Abstract:As a new networking paradigm, opportunistic networking communications have great vision in animal migration tracking, mobile social networking, network communications in remote areas and intelligent transportation, and so on. Opportunistic networks are one of the evolutionary mobile ad hoc networks, whose communication links often suffer from frequent disruption and long communication delays. Therefore, many opportunistic forwarding protocols present major security issues, and the design of opportunistic networks faces serious challenges such as how to effectively protect data confidentiality and integrity and how to ensure routing security, privacy, cooperation, and trust management. In this paper, we first systematically describe the security threats and requirements in opportunistic networks; then propose a general security architecture of opportunistic networks; and then make an in-depth analysis on authentication and access control, secure routing, privacy protection, trust management, and incentive cooperation mechanisms; and at the same time, we present a comparison of various security and trust solutions for opportunistic networks. Abstract:Opportunistic network (OPPNET) is characterized by the intermittent connectivity among mobile nodes from their unpredictable mobility. Although it is promising, there still exist many security and privacy challenges. In this paper, we present an incentive and privacy-aware data dissemination (IPAD) scheme for OPPNETs, not only to exploit how to protect mobile node's identity privacy, location privacy and social profile privacy, but also to provide a secure incentive for privacy-aware data dissemination. Through extensive incentive analysis, we show that only if a source provides a secure incentive strategy, can a data packet be efficiently disseminated in OPPNETs.

Abstract:The opportunistic network adopts the disconnected store-and-forward architecture to provide communication support for the nodes without an infrastructure. As there is no stable communication link between the nodes, so that forwarding messages is via any encountered nodes. Social networks based on such opportunistic networks will have privacy challenges. In this paper, we propose a privacy protection scheme routing based on the utility value. We exploit the Bloom filter to obfuscate the friends lists and the corresponding utility values of nodes in order to make the routing decisions. This is easy to implement with high performance. Considering no infrastructure and stable link in opportunistic networks, this paper presents a self-organized key management system consisting of an identity authentication scheme based on the zero-knowledge proof of the elliptic curve and a key agreement scheme based on the threshold cryptography. The nodes prove their identities by themselves, and each node carries a certificate library to improve the authentication efficiency and success rate. In order to ensure the forward security and improve the session key agreement rate and the success rate, we exploit threshold cryptography to divide the session key, which could reduce the communication consumption of the traditional Diffie-Hellman (DH) algorithm. The experimental simulation results show that the proposed schemes are much better than the existing schemes for opportunistic networks.

Abstract:The Opportunistic Communication main goal is to use short-term, simple, easy, convenient, and quick actions to communicate when limited or no traditional Communications infrastructure is available. For users’ altruism represents the heart of any OppNets, using Communications Technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Max, or WiFi to communicate poses not only routing challenges but also users privacy challenges. However, most researches on OppNets domain, focus more on routing security than users mutual authentication and privacy. This work provides a review of the state of the art proposals on users privacy and mutual authentication techniques with three main contributions. First, it clarifies the concept of OppNets. Second, it Points out the differences between OppNets and some communications models that emerged from Mobile Ad hoc Networks research. Third, it succinctly reviews the main existing techniques proposed for users mutual authentication and privacy protection in OppNets, organising them in a taxonomy. Finally, it discusses, the limits of the techniques studied.

Abstract:Opportunistic Mobile Social Network (MSN) is a kind of Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) in which nodes are mobile with social characteristics. Users in such network carry data, move and forward it to others for information dissemination. To enable efficient data routing in opportunistic MSNs, the social metrics of users, such as mobility pattern, social centrality, community and etc. are leveraged in context of MSNs. In this paper, we investigate the data routing strategies in opportunistic MSNs in the following aspects: (1) the architecture of MSNs and its routing challenges and (2) routing strategies investigation on the basis of different social metrics. We study opportunistic MSN architecture and investigate the social metrics from encounter, social features and social properties, respectively. We show that encounter information is important exemplification of social metrics in opportunistic MSNs. We present other social metrics such as social features and social properties, including social graph properties and community structure. We then elaborate the routing strategies from different perspectives accordingly: encounter-based routing strategies, routing schemes according to social features and routing strategies based on social properties. We discuss the open issues for data routing in opportunistic MSNs, including limitations of routing metrics, collection of social information, social privacy and security, future applications of opportunistic MSNs, and etc.

Abstract:Routing plays an important role in opportunistic networks (OPPNETs). Many routing schemes in OPPNETs assume that data dissemination is not attacked by misbehavior nodes. However, in practice, OPPNETs may be susceptible to various kinds of attacks due to frequent disruption in communication links. In this paper, we propose a social trust model for secure routing in OPPNETs, which exploits the contact status, forwarding ability and common attributes to evaluate social trust. And then, we propose a novel trust based routing algorithm and buffer management algorithm for the secure routing strategy, considering network coding in data dissemination. This routing strategy not only ensures data dissemination via trusted nodes but also reduces delivery cost while traversing through trusted paths. Demonstrated by simulation results in ONE, the proposed secure routing can achieve better performance in terms of delivery ratio, delivery delay and delivery cost as compared to existing solutions.

Abstract:The traditional view of Internet of Things (IoT) attempts to connect all the physical objects to build a global, infrastructure-based IoT. In this paper, however, we will present opportunistic IoT, which is formed based on the ad hoc, opportunistic networking of devices (e.g., mobile phones and smart vehicles) using short-range radio techniques (e.g., Bluetooth and Wi-Fi). The opportunistic IoT demonstrates inherently the close relationship between human and opportunistic connection of smart things. It enables information forwarding and dissemination within and among the opportunistic communities formed based on the movement and opportunistic contact nature of human. We characterize the bi-directional effects between human and opportunistic IoT, discuss the technical challenges faced by this new research field, and propose a reference architecture for developing opportunistic IoT systems. Some of our ongoing practices, including opportunistic mobile social networking, opportunistic marketing, and community service provision are further presented to demonstrate the potential application areas and technical solutions of opportunistic IoT.

Abstract:Service Oriented Computing (SOC) has initially developed for the Internet, but also identified as an appealing computing paradigm for developing applications in distributed wireless environments. The open nature of wireless medium may expose services to a variety of unauthorized third parties (eavesdroppers), resulting in insecure service interactions, while cooperative jamming is promising to provide a strong form of security. This paper focuses on security performance study of wireless communications for service interactions among different parties in SOC. More specifically, this paper establishes a theoretical framework for the study of eavesdropper-tolerance capability (i.e., the maximum number of eavesdroppers that can be tolerated) in a two-hop wireless network, where the cooperative jamming is adopted to ensure security defined by secrecy outage probability (SOP) and opportunistic relaying is adopted to guarantee reliability defined by transmission outage probability (TOP). For the concerned network, exact modeling for SOP and fine approximation for TOP are first conducted based on the Central Limit Theorem. With the help of SOP and TOP models and also the Stochastic Ordering Theory, the model for eavesdropper-tolerance capability analysis is then developed. Finally, extensive simulation and numerical results are provided to illustrate the efficiency of our theoretical framework as well as the eavesdropper-tolerance capability of the concerned network from adopting cooperative jamming and opportunistic relaying.

Abstract:Opportunistic Networks, with users as a vital component, appears as a natural evolution of mobile Ad Hoc Networks field, and to some extent, an example of how the Internet of Things work. So, Opportunistic Networks due to their characteristics, need users- centric considerations when it comes to design Opportunistic Networks' routing, privacy, and authentications schemes. However, most mutual authentication schemes proposed for Opportunistic Networks do not consider, on the one hand, the gregarious aspect of users, and on the other hand, the parameter that pre-established contacts could be used in a mutual authentication process. Considering the factors pre-established contacts, Seed OppNet Identity, and traditional cryptography's principles, this paper proposes a realistic multiple levels authentication scheme for short-term and limited-time wireless network environment. The proposed scheme is realistic and achieves anonymity and privacy.

Abstract:The opportunistic routing paradigm is a new avenue for designing routing protocols in multi-hop wireless networks. Unlike traditional wireless routing protocols which use a single predetermining path, opportunistic routing explicitly takes advantage of the broadcast nature of wireless communications by using a set of relay nodes to opportunistically perform packet forwarding. Network security is also a hot research topic on routing. However, combining above two ideas to devise an effective routing is none. This paper aims at giving a new solution to solve it by defining a new metric called E2TX(trustworthiness and ETX). Using this metric, we also consider the two key issues for a new routing protocol called TOR: candidate selection and prioritization of relays in classical opportunistic routing. Through extensive simulations by NS2, we demonstrate that TOR outperforms class routing: ExOR, in terms of packet delivery ratio, delay and routing overhead.

Abstract:The Internet plays increasingly important roles in everyone's life, but the existence of a mismatch between the basic architectural idea beneath the Internet and the emerging requirements for it is also becoming more and more obvious. Although the Internet community came up with a consensus that the future network should be trustworthy, the concept of networks and the ways leading us to a trustworthy network are not yet clear. This research insists that the security, controllability, manageability, and survivability should be basic properties of a trustworthy network. The key ideas and techniques involved in these properties are studied, and recent developments and progresses are surveyed. At the same time, the technical trends and challenges are briefly discussed.

Abstract:To solve the problem of low message delivery rate and high network resource consumption when forwarding messages in opportunistic networks, an opportunistic routing algorithm based on trust relationships for wireless mesh networks is proposed. Firstly, the wireless mesh network is analyzed and the opportunistic routing model is constructed; By analyzing the security mechanism and security threat of communication entities, then measuring the trust degree of links and nodes, establishing the trust relationship between nodes, and defining and quantifying a new security measurement method based on the trust model; Finally, according to the security measurement method defined by the model, select the node with high trust value to participate in the message forwarding process. At the same time, give priority to the node with greater trust with the destination node as the relay node, and allocate the message copy according to the trust degree to make the message pass along the direction of increasing trust, to complete the design of opportunistic routing algorithm in wireless mesh networks. Experimental results show that the routing algorithm can effectively improve the message delivery rate, up to about 95%, and reduce the consumption of network resources.

Abstract:The exploitation of social context for routing in opportunistic networks is a relatively recent trend. In this paper, we survey the routing and forwarding protocols in opportunistic networks from social aspect. We classify the routing protocols into three categories: routing based on community, routing based on regular mobility pattern and routing based on combination of context and social information. We analyze and compare the typical routing protocols, furthermore point out the problems of duplication and congestion in the future work.

Abstract:In resent years, mobile ad hoc networks are a new emerging field with its potential applications in extremely unpredictable and dynamic environments. However, it is particularly vulnerable due to its features of open medium, dynamic changing topology, cooperative routing algorithms. The article surveys the state of the art in security for mobile ad hoc networks. Firstly, we analyze various possible threats to security in mobile ad hoc networks. Secondly, we illustrate representative solutions to deal with those threats, including key management, intrusion detection and cooperation enforcement. We also make a comparison and discussion of their respective merits and faults, and propose some ways to fix these problems. Finally, we also present the challenges which are still worth to further research in the area.

Abstract:Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANET) provide a relative new paradigm of wireless networking, which poses several formidable challenges for control, monitoring and management, due to the basically “infrastructureless” nature of these networks. Security is viewed in this paper as part of the control-operations-management functionality of MANET. An important and critical part of security is trust establishment and maintenance. We provide a description of distributed trust within the MANET framework that consists of two major components: (a) trust document distribution; and (b) distributed trust computation. Within (a) we summarize our earlier work on swarm-intelligence based trust document distribution schemes, including their major advantages as compared to other schemes as well as their performance. This paper is primarily addressing our new results within (b). Here we show that under a variety of schemes for distributed trust computation and establishment we have established strong connections with various components of the theory of random graphs. In this context we demonstrate how phase transitions (in this case they mean node transitions from non-trusted to trusted) can appear within a MANET. We link the existence and analysis of such phase transitions to dynamic cooperative games. We demonstrate that dynamic cooperative games provide a natural framework for analyzing several problems for MANET. We also demonstrate the fundamental influence of the topology of the MANET on these phase transitions. Finally we conclude with a preliminary description of results that describe the effects of mobility and topology change on these trust establishment schemes.

Abstract:Opportunistic networks (OppNets) are modern types of intermittently connected networks in which mobile users communicate with each other via their short-range devices to share data among interested observers. In this setting, humans are the main carriers of mobile devices. As such, this mobility can be exploited by retrieving inherent user habits, interests, and social features for the simulation and evaluation of various scenarios. Several research challenges concerning human mobility in OppNets have been explored in the literature recently. In this paper, we present a thorough survey of human mobility issues in three main groups (1) mobility characteristics, (2) mobility models and traces, and (3) mobility prediction techniques. Firstly, spatial, temporal, and connectivity properties of human motion are explored. Secondly, real mobility traces which have been captured using Bluetooth/Wi-Fi technologies or location-based social networks are summarized. Furthermore, simulation-based mobility models are categorized and state-of-the art articles in each category are highlighted. Thirdly, new human mobility prediction techniques which aim to forecast the three aspects of human mobility, i.e., users' next walks, stay duration and contact opportunities are studied comparatively. To conclude, some major open issues are outlined.

Abstract:Since users move around based on social relationships and interests, the resulting movement patterns can represent how nodes are socially connected (i.e., nodes with strong social ties, nodes that meet occasionally by sharing the same working environment). This means that social interactions reflect personal relationships (e.g., family, friends, co-workers, passers-by) that may be translated into statistical contact opportunities within and between social groups over time. Such contact opportunities may be exploited to ensure good data dissemination and retrieval, even in the presence of intermittent connectivity. Thus, in the last years, a new trend based on social similarity emerged where social relationships, interests, popularity and among others, are used to improve opportunistic routing. In this chapter, the reader will learn about the different approaches related to opportunistic routing focusing on the social-aware approaches and how such approaches make use of social information derived from opportunistic contacts to improve data forwarding. Additionally, a brief overview on the existing taxonomies for opportunistic routing as well as an updated one are provided along with a set of experiments in scenarios based on synthetic mobility models and human traces in order to show the potential of social-aware solutions.
