Abstract:In this paper, we present a generative sketch model for human hair analysis and synthesis. We treat hair images as 2D piecewise smooth vector (flow) fields and, thus, our representation is view-based in contrast to the physically-based 3D hair models in graphics. The generative model has three levels. The bottom level is the high-frequency band of the hair image. The middle level is a piecewise smooth vector field for the hair orientation, gradient strength, and growth directions. The top level is an attribute sketch graph for representing the discontinuities in the vector field. A sketch graph typically has a number of sketch curves which are divided into 11 types of directed primitives. Each primitive is a small window (say 5 x 7 pixels) where the orientations and growth directions are defined in parametric forms, for example, hair boundaries, occluding lines between hair strands, dividing lines on top of the hair, etc. In addition to the three level representation, we model the shading effects, i.e., the low-frequency band of the hair image, by a linear superposition of some Gaussian image bases and we encode the hair color by a color map. The inference algorithm is divided into two stages: 1) We compute the undirected orientation field and sketch graph from an input image and 2) we compute the hair growth direction forthe sketch curves and the orientation field using a Swendsen-Wang cut algorithm. Both steps maximize a joint Bayesian posterior probability. The generative model provides a straightforward way for synthesizing realistic hair images and stylistic drawings (rendering) from a sketch graph and a few Gaussian bases. The latter can be either inferred from a real hair image or input (edited) manually using a simple sketching interface. We test our algorithm on a large data set of hair images with diverse hair styles. Analysis, synthesis, and rendering results are reported in the experiments.

Abstract:Human hair is a very complex visual pattern whose representation is rarely studied in the vision literature despite its important role in human recognition. In this paper, we propose a generative model for hair representation and hair sketching, which is far more compact than the physically based models in graphics. We decompose a color hair image into three bands: a color band (a) (by Luv transform), a low frequency band (b) for lighting variations, and a high frequency band (c) for the hair pattern. Then we propose a three level generative model for the hair image (c). In this model, image (c) is generated by a vector field (d) that represents hair orientation, gradient strength, and directions; and this vector field is in turn generated by a hair sketch layer (e). We identify five types of primitives for the hair sketch each specifying the orientations of the vector field on the two sides of the sketch. With the five-layer representation (a-e) computed, we can reconstruct vivid hair images and generate hair sketches. We test our algorithm on a large data set of hairs and some results are reported in the experiments.
Hair-GAN: Recovering 3D Hair Structure from a Single Image Using Generative Adversarial Networks

Abstract:We introduce Hair-GAN, an architecture of generative adversarial networks, to recover the 3D hair structure from a single image. The goal of our networks is to build a parametric transformation from 2D hair maps to 3D hair structure. The 3D hair structure is represented as a 3D volumetric field which encodes both the occupancy and the orientation information of the hair strands. Given a single hair image, we first align it with a bust model and extract a set of 2D maps encoding the hair orientation information in 2D, along with the bust depth map to feed into our Hair-GAN. With our generator network, we compute the 3D volumetric field as the structure guidance for the final hair synthesis. The modeling results not only resemble the hair in the input image but also possesses many vivid details in other views. The efficacy of our method is demonstrated by using a variety of hairstyles and comparing with the prior art.

Abstract:Recent deep generative models allow real-time generation of hair images from sketch inputs. Existing solutions often require a user-provided binary mask to specify a target hair shape. This not only costs users extra labor but also fails to capture complicated hair boundaries. Those solutions usually encode hair structures via orientation maps, which, however, are not very effective to encode complex structures. We observe that colored hair sketches already implicitly define target hair shapes as well as hair appearance and are more flexible to depict hair structures than orientation maps. Based on these observations, we present SketchHairSalon, a two-stage framework for generating realistic hair images directly from freehand sketches depicting desired hair structure and appearance. At the first stage, we train a network to predict a hair matte from an input hair sketch, with an optional set of non-hair strokes. At the second stage, another network is trained to synthesize the structure and appearance of hair images from the input sketch and the generated matte. To make the networks in the two stages aware of long-term dependency of strokes, we apply self-attention modules to them. To train these networks, we present a new dataset containing thousands of annotated hair sketch-image pairs and corresponding hair mattes. Two efficient methods for sketch completion are proposed to automatically complete repetitive braided parts and hair strokes, respectively, thus reducing the workload of users. Based on the trained networks and the two sketch completion strategies, we build an intuitive interface to allow even novice users to design visually pleasing hair images exhibiting various hair structures and appearance via freehand sketches. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations show the advantages of the proposed system over the existing or alternative solutions.

Abstract:In recent years, it becomes possible to extract hair information for hair reconstruction from multiple cameras or monocular camera. Using a single image as the input avoids the high cost setups and complex calibration compared to multiviewed reconstruction. Taking advantage of an extendible hairstyle database, this paper introduced Struct2Hair, a novel single-viewed hair modelling approach by extracting hair shape descriptor (HSD). The HSD is defined as the fundamental structure-aware feature, which is a combination of critical shapes in a hairstyle. A complete dataset of critical hair shapes is constructed from a known database of three-dimensional (3D) hair models. We first analyze the input two-dimensional (2D) image to extract the orientation information and 2D hair sketch automatically. The extracted information is then used to retrieve the corresponding critical shapes with optimization to build the robust HSD. Finally, the HSD constructs a weighted 3D hair orientation field to guide full-head hair model generation. Our method can preserve local geometric features of hair and retain the whole shape of the hairstyle globally owing to the HSD, which will benefit further hair editing and stylization.

Abstract:Human hair has significant effect on the life-likeness of human portrait and human recognition. In this paper, we present a classified method of human hair for hair sketching. We extract shape and appearance features from the training data of hair, including hair raw images and their corresponding sketching templates. Based on these features, we learn twenty-four hairstyles. Given a human hair raw image, we extract its shape and appearance features and find the best matched hair style and sketching template by Nearest Neighbor from twenty-four hairstyles. Taking the template as prototype, a new hair sketching corresponding to the raw image can be generalized by Thin Plate Spline. We test our algorithm to a large data set of hair images with diverse hair styles, experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:We introduce CT2Hair, a fully automatic framework for creating high-fidelity 3D hair models that are suitable for use in downstream graphics applications. Our approach utilizes real-world hair wigs as input, and is able to reconstruct hair strands for a wide range of hair styles. Our method leverages computed tomography (CT) to create density volumes of the hair regions, allowing us to see through the hair unlike image-based approaches which are limited to reconstructing the visible surface. To address the noise and limited resolution of the input density volumes, we employ a coarse-to-fine approach. This process first recovers guide strands with estimated 3D orientation fields, and then populates dense strands through a novel neural interpolation of the guide strands. The generated strands are then refined to conform to the input density volumes. We demonstrate the robustness of our approach by presenting results on a wide variety of hair styles and conducting thorough evaluations on both real-world and synthetic datasets. Image-Based Hair Pre-processing for Art Creation: A Case Study of Bas-Relief Modelling

Abstract:To better capture the shapes as well as the rich dynamics of hair, image based modelling techniques have been developed for reconstructing their 3D geometry and important visual features. Most hair images contain inevitable noises which impair reconstructed hair models. Therefore we propose to pre-process hair images and provide an orientation map of hair strands to enhance the follow-on modelling. To demonstrate the usage of pre-processing techniques, we apply our pre-processing results for bas-relief stylisation and modelling of hair from image inputs. We compare different techniques to estimate hair orientations, adopting four types of filter mechanisms. Our analysis of their performance sheds insight on designing a suitable pre-processing technique for hair reconstruction from images. Several examples of bas-relief creation validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:We present DeepSketchHair, a deep learning based tool for modeling of 3D hair from 2D sketches. Given a 3D bust model as reference, our sketching system takes as input a user-drawn sketch (consisting of hair contour and a few strokes indicating the hair growing direction within a hair region), and automatically generates a 3D hair model, matching the input sketch. The key enablers of our system are three carefully designed neural networks, namely, S2ONet, which converts an input sketch to a dense 2D hair orientation field; O2VNet, which maps the 2D orientation field to a 3D vector field; and V2VNet, which updates the 3D vector field with respect to the new sketches, enabling hair editing with additional sketches in new views. All the three networks are trained with synthetic data generated from a 3D hairstyle database. We demonstrate the effectiveness and expressiveness of our tool using a variety of hairstyles and also compare our method with prior art.

Abstract:Generating plausible hair image given limited guidance, such as sparse sketches or low-resolution image, has been made possible with the rise of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Traditional image-to-image translation networks can generate recognizable results, but finer textures are usually lost and blur artifacts commonly exist. In this paper, we propose a two-phase generative model for high-quality hair image synthesis. The two-phase pipeline first generates a coarse image by an existing image translation model, then applies a re-generating network with self-enhancing capability to the coarse image. The self-enhancing capability is achieved by a proposed structure extraction layer, which extracts the texture and orientation map from a hair image. Extensive experiments on two tasks, Sketch2Hair and Hair Super-Resolution, demonstrate that our approach is able to synthesize plausible hair image with finer details, and outperforms the state-of-the-art.

GroomGen: A High-Quality Generative Hair Model Using Hierarchical Latent Representations

Abstract:Despite recent successes in hair acquisition that fits a high-dimensional hair model to a specific input subject, generative hair models, which establish general embedding spaces for encoding, editing, and sampling diverse hairstyles, are way less explored. In this paper, we present GroomGen, the first generative model designed for hair geometry composed of highly-detailed dense strands. Our approach is motivated by two key ideas. First, we construct hair latent spaces covering both individual strands and hairstyles. The latent spaces are compact, expressive, and well-constrained for high-quality and diverse sampling. Second, we adopt a hierarchical hair representation that parameterizes a complete hair model to three levels: single strands, sparse guide hairs, and complete dense hairs. This representation is critical to the compactness of latent spaces, the robustness of training, and the efficiency of inference. Based on this hierarchical latent representation, our proposed pipeline consists of a strand-VAE and a hairstyle-VAE that encode an individual strand and a set of guide hairs to their respective latent spaces, and a hybrid densification step that populates sparse guide hairs to a dense hair model. GroomGen not only enables novel hairstyle sampling and plausible hairstyle interpolation, but also supports interactive editing of complex hairstyles, or can serve as strong data-driven prior for hairstyle reconstruction from images. We demonstrate the superiority of our approach with qualitative examples of diverse sampled hairstyles and quantitative evaluation of generation quality regarding every single component and the entire pipeline.

Abstract:We present an example-based approach to hair modeling because creating hairstyles either manually or through image-based acquisition is a costly and time-consuming process. We introduce a hierarchical hair synthesis framework that views a hairstyle both as a 3D vector field and a 2D arrangement of hair strands on the scalp. Since hair forms wisps, a hierarchical hair clustering algorithm has been developed for detecting wisps in example hairstyles. The coarsest level of the output hairstyle is synthesized using traditional 2D texture synthesis techniques. Synthesizing finer levels of the hierarchy is based on cluster oriented detail transfer. Finally, we compute a discrete tangent vector field from the synthesized hair at every level of the hierarchy to remove undesired inconsistencies among hair trajectories. Improved hair trajectories can be extracted from the vector field. Based on our automatic hair synthesis method, we have also developed simple user-controlled synthesis and editing techniques including feature-preserving combing as well as detail transfer between different hairstyles.

Abstract:This paper presents a single-view hair modeling technique for generating visually and physically plausible 3D hair models with modest user interaction. By solving an unambiguous 3D vector field explicitly from the image and adopting an iterative hair generation algorithm, we can create hair models that not only visually match the original input very well but also possess physical plausibility (e.g., having strand roots fixed on the scalp and preserving the length and continuity of real strands in the image as much as possible). The latter property enables us to manipulate hair in many new ways that were previously very difficult with a single image, such as dynamic simulation or interactive hair shape editing. We further extend the modeling approach to handle simple video input, and generate dynamic 3D hair models. This allows users to manipulate hair in a video or transfer styles from images to videos.

Abstract:We present the detailed modeling of the hairy brush used typically in Chinese calligraphy. The complex model, which includes also a model for the ink and the paper, covers the various stages of the brush going through a calligraphy process. The model relies on the concept of writing primitives, which are the smallest units of hair clusters, to reduce the load on the simulation. Each such primitive is constructed through the general sweeping operation in CAD and described by a NURBS surface. The writing primitives dynamically adjust themselves during the virtual writing process, leaving an imprint on the virtual paper as they move. The behavior of the brush is an aggregation of the behavior of all the writing primitives. A software system based on the model has been built and tested. Samples of imitation artwork from using the system were obtained and found to be nearly indistinguishable from the real artwork.

Abstract:We present an interactive approach to synthesizing realistic variations in facial hair in images, ranging from subtle edits to existing hair to the addition of complex and challenging hair in images of clean-shaven subjects. To circumvent the tedious and computationally expensive tasks of modeling, rendering and compositing the 3D geometry of the target hairstyle using the traditional graphics pipeline, we employ a neural network pipeline that synthesizes realistic and detailed images of facial hair directly in the target image in under one second. The synthesis is controlled by simple and sparse guide strokes from the user defining the general structural and color properties of the target hairstyle. We qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate our chosen method compared to several alternative approaches. We show compelling interactive editing results with a prototype user interface that allows novice users to progressively refine the generated image to match their desired hairstyle, and demonstrate that our approach also allows for flexible and high-fidelity scalp hair synthesis.

HAAR: Text-Conditioned Generative Model of 3D Strand-based Human Hairstyles

Abstract:We present HAAR, a new strand-based generative model for 3D human hairstyles. Specifically, based on textual inputs, HAAR produces 3D hairstyles that could be used as production-level assets in modern computer graphics engines. Current AI-based generative models take advantage of powerful 2D priors to reconstruct 3D content in the form of point clouds, meshes, or volumetric functions. However, by using the 2D priors, they are intrinsically limited to only recovering the visual parts. Highly occluded hair structures can not be reconstructed with those methods, and they only model the ''outer shell'', which is not ready to be used in physics-based rendering or simulation pipelines. In contrast, we propose a first text-guided generative method that uses 3D hair strands as an underlying representation. Leveraging 2D visual question-answering (VQA) systems, we automatically annotate synthetic hair models that are generated from a small set of artist-created hairstyles. This allows us to train a latent diffusion model that operates in a common hairstyle UV space. In qualitative and quantitative studies, we demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed model and compare it to existing hairstyle generation approaches.

Abstract:This paper presented a cartoon hair generation method that combining geometric kinematics. This method included geometric modeling and kinematics simulation. In modeling part: first user loaded a head model and set the control point of hair, this system generated geometric model of the hair automatically. In simulation part: this paper introduced mesh-based inverse kinematics to generate cartoon hair animation. Experimental results show that: with simple interaction, the system can produce satisfactory cartoon hair.
GaussianHair: Hair Modeling and Rendering with Light-aware Gaussians

Abstract:Hairstyle reflects culture and ethnicity at first glance. In the digital era, various realistic human hairstyles are also critical to high-fidelity digital human assets for beauty and inclusivity. Yet, realistic hair modeling and real-time rendering for animation is a formidable challenge due to its sheer number of strands, complicated structures of geometry, and sophisticated interaction with light. This paper presents GaussianHair, a novel explicit hair representation. It enables comprehensive modeling of hair geometry and appearance from images, fostering innovative illumination effects and dynamic animation capabilities. At the heart of GaussianHair is the novel concept of representing each hair strand as a sequence of connected cylindrical 3D Gaussian primitives. This approach not only retains the hair's geometric structure and appearance but also allows for efficient rasterization onto a 2D image plane, facilitating differentiable volumetric rendering. We further enhance this model with the "GaussianHair Scattering Model", adept at recreating the slender structure of hair strands and accurately capturing their local diffuse color in uniform lighting. Through extensive experiments, we substantiate that GaussianHair achieves breakthroughs in both geometric and appearance fidelity, transcending the limitations encountered in state-of-the-art methods for hair reconstruction. Beyond representation, GaussianHair extends to support editing, relighting, and dynamic rendering of hair, offering seamless integration with conventional CG pipeline workflows. Complementing these advancements, we have compiled an extensive dataset of real human hair, each with meticulously detailed strand geometry, to propel further research in this field.

Analysis and Synthesis of Textured Motion: Particle, Wave and Cartoon Sketch

Abstract:Natural scenes contain a wide range of textured motion patterns which are characterized by the move- ment of a large amount of particle and wave elements, such as falling snow, water waves, dancing grass, etc. In this paper, we present a generative method for modeling these motion phenomena and our method consists of four components: (1). A photometric model which represents an image as a linear superposition of image bases selected from a generic and over-complete dictionary. The dictionary contains Gabor and LoG bases for point/particle-elements and Fourier bases for wave-elements. These bases compete to explain the input images and transfer a raw image to a base (token) representation with O(102)-fold of dimension reduction. (2). A geometric model which groups adjacent bases and their motion trajectories into a number of basic moving elements { called \motons". A moton is a deformable template in space-time representing a moving element, such as a snow∞ake. (3). A dynamic model which characterizes the motion of particles, waves, and their interactions, e.g., balls/leaves ∞oating on water. The trajectories of these elements are coupled Markov chains. Given an input video sequence, a statistical learning algorithm computes a set of motons with their trajectories as hidden variables. It also learns the parameters that govern the geo- metric deformations and motion dynamics by maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). Consequently, novel sequences are synthesized easily from the learnt models. (4). A sketch model replaces the dictionary of Gabor/LoG and Fourier bases with symbolic sketches (token symbols). With the same generative model, the sketch model can render realistic and stylish cartoon animation. In this paper, cartoon sketch is viewed as a symbolic visualization and simpliflcation of the inner representation in visual perception. The success of the cartoon animation, in turn, suggests that the generative model captures the essence of visual perception of textured motion.
A Novel Method for Fast and High-Quality Rendering of Hair.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new rendering approach for hair. The model we use incorporates semantics-related information directly in the appearance modeling function which we call a Semantics-Aware Texture Function (SATF). This new appearance modeling function is well suited for constructing an off-line/on-line hybrid algorithm to achieve fast and high-quality rendering of hair. The off-line phase generates intermediate results in a database for sample geometries under different viewing and lighting conditions, which can be used to complete a large part of the overall computation and leaves only a few dynamic tasks to be performed on-line. We propose a model having four levels, from the whole hair volume to the very fine hair density level. We further employ an efficient disk-like structure to represent hair distributions inside a hair cluster. As the intermediate database carries opacity information, self-shadows can be easily generated. We present experiment results which clearly show that our methodology can indeed produce high quality rendering results efficiently.
