Abstract:In Web link structures, similar link distributions often occur, especially for pages from same hosts. For PageRank problems, similar in-link distributions of pages result in similar row patterns of the transition matrix. We demonstrate that common row patterns in the transition matrix determine identical sub-rows. Thus the identical sub-rows with a large proportion of nonzeros can be eliminated to decrease the density of PageRank problems. We propose an elimination strategy that exploits such identical sub-rows and generates an elimination operator for transferring the problem to an equivalent but more sparse problem. Numerical experiments are reported to illustrate the effectiveness of this strategy for decreasing the computational cost of solving PageRank problems.

Abstract:Research on link based object ranking attracts increasing attention these years, which also brings computer science research and business marketing brand-new concepts, opportunities as well as a great deal of challenges. With prosperity of web pages search engine and widely use of social networks, recent graph-theoretic ranking approaches have achieved remarkable successes although most of them are focus on homogeneous networks studying. Previous study on co-ranking methods tries to divide heterogeneous networks into multiple homogeneous sub-networks and ties between different sub-networks. This paper proposes an efficient topic biased ranking method for bringing order to co-effecting heterogeneous networks among authors, papers and accepted institutions (journals/conferences) within one single random surfer. This new method aims to update ranks for different types of objects (author, paper, journals/conferences) at each random walk.

Abstract:We introduce a partition of the web pages particularly suited to the PageRank problems in which the web link graph has a nested block structure. Based on the partition of the web pages, dangling nodes, common nodes, and general nodes, the hyperlink matrix can be reordered to be a more simple block structure. Then based on the parallel computation method, we propose an algorithm for the PageRank problems. In this algorithm, the dimension of the linear system becomes smaller, and the vector for general nodes in each block can be calculated separately in every iteration. Numerical experiments show that this approach speeds up the computation of PageRank.

Abstract:In recent years, information retrieval methods focusing on the link analysis have been developed; The PageRank and HITS are two typical ones According to the hierarchical organization of Web pages, we could partition the Web graph into blocks at different level. such as page level, directory level, host level and domain level. On the basis of block, we could analyze the different hyperlinks among pages. Several approaches proposed that the intra-hyperlink in a host maybe less useful in computing the PageRank. However. there are no reports on how concretely the intra- or inter-hyperlink affects the PageRank. Furthermore, based on different block level, inter-hyperlink and intra-hyperlink can be two relative concepts. Thus which level should be optimal to distinguish the intra- or inter-hyperlink? And how the ratio set between the intra-hyperlink and inter-hyperlink could ultimately improve performance of the PageRank algorithm? In this paper, we analyze the link distribution at the different block level and evaluate the importance of the intra- and interhyperlink to PageRank on the TREC Web Track data set. Experiment shows that, if we set the block at host level and the ratio of the weight between the intra-hyperlink and inter-hyperlink is 1:4. the retrieval could achieve the best performance.

Abstract:Traditional PageRank algorithm suffers from heavy computation cost due to the huge number of web pages. In this paper, we propose a more efficient algorithm to compute the pagerank value for each web page directly on the same out-link groups. This new algorithm groups the pages with the same out-link behavior (SOLB) as a unit. It is proved that the derived PageRank is the same as that from the original PageRank algorithm which calculates over single webpage; while our proposed algorithm improve the efficiency greatly. For simplicity, we restrict the group within a directory and define metrics to measure the similarity of the pages in same out-link behavior. We design the experiments to group from 0.5 liked to exact SOLB pages; the results show that such group offers similar rank scores as traditional PageRank algorithm does and achieves a remarkable 50% on efficiency.

Abstract:The PageRank model is a powerful tool for network analysis, utilized across various disciplines such as web information retrieval, bioinformatics, community detection, and graph neural network. Computing this model requires solving a large-dimensional linear system or eigenvector problem due to the ever-increasing scale of networks. Conventional preconditioners and iterative methods for general linear systems or eigenvector problems often exhibit unsatisfactory performance for such problems, particularly as the damping factor parameter approaches 1, necessitating the development of specialized methods that exploit the specific properties of the PageRank coefficient matrix. Additionally, in practical applications, the optimal settings of the hyperparameters are generally unknown in advance, and networks often evolve over time. Consequently, recomputation of the problem is necessary following minor modifications. In this scenario, highly efficient preconditioners that significantly accelerate the iterative solution at a low memory cost are desirable. In this paper, we present two techniques that leverage the sparsity structures and numerical properties of the PageRank system, as well as a preconditioner based on the computed matrix structure. Experiments demonstrate the positive performance of the proposed methods on realistic PageRank computations.

Abstract:Similarity calculation has many applications, such as information retrieval, and collaborative filtering, among many others. It has been shown that link-based similarity measure, such as SimRank, is very effective in characterizing the object similarities in networks, such as the Web, by exploiting the object-to-object relationship. Unfortunately, it is prohibitively expensive to compute the link-based similarity in a relatively large graph. In this paper, based on the observation that link-based similarity scores of real world graphs follow the power-law distribution, we propose a new approximate algorithm, namely Power-SimRank, with guaranteed error bound to efficiently compute link-based similarity measure. We also prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm. Extensive experiments conducted on real world datasets and synthetic datasets show that the proposed algorithm outperforms SimRank by four-five times in terms of efficiency while the error generated by the approximation is small.

Abstract:PageRank problem is the cornerstone of Google search engine and is usually stated as solving a huge linear system. Moreover, when the damping factor approaches 1, the spectrum properties of this system deteriorate rapidly and this system becomes difficult to solve. In this paper, we demonstrate that the coefficient matrix of this system can be transferred into a block form by partitioning its rows into special sets. In particular, the off-diagonal part of the block coefficient matrix can be compressed by a simple low-rank factorization, which can be beneficial for solving the PageRank problem. Hence, a matrix partition method is proposed to discover the special sets of rows for supporting the low-rank factorization. Then a preconditioner based on the low-rank factorization is proposed for solving difficult PageRank problems. Numerical experiments are presented to support the discussions and to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:We propose an adaptive reordered method to deal with the PageRank problem. It has been shown that one can reorder the hyperlink matrix of PageRank problem to calculate a reduced system and get the full PageRank vector through forward substitutions. This method can provide a speedup for calculating the PageRank vector. We observe that in the existing reordered method, the cost of the recursively reordering procedure could offset the computational reduction brought by minimizing the dimension of linear system. With this observation, we introduce an adaptive reordered method to accelerate the total calculation, in which we terminate the reordering procedure appropriately instead of reordering to the end. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness of this adaptive reordered method.

Abstract:Link analysis algorithms have been extensively used in Web information retrieval. However, current link analysis algorithms generally work on a flat link graph, ignoring the hierarchal structure of the Web graph. They often suffer from two problems: the sparsity of link graph and biased ranking of newly-emerging pages. In this paper, we propose a novel ranking algorithm called Hierarchical Rank as a solution to these two problems, which considers both the hierarchical structure and the link structure of the Web. In this algorithm, Web pages are first aggregated based on their hierarchical structure at directory, host or domain level and link analysis is performed on the aggregated graph. Then, the importance of each node on the aggregated graph is distributed to individual pages belong to the node based on the hierarchical structure. This algorithm allows the importance of linked Web pages to be distributed in the Web page space even when the space is sparse and contains new pages. Experimental results on the .GOV collection of TREC 2003 and 2004 show that hierarchical ranking algorithm consistently outperforms other well-known ranking algorithms, including the PageRank, BlockRank and LayerRank. In addition, experimental results show that link aggregation at the host level is much better than link aggregation at either the domain or directory levels.

Abstract:In many real-world domains, link graph is one of the most effective ways to model the relationships between objects. Measuring the similarity of objects in a link graph is studied by many researchers, but an effective and efficient method is still expected. Based on our observation of link graphs from real domains, we find the block structure naturally exists. We propose an algorithm called BlockSimRank , which partitions the link graph into blocks, and obtains similarity of each node-pair in the graph efficiently. Our method is based on random walk on two-layer model, with time complexity as low as O (n 4/3) and less memory need. Experiments show that the accuracy of BlockSimRank is acceptable when the time cost is the lowest.

Abstract:PageRank algorithm is a vital method to determine the importance of pages. Useful as it is, the algorithm has many disadvantages. Therefore, we arrive at the conclusion that it’s not rational to calculate the importance degree of pages simply by links between them. Considering the timeliness problem of PageRank algorithm, we provide the time penalty factor W(n) to weigh the effects of update time on page ranking. After adding the time penalty factor to the original PageRank algorithm, we come up with the refined PageRank algorithm. Our algorithm is superior compared with the original one and many other existing methods that weigh the effects of update time. We judge update time by the times a page is crawled by Web crawlers. Consequently, drawbacks of the methods that use the real time to measure update time can be overcome and the order of pages can meet users’ need better.

Abstract:Link analysis has been widely used to evaluate the importance of web pages. PageRank, the most famous link analysis algorithm, offers an effective way to rank the pages. However, the algorithm ignores three facts. First, nowadays the way that users retrieve information is quite different from the previous way when web search engine was not extensively used. Second, inter-site links and intra-site links should not be treated equally. A link from a different site is more important for a page than that within the same site. Third, most users start their browsing from a homepage, which should be given more weight than other pages. In this paper, we propose a novel ranking algorithm called XRank as a solution to these problems. Experimental results on the CWT100g show that our XRank algorithm outperforms other famous ranking algorithms, including PageRank and Two-Layer PageRank, especially on sites recommendation and web spam avoidance.

Abstract:PageRank is one of the most popular link analysis algorithms that have shown their effectiveness in web search. However, PageRank only consider hyperlink information. In this paper, we propose several novel ranking algorithms, which make use of both hyperlink and site structure information to measure the importance of each web page. Specifically, two kinds of methodologies are adopted to refine the PageRank algorithm: one combines hyperlink information and website structure information together by graph fusion to refine PageRank algorithm, while the other re-ranks the pages within the same site by quadratic optimization based on original PageRank values. Experiments show that both two methodologies effectively improve the retrieval performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and analyze GMRES-type methods for the PageRank computation. However, GMRES may converge very slowly or sometimes even diverge or break down when the damping factor is close to 1 and the dimension of the search subspace is low. We propose two strategies: preconditioning and vector extrapolation accelerating, to improve the convergence rate of the GMRES method. Theoretical analysis demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed strategies and numerical experiments show that the performance of the proposed methods is very much better than that of the traditional methods for PageRank problems.

Abstract:The web graph follows the power law distribution and has a hierarchy structure. But neither the PageRank algorithm nor any of its improvements leverage these attributes. In this paper, we propose a novel link analysis algorithm "the PowerRank algorithm", which makes use of the power law distribution attribute and the hierarchy structure of the web graph. The algorithm consists two parts. In the first part, special treatment is applied to the web pages with low "importance" score. In the second part, the global "importance" score for each web page is obtained by combining those scores together. Our experimental results show that: 1) The PowerRank algorithm computes 10%-30% faster than PageRank algorithm. 2) Top web pages in PowerRank algorithm remain similar to that of the PageRank algorithm.

Abstract:One of the essential problems in P2P is the strategy for resource discovery. Related methods in unstructured P2P either depend on the flooding and its variations or utilize various indices, which results in too much overhead to forward messages or too expensive cost to maintain the indices. An adaptive, bandwidth-efficient and easily maintained search algorithm for unstructured P2P systems, PeerRank, is presented. The scheme utilizes the feedback from previous searches to probabilistically guide future ones. In addition, an effective caching and indexing mechanism is introduced, which remarkably enforces the search performance. The final simulation experiment shows that the strategy can remarkably improve the search efficiency with the small average path length, high success rates, very low bandwidth consumption, and the eminent adaptability to the change of hot resources.
