindfold forwarding, save the network resources. We determine the number of copies of the message by computing activity function based on the knowledge to limit flooding. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that our proposed KBMC performs better compared to some classical protocols in terms of overhead, average latency, delivery probability and average hops.

Abstract:Although the wireless network is widely used in many fields, its characteristics such as high bit error rate and broadcast links may block its development. Network coding is an artistic way to exploit its intrinsic characteristics to increase the network reliability. Some people research network coding schemes for inter-flow or intra-flow, each type with its own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism, called MM-NCOPE, which integrates the idea of inter-flow and intra-flow coding. On the one hand, MM-NCOPE utilizes random liner coding to encode the NCOPE packets while NCOPE is a sub-protocol for optimizing the COPE algorithm by iteration. In NCOPE, packets are automatically matched by size to be coded. As a result, it improves the coding gain in some level. On the other hand, we adopt the partial Acknowledgement retransmission scheme to achieve high compactness and robustness. ACK is an independent packet with the highest priority rather than a part of the data packets. Compared with existing works on opportunistic network coding, our approach ensures the reliability of wireless links and improves the coding gain.

Abstract:Opportunistic mobile social network is a type of delayed tolerant network, where nodes with mobility contacts each other through short range wireless communications. Recently, many related applications are emerging, such as Firechat. However, message dissemination in opportunistic mobile social network is a challenging task. We propose collaborative network coding that enables users to take part in improving the performance of using network coding for message dissemination. The proposed method is evaluated by trace data conducted by participants who may not know each other in advance for a more realistic simulation of real world opportunistic mobile social network. Simulation result shows that our proposed method out performs flooding based message dissemination.

Abstract:Geographical source routing is a promising routing technique for VANETs, due to its adaptability for network dynamics and ability to handle topology holes. In traditional geographical source routing algorithms a best-known neighbor, typically the neighbor closest to the next junction in a greedy fashion, is designated as the next hop. This approach may cause two drawbacks: (1) the designated neighbor might not receive the packet correctly and (2) non-neighbor nodes are never given opportunities to do forwarding. Due to the broadcast nature of wireless media, non-neighbor nodes can overhear the transmission and may offer better forwarding progress than the designated neighbor. The above two factors both degrades the end-to-end delivery ratio. In this paper, we resolve the degradation of delivery ratio by introducing the concept of opportunistic routing to geographical source routing. A new routing protocol, named Geographical Opportunistic Source Routing (GOSR), is developed. GOSR allows non-neighbor nodes as well as the bestknown neighbor to become a forwarder. The notification cost of opportunistic routing is minimized by enforcing a scope from which candidate forwarders are selected. Defer timers are adopted to avoid conflicts caused by simultaneous transmissions by nodes in the designated scope. Extensive simulation studies are performed and the results show that GOSR can substantially reduce hop count and also improve end-to-end delivery ratio remarkably.

Abstract:Opportunistic networking is an important technique to enable users to communicate in an environment where contemporaneous end-to-end paths are unavailable or unstable. To support end-to-end messaging in opportunistic networks, a number of probabilistic routing protocols have been proposed. However, when nodes are selfish, they may not have incentives to participate in probabilistic routing, and the system performance will degrade significantly. In this paper, we present a novel incentive scheme for probabilistic routing that stimulates selfish nodes to participate. We not only rigorously prove the properties of our scheme, but also extensively evaluate our scheme using GloMoSim. Evaluation results show that there is an up to 75.8% gain in delivery ratio compared with a probabilistic routing protocol providing no incentive.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) applied to specific scenarios are kinds of opportunistic networks. Introducing currently opportunistic routing protocols and actual VANETs characteristics, the paper proposed an opportunistic routing protocol based on the comprehensive utilities of forwarding nodes. The protocol conducted a dimensionless method to deal with these factors including the distance between the forwarding and the destination, the direction arriving the destination, the forwarding velocity vector and traffic conditions. It adopted an eigenvector method to determine each factor weight, and used a weighted sums method to compose each effect factor. In routing process, the node would select the highest utility node to propagate packets. It would use a store-carry-forward strategy to transmit packets in spare networks. By means of the NCTUns on the basis of the electronic map of Lanzhou, simulating the working process of the new routing protocol and the testing results indicate that the protocol could apply better to various actual VANETs scenarios.

Abstract:ABSTRACTRouting in Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) with unpredictable node mobility is a challenging problem because disconnections are prevalent and lack of knowledge about network dynamics hinders good decision making. Current approaches are primarily based on redundant transmissions. They have either high overhead due to excessive transmissions or long delays due to the possibility of making wrong choices when forwarding a few redundant copies. In this paper, we propose a novel forwarding algorithm based on the idea of erasure codes. Erasure coding allows use of a large number of relays while maintaining a constant overhead, which results in fewer cases of long delays.We use simulation to compare the routing performance of using erasure codes in DTN with four other categories of forwarding algorithms proposed in the literature. Our simulations are based on a real-world mobility trace collected in a large outdoor wild-life environment. The results show that the erasure-coding based algorithm provides the best worst-case delay performance with a fixed amount of overhead. We also present a simple analytical model to capture the delay characteristics of erasure-coding based forwarding, which provides insights on the potential of our approach.

Abstract:With the recent technical advances and popularization of smartphones, which are able to store, display, and transmit various types of media content, message forwarding in opportunistic mobile social networks has become a hot topic. In this paper, we propose a social-aware single-copy routing approach, which leverages the internal social feature information to resolve the social distance between the source and destination step-by-step. We introduce an optimal social feature forwarding set selection scheme for routing guidance, which is proven to achieve small message forwarding delay. We convert the routing process into an iterative 2-hop routing scheme, with a novel transition probability to measure the delivery delay of each hop. The transition probability is according to the community structure in each social feature space. Extensive simulations on both real and synthetic traces are conducted in comparison with several existing state-of-art approaches.

Abstract:A new packet-forwarding architecture, COPE [1], was proposed recently to demonstrate that by properly exploiting the network coding and physical-layer broadcast properties, the throughput of multihop wireless networks may be significantly improved. However, the theoretical framework is not available yet for a rigorous throughput study of COPE. As the first step toward this direction, in this paper we conduct an analytical analysis on coding opportunities that COPE can create in a multihop wireless network. For a given node, we first derive the probability density function (pdf) of overhearing probability between its two neighbor nodes. Then, based on the pdf of overhearing probability we further analyze the probability of encoding multiple packets together at the node. This work not only provides a framework for the node-level performance analysis of COPE but also lays a foundation for the further network-level performance analysis of COPE.
Opportunistic Network-Coded Cooperation In Wireless Networks

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an opportunistic network-coded cooperation (ONCC) scheme suitable for multiple unicast transmission pairs in a single-cell wireless network. In contrast to existing work related to network-coded cooperation where the relay always performs network-coding-and-forwarding to help those transmitting terminals, ONCC is opportunistic because the relay decides whether or not to help do cooperation for a source-destination s-d pair based upon limited feedback from the destination. It will not assist a transmission pair unless the feedback indicates failure of the direct transmission between the source and the destination. For a wireless system composed of two s-d pairs and a relay, we present systematic performance analysis of ONCC in terms of diversity-multiplexing tradeoff and system outage probability. ONCC is proved to be able to achieve an optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff which corresponds to the transmit diversity bound in the high-SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) regime. This means that ONCC makes more efficient use of the degrees of freedom of the channel than those protocols where an s-d pair is always be assisted by cooperative communication. Moreover, it shows that under a fixed system energy constraint, ONCC provides a reduced system outage probability while maintaining an increased expected spectral efficiency at the same time compared with Incremental Relaying protocol, which is similar to ONCC in "opportunistic" property but different from ONCC in that it does not exploit network coding technology.

Abstract:Routing algorithms have been the focus of research on opportunistic networks to effectively deal with the connectivity problem of intermittent communication in opportunistic networks. Due to the frequent forwarding of messages by active nodes in the opportunistic networks leading to excessive energy consumption, opportunistic networks suffer from communication susceptibility to interruption and unstable network connectivity. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes an opportunistic network routing algorithm (ST-ProPhet) based on connection stability and energy recovery, which takes into account the node’s historical average connection duration, encounter probability, and the node’s energy consumption. Firstly, a node encounter probability prediction model fusing the average connection duration is developed. Secondly, the base station is introduced and the node wireless energy recovery strategy is designed. Finally, the ST-ProPhet algorithm proposes a message forwarding strategy based on node encounter types on the basis of the encounter probability prediction model and energy recovery model. Simulation experiments show that the ST-ProPhet algorithm has an overall reduction of 5066.27mAh over the ProPhet algorithm in terms of average message energy consumption.

Abstract:User-contributed wireless mesh networks are a disruptive technology that may fundamentally change the economics of edge network access and bring the benefits of a computer network infrastructure to local communities at low cost, anywhere in the world. To achieve high throughput despite highly unpredictable and lossy wireless channels, it is essential that such networks take advantage of transmission opportunities wherever they emerge. However, as opportunistic routing departs from the traditional but less effective deterministic, shortest-path based routing, user nodes in such networks may have less incentive to follow protocols and contribute. In this paper, we present the first routing protocols in which it is incentive-compatible for each user node to honestly participate in the routing despite opportunistic transmissions. We not only rigorously prove the properties of our protocols but also thoroughly evaluate a complete implementation of our protocols. Experiments show that there is a 5.8%-58.0% gain in throughput when compared with an opportunistic routing protocol that does not provide incentives and users can act selfishly.

Abstract:A Mobile Social Networks (MSN) is a kind of opportunistic network, which is composed of numerous mobile nodes with social characteristic. By now, the prevalent community-based routing algorithms mainly choose the optimal social characteristic node to forward messages, however they rarely consider the effects of community distribution on mobile nodes and time-varying characteristics of network. These algorithms usually lead to a high consumption of network resources and a low successful delivery ratio if they are used directly in mobile social networks. In order to solve this problem, we build a time-varying community-based network model, and propose a community-aware message opportunistic transmission algorithm (CMOT) in this paper. For inter-community messages transmission, the CMOT chooses an optimal community path by comparing the community transmission probability. In local communities, messages are forwarded according to the encounter probability between nodes. The simulation results show that, in comparison with classical routing algorithms, such as PRoPHET, MaxProp, Spray and Wait, and CMTS, the CMOT can improve the successful delivery ratio of messages and reduce network overhead obviously.

Abstract:Opportunistic routing [1, 2] was shown to improve the network throughput greatly. The core idea is to allow any node in the forwarder list, which overhears the transmission and is closer to the destination to participate in forwarding the packet. The nodes in forwarder list are prioritized and the lower priority forwarder will discard the packet if it has been forwarded by a higher priority forwarder. One open problem is how to select and prioritize forwarder list efficiently. In the paper, we investigate how to select and prioritize forwarder list to minimize energy consumptions. We study the case where the transmission power of each node is fixed (known as non-adjustable transmission model) as well as the case where each node is able to adjust its transmission power for each transmission (known as adjustable transmission model). Energy optimum algorithms to select and prioritize forwarder list in both cases are presented and analyzed. Worth to mention that, our methods do not assume any geometrical properties or energy models, they apply to practical and dynamic wireless networks. In addition, we conducted extensive simulations in TOSSIM to study the performance of the proposed routing protocol by comparing it with ExOR [1].

Abstract:The advancement of novel technologies has positioned mobile wireless networks as the central focus of computer technology research. The selection process for the subsequent relay node in message forwarding holds paramount importance and is deemed critical. Drawing inspiration from Social Mobility theory, this paper presents a pioneering node classification model that categorizes all nodes into three distinct types. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of Active Entropy, where the numerical value of Active Entropy serves as a metric for message forwarding. Consequently, the routing algorithm transforms into a limited set of strategies between nodes belonging to different types. This routing algorithm offers numerous advantages including enhanced delivery rate, reduced network overhead ratio and decreased transmission delay. We evaluate and compare the performance of our proposed algorithm with that of DFDL algorithm and Prophet algorithm on the ONE simulation platform. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieves a delivery rate at least 15% higher compared to the other two algorithms while also reducing overhead ratio.
