Abstract:In this paper, a compact algorithm for the fourth-order fractional sub-diffusion equations with first Dirichlet boundary conditions, which depict wave propagation in intense laser beams, is investigated. Combining the average operator for the spatial fourth-order derivative, the L1 formula is applied to approximate the temporal Caputo fractional derivative. A novel technique is introduced to deal with the first Dirichlet boundary conditions. Using mathematical induction method, we prove that the presented difference scheme is unconditionally stable and convergent by the energy method. The convergence order is $O(\tau ^{2-\alpha }+h^4)$ in $L_2$-norm. The outline for the two-dimensional problem is also considered. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to confirm the theoretical results.

Abstract:fourth-order compact algorithm is discussed for solving the time fractional diffusion-wave equation with Neumann boundary conditions. The L1 discretization is applied for the time-fractional derivative and the compact difference approach for the spatial discretization. The unconditional stability and the global convergence of the compact difference scheme are proved rigorously, where a new inner product is introduced for the theoretical analysis. The convergence order is 𝒪 (τ ^3-α+h^4) in the maximum norm, where τ is the temporal grid size and h is the spatial grid size, respectively. In addition, a Crank–Nicolson scheme is presented and the corresponding error estimates are also established. Meanwhile, a compact ADI difference scheme for solving two-dimensional case is derived and the global convergence order of 𝒪 (τ ^3-α+h_1^4+h_2^4) is given. Then extension to the case with Robin boundary conditions is also discussed. Finally, several numerical experiments are included to support the theoretical results, and some comparisons with the Crank–Nicolson scheme are presented to show the effectiveness of the compact scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, performing the average operators on the space variables, a numerical scheme with third-order temporal convergence for the two-dimensional fractional sub-diffusion equation is considered, for which the unconditional stability and convergence in L1(L∞)-norm are strictly analyzed for α ∈ (0, 0.9569347] by using the discrete energy method. Therewith, adding small perturbation terms, we construct a compact alternating direction implicit difference scheme for the two-dimensional case. Finally, some numerical results have been given to show the computational efficiency and numerical accuracy of both schemes for all α ∈ (0, 1).

Abstract:A fourth-order compact scheme is proposed for a fourth-order subdiffusion equation with the first Dirichlet boundary conditions. The fourth-order problem is firstly reduced into a couple of spatially second-order system and we use an averaged operator to construct a fourth-order spatial approximation. This averaged operator is compact since it involves only two grid points for the derivative boundary conditions. The L1 formula on irregular mesh is considered for the Caputo fractional derivative, so we can resolve the initial singularity of solution by putting more grid points near the initial time. The stability and convergence are established by using three theoretical tools: a complementary discrete convolution kernel, a discrete fractional Gronwall inequality and an error convolution structure. Some numerical experiments are reported to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our method.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:In this article, a novel fourth-order accurate difference method is derived for the distributed-order Riesz space fractional diffusion equation in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) cases, respectively. First, the distributed integral terms are discretized by using the Simpson quadrature rule into the multi-term Riesz space fractional diffusion equations. Then, a fourth-order accurate difference scheme is presented to approximate the multi-term Riesz fractional diffusion equations. Moreover, the proposed difference schemes are proved to be unconditionally stable and convergent in L2$$ {L}_2 $$ norm for both 1D and 2D cases. Finally, numerical experiments are given to verify the efficiency of the schemes.

Abstract:This paper detailedly discusses the locally one-dimensional numerical methods for efficiently solving the three-dimensional fractional partial differential equations, including fractional advection diffusion equation and Riesz fractional diffusion equation. The second order finite difference scheme is used to discretize the space fractional derivative and the Crank-Nicolson procedure to the time derivative. We theoretically prove and numerically verify that the presented numerical methods are unconditionally stable and second order convergent in both space and time directions. In particular, for the Riesz fractional diffusion equation, the idea of reducing the splitting error is used to further improve the algorithm, and the unconditional stability and convergency are also strictly proved and numerically verified for the improved scheme.

Abstract:Because of the nonlocal properties of fractional operators, higher order schemes play a more important role in discretizing fractional derivatives than classical ones. The striking feature is that higher order schemes of fractional derivatives can keep the same computation cost with first order schemes but greatly improve the accuracy. Nowadays, there are already two types of second order discretization schemes for space fractional derivatives: the first type is given and discussed in [Sousa and Li, arXiv: 1109.2345v1, 2011; Chen and Deng, Appl. Math. Model., 38 (2014), pp. 3244-3259; Chen, Deng, and Wu, Appl. Numer. Math., 70 (2013), pp. 22-41]; and the second type is a class of schemes presented in [Tian, Zhou, and Deng, Math. Comp., to appear; also available online from arXiv: 1201.5949, 2012]. The core object of this paper is to derive a class of fourth order approximations, called the weighted and shifted Lubich difference operators, for space fractional derivatives. Then we use the derived schemes to solve the space fractional diffusion equation with variable co-efficients in one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases. And the unconditional stability and the convergence with the global truncation error O(tau(2) + h(4)) are theoretically proved and numerically verified.

Abstract:The time fractional dispersive equation is used to model the phenomena of dispersions with memory.By using the techniques of compact schemes,fourth-order four-point stencil and sixth-order fivepoint stencil compact implicit difference schemes were derived for the time fractional dispersive equation.It was shown that the convergence rate of the two compact implicit difference schemes were O(τ2+h4)and O(τ2+h6),respectively.The numerical experiments show that the present compact schemes are effective and with high accuracy.

Abstract:Space fractional advection diffusion equations are better to describe anomalous diffusion phenomena because of non-locality of fractional derivatives, which causes people to confront great trouble in problem solving while enjoying the convenience from mathematical modelling, especially in high dimensional cases. In this paper, we solve the three-dimensional problem by the process of dimension by dimension, which can be achieved through a predictor-corrector algorithm. In time discretization, Crank-Nicolson scheme is adopted to match second-order difference operator of the space direction. Then, the efficiency of this method is demonstrated by some numerical examples finally.
Fourth-order high-precision algorithms for one-sided tempered fractional diffusion equations

Abstract:In this paper, high-order numerical algorithms for two classes of time-independent one-sided tempered fractional diffusion equations were studied. The time derivative was discretized by the backward difference formula, the space tempered fractional derivatives were discretized based on tempered weighted and shifted Grünwald difference operators combined with the quasi-compact technique, and the effective second-order numerical approximations of the left and right third-order Riemann-Liouville tempered derivatives were given, thus the detailed fourth-order numerical schemes of these two classes of equations were derived. With the energy method, we proved rigorously that the numerical schemes were stable and convergent with order $ O(\tau +h^4) $ and were only related to the tempered parameter $ \lambda $. Finally, some examples were given to verify the validity of the numerical schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, fast compact finite difference schemes are derived for fourth-order multi-term fractional sub-diffusion equations with initial singularity under the first Dirichlet boundary conditions. In contrast to the direct scheme, the fast algorithm adopted to approximate the Caputo derivative reduces the computation costs effectively. Sharp error estimate of the proposed scheme for linear models is rigorously presented by the energy method. Furthermore, to handle more intricate nonlinear models, a crucial Grönwall inequality is then deduced to analyse the stability and convergence of the linearized scheme. It is worth pointing out that the Grönwall inequality is also helpful in numerical analysis of multi-step schemes for other problems, such as, integro-differential equations with multiple fractional derivatives. Ultimately, numerical examples are provided to verify the efficiency of the established difference schemes.

Abstract:The equation with the time fractional substantial derivative and space fractional derivative describes the distribution of the functionals of the Levy flights, and the equation is derived as the macroscopic limit of the continuous time random walk in unbounded domain and the Levy flights have divergent second order moments. However, in more practical problems, the physical domain is bounded and the involved observables have finite moments. Then the modified equation can be derived by tempering the Levy measure of the Levy flights and the corresponding tempered space fractional derivative is introduced. This paper focuses on providing the high order algorithms for the modified equation, i.e., the equation with the time fractional substantial derivative and space tempered fractional derivative. More concretely, the contributions of this paper are as follows: (1) Detailed numerical stability analysis and error estimates of the schemes with first order accuracy in time and second order in space are given in complex space, which is necessary since the inverse Fourier transform needs to be made for getting the distribution of the functionals after solving the equation. (2) We further propose the schemes with high order accuracy in both time and space, and the techniques of treating the issue of keeping the high order accuracy of the schemes for nonhomogeneous boundary/initial conditions are introduced. (3) Multigrid methods are effectively used to solve the obtained algebraic equations which still have the Toeplitz structure. (4) We perform extensive numerical experiments, including verifying the high convergence orders and simulating the physical system which needs to numerically make the inverse Fourier transform to the numerical solutions of the equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a fast high order method for the time-fractional diffusion equation on unbounded spatial domains. The proposed numerical method is a combination of a time-stepping scheme and spectral method for the spatial discretization. First, we reformulate the unbounded domain problem into a bounded domain problem by introducing suitable artificial boundary conditions. Then the time fractional derivatives involved in the equation and the artificial boundary condition are discretized using the so-called L2 formula and sum-of-exponentials (SOE) approximation. The former has been a popular formula for discretization of the Caputo fractional derivative, while the latter is a computational cost reducing technique frequently employed in recent years for convolution integrals. The spatial discretization makes use of the standard Legendre spectral method. The stability and the accuracy of the full discrete problem are analyzed. Our obtained theoretical results include a rigorous proof of the convergence order for both uniform mesh and graded mesh, and a stability proof for the uniform mesh. Finally, several numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical results and to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient algorithm is presented by adopting the extrapolation technique to improve the accuracy of finite difference schemes for two-dimensional space-fractional diffusion equations with non-smooth solution. The popular fractional centered difference scheme is revisited and the stability and error estimation of numerical solution are given in maximum norm. Based on the analysis of leading singularity of exact solution for the underlying problem, the extrapolation technique and numerical correction method are exploited to enhance the accuracy and convergence rate of the computation. Two numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical prediction and efficiency of the algorithm. It is shown that, by using the proposed algorithm, both accuracy and convergence rate of numerical solutions can be significantly improved and the second-order accuracy can even be recovered for the equations with large fractional orders.

Abstract:Summary Thispaperestablishesadifferenceapproximationontime-spacefractionaladvectiondispersion equations. Based on the difference approximation an ideal numerical example has been solved, and the result is compared with the one of the rigorous time fractional advection-dispersionequation and the rigorous space fractional advection-dispersionequation respectively. The results show: when time fractional order parameter γ=1 or space fractional order parameter α=2, the numerical calculation result of the time-space fractional advection-dispersionequations is in accordance with that of the rigorous time fractional advection-dispersionequation or the rigorous space fractional advection-dispersion equation. The variation law of the result with parameter is also similar to them, that is when γ is smaller, diffusion is slower; when α is smaller, diffusion is faster. The simulation calculation for a practical example indicates that time-space fractional advection-dispersion equations can simulate the skewness and the tail of anomalous diffusion. This paper provides a efficient tool for the research of fractional advection-dispersion equations.

Abstract:We discuss an efficient higher order finite difference algorithm for solving systems of 3-D reaction–diffusion equations with nonlinear reaction terms. The algorithm is fourth-order accurate in both the temporal and spatial dimensions. It requires only a regular seven-point difference stencil similar to that used in the standard second-order algorithms, such as the Crank–Nicolson algorithm. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the new algorithm.
