Abstract:In multi-hop ad hoc networks, stations may pump more traffic into the networks than can be supported, resulting in high packet-loss rate, re-routing instability and unfairness problems. This paper shows that controlling the offered load at the sources can eliminate these problems. To verify the simulation results, we set up a real 6-node multi-hop network. The experimental measurements confirm the existence of the optimal offered load. In addition, we provide an analysis to estimate the optimal offered load that maximizes the throughput of a multi-hop traffic flow. We believe this is a first paper in the literature to provide a quantitative analysis (as opposed to simulation) for the impact of hidden nodes and signal capture on sustainable throughput. The analysis is based on the observation that a large-scale 802.11 network with hidden nodes is a network in which the carrier-sensing capability breaks down partially. Its performance is therefore somewhere between that of a carrier-sensing network and that of an Aloha network. Indeed, our analytical closed-form solution has the appearance of the throughput equation of the Aloha network. Abstract:Wireless Ad Hoc Networks have experienced great improvement over the past decade. However, IEEE 802.11 DCF, as the standard for Ad Hoc Networks, is still greatly influenced by hidden and exposed node problems. Lots of researches have been performed to solve them, but only a few of them have addressed the tradeoff between the two problems. This paper tries to balance the two problems by distributed terminal coordination. We will present two MAC schemes that import the concept of congestion control algorithms. A model between carrier sensing range and congestion window size is established. According to the simulation results, it is shown that these schemes can achieve good MAC layer performance in terms of one-hop throughput, fairness and speed of throughput convergence.

Abstract:A major obstacle stunting the application of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is the lack of a general throughput analysis theory for such networks. The available works in this area mainly focus on asymptotic throughput study (order sense) in MANETs with omnidirectional antennas or directional antennas. Although the order sense results can help us to understand the general scaling behaviors, it tells us little about the exact achievable throughput. This paper studies the achievable throughput of a MANET where each node is equipped with a directional antenna of beamwidth theta for transmission. A generalized two hop relay scheme with packet redundancy f is adopted for packet routing. Based on the Markov chain and automatic feedback theory, we explore a general theoretical framework that enables the achievable throughput analysis to be conducted for a directional antenna-based MANET. Based on the results of the achievable per node throughput, we further explore the throughput optimization problem for a fixed beamwidth theta and determine the corresponding optimal setting off to achieve the optimal throughput. Numerical studies are also conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of these models.lt shows that the maximum achievable throughput obtained from our theoretical framework matches nicely (with at most 7% difference) with that obtained from simulation under a realistic model. Abstract:The end-to-end throughput of multi-hop communication in wireless ad hoc networks is affected by the conflict between forwarding nodes. It has been shown that sending more packets than maximum achievable end-to-end throughput not only fails to increase throughput, but also decreases throughput owing to high contention and collision. Accordingly, it is of crucial importance for a source node to know the maximum end-to-end throughput. The end-to-end throughput depends on multiple factors, such as physical layer limitations, MAC protocol properties, routing policy and nodes distribution. There have been many studies on analytical modeling of end-to-end throughput but none of them has taken routing policy and nodes distribution as well as MAC layer altogether into account. In this paper, the end-to-end throughput with perfect MAC layer is obtained based on routing policy and nodes distribution in one and two dimensional networks. Then, imperfections of IEEE 802:11 protocol is added to the model to obtain precise value. An exhaustive simulation is also made to validate the proposed models using NS2 simulator. Results show that if the distribution to the next hop for a particular routing policy is known, our methodology can obtain the maximum end-to-end throughput precisely.

Abstract:The performance of 802.11DCF-based ad hoc networks deeply relies on the complex interaction between medium access mechanism and routing scheme.In this paper,we model the interaction and present the method for computing upper and lower bounds of the optimal end-to-end throughput for a given path in the ad hoc networks.Different from the previous researches,we work with a more realistic scenario:the packet is scheduled arbitrarily and the carrier sense range of a node is longer than its transmission range.Furthermore,we analyze other affecting factors in depth,such as multiple routing and packet-drop.Some different and interesting conclusions are drawn from our path-oriented analysis.We believe that the conclusions can be helpful guidelines for upper level applications and routing design.

Abstract:Available works either explore the order sense capacity scaling laws or derive closed-form throughput results for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) where a transmitter randomly probes only once a neighboring node for possible transmission. Obviously, such single probing strategy may result in a significant waste of the precious transmission opportunities in highly dynamic MANETs since the randomly selected node may already get the packets that the transmitter hopes to deliver. In this paper, we consider a two-hop relay MANET where each transmitter may conduct multiple rounds of probing so as to identify a possible receiver. We first develop closed-form expressions for per node throughput capacity in such probing-based network, with a careful consideration of the time cost taken to probe for an eligible receiver in each time slot. Extensive numerical results are further presented to explore the possible maximum per node throughput capacity, the corresponding optimum setting of probing round limit, and also their relationships with the network control parameters, like the probing time limit, the redundancy limit and the number of users, etc.
Re-routing Instability in IEEE 802.11 Multi-hop Ad-hoc Networks.

Abstract:TCP throughput instability is a well-known phenomenon in IEEE 802.11 multi-hop ad-hoc networks. However, we find that this problem is not restricted to TCP traffic only, but also occurs in UDP traffic. The associated throughput oscillations are not acceptable for real-time applications such as video conferencing and voice-over-IP. The paper re-defines this throughput fluctuation as a "re-routing instability problem" since it is caused by the triggering of the re-routing function. In particular, we show that the throughput instability is mainly induced by re-routing, not the binary exponential back-off of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. Turning off the re-routing function, for example, eliminates the problem. We believe that this is the first paper to study this phenomenon in the context of re-routing instability. We propose to modify the ad-hoc routing protocols with a "don't-break-before-you-can-make" strategy. The scheme does not require modifications of the IEEE 802.11 standard, making it readily deployable using existing commercial wireless LAN (WLAN) products. Simulations show that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the throughput variation in a traffic flow by 50-70% and improve the average throughput by up to 11%.
Many-to-One Throughput Capacity of IEEE 802.11 Multi-hop Wireless Networks

Abstract:This paper investigates the many-to-one throughput capacity (and by symmetry, one-to-many throughput capacity) of IEEE 802.11 multi-hop networks. It has generally been assumed in prior studies that the many-to-one throughput capacity is upper-bounded by the link capacity L. Throughput capacity L is not achievable under 802.11. This paper introduces the notion of "canonical networks", which is a class of regularly-structured networks whose capacities can be analyzed more easily than unstructured networks. We show that the throughput capacity of canonical networks under 802.11 has an analytical upper bound of 3L/4 when the source nodes are two or more hops away from the sink; and simulated throughputs of 0.690L (0.740L) when the source nodes are many hops away. We conjecture that 3L/4 is also the upper bound for general networks. When all links have equal length, 2L/3 can be shown to be the upper bound for general networks. Our simulations show that 802.11 networks with random topologies operated with AODV routing can only achieve throughputs far below the upper bounds. Fortunately, by properly selecting routes near the gateway (or by properly positioning the relay nodes leading to the gateway) to fashion after the structure of canonical networks, the throughput can be improved significantly by more than 150%. Indeed, in a dense network, it is worthwhile to deactivate some of the relay nodes near the sink judiciously.

Abstract:One major obstacle stunting the development and application of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is the lack of a thorough understanding on the throughput capacity of these networks. Preliminary works regarding the exact capacity study of MANETs mainly focus on cell-partitioned networks, an oversimplified network model for practical MANETs. This paper studies the exact throughput capacity under a more realistic and practical network model for MANETs, where network nodes randomly move in a continuous unit square without cell-partition and a slotted ALOHA protocol is adopted for medium access control. For the considered ALOHA MANETs (A-MANETs), we first determine its exact throughput capacity based on the successful transmission probability (STP) and also derive the expected end-to-end delay for a capacity achieving routing algorithm. We then develop efficient closed-form approximations to both the STP and the exact throughput capacity in the concerned A-MANET under a popular local transmission scheme, based on which the corresponding capacity optimization issue is explored. Finally, simulation and numerical results are provided to validate the efficiency of our capacity model and to illustrate our theoretical findings.

Another limitation of available works is that the impact of transmission power constraint on the throughput capacity is largely neglected. In most MANET applications, however, the mobile nodes are usually powered by batteries and have limited transmission power. In this paper, we study the exact throughput capacity of MANETs with directional antenna and transmission power constraint, where a generalized twohop relay algorithm with limited packet redundancy is adopted for packet routing. For given transmission power constraint, we first develop a model to map the omnidirectional transmission range to that of the directional one. We then explore the exact throughput capacity under directional transmission and group-based scheduling. Finally, numerical studies are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of these models and validate our theoretical results.

Abstract:One of the main characteristics of wireless ad hoc networks is their node-centric broadcast nature of communication, leading to interferences and spatial contention between adjacent wireless links. Due to such interferences, pessimistic concerns have been recently raised with respect to the decreasing network capacity in wireless ad hoc networks when the number of nodes scales to several orders of magnitude higher. Such studies assume uniformly distributed nodes in the network and randomized traffic patterns. In this paper, we argue that in all cases of end-to-end data communications-including one-to-k unicast and multicast data dissemination as well as k-to-one data aggregation-the maximum achievable end-to-end data throughput (measured on the sources) heavily depends on the strategy of arranging the topology of transmission between sources and destinations, as well as possible per-node operations such as coding. An optimal strategy achieves better end-to-end throughput than an arbitrary one. We present theoretical studies and critical insights with respect to how these strategies may be designed so that end-to-end throughput may be increased. After all, under all circumstances-in either a lightly loaded or a congested network-increasing end-to-end throughput from its baseline is always beneficial to applications using ad hoc networks to communicate.

Abstract:This paper studies the network throughput and transport delay of a multihop wireless random access network based on a Markov renewal model of packet transportation. We show that the distribution of the source-to-destination (SD) distance plays a critical role in characterizing network performance. We establish necessary and sufficient condition on the SD distance for scalable network throughput, and address the optimal rate allocation issue with fairness and the QoS requirements taken into consideration. In respect to the end-to-end performance, the transport delay is explored in this paper along with network throughput. We characterize the transport delay by relating it to nodal queueing behavior and the SD-distance distribution; the former is a local property while the latter is a global property. In addition, we apply the large deviation theory to derive the tail distribution of transport delay. To put our theory into practical network operation, several traffic scaling laws are provided to demonstrate how network scalability can be achieved by localizing the traffic pattern, and a leaky bucket scheme at the network access is proposed for traffic shaping and flow control.

Abstract:Dynamic time-division duplex (D-TDD) transmission in small cell networks have been emerged as one of the promising solutions to support the asymmetric traffic requirements in the next generation cellular mobile communication systems. On the other hand, the backhaul, which carries the traffic between base stations (BSs) and the core network, has great influence on providing reliable and timely connectivity. In this work, we study a two-tier D-TDD network taking the random locations of devices, packet arrival process, scheduling, interference, and backhaul into consideration to understand the influence from backhaul to uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) mean packet throughput per UE (MPT for short). We use an approximate method to derive the interference and successful transmission probability via stochastic geometry, and then achieve the mathematical derivation of DL and UL MPT with different kinds of backhaul using queueing theory tools. Based on the simulation results, we verify the accuracy of our analysis and explore the impact of the service parameters and backhaul.
Balancing Throughput and Fairness for TCP Flows in Multihop Ad-Hoc Networks

Abstract:Analyzing transport layer operation and enhancing its performance over multihop ad hoc networks have attracted a lot of attentions. Although the fundamental reasons for the performance degradation of TCP have been studied for many years, the tight coupling between transport layer and the wireless MAC layer is still not well understood. In this paper, we focus on the interactions between the hidden nodes and network congestion(1). By modeling the frame loss ratios of competing flows, a novel index is presented to measure congestion and fairness of these interfered links simultaneously. We formulate a practical optimization framework for TCP flows, and propose a distributed algorithm to improve the end-to-end throughput, and at the same time, provide per-flow fairness by exploiting cross-layer information. In the link layer, each node uses a proportional controller to determine the ECN marking probability for the purpose of notifying incipient congestion. Then the rate based TCP sender adjusts its sending rate according to the feedbacks from the link layer. Compared with standard TCP/802.11 as well as recent wireless TCP enhancements, our method substantially improves both long-term fairness and short-term fairness without sacrificing the aggregate end-to-end throughput. For some topologies with long hops, the throughputs of our proposed algorithm even outperform basic TCP/802.11 by over 100%.
Impact of Power and Rate Selection on the Throughput of Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract:With the advance of wireless technology, wireless devices are capable of adjusting transmit power and physical (PHY) layer data-rate. In this paper, we investigate the problem of how to adjust the power level and the PHY rate in order to maximize the network throughput in wireless ad hoc networks. Solving this problem can help compute the network capacity of ad hoc networks, which has drawn a lot of attention recently. In our study, we find that there exist intertwined relationships among maximum network throughput, power, and PHY rate. These intertwined relationships make computing the maximum network throughput a difficult problem. To get around the coupled relationships among power, PHY rate and network throughput, we take a simulation-based optimization approach, i.e., use a recursive randomized algorithm to find the solution. We study the convergence and complexity of our algorithm. Our results show that our algorithm always converges and the computation complexity is polynomial. The simulations also show that our algorithm can iteratively improve the network throughput, given an initial feasible power and rate setting.

Abstract:The lack of a general capacity theory on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is still a challenging roadblock stunting the application of such networks. The available works on this line mainly focus on deriving order sense results, which are helpful for us to explore the general scaling laws of throughput capacity but tell us little about the exact achievable throughput. This paper studies the exact per node throughput capacity of a MANET, where the transmission power of each node can be controlled to adapt to a specified transmission range v and a generalized two-hop relay with limited packet redundancy f is adopted for packet routing. Based on the concept of automatic feedback control and the Markov chain model, we first develop a general theoretical framework to fully depict the complicated packet delivery process in the challenging MANET environment. With the help of the framework, we are then able to derive the exact per node throughput capacity for a fixed setting of both v and f. Based on the new throughput result, we further explore the optimal throughput capacity for any f but a fixed v and also determine the corresponding optimum setting of f to achieve it. This result helps us to understand how such optimal capacity varies with v (and thus transmission power) and to find the maximum possible throughput capacity of such a network for any f and v. Surprisingly, our results here indicate that usually such maximum throughput capacity can not be achieved through the local transmission, a fact different from what is generally believed in literature.

Abstract:The issue of Bit-Error-Rate control and the throughput capacity of UWB(Ultra-Wide Band) Wireless Mobile Ad Hoc Networks were studied in this paper. Based on the theory of conflict graph of information sent and events received, the paper mainly addressed the impact of interference among nodes on networks throughput. The numerical value of expectant achievable throughput capacity of the system was reached by solving the linear constraints problem with the throughput graph. A model simulation was conducted to testify the results.

Abstract:It is important but challenging to understand the throughput performance in wireless multi-hop networks. Most previous works show that the M/M/1 model is accurate enough for throughput analysis most of the time. However we notice that without considering the interrelationship between the traffic on nodes, the M/M/1 model is quite inaccurate sometimes, especially on the typical chain topology. Therefore in this paper we propose a model called Traffic-Analysis-Based (TAB) for throughput analysis focusing on chains. TAB obtains the throughput by analyzing the state transition process of the chain as the traffic rate is increasing, based on the traffic interrelationships. Besides the throughput of each node, we also get two significant state transition points. One is the optimal sending rate of traffic, and the other is the lower bound when M/M/1 can be used. Simulation results show that TAB is much more accurate than M/M/1 when the traffic rate is under the second transition point.

Abstract:The licensed-assisted access (LAA) technology has been proposed as a promising solution to increase the network capability by extending the frequency bands for long term evolution networks. The performance evaluation of the LAA systems has been extensively studied in recent years. However, most existing works did not consider the fact that Wi-Fi stations and LAA equipments are typically not synchronized in such a heterogeneous network. They are not aligned in time domain because of different time-slot durations, channel access back off, and contention window sizes. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the throughput performance of the LAA and Wi-Fi coexisting networks with asynchronous channel access. To deal with the asynchronism, we first introduce the concept of the heterogeneous network superframe based on the fact that the timing relation between LAA and Wi-Fi systems will be restored to a fixed pattern after a busy slot. Thereafter, we model the LAA and Wi-Fi channel access behaviors in superframes as 2-D Markov chains, respectively. Based on the Markov chains and the structure of the superframe, we analyze the throughput performance by fully considering the asynchronism of the heterogeneous channel access. The accuracy of our theoretical analysis is validated by numerical results. Meanwhile, we have also investigated the effects of the number of LAA equipments, Wi-Fi stations, and the maximum contention window size upon the system throughput.
