Abstract:Numerical simulation of fluid structure interaction (FSI) problems is a significant and interesting field in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The material point method (MPM), a relatively novel particle-based method, is extended and benchmarked for simulating interactions between the free surface flow and elastic structure. In the MPM method, both the fluid and structure media are described by Lagrangian particles and the unified governing equations are solved in the Eulerian background mesh and the no-slip boundary condition between the fluid and structure can be satisfied automatically, which imply that the MPM method would be a promising scheme for FSI problems. Three validated test cases are presented. The first one is oil flow in a sloshing tank interacting with an elastic bar, and the second test case is water dam-break flow through an elastic gate, and the last one is water dam-break flow past an elastic obstacle. The results obtained by the MPM method are in good agreement with published experimental results and other numerical simulations, which confirm that the MPM method is a promising and effective numerical algorithm for FSI problems involving the free surface flow.

Abstract:We consider an interface problem often arising in transport problems: a coupled system of partial differential equations with one (elliptic) transport equation on a bounded domain and one equation (in this case the Laplace problem) on the complement, an unbounded domain. Based on the non-symmetric coupling of the finite volume method and boundary element method of [Erath et al., <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1509.00440" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1509.00440">arXiv:1509.00440</a>, 2015] we introduce a robust residual error estimator. The upper bound of the error in an energy (semi)norm is robust against variation of the model data. The lower bound, however, additionally depends on the Peclet number. In several examples we use the local contributions of the a~posteriori error estimator to steer an adaptive mesh-refining algorithm. The adaptive FVM-BEM coupling turns out to be an efficient method especially to solve problems from fluid mechanics, mainly because of the local flux conservation and the stable approximation of convection dominated problems.

Abstract:Elastic materials are ubiquitous in nature and indispensable components in man-made devices and equipments. When a device or equipment involves composite or multiple elastic materials, elasticity interface problems come into play. The solution of three dimensional (3D) elasticity interface problems is significantly more difficult than that of elliptic counterparts due to the coupled vector components and cross derivatives in the governing elasticity equation. This work introduces the matched interface and boundary (MIB) method for solving 3D elasticity interface problems. The proposed MIB method utilizes fictitious values on irregular grid points near the material interface to replace function values in the discretization so that the elasticity equation can be discretized using the standard finite difference schemes as if there were no material interface. The interface jump conditions are rigorously enforced on the intersecting points between the interface and the mesh lines. Such an enforcement determines the fictitious values. A number of new technique are developed to construct efficient MIB schemes for dealing with cross derivative in coupled governing equations. The proposed method is extensively validated over both weak and strong discontinuity of the solution, both piecewise constant and position-dependent material parameters, both smooth and nonsmooth interface geometries, and both small and large contrasts in the Poisson's ratio and shear modulus across the interface. Numerical experiments indicate that the present MIB method is of second order convergence in both $L_\infty$ and $L_2$ error norms.

Abstract:Elasticity theory is an important component of continuum mechanics and has had widely spread applications in science and engineering. Material interfaces are ubiquity in nature and man-made devices, and often give rise to discontinuous coefficients in the governing elasticity equations. In this work, the matched interface and boundary (MIB) method is developed to address elasticity interface problems. Linear elasticity theory for both isotropic homogeneous and inhomogeneous media is employed. In our approach, Lam$\acute{e}$'s parameters can have jumps across the interface and are allowed to be position dependent in modeling isotropic inhomogeneous material. Both strong discontinuity, i.e., discontinuous solution, and weak discontinuity, namely, discontinuous derivatives of the solution, are considered in the present study. In the proposed method, fictitious values are utilized so that the standard central finite different schemes can be employed regardless of the interface. Interface jump conditions are enforced on the interface, which in turn, accurately determines fictitious values. We design new MIB schemes to account for complex interface geometries. In particular, the cross derivatives in the elasticity equations are difficult to handle for complex interface geometries. We propose secondary fictitious values and construct geometry based interpolation schemes to overcome this difficulty. Numerous analytical examples are used to validate the accuracy, convergence and robustness of the present MIB method for elasticity interface problems with both small and large curvatures, strong and weak discontinuities, and constant and variable coefficients. Numerical tests indicate second order accuracy in both $L_\infty$ and $L_2$ norms.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an extended mixed finite element method for elliptic interface problems. By adding some stabilization terms, we present a mixed approximation form based on Brezzi-Douglas-Marini element space and the piecewise constant function space, and show that the discrete inf-sup constant is independent of how the interface intersects the triangulation. Furthermore, we derive that the optimal convergence holds independent of the location of the interface relative to the mesh. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to verify our theoretical results.

Abstract:This article presents an immersed virtual element method for solving a class of interface problems that combines the advantages of both body-fitted mesh methods and unfitted mesh methods. A background body-fitted mesh is generated initially. On those interface elements, virtual element spaces are constructed as solution spaces to local interface problems, and exact sequences can be established for these new spaces involving discontinuous coefficients. The discontinuous coefficients of interface problems are recast as Hodge star operators that are the key to project immersed virtual functions to classic immersed finite element (IFE) functions for computing numerical solutions. An a priori convergence analysis is established robust with respect to the interface location. The proposed method is capable of handling more complicated interface element configuration and provides better performance than the conventional penalty-type IFE method for the H(curl)-interface problem arising from Maxwell equations. It also brings a connection between various methods such as body-fitted methods, IFE methods, virtual element methods, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, a direct finite element method is proposed for solving interface problems on simple unfitted meshes. The fact that the two interface conditions form a $H^{\frac12}(\Gamma)\times H^{-\frac12}(\Gamma)$ pair leads to a simple and direct weak formulation with an integral term for the mutual interaction over the interface, and the well-posedness of this weak formulation is proved. Based on this formulation, a direct finite element method is proposed to solve the problem on two adjacent subdomains separated by the interface by conforming finite element and conforming mixed finite element, respectively. The well-posedness and an optimal a priori analysis are proved for this direct finite element method under some reasonable assumptions. A simple lowest order direct finite element method by using the linear element method and the lowest order Raviart-Thomas element method is proposed and analyzed to admit the optimal a priori error estimate by verifying the aforementioned assumptions. Numerical tests are also conducted to verify the theoretical results and the effectiveness of the direct finite element method.

Abstract:This paper addresses the elliptic interface problem involving jump conditions across the interface. We propose a hybrid mixed finite element method on the triangulation where the interfaces are aligned with the mesh. The second-order elliptic equation is initially decomposed into two equations by introducing a gradient term. Subsequently, weak formulations are applied to these equations. Scheme continuity is enforced using the Lagrange multiplier technique. Finally, we derive an explicit formula for the entries of the matrix equation representing Lagrange multiplier unknowns resulting from hybridization. The method yields approximations of all variables, including the solution and gradient, with optimal order. Furthermore, the matrix representing the final linear algebra systems is not only symmetric but also positive definite. Numerical examples convincingly demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid mixed finite element method in addressing elliptic interface problems.

Abstract:Anisotropic elliptic interface problems with non-homogeneous jump conditions are of great importance but hard to solve numerically. In this work, we develop an easy-to-implement exact-interface-fitted mesh generation (EIFMG) algorithm, and then propose a linearity-preserving finite volume (FV) scheme for solving such problems. Firstly, by curving the cell edges to align with the material interface, the EIFMG algorithm produces a structured exact-interface-fitted curved quadrilateral mesh without changing the total number of cells and associated topology. Secondly, by employing the so-called linearity preserving criterion, our derived FV scheme can be exact on curved quadrilateral meshes for constant coefficient problems with a linear solution even with extremely coarse mesh, which is generally not easy for finite element or finite difference methods to achieve. Moreover, a new method for interpolating vertex unknowns with cell-centered ones is also developed for non-homogeneous jump conditions of solutions and normal fluxes. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the second-order accuracy and linearity-preserving ability of the proposed FV scheme. As far as we know, the algorithm based on FV method in this paper seems to be the best way to handle anisotropic elliptic interface problems with nonhomogeneous jump conditions, judging from the computational performance and efficiency of many typical numerical examples.

Abstract:This paper proposes a nonconforming extended virtual element method for solving elliptic interface problems with interface-unfitted meshes. The discrete approximation form is presented by adding some special terms along the edges of interface elements and several stabilization terms in the discrete bilinear form. The well-posedness of the discrete scheme is obtained and the optimal convergence is proven under the energy norm. It is shown that all results are independent of the position of the interface relative to the mesh and the contrast between the diffusion coefficients. Furthermore, short edges are allowed to appear in the mesh by modifying the stabilization term of the nonconforming virtual element method. Some numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:We present a new fixed mesh algorithm for solving a class of interface inverse problems for the typical elliptic interface problems. These interface inverse problems are formulated as shape optimization prob- lems whose objective functionals depend on the shape of the interface. Regardless of the location of the interface, both the governing partial differential equations and the objective functional are discretized optimally, with respect to the involved polynomial space, by an immersed finite element (IFE) method on a fixed mesh. Furthermore, the formula for the gradient of the descritized objective function is de- rived within the IFE framework that can be computed accurately and efficiently through the discretized adjoint procedure. Features of this proposed IFE method based on a fixed mesh are demonstrated by its applications to three representative interface inverse problems: the interface inverse problem with an internal measurement on a sub-domain, a Dirichlet-Neumann type inverse problem whose data is given on the boundary, and a heat dissipation design problem.

Abstract:Coupling the finite volume method (FVM) and the moving-particle semi-implicit (MPS) method, a conservative hybrid method is proposed for simulation of incompressible interfacial flow. In this hybrid method, bulk flow is resolved using the multi-moment constrained interpolation profile (CIP) FVM while the interface region is rendered using moving particles calculated by several enhanced MPS schemes. A new boundary condition is developed for particles located on the boundary of the interface. Numerical particles in the MPS method are used to determine the density of each mesh cell and the conservation of mass is guaranteed by a volume-fraction remedy procedure. The approach allows accurate interface tracking without diminishing numerical efficiency. Several benchmark simulations are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed hybrid method.

Abstract:A finite element method for elliptic problems with discontinuous coefficients is presented. The discontinuity is assumed to take place along a closed smooth curve. The proposed method allows to deal with meshes that are not adapted to the discontinuity line. The (nonconforming) finite element space is enriched with local basis functions. We prove an optimal convergence rate in the $H^1$--norm. Numerical tests confirm the theoretical results.

Abstract:The elliptic interface problems with imperfect contact have found applications in numerical solutions of the Stefan problem of the solidification process and crystal growth, composite materials, multi-phase flows, etc. In this paper a 1D elliptic interface problem with imperfect contact is considered. A class of high-order compact finite difference schemes are constructed on body-fitted and non-body-fitted mesh, respectively. For each case, the second-, third- and fourth-order approximations of implicit jump conditions are provided by using the jump conditions and its high-order derivatives. Numerical examples are provided to verify the performance of the schemes. The numerical results demonstrate that the schemes have theoretical accuracy for elliptic interface problems with imperfect contact.

Abstract:This article proposes a selective immersed discontinuous Galerkin method based on bilinear immersed finite elements (IFE) for solving second‐order elliptic interface problems. This method applies the discontinuous Galerkin formulation wherever selected, such as those elements around an interface or a singular source, but the regular Galerkin formulation everywhere else. A selective bilinear IFE space is constructed and applied to the selective immersed discontinuous Galerkin method based on either the symmetric or nonsymmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin formulation. The new method can solve an interface problem by a rectangular mesh with local mesh refinement independent of the interface even if its geometry is nontrivial. Meanwhile, if desired, its computational cost can be maintained very close to that of the standard Galerkin IFE method. It is shown that the selective bilinear IFE space has the optimal approximation capability expected from piecewise bilinear polynomials. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate features of this method, including the effectiveness of local mesh refinement around the interface and the sensitivity to the penalty parameters. Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel unfitted finite element method to solve the quad-curl interface problem. We adapt Nitsche's method for curlcurl-conforming elements and double the degrees of freedom on interface elements. To ensure stability, we incorporate ghost penalty terms and a discrete divergence-free term. We establish the well-posedness of our method and demonstrate an optimal error bound in the discrete energy norm. We also analyze the stiffness matrix's condition number. Our numerical tests back up our theory on convergence rates and condition numbers.

Abstract:We present higher-order piecewise continuous finite element methods for solving a class of interface problems in two dimensions. The method is based on correction terms added to the right-hand side in the standard variational formulation of the problem. We prove optimal error estimates of the methods on general quasi-uniform and shape regular meshes in maximum norms. In addition, we apply the method to a Stokes interface problem, adding correction terms for the velocity and the pressure, obtaining optimal convergence results.

Abstract:In this paper, new unfitted mixed finite elements are presented for elliptic interface problems with jump coefficients. Our model is based on a fictitious domain formulation with distributed Lagrange multiplier. The relevance of our investigations is better seen when applied to the framework of fluid structure interaction problems. Two finite elements schemes with piecewise constant Lagrange multiplier are proposed and their stability is proved theoretically. Numerical results compare the performance of those elements, confirming the theoretical proofs and verifying that the schemes converge with optimal rate.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the weak Galerkin finite element method to solve the elliptic interface problem on interface-independent meshes. In the interface element, we use the immersed finite element (IFE) functions satisfying the interface conditions precisely and they have optimal approximation capabilities. In the non-interface element, the continuous element is employed to approximate the exact solution. The optimal convergence orders of error are obtained in the $H^1$ norm and $L^2$ norm. A series of numerical experiments are provided to validate the efficiency of the proposed method.
