Abstract:Present approaches for the robust optimization of injection molding process parameters cannot thoroughly analyze the influence of uncontrollable factors due to the lack of outer experimental runs.And they are often single-objective optimization with no comprehensive evaluation on the characteristics of molded parts.To overcome these shortcomings,a novel multi-objective robust optimization method is proposed on the basis of parameter design using inner-outer array,analysis of signal to noise ratio(SNR) and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution(TOPSIS).The principal process parameters that have the most significant influence on the part quality are firstly screened out by executing two-level orthogonal experiments and analysis of variance(ANOVA),and then both inner and outer orthogonal arrays can be designed by taking the errors of principal process parameters as noise factors.The quadratic polynomial models for predicting the part quality of given process parameter scheme are formulated on the basis of uniform experimental design and stepwise regression analyses,which are then utilized to efficiently compute the values of quality indices corresponding to all parameter schemes arranged according to the inner-outer array.Thus the SNR of every chosen quality index corresponding to all the parameter schemes of the inner array can be efficiently obtained,based on which the preference of all inner schemes are sorted and the most robust one can be determined.The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated by the robust optimization of the process parameters for the injection of a mobile phone panel.
Simulation-Based Robust Design of Complex Product Considering Uncertainties of Metamodel, Design Variables, and Noise Parameters

Abstract:The uncertainties of design variables, noise parameters, and metamodel are important factors in simulation-based robust design optimization. Most conventional metamodel construction methods only consider one or two uncertainties. In this paper, a new surrogate modeling method simultaneously measuring all the uncertainties is proposed for simulation-based robust design optimization of complex product. The effect of metamodel uncertainty on product performance uncertainty is quantified through uncertainty propagation analysis among design variables uncertainty, noise parameters uncertainty, metamodel uncertainty, and performance uncertainty. Then, the sampling points are selected and the metamodel is constructed based on the predictive interval of product performance and mean square error of the Kriging metamodel. The constructed metamodel is applied to robust design optimization considering multiple uncertainties. Results of two mathematical examples show that the proposed metamodel considering multiple uncertainties increases the result accuracy of robust design optimization. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to robust design optimization of a heat exchanger, and the total heat transfer rate is enhanced under uncertainties of fin structural parameters, operation conditions parameters and simulation metamodel.

Abstract:In the design of complex products such as turbo-generators and compressors, it is very important to optimize the dynamic characteristics of the key components by moving their natural frequencies away from the excitation ones as well as their multiples to avoid resonances and resultant malfunctions. At the same time, the uncertainties such as the fluctuations of material properties inherent in the manufacture of key components will inevitably cause the variation of their structural dynamic characteristics and thus need to be fully considered in the optimization process. Considering that the robustness requirement of structures with uncertain material properties (specifically, uncertain elastic modulus and density) usually varies under different working conditions, the robust equilibrium optimization of structural dynamic characteristics considering different working conditions is investigated in this paper for the first time. Firstly, the robust optimization model for the dynamic characteristics of uncertain structures is constructed with the uncertainties described as interval variables. Subsequently, a novel robust equilibrium optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the constructed robust optimization model. Specifically, a new concept of overlap coefficient between interval boundary angles (OCBA) is proposed with the introduction of an overlap sensitivity factor, based on which the constraint robustness considering the requirements of different working conditions can be flexibly assessed. Then, the robust equilibrium strategy for all structural performance indices are proposed for the direct ranking of various design vectors, based on which the robust equilibrium optimization algorithm is developed. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed robust equilibrium optimization approach are demonstrated by realistic engineering examples including the cone ring fixture of a large turbo-generator and the compressor shell of a refrigerator.
A Gaussian Process Modeling Approach for Fast Robust Design with Uncertain Inputs

Abstract:Many engineering design and industrial manufacturing applications are tasked with finding optimum designs while dealing with uncertainty in the design parameters. The performance or quality of the design may be sensitive to the input variation, making it difficult to optimize. Probabilistic and robust design optimization methods are used in these scenarios to find the designs that will perform best under the presence of known input uncertainty. Robust design optimization algorithms often require a two-level optimization problem (double-loop) to find a solution. The design optimization outer-loop repeatedly calls a series of inner loops that calculate uncertainty measures of the outputs. This nested optimization problem is computationally expensive and can sometimes render the task infeasible for practical engineering robust design problems. This paper details a single-level metamodel-assisted approach for probabilistic and robust design. An enhanced Gaussian Process (GP) metamodel formulation is used to provide exact values of output uncertainty in the presence of uncertain inputs. The GP model utilizes a squared-exponential kernel function and assumes normally distributed input uncertainty. These two factors together allow for an exact calculation of the first and second moments of the marginal predictive distribution. Predictions of output uncertainty are directly calculated, creating an efficient single-level robust optimization problem. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the single-level GP-assisted robust design approach on multiple engineering example problems, including a beam vibration problem, a cantilevered beam with multiple constraints, and a robust autonomous aircraft flight controller design problem. For the optimization problems investigated in this study, the single-level framework found the robust optimum with a 99.9% savings in function evaluations over the standard two-level approach.

Abstract:Structural optimization of complex mechatronic components may involve heterogeneous competing performance indices, including the cost, fixation, benefit, and deviation ones. However, such optimization problems with heterogeneous objectives have not been investigated so far. In this paper, a novel interval heterogeneous-objective robust optimization approach is proposed for complex mechatronic components. First, a unified interval heterogeneous-objective robust optimization model is constructed for mechatronic components with the uncertainties described as interval variables. Subsequently, a new interval robust equilibrium optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the interval heterogeneous-objective robust optimization model. Specifically, the unified formulas for assessing the robustness of interval heterogeneous-objective performance indices and the robust equilibrium among them are derived at first. Then, the preferential guidelines considering the robust equilibrium among all the objective and constraint performance indices are proposed for the direct ranking of various design vectors, and finally, the heterogeneous-objective robust equilibrium optimization of complex mechatronic components is realized by integrating the Kriging technique and the nested genetic algorithm. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed heterogeneous-objective robust optimization approach are verified by a numerical example and a case study.

Abstract:Bayesian optimization is a popular tool for optimizing time-consuming objective functions with a limited number of function evaluations. In real-life applications like engineering design, the designer often wants to take multiple objectives as well as input uncertainty into account to find a set of robust solutions. While this is an active topic in single-objective Bayesian optimization, it is less investigated in the multi-objective case. We introduce a novel Bayesian optimization framework to perform multi-objective optimization considering input uncertainty. We propose a robust Gaussian Process model to infer the Bayes risk criterion to quantify robustness, and we develop a two-stage Bayesian optimization process to search for a robust Pareto frontier, i.e., solutions that have good average performance under input uncertainty. The complete framework supports various distributions of the input uncertainty and takes full advantage of parallel computing. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework through numerical benchmarks.

Abstract:Robust optimization of complex uncertain structures usually involves multiple conflicting and competing structural performance indices. Present approaches for achieving the final design of such an optimization problem always involve a decision-making process, which is a demanding task that requires the rich experience and expert skills of designers. To overcome the difficulty, an interval robust equilibrium optimization approach is proposed to find the optimal design of complex uncertain structure based on the robust equilibrium strategy for multiple conflicting and competing structural performance indices. Specifically, a new concept of closeness and crossing coefficient between interval boundaries (CCCIBs) is proposed atfirst, based on which the tri-dimensional violation vectors of all interval constraints can be calculated and the feasibility of a design vector can be assessed. Then, the robust equilibrium assessment of multiple objective and constraint performance indices is investigated, based on the results of which the feasible design vectors can be directly ranked according to the robust equilibrium strategy for all structural performance indices. Subsequently, the algorithm for the robust equilibrium optimization of complex uncertain structures is developed by integrating the Kriging technique and nested genetic algorithm. The validity, effectiveness, and practicability of the proposed approach are demonstrated by two illustrative examples.

Abstract:For the purpose of improving the mechanical performance indices of uncertain structures with interval parameters and ensure their robustness when fluctuating under interval parameters, a constrained interval robust optimization model is constructed with both the center and halfwidth of the most important mechanical performance index described as objective functions and the other requirements on the mechanical performance indices described as constraint functions. To locate the optimal solution of objective and feasibility robustness, a new concept of interval violation vector and its calculation formulae corresponding to different constraint functions are proposed. The mathematical formulae for calculating the feasibility and objective robustness indices and the robustness-based preferential guidelines are proposed for directly ranking various design vectors, which is realized by an algorithm integrating Kriging and nested genetic algorithm. The validity of the proposed method and its superiority to present interval optimization approaches are demonstrated by a numerical example. The robust optimization of the upper beam in a high-speed press with interval material properties demonstrated the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method in engineering.

Abstract:To address the performance degradations of optimal designs arising from uncertainties using traditional concepts and methodologies, a robust oriented cross entropy method is proposed. To efficiently compute the solutions with robust performances, the normal distribution function is used as the probability density function, and a methodology for evaluating and assigning robust performance to promising solutions is proposed. A statistical model is introduced for the constraint functions to enhance the quality of the final design. To find the global and robust optimal solutions simultaneously in a single run, the original objective rather than the robust performance parameters is used for selecting the elite solutions. Two examples are reported to validate the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In reliability-based and cost-oriented product optimization, the target product reliability is apportioned to subsystems or components to achieve the maximum reliability and minimum cost. Main challenges to conducting such optimization design lie in how to simultaneously consider subsystem division, uncertain evaluation provided by experts for essential factors, and dynamic propagation of product failure. To overcome these problems, a reliability-based and cost-oriented product optimization method integrating fuzzy reasoning Petri net (FRPN), interval expert evaluation and cultural-based dynamic multi-objective particle swarm optimization (DMOPSO) using crowding distance sorting is proposed in this paper. Subsystem division is performed based on failure decoupling, and then subsystem weights are calculated with FRPN reflecting dynamic and uncertain failure propagation, as well as interval expert evaluation considering six essential factors. A mathematical model of reliability-based and cost-oriented product optimization is established, and the cultural-based DMOPSO with crowding distance sorting is utilized to obtain the optimized design scheme. The efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated by the numerical example of the optimization design for a computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tool.

Abstract:In the existing resolution methodology for robust design optimizations, the procedures for solving robust optimization and uncertainty quantization as well as the use of high fidelity models are completely decoupled and independent from each other. As a result, the overall cost is typically the product of the costs of the three approaches. Such methodology is simple but more expensive than necessary. To develop an efficient robust optimizer, a direct coupled solution methodology based on an evolutionary algorithm is proposed. Stochastic approximation method is employed to minimize the computational burdens when computing the gradient information in designing the exploiting phase. Abstract:In the real-world optimization problems, continuous uncertainties (such as field uncertainty and demand uncertainty) are usually unbounded and have unknown probability density functions, which have significant influences on the fluctuation in production. As the classical robust counterpart optimization approach is mainly for dealing with bounded uncertainties, the concept of "flexible uncertainty set" is proposed on the basis of the definitions of the classical box, ellipsoidal, and polyhedral uncertainty sets. Next, the continuous uncertainties can be transformed into bounded ones, which are connected with a predefined "confidence level". Moreover, their corresponding robust formulations and a priori probability bounds of constraints' violation are derived and proven in detail. Several numerical examples (including a real-world process industry example) are introduced to illustrate the new formulations induced by flexible uncertainty sets, which have been proven less conservative and with tight probability bounds of constraints' violation.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel direct interval robust optimization approach is proposed so that the robust optimal design vectors for structures with interval uncertainties can be achieved. A new concept of interval closeness coefficient is proposed to describe the relative positional relationship between the boundaries of two intervals. Subsequently, the explicit formulae for calculating the four interval closeness coefficients between the boundaries of an interval constraint mechanical performance index and those of its corresponding given interval constant are put forward. Consequently, the 3D violation vectors of different interval constraints can be calculated, and the feasibility of a design vector can be evaluated by its total 3D violation vector of all interval constraints. Finally, various design vectors are directly ranked according to the preferential guidelines considering the robustness of all the mechanical performance indices of uncertain structures, which is realized by integrating the Kriging technique and nested genetic algorithm. Unlike the traditional robust optimization of structures involving interval uncertainties, the proposed method can avoid the complicated model transformation process and ensure the robustness of all the mechanical performance indices of the optimal solution. Two examples are thoroughly investigated, the results of which demonstrate the applicability and advantages of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Dynamic characteristics greatly influence the comprehensive performance of a structure. But they are rarely included as objectives in traditional robust optimization of structures. In this study, a robust optimization model including both means and standard deviations of dynamic characteristic indices in the objective and constraint functions is constructed for improving the structural dynamic characteristics and reducing their fluctuations under uncertainty. Adaptive Kriging models are employed for the efficient computation of dynamic characteristics. An intelligent resampling technology is proposed to save computational costs and accelerate convergence of Kriging models, which takes full advantage of the test points for precision verification, the sample points within the local region of the biggest relative maximum absolute error and the near-optimal point to improve the global and local precision of Krigings. The high efficiency of proposed intelligent resampling technology is demonstrated by a numerical example. Finally, an efficient algorithm integrating adaptive Kriging models, Monte Carlo (MC) method, constrained non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (CNSGA) is proposed to solve the robust optimization model of structural dynamic characteristics. Kriging models are interfaced with MC method to efficiently compute the fitness of individuals during CNSGA. The implementation of proposed methodology is explained in detail and highlighted by the robust optimization of a cone ring fixture with lots of circumferentially distributed holes in a large turbo generator aimed at moving its natural frequencies away from the exciting one. The comparison of the optimized design with the initial one demonstrates that the proposed methodology is feasible and applicable in engineering practice.

Abstract:In order to improve the mechanical properties of a structure with uncertain but bounded parameters, a constrained interval robust optimization model is proposed with the center and halfwidth of its most important mechanical performance index described as objectives and the other performance indices described as constraints. The conventional indirect approaches for solving the interval optimization model will result in different optimal solutions when prescribing different satisfactory degrees of interval constraints and also deviates from the original intention of modeling the optimization problem based on interval theory. To overcome the shortcomings of indirect interval optimization approaches, a novel concept of the normalized violation degree of interval constraint (NVDIC) and the NVDIC-based preferential guidelines are proposed for directly sorting different design vectors. A direct interval robust optimization algorithm is proposed, which integrates Kriging models with inner layer genetic algorithms (GAs) to compute the interval bounds of the mechanical performance indices of various design vectors, and realizes the direct sorting of different design vectors by the outer layer non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA) according to the NVDIC-based preferential guidelines. The validity of the proposed direct interval robust optimization algorithm is verified by a numeric example, the superiority of which to the conventional indirect one is discussed in detail. Finally, the robust optimization of a press slider with uncertain material properties demonstrates the feasibility and validity of the proposed method in engineering.

Abstract:Method based on the fuzzy evaluation theories and the least squares approximation was advanced to construct configuration optimization mathematical model.Objective functions of the model were performance,cost and term based on modular architecture of product family.Consequently,an improved Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm(NSGA-II) method was employed to optimize the performance-cost-term multi-objective optimization model of configuration in parallel.As a result,a series of configuration schemes were generated in the form of Pareto optimal set to satisfy individualized customers' demands on the performance,cost and term of product.Finally,an instance related to the project which was applied in the machine industry was given to prove the method's feasibility and validity.

Abstract:Metamaterial (MM) is very promising in engineering application since it exhibits extraordinary physical properties that do not exist in nature. Nevertheless, the development of a MM still faces bottleneck problems such as to maximize negative permeability and ensure the robustness of the high permeability at the working frequency in engineering applications. To address the inefficiencies of existing multi-objective robust optimization methodologies in applications to MM designs, an improved multi-objective genetic algorithm and an adaptive response surface model are proposed. The numerical optimization results of a prototype MM unit have demonstrated the feasibility and merits of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:For the project portfolio selection problem with information uncertainty, traditional methods such as deterministic programming and stochastic programming are not applicable. Under uncertain data, to pursue an absolutely optimal solution is impossible and hence robust solutions are more rational since they remain "close" to optimality (i.e., solution robust) and "almost" feasible (i.e., model robust) for all data scenarios. Therefore, a new modeling approach is needed to provide such robust recommendations. In this paper, a robust optimization mathematical programming model is developed for project portfolio selection with information uncertainty. Introducing the uncertain parameters (e.g., project's return, demand for a certain resource, and etc) into a general deterministic zero-one model, the robust optimization formulation problem is seriously addressed. Robust solutions can then be obtained and analyzed. The trade-off between the probability of solution's feasibility and the loss of optimality is also discussed. A case is used to illustrate the application of the proposed model.
