Abstract:An active magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) hybrid material was prepared using a novel in situ solvothermal method in the presence of magnetite (Fe3O4) particles, that holds much promise for large-scale synthesis. MIL-101(Fe), an iron terephthalate with pore structure and high resistance to water and common solvents, was functionalized as a model with superparamagnetic qualities, using Fe3O4. The electrostatic interaction between Fe3O4 and metal ions was thereby used to chemically stabilize magnetic nanoparticles, and thus MOF crystals were uniformly enclosed by Fe3O4 to form a homogeneous magnetic product identified as a Fe3O4/MIL-101 composite. This hybrid material with magnetic susceptibility but with the lowest possible loading amount of Fe3O4 was examined, and its potential application for magnetic solid-phase extraction of six organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) from human hair and urine samples, followed by gas chromatography analysis, was assessed. The main effect parameters including solution ionic strength, desorption solvent, extraction time and desorption time were investigated in sequence. Under optimized conditions, this method showed low detection limits (0.21-2.28 ng/mL), wide linearity, and good precision (1.8-8.7% for intra-day, 2.9-9.4% for inter-day). The matrix interference produced by hair or urine could be effectively eliminated using this method, and satisfactory recoveries of the spiked samples were 76.8-94.5% and 74.9-92.1%, respectively, indicating that the Fe3O4/MIL-101 sorbents are feasible for the analysis of trace analytes from biological samples.
Trace Flue Gas Contaminants Poison Coordinatively Unsaturated Metal–Organic Frameworks: Implications for CO2Adsorption and Separation

Abstract:We use electronic structure calculations to examine the impact of trace flue gas contaminants (nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and their hydrates) on two promising coordinatively unsaturated metal-organic framework (MOF) sorbents. Such MOFs have been the subject of recent intense study since their unsaturated "open metal" sites yield dramatically enhanced uptake of CO2 at low partial pressures, ideal for flue gas separation applications. However, the impact of these contaminants on gas adsorption and separation has not been seriously considered. Our computational results suggest that the open metal sites are subject to poisoning by these trace flue gas contaminants. Thus, despite the low (postscrubbing) concentrations of these contaminants, their binding enthalpy is sufficient to outcompete CO2 for binding sites under equilibrium adsorption conditions and (by some estimates) even putative regeneration conditions. This work thus provides guidelines for identifying relevant contaminant species and illustrates the practical concerns in utilizing MOFs in realistic flue gas separation applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of hybrid organic-inorganic materials with porous structure. With the merit of high surface area, uniform nanoscale cavity, good thermal and chemical stability and tailorable chemistry, this class of materials has recently attracted wide attention in sample preparation field. This review mainly focuses on various applications of MOFs as advanced sorbent materials in small organic analytes' enrichment, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides, toxins, dyes, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and other compounds. Β-Ketoenamine Covalent Organic Frameworks Based Magnetic Solid-Phase Microextraction for Rapid Determination of 12 Organophosphate Esters in Surface Water

Abstract:In this work, Fe3O4/Tp-BHBD beta-ketoenamine covalent organic framework (COF) was rapidly prepared. Then, it was used as magnetic solid phase microextraction (MSPE) adsorbents for the adsorption and determination of organophosphate ester (OPE) residues in surface water coupling with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The results of material characterization tests confirmed the generation of magnetized COF. The adsorption process was optimized by Box-Behnken Design and one-factor optimization experiments. After five use cycles, Fe3O4/Tp-DHBD still achieved good adsorption and high recovery. Under the optimal conditions, the developed Fe3O4/Tp-DHBD COF-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS method obtained good linearity for 12 OPEs within 0.25-50.0 ng mL-1 and the limit of detection of 0.02-0.18 ng mL-1. The relative standard deviations were less than 8.6 %. Rapid detection and analysis of three samples from wastewater treatment plant showed that the recoveries of most of target OPEs at different spiked concentrations ranged from 62.0 % to 116.9 %, 60.9 %-115.1 %, and 60.4 %-112.9 %, respectively. In general, the established COF-MSPE method can provide convenient and satisfactory purification for OPEs compounds in surface water by adsorption and desorption, which is promising for specific applications.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials composed of metal ions or clusters coordinated with organic linkers. Due to their extraordinary properties such as high porosity with homogeneous and tunable in size pores/cages, as well as high thermal and chemical stability, MOFs have gained attention in diverse analytical applications. MOFs have been coupled with a wide variety of extraction techniques including solid-phase extraction (SPE), dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE), and magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) for the extraction and preconcentration of metal ions from complex matrices. The low concentration levels of metal ions in real samples including food samples, environmental samples, and biological samples, as well as the increased number of potentially interfering ions, make the determination of trace levels of metal ions still challenging. A wide variety of MOF materials have been employed for the extraction of metals from sample matrices prior to their determination with spectrometric techniques.

Abstract:The practical applications of moisture sensitive metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in the extraction technique are faced with avoided challenges related to competitive adsorption and hydrostability. The target analytes cannot be effectively extracted under humid conditions because of the competitive moisture adsorption and/or framework structure collapse of MOFs. In this Letter, metal organic framework (MOF)@microporous organic network (MON) hybrid materials were explored for the first time as fiber coatings for solid phase microextraction (SPME). Microporous materials with a hydrophobic surface was formed by coating the MOFs (MIL-101 and MOF-5) with MON through a sonogashira coupling reaction. MON acted as a hydrophobic "shield" to hinder the competitive moisture adsorption and improve moisture resistance and stability of the fiber. The sorbent exhibited higher enrichment factors (1215-3805) toward PAHs than other analytes in the water samples. An SPME method using MOF@MON-based fiber was developed to quantitatively determine PAHs. The proposed method was successfully applied to analyze PAHs in environmental water, particulate matter (PM2.5), and food samples. A successful technique is proposed to chemically control MOF for applications in solid-phase sorption-based extraction techniques.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are featured with large specific surface areas, good thermal stability, and abundant pores. These properties are exactly what the sorbents used for extraction or adsorption of interest substances are desired with. While, the low density and hydrophobicity of COFs often makes them difficult to be dispersed evenly and recovered from the aqueous solution. Magnetic covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) inherit magnetic property of the magnetic particles and porous structure of COFs. They have improved dispersity in aqueous solution and phase separation can be rapidly achieved via external magnetic fields. This review summarized the synthesis strategies for MCOFs, and their application in trace environmental organic pollutants analysis by chromatography techniques. The selection of COFs types and modification with active groups for a certain adsorption purpose was discussed, along with the exploration of adsorption mechanisms, which is beneficial for the design and synthesis of MCOFs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based composites with different structure-activity relationships have been widely used in the field of organic pollutant adsorption and extraction. Here, two MOF-on-MOF composites with different structures (yolk-shell and core-shell) from homologous sources were prepared by a simple in-situ growth synthesis method and structural regulation. In order to verify the effect of composite structure on the extraction capacity, the adsorption performance of the yolk-shell structure (YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF) and the core-shell structured (NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF) material were compared by using them as coating material of direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) to enrich six pesticides in five matrices. The results showed that because of the unique hollow hierarchical structure, high specific surface area (930.68 m2 g-1), abundant and open active sites, and synergistic and complementary adsorption forces, YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF composites had the maximum adsorption amount of 36.01-66.31 mg g-1 under the same experiment condition, which was 6.81%-34.26 % higher than that of NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of the prepared materials was verified and elaborated through theoretical simulations and material characterization. Under the optimized conditions, the YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF-coated SPME-HPLC-UV method had a wide linear range (0.241-500 μg L-1), a good linear correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.9988), a low detection limits (0.072-0.567 μg L-1, S/N = 3) and low quantification limits (0.241-1.891 μg L-1, S/N = 10). The relative standard deviations of individual fibers and different batches of fibers were 0.47-6.20 % and 0.22-2.48 %, respectively, and individual fibers could be recycled more than 104 times. This work provided a good synthetic route and comparative ideas for exploring the in-situ growth synthesis of yolk-shell composites with reasonable structure-activity relationships.

Abstract:Nowadays, the detection and removal of environmental pollutants are particularly important, owing to their harmful influence on human beings' health. Specifically, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the hot materials with great potential have been widely employed as adsorbents for pollutants removal, as well as matrixes for mass spectrometry detection. In this work, magnetic Zr-based MOF (denoted as Fe3O4@PDA@ZrMOF) with outstanding properties, such as low background interference, high desorption/ionization efficiency, excellent signal reproducibility, ultrahigh surface area and strong magnetic responsiveness, was synthesized by a modified thermal annealing method. The Fe3O4@PDA@ZrMOF not only can be utilized as adsorbent towards small molecules by π-π stacking interaction between nitrophenols and ZrMOF, but also can serve as a matrix for detection of small molecules under the negative ion mode of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). As a result, with the use of Fe3O4@PDA@ZrMOF, the detection limits of 4-nitrocatechol and 4-nitroguaiacol were estimated to be about 68 μg/ml and 25 μg/ml, respectively. In addition, enrichment of nitrophenols from PM2.5 was investigated. The detected mass concentrations of 4-nitrocatechol and 4-nitroguaiacol in collected PM2.5 samples were 0.11 ng/m3 and 0.15 ng/m3, respectively, indicating the highly efficient enrichment performance of Fe3O4@PDA@ZrMOF for low-abundance nitrophenol compounds in the environment.

Abstract:Detecting and analyzing of the trace organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the real water has become a big challenge. In this work, a novel functional electrospun nanofiber membrane () was synthesized through the in situ growth of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) on a polyacrylonitrile electrospun nanofiber membranes under room temperature and used in the solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) to enrich trace organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water. The resulted composite consisted of numerous nanofibers coated ample porous COFs spheres (~ 500 nm) and owned stable crystal structure, abundant functional groups, good stability. In addition, the enrichment experiments clearly revealed that exhibited rather outstanding performance on adsorbing the trace OCPs (as low as 10 ng L−1) with the enrichment of 482–2686 times. Besides, displayed good reusability and could be reused 100 times. Notably, in the real water samples (sea water and river water), the high enrichment factors and recovery rates strongly confirmed the feasibility of for detecting the trace OCPs. Furthermore, due to the synergy of π-π stacking interaction and hydrophobic interaction between the OCPs molecules and , the OCPs could be efficiently adsorbed on , even under the extremely low driving force.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an extraordinarily versatile class of porous materials renowned for their intricate three-dimensional skeletal architectures and exceptional chemical properties. These extraordinary attributes have pushed MOFs into the vanguard of diverse disciplines such as microporous conduction, catalysis, separation, biomedical engineering, and electrochemical sensing. The focus of this review is to offer a comprehensive summary of recent advancements in designing MOF-based electrochemical sensors for detecting organic small molecules. offer a comprehensive survey of the recent progress in the methodologies adopted for the construction of MOF composites, covering template-assisted synthesis, Modification in synthesis, and post-synthesis modification. In addition, we discuss the practical application of MOF-based electrochemical sensors in the detection of organic small molecules. Our findings highlight the superior electrochemical sensing capabilities of these novel composites compared to those of their pristine counterparts. In conclusion, we provide a condensed perspective on the potential future trajectories in this domain, underscoring the impetus for continued enquiry and enhancement of MOF composite assemblies. With sustained investigation, the horizon appears bright for electrochemical sensing of small organic molecules and their myriad applications.
Magnetic solid phase extraction of N- and S-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at ppb levels by using a zerovalent iron nanoscale material modified with a metal organic framework of type Fe@MOF-5, and their determination by HPLC

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks of type MOF-5 exhibit good adsorption capacity for many organic compounds. The authors have used nanoscale silica-coated zerovalent iron and MOF-5 to prepare, by co-precipitation, a novel magnetic nanomaterial of type Fe@MOF-5. Its morphology and structure were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The nanomaterial is shown to be well suited for magnetic solid phase extraction for five kinds of N- and S-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons prior to quantitation by HPLC. The limits of detection are in the 25 to 33 ng⋅L−1 concentration range. Four real water samples were used to validate the method, and the recoveries of spiked samples with concentrations of 5 and 10 ppb were found to be in the range between 92.6 and 97.3% (n = 3). The Fe@MOF-5 sorbent obviously has excellent adsorption capability for such compounds, can be fairly easily synthesized, displays sensitivity, simplicity, ease of operation, and can be prepared at low costs. Abstract:Human health is always under global spotlight, but now it suffers from severe environmental issue and various diseases. Developing highly selective and effective extraction technique for environmental pollutant removal and target protein/peptide molecules conduces to the solution of environmental contamination and early disease detection, which will promise human health to a great degree. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are typical porous nanomaterials featuring rigid structure, large specific surface area, thermal and chemical stability, numerous active sites and easy functionalization. Moreover, multitudinous combination of metal centers and organic ligands often endows MOFs with structure and function diversity. Owing to such splendid merits, MOFs are able to act as advanced adsorbents for sample-pretreatment in proteomics and environmental field, which indicates great efficiency, reproducibility, convenience and cost-effectiveness. In this review, the novel design of MOFs and their applications in proteomics and environmental research are roughly summarized. We first introduce the representative researches of functional MOFs in protein post-translational modifications including glycosylation and phosphorylation, mainly focusing on hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) or metal-oxide affinity chromatography (MOAC). The important role of MOFs in enzyme immobilization is also covered. Then MOF-based adsorptive removal of diverse environmental contaminants embracing plasticizers, pesticides and varied water pollutants (pharmaceutical and personal care products, organic dyes and heavy metals), in which multiple chemical and non-chemical interactions play a vital role, is emphatically discussed. Finally, we analyze the existing problems and challenges in the way of wider practical applications and put forward prospective anticipation.

Abstract:Developing a rapid sample pretreatment method with high enrichment capability and selectivity is important for developing novel analytical techniques in food and environmental safety monitoring. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are multifunctional three-dimensional materials that can be self-assembly prepared from organic ligands and inorganic metal ions or a metal cluster. MOFs have high specific surface areas, good adsorption performance, tunable porosity, and modifiable structures that can be deliberately modulated. They have been widely applied in photoelectrocatalysis, adsorption/separation, drug delivery, sensor detection, and more, because of their superparamagnetism, rapid adsorption/separation, and reusability. As effective adsorbents, magnetic MOFs (MMOFs) have attracted enomous attentions in analytical chemistry and have been used in sample collection and pre-enrichment, solid-phase extraction, and solid-phase microextraction in recent years. In this review, we summarize recent developments in the preparation of MMOFs, understanding of their structural characteristics and adsorption mechanisms, and their applications in food quality/safety and pretreatment. Future prospects in research and development are also discussed.

Simultaneous effervescence-assisted microextraction and magnetic adsorbent generation for rapid and cost-effective organochlorine pesticides analysis

Abstract:This study introduced an innovative magnetic effervescence-assisted microextraction method, streamlining the preparation of effervescent tablets through a one-pot method that blends a CO2 donor (Na2CO3) and an H+ donor (NaH2PO4) with bare magnetic particles (Fe3O4) and an adsorbent (hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes), followed by pressing. During the extraction process, the bare magnetic particles and adsorbent undergo in-situ self-assembly to create a magnetic adsorbent. The effervescence generates bubbles that enhance effective extraction and magnetism facilitates the easy separation of the magnetic adsorbent from the sample solution, completing the process within 4 min. Applied to organochlorine pesticide analysis in fruit juices and herbal extracts, the method exhibits excellent linearity (R2 > 0.993), sensitivity (detection limits: 0.010-0.125 ng/mL), accuracy (recoveries: 85.8-99.9%), and precision (RSDs < 9.7%) with GC-ECD. Overall, this approach stands out for its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and suitability for on-site analysis, owing to its operational ease and independence from specialized equipment.

Abstract:Food and human biological samples analysis are of great importance for human health. However, due to the complexity of sample matrices and low concentrations of target analytes, sample preparation is essentially critical for these samples through the whole analytical workflow. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of synthesized functional nanomaterial, have been well recognized as novel adsorbents to enhance the sensitivity of current analytical methods and greatly assist the determination of potentially harmful substances present in food and biological samples. This critical review summarized the most advances in the applications of MOFs or hybrid MOFs as adsorbents for food and biological analysis in the past five years, particularly pertaining to sample preparation purpose including removal, adsorption, and enrichment of environmental contaminants. The synthetic routes and analytical performance of representative MOFs or MOFs composites are discussed. The limitations in preparation and application of reported MOFs adsorbents are discussed and the improvement methods for these limitations also have been concluded in the future perspectives. Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) exhibit excellent extraction performance in sample pretreatment, but their wider application is hindered by some inherent drawbacks. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel hybrid material with large specific surface area, good chemical stability and reusability, which is suitable as a solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for the efficient extraction of flavonoids. Importantly, due to the synergistic effect, the obtained hybrid material showing a higher extraction efficiency than individual MOF and COF. This is mainly due to the obtained hybrid material combines the high specific surface area of MOF and multiple interactions (hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interaction) with flavonoids conferred by the COF structure. Then, a sensitive analytical method for flavonoids with ideal linear range (1-500 ng mL −1 ), low detection limit (0.15-0.41 ng mL −1 ) and good repeatability (2.64-6.20%) was developed under optimized conditions. In addition, the hybrid sorbent has better selectivity for hydrophobic targets containing multiple hydrogen bond acceptors/donors. Finally, the established method was applied to the determination of flavonoids in different food samples, and satisfactory recoveries (81.4-102.1%) were obtained, which initially confirmed its applicability.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have been widely used in food contamination adsorption and detection due to their large specific surface area, specific pore structure and flexible post-modification. MOFs with specific pore size can be targeted for selective adsorption of some contaminants and can be used as pretreatment and pre-concentration steps to purify samples and enrich target analytes for food contamination detection to improve the detection efficiency. In addition, MOFs, as a new functional material, play an important role in developing new rapid detection methods that are simple, portable, inexpensive and with high sensitivity and accuracy. The aim of this paper is to summarize the latest and insightful research results on MOFs for the adsorption and detection of food contaminants. By summarizing Zn-based, Cu-based and Zr-based MOFs with low cost, easily available raw materials and convenient synthesis conditions, we describe their principles and discuss their applications in chemical and biological contaminant adsorption and sensing detection in terms of stability, adsorption capacity and sensitivity. Finally, we present the limitations and challenges of MOFs in food detection, hoping to provide some ideas for future development.
