Abstract:Abstract Understanding the physical and dynamical origin of regional climate extremes remains a major challenge in our effort to anticipate the occurrences and mitigate the adverse impacts of these extremes. China was hit by a record-breaking hot winter in 2016/17 with remarkable surface warming over the northern and southeastern regions. Here we made a quantitative attribution of this 2016/17 winter’s surface temperature anomalies utilizing an updated version of the coupled atmosphere-surface climate feedback response analysis method (CFRAM), that recently incorporates the effect of aerosols and more species of trace gases (CFRAM-A). The CFRAM-A analysis reveals that the overall warming pattern may be largely attributed to the effects of anomalous water vapor, atmospheric dynamics, and aerosols, followed by anomalies of surface albedo, clouds, solar irradiance, ozone, and carbon dioxide. The effect of methane turns out to be negligible. Anomalies in surface dynamics provides an overall cooling effect, compensating the warming associated with other processes to some extent. Among the three major positive contributors, effects of water vapor and atmospheric dynamics prevail over both northern and southeastern China while the impact of anthropogenic aerosols appears much more pronounced over southeastern China, likely due to the implementation of highly effective emission reduction policies in China since 2013. The CFRAM-A thus provides an efficient, model-free approach for quantitatively understanding sources of regional temperature extremes and for assessing the impacts of environmental policies regulating anthropogenic emissions of aerosols and atmospheric trace gases.

The Interdecadal Change of the Leading Mode of the Winter Precipitation over China

Abstract:The interdecadal change of the leading mode of the mean winter precipitation over China has been investigated using observational data for the period from 1960 to 2012. The leading empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode (EOF1) of the winter precipitation over China displays a mono-sign pattern over southeastern China, accounting for 49.7 % of the total variance in the precipitation. Both the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) can impact EOF1. A positive (negative) EOF1 is accompanied by warm (cold) ENSO events and weak (strong) EAWM, and the latters can cause anomalous southerlies (northerlies) along the coast of southeastern China, accompanied by the transportation of water vapor from the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea favoring a wet (dry) winter over southeastern China. An abrupt transition of the EOF1 is observed around the mid-1980s. Therefore, the data are divided into two subperiods, i.e., 1960–1987 (P1) and 1988–2009 (P2). Significant differences in the large scale atmospheric circulation and sea surface temperature anomalies associated with EOF1 during these two subperiods are observed. EOF1 is closely related to the mid- to high-latitude atmospheric circulation in P1, while its relationship to the tropics obviously increases during P2. The partial regression analysis results show that the interdecadal change of EOF1 is caused by both the interdecadal changes of the EAWM and ENSO around the mid-1980s. In P1, the lower-level anomalous southerlies along the coastal southeastern China accompanied by water vapor transportation that causes above-average precipitation are related to an anti-cyclonic system centered over the mid-latitude western North Pacific associated with EAWM. In P2, the influence of the EAWM is weaker, and the southerly anomaly over the coastal southeastern China is mainly caused by the anticyclone over Philippines, which is related to the ENSO.

Abstract:The daily maximum and minimum temperatures observed at the 1897 meteorological stations of China over the past 60 years (1951-2010) are analyzed in this study to examine the interdecadal variation of frequency for record-breaking event (RBE) of temperature in the context of global warming. The results indicate that the frequency of record-breaking high temperature in the first decade of the 21st century is the highest in the three decades from the 1980s to the 2000s, implying a distinct warming trend. Meanwhile, frequencies of record-breaking low temperature in the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century are also significant. In particular, the RBEs of low temperature occurred over most of China in the 1990s but concentrated in northern China during the 2000s. To understand why the record low temperatures in northern China are repeatedly broken in the 2000s, the related East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM) variability is investigated. The empirical orthogonal function analysis of surface air temperature reveals that the northern mode of the EAWM variability, which is highly associated with the Arctic Oscillation (AO) activities at both interdecadal and interannual timescales, has been intensifying since late 1990s. Corresponding to the intensification of the northern mode of the EAWM variability and the negative phase of AO in the 2000s, the Siberian High and East Asian trough intensify while the polar-front jet stream strengthens and the subtropical westerly jet stream abnormally shifts northward. As a result, anomalously strong cold air masses, originated from Siberia, intrude into East Asia but are blocked by the enhanced northward subtropical westerly jet and cannot reach low-latitude area. Therefore, the extremely strong cold air masses are amassed in mid-high latitudes of East Asia, resulting in RBEs of low temperature in this area.

Was the Extremely Wet Winter of 2018/2019 in the Lower Reach of the Yangtze River Driven by El Niño–Southern Oscillation?

Abstract:In the winter of 2018/2019, the lower reach of the Yangtze River (LRYR) of China experienced an excessive amount of precipitation with a long duration. Such an extreme event occurred in the mature phase of an El Nino under the background of global warming, and thus, attracted great attention in the society and climate community. Presumably, this extreme event was driven by the El Nino. In this work, based on observational diagnoses and real-time model forecasts, we investigate the contributions of oceanic forcing and the predictability of this event. It is argued that tropical Atlantic warming, interdecadal variation, and central tropical Pacific warming (associated with Central Pacific [CP] instead of Eastern Pacific El Nino) are three major factors leading to the extreme event. In addition to the recognized impact from sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) associated with CP El Nino, tropical Atlantic warming makes an important contribution to the Atlantic-Eurasian circulation change through a global zonal wave pattern extending from the tropical Atlantic to East Asia. Moreover, a climate model successfully predicted the wet pattern in LRYR in short (1-5 month) lead real-time predictions, and captured the observed statistical relationship between the winter precipitation in LRYR and the SSTA in the central tropical Pacific and equatorial Atlantic Oceans. These results indicate that such an event is predictable to some extent.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of global warming, Northern East Asia experienced a record‐breaking extreme cold event during December 13 to 19 in 2023. The mechanisms behind this extreme cold event remain unclear. This study uses the circulation projection method to detect and quantify the contributions of various factors to this extreme cold event. The findings indicate that large‐scale atmospheric circulation anomalies are the predominant factors triggering this cold wave. The Polar‐Eurasian (POL)‐like teleconnection pattern is identified as a key driver for the cold anomalies, contributing approximately 85% of total cold anomalies in Northern East Asia in this event. Although the POL‐like teleconnection is largely internally generated, the preceding low sea ice levels in the Barents and Kara Seas can strengthen and maintain POL teleconnection. Additionally, preceding November increased snow cover in Northern East Asia can further amplify this cold event by enhancing local surface albedo and reducing incoming solar shortwave radiation.

Winter temperature extremes in China and their possible causes

Abstract:Cold and warm temperature extremes predominantly occurring in winter gained much more attention than mean temperatures. On the basis of daily maximum and minimum surface air temperature records at 303 meteorological stations in China, the spatial and temporal distributions of five indices for winter (DJF: December, subsequent January and February) temperature extremes are analysed during 19612003. For the majority of stations, the frequency of cold days/nights decreases by 1.33/ 2.98 and warm days/nights increases by 0.92/2.35 d/decade, respectively. Cold days/nights are significantly negatively correlated with the Arctic Oscillation (AO) index, while warm days/nights are positively correlated with the AO. The diurnal temperature range (DTR) has a declining trend with rate of 0.25 degrees C/decade and positive correlation with the AO index. Compared with other regions in China, stations in the northern China have larger trend magnitudes and stronger correlations with the AO index, and the AO can explain more than 50% of winter temperature extreme change in China. Compared with the annual basis, the winter temperature extremes have larger trend magnitudes, which reflect the rapid warming. During strongly positive AO index years, enhanced contrast tropospheric temperature (defined as the average of air temperature vertically integrated between 200 hPa and 1000 hPa based on the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis) between the north of China and the southern China weakens the East Asian winter monsoon which in turn reduces cold outbreaks in the northern and eastern China. The composites of large-scale atmospheric circulation are consistent with the asymmetrical changes of the geopotential height, zonal and meridional winds at high and mid latitudes at troposphere. Meanwhile, the linkage between the AO and solar activity also modulates the winter temperature extremes, while the mechanism needs to be investigated. Copyright (c) 2012 Royal Meteorological Society
Cause of an Extreme Warm and Rainy Winter Inshanghaiin 2019

Abstract:An extreme warm winter (ranked first during the past 30-years) occurred in Shanghai in 2019, accompanied with an extreme rainy winter (ranked thirdly in the same period). An observational diagnosis shows that the extreme warm and rainy winter arose from southerly anomalies associated with an anti-cyclone east of Shanghai. The cause of the anticyclone was attributed to V-shaped upper-tropospheric Rossby wave activity fluxes, originated from the North Atlantic and tropical Indian Ocean. Numerical model experiments indicate that the anomalous heat source in the tropical Indian Ocean played a dominant role (similar to 65%) in causing the local anomalous circulation, while the heating in North Atlantic also played a role (similar to 35%). A further analysis of the past 30 year data revealed that an extreme warm winter in the past did not coincide with an extreme wet winter. While the warm winter composite shows a large-scale anticyclone anomaly over Central and East Asia, the rainy winter composite exhibits a circulation dipole pattern with an anomalous cyclone (anticyclone) west (east) of Shanghai. Numerical experiments confirm that the former was forced by the combined effect of precipitation anomalies over the North Atlantic and tropical Indian Ocean (IO) and Maritime Continent (MC) through Rossby wave energy dispersion, whereas the latter was caused by a dipole heating pattern over the tropical IO/MC sector.
Water Vapor Isotopes Indicating Rapid Shift among Multiple Moisture Sources for the 2018–2019 Winter Extreme Precipitation Events in Southeastern China

Abstract:In the East Asian monsoon region, winter extreme precipitation events occasionally occur and bring great social and economic losses. From December 2018 to February 2019, southeastern China experienced a record-breaking number of extreme precipitation events. In this study, we analyzed the variation in water vapor isotopes and their controlling factors during the extreme precipitation events in Nanjing, southeastern China. The results show that the variations in water vapor isotopes are closely linked to the change in moisture sources. Using a water vapor d-excess-weighted trajectory model, we identified the following five most important moisture source regions: South China, the East China Sea, the South China Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and continental regions (northwestern China and Mongolia). Moreover, the variations in water vapor d excess during a precipitation event reflect rapid shifts in the moisture source regions. These results indicate that rapid shifts among multiple moisture sources are important conditions for sustaining wintertime extreme precipitation events over extended periods.

Abstract:A widespread and prolonged hot extreme hit the Yangtze River basin in summer 2022, with 300 sites established new temperature records and nearly 96% stations endured more than 40 hot days. From the perspective of the combination effect of the global warming and La Niña condition, potential mechanisms of the hot extreme were investigated. Such a record-breaking hot extreme was caused by an extremely strong and westward-shifted western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH). The global warming effect contributed primarily to the abnormal hot days in the Yangtze River basin, coupled with the modulation of the La Niña condition. The sea surface temperature anomaly pattern under La Niña condition favored more convection activities over the western Pacific, encouraging an enhanced and westward-extended WPSH. In addition, an observation-based attribution analysis indicates that anthropogenic warming may increase the probability of such extensively persistent hot extreme by 1.8 times.

Abstract:Fine particle matter (PM2.5) pollution frequently occurs in winter with increased consumption for heating and decreased radiation and boundary-layer height. Under strict emission controls since 2013, the mass concentrations of PM2.5 in Beijing decreased substantially in Winter 2017/2018. However, in March 2018, the mean PM2.5 concentration doubled from ~40 to 87 μg m−3, the reason for which is still unclear in the context of significant emission reductions. Here, using PM2.5 measurements, vertical observations, and reanalysis data, we found that this worsening was attributed to increasingly stable stratification characterized by temperature differences between 850 hPa and 1000 hPa, which reached the maximum value (−4 °C) for March from 1951 to 2018. Not limited to Beijing, positive anomalies in temperature differences occurred widely as a result of a westward transition in the center of the polar vortex. Away from the cold center and dominated by anomalous zonal westerlies, northern China was intruded by warm southerly winds. The warm regional advection increased positive anomalies in low-level temperature differences, and in turn, enhanced geopotential thickness throughout the troposphere. The adverse impact on pollution was also confirmed in comparison to the vortex pattern in January. The vortex changed from the elongated one with a split-flow pattern in January to the annular vortex with a major center over Novaya Zemlya in March. Correspondingly, Beijing was less affected by cold air masses and thereby under relatively stable stratification, which is unfavorable for pollution dispersion in March. Additionally, this aerosol pollution was further worsened by aerosol-induced deteriorating meteorological conditions.

Unprecedented July rainfall in North China in 2021: Combined effect of Atlantic warming and Arctic sea‐ice loss

Abstract:Record‐breaking July‐mean precipitation hit North China in 2021, resulting in huge economic losses and human casualties. The prevailing easterlies over the southern flank of a remarkable anomalous anticyclone centered over the Kuril Islands transported sufficient water vapor into North China, resulting in persistent downpours on the windward side of the North China Plain. The anomalous anticyclone was a portion of the Eurasian Rossby wave trains. The record‐high Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies induced the Rossby wave trains, which ended with an anomalous anticyclone over the Kuril Islands; meanwhile, the record‐low sea‐ice concentration over the Laptev–East Siberian Seas reinforced the anomalous anticyclone. Therefore, the combined effect of Atlantic and Arctic thermal forcings caused the record‐breaking July‐mean rainfall in North China in 2021. Using these two boundary layer forcings as independent predictors to run a multiple regression model produced encouraging hindcasting skills.

A Combined Arctic-tropical Climate Pattern Controlling the Inter-Annual Climate Variability of Wintertime PM2.5 over the North China Plain.

Abstract:In recent years, the Chinese government has made tremendous efforts to reduce the emissions of atmospheric pollutants throughout the country. An apparent improvement in air quality was observed in Beijing and its adjacent region during the winter of 2017/2018. However, caution should be taken in directly attributing this improvement to air control actions without taking the effects of climate variability into account. Here, we develop a statistical prediction model that can successfully predict the variability of wintertime PM2.5 concentrations observed over these regions. Our analysis indicates that the remarkable decrease in PM2.5 concentrations over the North China Plain (NCP) observed during the winter of 2017/2018 can be largely explained by changes in meteorological conditions. To clarify which climate factors control the inter-annual variability of wintertime PM2.5 pollution over the NCP, we further reconstructed a 30-year time series of wintertime PM2.5 levels over the NCP over the period of 1988–2017 using our statistical model. Through our analysis, we found that the combined Arctic-tropical climate effects related to the ENSO and Arctic warming controlled the inter-annual variability of wintertime PM2.5 over the NCP. Specifically, the rapid warming of the Barents-Kara Sea region enhances the Siberian High and thus plays an important role in improving the air quality over the NCP during the 2017/2018 wintertime. These results help us understand the role of climate variability in modulating air quality, especially its contributions to the winter of 2017/2018. These results may assist in the evaluation of current air control actions and the revision of relevant policy for the future, which are urgently needed for China.
Understanding extremely pluvial winters over Yangtze–Huia river basin in China: their complexity and tropical oceans influences

Abstract:In 2018/19 winter, the Yangtze–Huai River Basin (YHRB, one of the most developed areas in China) experienced an extremely pluvial condition with excessive and long-duration precipitation. Other three extremely pluvial winters during 1979/80–2018/19: 1997/98, 2002/03 and 1989/90 winters were also found. In 2018/19, 2002/03 and 1997/98 winters, similar low-level circulation pattern of anomalous southwesterlies (southeasterlies) over the southern (northern) YHRB was found. However, we found different tropical ocean states for the events. In 2018/19 winter, a combination of a moderate El Niño in the tropical Pacific and warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical western Indian Ocean (IO) and Atlantic was seen. In 1997/98 winter, we found an extreme eastern Pacific El Niño with warm SST anomalies in the western tropical IO. In 2002/03 winter, a central Pacific El Niño occurred. In contrast, no significant warm SST anomalies were seen in 1989/90 winter. Based on coupled model numerical experiments, the tropical SST anomalies contributed almost half of the YHRB precipitation anomalies in 2018/19 and 1997/98 winters. In particular, the tropical IO warm SST anomalies induced anomalous anticyclones over the South China Sea and northeastern China, with moisture convergence over the YHRB. In 2002/03, the tropical Pacific SST anomalies contributed almost half of the YHRB precipitation anomalies, although its contribution could be reduced due to the inter-basin interactions. For 1989/90 winter, we discussed possible impacts of mid-high latitude wave trains. Regionality of Record-Breaking Low Temperature Events in China and Its Associated Circulation

Abstract:Extreme cold events frequently occur around the world in recent several years and arouse widespread concern. In this study, 17 record-breaking event processes (RBEPs) of low temperature during 1981–2012 are identified by using daily minimum temperature at 1897 meteorological stations in China. These RBEPs are classified into two types based on the occurring area at northern or southern China to compositely examine the associated circulations. Although the correspondence between Arctic oscillation (AO) and RBEPs is not linearly stable, there still exist relationship between them, i.e. under AO negative phase the RBEPs tend to occur at northern China, nor the southern part, where the RBEPs prefer to happen under AO positive phase. In the RBEPs occurring at southern China, the continent high pressure over Mongolia area is extremely intensified and the East Asian polar front jet stream is enhanced accompanied with strong synoptic-scale eddy kinetic energy transports. Correspondingly, the cold air masses break out and unobstructed southward intrude to low latitudes, causing severe cooling effect in southern China. In the RBEPs occurring at northern China, however, the extremely intensified high pressure over northern Siberian area, combining with the northward enhanced subtropical jet stream, lead to the cold air mass accumulation and blockage at mid-latitudes and therefore RBEPs of low temperature at this area. Further study implies that interdecadal change of the AO phase and differences of synoptic-scale eddy activity might synthetically attribute to the different regional preference of those RBEPs of low temperature that are mostly located at southern China in 1990s but concentrated in northern China in 2000s.
Cross-Seasonal Precursors of Strong Persistent Freezing Rain and Snow Events in South and Southwest China

Abstract:Abstract We used daily temperature and precipitation data from 753 stations provided by the National Meteorological Information Center of China for the time period 1950–2018 and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data to explore winter weather events in southwest China (100–110° E, 22.5–32.5° N). We found a cross-seasonal precursor signal for the occurrence of freezing rain and snow events. Key zones of the tropical Pacific (160° E–90° W, 5° S–5° N) sea surface temperature (SST), the north Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO)-like SST mode and the Indian Ocean (40–100° E, 10° S–20° N) SST in the previous autumn were significantly correlated with the key anomaly combination index in winter. Forcing of the atmosphere by these three key areas in terms of SST led to significant atmospheric circulation anomalies in the north Pacific and its lower reaches. The coupling effect of the cold SST at (160° E–90° W, 5° S–5° N) and the north Pacific PDO-like cold SST mode in the previous autumn caused an abnormal longwave disturbance over the north Atlantic Ocean in winter, which was dispersed downstream. This caused mid- to high-latitude circulation anomalies in East Asia that favored the diffusion of cold air. The cold SST at (40–100° E, 10° S–20° N) deepened the southern branch trough, favoring the occurrence of freezing rain and snow events. The CESM air–sea coupling model simulated the forcing effect outside the three key areas of SST in November, consistent with the observed statistical results. An inter-seasonal prediction index for strong persistent freezing rain and snow events in southwestern China was established based on the average SST anomalies in key areas in the previous November. This index provides a reference for the inter-seasonal prediction of winter freezing events in southern China.

Abstract:In this paper, the observed characteristics and some possible attributions of extreme temperature in urban areas during the past 100 years will be estimated represented by Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei region, using the new series of daily maximum and minimum temperature observations in Beijing, Tianjin and Baoding city. Thus, the application value of the limited and precious climate observations on long timescale in meteorological service guarantee and scientific innovation will be enhanced furtherly, and the scientific reference and new understanding also will be provided for strengthening the supporting ability of existing researches of extreme climate events in urban areas under the background of global warming on the social, ecological and economic sustainable development in China. The observation facts of trend and variability are estimated for a century‐long timescale, as well as some possible attributions affecting temperature extremes over Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei region. In this paper, the new constructed daily maximum and minimum temperature series during the last 100 years in situ stations of Beijing, Tianjin and Baoding city are used, and two 30‐year baseline climatology of 1961–1990 and 1980–2010 are both used in calculating extreme temperature events. The results indicate that there are long‐lasting, frequent and serious extreme warming over Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei region, especially for extreme low temperature, with larger declining trends (at 5% significance) from 1981 to 2010 baseline than those from 1961 to 1990 baseline. And from a statistical perspective, El Niño decay years and surface sea temperature (SST) anomalies at some typical ocean regions of the Arabian Sea and the Bengal Bay on the northern Indian Ocean, the Western Pacific and the Mid Atlantic, Southern Indian Ocean and around 45°–85°E, 68°–82°N on the southwest Arctic Ocean can be used as the warning signals denoting extreme warming over Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei region. Additionally, urbanization has a significant (at 5% significance) effect on extreme warming over Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei region since 1979, with 24.3% warming contribution for annual minimum temperature.
