Abstract:A unique urchin-like CoZnAl-LDH/RGO/g-C3N4 (LDH/RGO/CN) Z-scheme photocatalyst, which is fabricated by the hydrothermal synthesis of CoZnAl-LDH and the in situ loading of RGO and g-C3N4, is developed for the photocatalytic conversion of CO2. The special spiny external surface and hollow inner cavity endow LDH/RGO/CN with a significantly enhanced light-harvesting capacity. The well-distributed g-C3N4 nanosheets on the CoZnAl-LDH nanoplates, combined with RGO as an electron mediator, constructs an excellent heterosystem with numerous interfaces, efficient charge separation and highly exposed catalytic active sites. The Z-scheme charge-transfer process promotes the oxidizability and reducibility of CoZnAl-LDH and g-C3N4. Furthermore, the synergistic effect among the components contributes to intense adsorption and chemical activation towards CO2, which reduces the reaction barrier for CO2 photoreduction. As a result, the optimized LDH/RGO/CN exhibits highly efficient and selective photocatalytic CO2 conversion to CO. The special 3D urchin-like architecture paves a new way for design of photocatalyst with ideal performance.

Abstract:Converting CO2 into chemical energy by efficient photocatalysts is a promising strategy to meet the increasing energy demand and decrease greenhouse gases. In this work, hierarchical ZnO@ZnFe2O4 hollow polyhedrons decorated with CdS quantum dots were designed and prepared to improve photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. The facile strategy for the synthesis of hierarchical ZnO@ZnFe2O4 hollow polyhedrons involves the synthesis of ZnO hollow polyhedrons derived from the thermal decomposition of 2-Methylimidazole zinc salt (ZIF-8) precursor and in situ generating Zn-Fe layer double hydroxide nanosheets on the surface of ZnO hollow polyhedrons and subsequent thermal treatment. More importantly, the in situ formation of ZnFe2O4 nanosheets can form strong interaction between ZnO hollow polyhedrons and ZnFe2O4 nanosheets. The hierarchical hollow polyhedral structure of the ZnO@ZnFe2O4 sample possesses more preferable active sites to promote CO2 adsorption and reduction process. The prepared hierarchical ZnO@ZnFe2O4 hollow polyhedron sample shows a significantly enhanced performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction compared with single-component catalysts (ZnO, ZnFe2O4, and CdS) with a CO evolution rate of 95.84 μmol g−1h−1. The decoration of CdS quantum dots makes the ternary heterostructure hybrid form multichannel charge transfer path, which further accelerate charge separation and enhance electrons utilization, resulting in a significant improvement of photocatalytic activity. Noticeably, the CO evolution rate reaches 197.66 μmol g−1h−1, 3 and 2 times higher than that of the bare ZnO and binary ZnO@ZnFe2O4 hollow polyhedrons, respectively. This work gives a promising direction to prepare high-active photocatalysts for solar fuel production.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to solar fuel is a promising route to alleviate the ever-growing energy crisis and global warming. Herein, to enhance photoconversion efficiency of CO2 reduction, a series of direct Z-scheme composites consisting of β-AgVO3 nanoribbons and InVO4 nanoparticles (InVO4/β-AgVO3) are prepared via a facile hydrothermal method and subsequent in situ growth process. The prepared InVO4/β-AgVO3 composites exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity for reduction of CO2 to CO under visible-light illumination. A CO evolution rate of 12.61 μmol·g-1·h-1 is achieved over the optimized 20% In-Ag without any cocatalyst or sacrificial agent, which is 11 times larger than that yielded by pure InVO4 (1.12 μmol·g-1·h-1). Moreover, the CO selectivity is more than 93% over H2 production from the side reaction of H2O reduction. Significantly, based on the results of electron spin resonance (ESR) and in situ irradiated XPS tests, it is proposed that the synthesized InVO4/β-AgVO3 catalysts comply with the direct Z-scheme transfer mechanism. Significantly improved photocatalytic activities for selective CO2 reduction could be primarily ascribed to effective separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and enhanced reducibility of photoelectrons at the conduction band of InVO4. This work provides a new insight for constructing highly efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction systems toward solar fuel generation.
S-scheme heterojunction based on p-type ZnMn2O4 and n-type ZnO with improved photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity

Abstract:Inspired by the carbon cycle in nature, it is promising to convert CO2 into energy-dense hydrocarbon fuels via photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In the present paper, hierarchical ZnMn2O4/ZnO nanofibers were prepared as photocatalysts by electrospinning and calcination. They outperformed pristine ZnO nanofibers with about 4-fold increment in CO and CH4 yields. Except for the advantages coming from the design, such as more exposed active sites and multiple light reflections, other benefits derived from interface charge transfer are also important. To uncover this, density functional theory calculation (DFT), along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed. Photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL spectroscopy revealed that the charge separation efficiency in the composite was significantly elevated. Step-scheme (S-scheme) charge transfer was testified in the composite. This result, for the first time, exemplifies that S-scheme charge-transfer can also be realized in heterojunction based-on p-type ZnMn2O4 and n-type ZnO. It provides a new insight into the design of other S-scheme photocatalysts, which are composed of p-type and n-type semiconductors.

Abstract:The ZnIn2S4/BiVO4 heterostructures were elegantly designed through assembling ZnIn2S4 nanosheets onto the surface of BiVO4 decahedrons. This composite photocatalyst exhibits efficient photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into CO with a detectable amount of CH4 in the presence of water vapor. An electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR) technique and density function theory (DFT) calculation affirm the direct Z-scheme structure in ZnIn2S4/BiVO4. The larger surface photovoltage (SPV) change and the longer liquid photoluminescence (PL) lifetime of the heterostructure, compared to the individual ZnIn2S4 and BiVO4 components, demonstrate that the Z-scheme structure can effectively promote the recombination of the photogenerated holes in the valence band (VB) of the ZnIn2S4 nanosheet with the electrons in the conduction band (CB) of the decahedral BiVO4 and lead to the abundant electrons surviving in the CB of ZnIn2S4 and holes in the VB of BiVO4, thus enhancing photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. This study may make a potential contribution to the rational construction and deep understanding of the underlying mechanism of direct Z-schemes for advanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Developing highly-selective and efficient photocatalysts for converting CO2 into carbon-based fuels by solar energy is desirable, whereas it is still a severe challenge. Herein, we present a unique interfacial Mo-S bond bridged hierarchical S-scheme heterostructured photocatalysts, prepared by in-situ loading ZnIn2S4 nanoflakes (ZIS-NFs) on the Bi2MoO6 porous micro-spheres (BMO-PMs) assembled from numerous nanosheets. The interfacial Mo-S bonds can reinforce the separation and migration of photoinduced charge carriers via the S-scheme mechanism in the BMO@ZIS heterostructure. Besides, its hierarchical heterostructure can improve the visible light response ability, and afford plenty of active sites so as to benefit the CO2 adsorption and activation. Specifically, the combined results of experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the fine heterostructure can not only convert the endoergic rate-determining step of bare ZIS (namely, CO2* hydrogenation to form COOH*) to an exoergic reaction process and lower the overall activation energy barrier, but also boost the desorption of CO* from the ZIS surface. As a result, in existence of H2O vapor without any sacrificial agents, the optimum photocatalyst (BMO@ZIS-0.4) manifests the outstanding CO2 photoreduction activity, with a CO yield and selectivity of 23.11 mu mol g- 1h- 1 and 93.1 %, respectively, higher than those of the most reported photocatalysts. This work offers an in-depth insight for fabricating the interfacial chemical bond modulated hierarchical S-scheme heterostructure with a remarkable performance of CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Tubular graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalyst has received considerable attention in solar to chemical energy conversion due to its appealing intrinsic photoelectrical properties and the favorable geometric configuration. However, it still suffers from severe charge recombination, which causes moderate photocatalytic performance. Herein, ZnIn2S4 nanosheets modified hexagonal g-C3N4 tubes (ZIS/HCNT) were fabricated through an in situ growth approach. By rational construction of large contact area and strong interfacial interaction, an effective Step like-scheme (S-scheme) charge transfer mode was established over ZIS/HCNT, which was confirmed by the in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. Benefited from the facilitated charge separation efficiency and remained strong redox abilities, ZIS/HCNT exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic conversion rate of CO2 to CO (883 μmol h−1 g−1), which was about 13 and 2.4 times higher than that of HCNT and ZIS, respectively. This work provides a paradigm of upgrading photocatalytic CO2 reduction through a rational structural design to regulate charge transfer.

Abstract:The Z-scheme g-C3N4/CdS@rGO photocatalyst with a staggered structure which enhances the photoreduction of CO2 under UV-Vis light irradiation. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) image shows that g-C3N4/CdS@rGO has unique lamellar staggered structure. Photoelectrochemical characterizations including Fluorescence lifetime (FL), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Photoluminescence (PL), and Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) explain that the lamellar staggered structure effectively improves the separation and transport capabilities of electrons. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and energy band position analysis prove that the electron transfer path of g-C3N4/CdS conforms to the Z-scheme mechanism. The π-π conjugation effect of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and g-C3N4 effectively promotes the excitation of electrons on g-C3N4, and rGO can reduce the photocorrosion of CdS and improve its stability. Then, the lamellar staggered structure which improves the photocatalytic CO2 reduction ability is discussed in detail, and the possible process of the CO2 reduction reaction was explored by in-situ FT-IR.

Abstract:Z-scheme g-C3N4/Ag3VO4/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) photocatalysts with multi-interfacial electron-transfer paths enhancing CO2 photoreduction under UV–vis light irradiation were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal process. Transmission electron microscope images displayed that the prepared photocatalysts have a unique 2D–0D–2D ternary sandwich structure. Photoelectrochemical characterizations including TPR, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and linear sweep voltammetry explained that the multi-interfacial structure effectively improved the separation and transmission capabilities of photogenerated carriers. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy and band position analysis proved that the electron-transfer mode of g-C3N4/Ag3VO4 meets the Z-scheme mechanism. The introduction of rGO provided more electron-transfer paths for the photocatalysts and enhanced the stability of Ag-based semiconductors. In addition, the π–π conjugation effect between g-C3N4 and rGO further improved the generation and separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Abstract:Due to the high charge separation efficiency leading to high photocatalytic activity, there has been significant interest in enhancing the charge separation ability of photocatalysts by controlling the heterojunction structure. To investigate the effect of the heterojunction structure on the photocatalytic performance of composite catalysts and understand its corresponding mechanism, a Z-scheme ZnFe2O4/ZnO/CdS heterojunction was constructed using the ultrasound method and used for CO2 photoreduction. The Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst demonstrates elevated photocatalytic and charge separation efficiencies. Specifically, the conversion rate for the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CH4 reaches 105.9 μmol g-1 h-1, surpassing that of the majority of previously reported semiconductor photocatalysts like ZnFe2O4/CdS. This research offers a fresh perspective on the development of innovative heterojunction photocatalysts and broadens the utilization of ternary composite materials in CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:The development and synthesis of high-efficient, stable, and cost-effective photocatalysts to reduce both world-wide energy and environmental issues are the most significant challenge in CO2 reduction. Herein, we explore the photocatalytic performance over NiFeV layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets, g-C3N4, and NiFeV-LDH/g-C3N4 heterostructures, which convert CO2 into high value-added fuels, such as CO and CH4. The 2D/2D hierarchical flower-like structure created an outstanding heterosystem with close interfaces and prominently exposed catalytic active sites to dramatically improve light-harvesting ability. The charge transfer among the individual components made the separation of photogenerated charge carriers easier and lessened their recombination rate, enhancing the photoreduction of CO2. The ratio of g-C3N4 to NiFeV-LDH in term of weight had a significant impact on the photocatalytic activity of the NiFeV-LDH/g-C3N4 heterostructure. The photocatalyst generated the maximum yields of CH4 (15.2 μmol h−1g−1) when the weight ratio of g-C3N4 to NiFeV-LDHs was 15%, which was 4.04 times that of pure NiFeV-LDH. The yield of CO was 13.05 μmol h−1g−1, 3.15 times that of pure NiFeV-LDH. Furthermore, during cycling experimental runs, the optimized NiFeV-LDH/g-C3N4-15% heterostructure exhibited a remarkable photostability with no discernible change in the amounts of CO and CH4 formation. The significantly improved photocatalytic performance towards CO2 reduction was confirmed by the XPS and HRTEM analyses, which showed strong electronic interactions and promoted charge transfer between heterostructure components. The current study provides a feasible way to enhance the photocatalytic performance of LDH-based heterostructures and opens up new prospects for developing LDH-based photocatalysts towards CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Developing a photocatalyst for efficient reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a long-term goal to address global climate change. In this work, a tube-like indium oxide@indium phosphide/cuprous oxide (In2O3@InP/Cu2O) photocatalyst was prepared by annealing-phosphidation of In-Materials of Institute Lavoisier-68 (In-MIL-68) followed by electrodeposition of Cu2O, which was used to reduce CO2 with water under light irradiation. Partial phosphidation of In2O3 endowed In2O3@InP/Cu2O with strong light-harvesting ability. The In2O3@InP heterojunction combined with in situ loaded Cu2O provided a dual Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient electrons-holes separation. Under the synergisms of each component, the optimized In2O3@InP60/Cu2O-1 exhibited strong adsorption of CO2 and excellent photocatalytic performance in CO2 reduction. The yields of CO and CH4 were 13.7 and 38.8 μmol g-1, respectively, after 5 h simulated light illumination, higher than the corresponding yields with In2O3 (CO: 7.2 μmol g-1, CH4: 13.2 μmol g-1). This study may provide some insights into the design of specific ternary photocatalysts with dual Z-scheme charge transfer mode for CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Spinel ZnFe2O4 photocatalyst has been widely applied in CO2 reduction due to its negative enough conduction band edge and relatively narrow band gap, which enable the generation of strong reduction electrons in the presence of light irradiation. Unfortunately, the catalytic performance of pure ZnFe2O4 was seriously hindered because of inefficient charge transfer. Here, Z-scheme α-Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4 heterojunctions were synthesized by coupling α-Fe2O3 nanosheets with spinel ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and applied to the photoreduction of CO2. The α-Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4 heterojunctions realized high charge separation efficiency and strong redox ability. As a result, the CH4 generation rate of α-Fe2O3/ZnFe2O4 heterojunctions was 2.6 times higher than that of ZnFe2O4. This work exhibits a new strategy to design ZnFe2O4-based Z-scheme heterojunction for converting CO2 to hydrocarbon fuels.

Abstract:Efficient photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into energy-rich chemicals is of great significance for both environmental conservation and alleviating the energy crisis. However, convenient synthesis of low-cost, durable and eco-friendly photocatalysts with a novel morphology or structure for highly selective photocatalytic CO2 reduction remains a challenge. Herein, Co3O4 hierarchical nanosheets were synthesized by calcination of novel cobalt metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets prepared by a facile oil bath method. In such Co MOF nanosheets, 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid was chosen as the organic linker, rather than the commonly used 2-methylimidazole for ZIF-67. After thermal treatment in air, the obtained Co3O4 inherited the 2D morphology of its MOF template and evolved into hierarchical nanosheets which were composed of small nanoparticles. Benefiting from the large surface area, abundant mesoporous structure and good capability towards the separation and transfer of photo-generated charge carriers induced by less internal oxygen vacancies, the Co3O4 hierarchical nanosheets showed a CO generation rate of 39.70 μmol h-1 in visible-light photocatalytic CO2 reduction, which was superior to that of Co3O4 nanoparticles and commercial Co3O4. What's more, a CO selectivity of 77.3% was achieved, which is among the highest of cobalt-based spinel oxide photocatalysts for CO2 conversion.
Hierarchical Double-Shelled CoP Nanocages for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Visible-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction is considered an appealing strategy to mitigate the energy crisis and environmental issues, whereas the reactivity is limited due to the difficulties in activation of inert CO2 molecule and efficient transportation of photoinduced carriers. Herein, we report the design of novel Fe doped CoP hierarchical double-shelled nanocages (Fe-CoP HDSNC) via a MOF-templated approach for highly efficient visible-light-driven CO2 reduction. The unique hierarchical double-shelled hollow architectures can greatly shorten the charge transfer distances and also expose abundant reactive sites. Moreover, Fe atoms doping is able to reduce the CO2 activation energy barrier through stabilizing the *COOH intermediates and promote the CO desorption by destabilizing the CO* adduct. As expected, the Fe-CoP HDSNC achieves an unprecedented catalytic efficiency in visible-light-driven CO2 reduction with an up to 3.25% apparent quantum yield and 90.3% CO selectivity, superior to most of the state-of-the-art photocatalysts under comparable conditions. Abstract:Porous carbon microtubule (PCMT)-scaffolding semiconductor heterostructures were exquisitely designed through the in situ growth of ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) ultrathin nanosheets onto In2O3 nanoparticle layers generated on the surface PCMT (abbreviated as PCMT@In2O3/ZIS) toward the efficient photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into CO. The pronounced photocatalytic performance for CO2 photoreduction into CO is attributed to a synergistic effect of the following factors: (1) the multistage hopping of the charge carriers among In2O3, ZIS, and PCMT greatly reduces the charge recombination in In2O3 and ZIS. (2) The mesoporous feature of the PCMT renders the large surface area and abundant active sites to accumulate the local concentration of CO2 in the heterostructures. (3) The existence of a large amount of carbon defects in PCMT promotes the activity of the absorbed CO2 molecules. (4) The tubular structures with two open ends of PCMT may favor the fast diffusion of the reactants and products, and the optical absorption can also be increased by multi-light scattering/reflection in the interior void. (5) The unique fabrication route leads to an intimate and tight contact among PCMT, In2O3, and ZIS, which is also favorable for the charge migration. This work makes a contribution to the development of a complex hollow photocatalysis system for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:In this article, the hollow counterpart of H‐ZIF‐67‐on‐InOF‐1 presents a larger specific surface area after being acid‐etched, and its corresponding bimetallic oxide of H‐Co3O4/In2O3 owns abundant heterogeneous interfaces, which show a satisfactory photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The photocatalytic transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon‐based fuels or chemicals using sustainable solar energy is considered an ideal strategy for simultaneously alleviating the energy shortage and environmental crises. However, owing to the low energy utilization of sunlight and inferior catalytic activity, the conversion efficiency of CO2 photoreduction is far from satisfactory. In this study, a MOF‐derived hollow bimetallic oxide nanomaterial is prepared for the efficient photoreduction of CO2. First, a unique ZIF‐67‐on‐InOF‐1 heterostructure is successfully obtained by growing a secondary Co‐based ZIF‐67 onto the initial InOF‐1 nanorods. The corresponding hollow counterpart has a larger specific surface area after acid etching, and the oxidized bimetallic H‐Co3O4/In2O3 material exhibits abundant heterogeneous interfaces that expose more active sites. The energy band structure of H‐Co3O4/In2O3 corresponds well with the photosensitizer of [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2, which results in a high CO yield of 4828 ± 570 μmol h−1 g−1 and stable activity over a consecutive of six runs, demonstrating adequate photocatalytic performance. This study demonstrates that the rational design of MOF‐on‐MOF heterostructures can completely exploit the synergistic effects between different components, which may be extended to other MOF‐derived nanomaterials as promising catalysts for practical energy conversion and storage.
