Abstract:Benefit from technical advances in the Internet of Things, many social media applications relative to folksonomy have become ubiquitous. The size and complexity of folksonomy-based systems can unfortunately lead to information overload and reduced utility for users. Consequentially, the increasing need for recommender services from users has arisen. Many efforts have been made to address recommendation accuracy as well as other issues with respect to personalized recommendation in such systems. A key challenge facing these systems is that the most useful individual recommendations are to be found among diverse niche resources while increasing diversity most often compromises accuracy. In this paper, we introduce a simple yet elegant method—Diversity-aware Personalized PageRank (DaPPR)—to address this challenge from the aggregate perspective. DaPPR exploits a balance factor to adjust the influence of a personalized ranking vector and a unified non-personalized ranking vector based on PageRank. By this, it can reduce the impact of resource popularity on recommendations and then generate more diverse and novel recommendations to users. A hybrid DaPPR model that combines two ranking processes on the user–resource and the resource–tag bipartite graphs is specifically designed to meet the requirements in folksonomy-based systems. According to solid experiments, our proposed method yields better results balancing both aggregate accuracy and aggregate diversity (novelty). Improvements of all performance metrics are also obtained compared with the existing algorithms.

Abstract:Social networking sites like Flickr , Youtube and Del.icio.us have been rapidly gaining popularity on the Internet, underscoring a transformation of the Web to a participatory medium in which users are actively creating, evaluating and distributing information. With this process, social tagging systems, which allow users to interactively annotate a pool of shared resources using descriptive tags, have enjoyed phenomenal success in recent years. Folksonomy are data created in social tagging. Tags in folksonomy reflect userspsila collaborative cognition on information. They can reveal both the userspsila behavior and resourcespsila properties. In this paper, we will study the vocabulary of userspsila tagging and the relationship between words. We connect tags by users collaborative tagging to form a network of folksonomy, and investigate the semantic relatedness between tags within it. The result shows that the links within this network have relatively strong semantic relatedness, which is useful for designing future folksonomy-based systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduced a new approach of measure the semantic relatedness between terms. The approach utilized the folksonomy data from social tagging, so it had advantages like evolution with social cognition. We built a semantic relatedness measurement service - TagRelated! based on the folksonomy data from Delicious.com. Three applications were implemented with TagRelated! to demonstrate its usage and performance. Experiment and user feedback showed the method and service performing well.

Abstract:As one of the most successful recommendation techniques, collaborative filtering provides a useful recommendation by associating an active user with a crowd of users who share the same interests. Although some achievements have been achieved both in theory and practice, the efficiency of recommender systems has been negatively affected by the problems of cold start and data sparsity recently. To solve the above problems, the trust relationship among users is employed into recommender systems to build a learning model to further promote the prediction quality and users' satisfaction. However, most of the existing social networks-based recommendation algorithms fail to take into account the fact that users with different levels of trust and backgrounds, that is, user's social status and homophily have different degrees of influence on their friends. In this paper, a novel social matrix factorization-based recommendation method is proposed to improve the recommendation quality by fusing user's social status and homophily. User's social status and homophily play important roles in improving the performance of recommender systems. We first build a user's trust relationship network based on user social relationships and the rating information. Then, the degree of trust is calculated through the trust propagation method and the PageRank algorithm. Finally, the trust relationship is integrated into the matrix factorization model to accurately predict unknown ratings. The proposed method is evaluated using real-life datasets including the Epinions and Douban datasets. The experimental results and comparisons demonstrate that the proposed approach is superior to the existing social networks-based recommendation algorithms.

Abstract:Recently,the rapid growth of social networks has provided rich contents and yet a huge challenge for recommender systems.To better uncover its underlying role in information filtering, a hybrid algorithm was proposed based on the integrated effect of social media and social networks. The social interests(so-called tags)from social media were extracted by natural language process technology;the social influence was measured based on social network analysis;and a tunable parameter to integrate those two effects was adopted to provide recommendation results.Numerical results on a real-world dataset,Newzan ,show that the presented model outperforms the classical user-based collaborative filtering algorithm in various metrics,including AUC (area under the curve),precision,recall,diversity and novelty.Furthermore,the case studies on three typical users from Newzan were performed .Statistical analyses show that the optimal recommendation parameter should vary from user to user according to the degree of their social involvement .The results can provide an in-depth understanding for unifying social media to develop social applications.

Abstract:The past few years have witnessed the great success of a new family of paradigms, social tagging networks, which allows users to freely associate social tags to items and efficiently manage them. Thus it provides us a promising way to effectively find useful and interesting information. In this paper, we consider two typical roles of social tags: (i) an accessorial tool helping users organize items; (ii) a bridge that connects users and items. We then propose a hybrid algorithm to integrate the two different roles to obtain better recommendation performance. Experimental results on a real-world data set, Del.icio.us, shows that it can significantly enhance both the algorithmic accuracy and diversity.

Abstract:Social bookmarking tools become more and more popular nowadays and tagging is used to organize information and allow users to recall or search the resources. Users need to type the tags whenever they post a resource, so that a good tag recommendation system can ease the process of finding some useful and relevant keywords for users. Researchers have made lots of relevant work for tag recommendation systems, but those traditional collaborative systems may not perform well in the case of a new user and a new resource. To address this problem, we propose a tag recommendation system for two different cases. The first case is that the active user or active resource is a new one which has not appeared in the past while the second case is that the active user and resource has already been posted. In this paper, we present two different methods for these two cases: a content-based method and a graph-based method. We implement our tag recommendation system in a realworld academic Folksonomy system. In order to gain better results,we apply improvements and combinations of previous work in each of these two methods.and combinations of previous work in each of these two methods. We participated into the Discovery Challenge 2009 with the proposed methods. The results of our teams are within the top teams.

Abstract:Recommender systems have developed rapidly and successfully. The system aims to help users find relevant items from a potentially overwhelming set of choices. However, most of the existing recommender algorithms focused on the traditional user-item similarity computation, other than incorporating the social interests into the recommender systems. As we know, each user has their own preference field, they may influence their friends' preference in their expert field when considering the social interest on their friends' item collecting. In order to model this social interest, in this paper, we proposed a simple method to compute users' social interest on the specific items in the recommender systems, and then integrate this social interest with similarity preference. The experimental results on two real-world datasets Epinions and Friendfeed show that this method can significantly improve not only the algorithmic precision-accuracy but also the diversity-accuracy.

Abstract:Recommender systems are designed to help users quickly access large volumes of information according to their profiles. Most previous works in recommender systems have put their emphasis on the accuracy of finding the most similar items according to a user's profile, while often ignoring other aspects that may affect users' experiences in practice, e.g., the novelty and diversity issues within a recommendation list. In this paper, we focus on utilizing taxonomic knowledge extracted from an online encyclopedia to boost a content-based personalized news recommender system without much human involvement. Given a recommendation list, we improve a user's satisfaction by introducing the taxonomy based novelty and diversity metrics to include novel, but potentially related items into the list, and filter out redundant ones. The experimental results show that the coarse grained knowledge resources can help a content-based news recommender system provides accurate as well as user-oriented recommendations.

Abstract:The advent of Internet and World Wide Web has led to unprecedent growth of the information available. People usually face the information overload by following a limited number of sources which best fit their interests. It has thus become important to address issues like who gets followed and how to allow people to discover new and better information sources. In this paper we conduct an empirical analysis on different on-line social networking sites, and draw inspiration from its results to present different source selection strategies in an adaptive model for social recommendation. We show that local search rules which enhance the typical topological features of real social communities give rise to network configurations that are globally optimal. These rules create networks which are effective in information diffusion and resemble structures resulting from real social systems.

Social Recommender Systems Based on Coupling Network Structure Analysis

Abstract:The past few years has witnessed the great success of recommender systems, which can significantly help users find relevant and interesting items for them in the information era. However, a vast class of researches in this area mainly focus on predicting missing links in bipartite user-item networks (represented as behavioral networks). Comparatively, the social impact, especially the network structure based properties, is relatively lack of study. In this paper, we firstly obtain five corresponding network-based features, including user activity, average neighbors' degree, clustering coefficient, assortative coefficient and discrimination, from social and behavioral networks, respectively. A hybrid algorithm is proposed to integrate those features from two respective networks. Subsequently, we employ a machine learning process to use those features to provide recommendation results in a binary classifier method. Experimental results on a real dataset, Flixster, suggest that the proposed method can significantly enhance the algorithmic accuracy. In addition, as network-based properties consider not only the social activities, but also take into account user preferences in the behavioral networks, therefore, it performs much better than that from either social or behavioral networks. Furthermore, since the features based on the behavioral network contain more diverse and meaningfully structural information, they play a vital role in uncovering users' potential preference, which, might show light in deeply understanding the structure and function of the social and behavioral networks.

Abstract:Recently, social tagging systems have been widely applied in web systems and some physical properties have been found applications in efficiently and effectively personalized recommendation. Social tags can provide highly abstract information about not only item contents but also personalized preferences, hence they might help generate better personalized recommendations. However, how to find out the relevant yet diverse items that are not associated with any tag remains an open question for us. In this paper, we assume a basic attraction may exist for each item. Moreover, considering both personal and global vocabulary, as well as such attractor, we apply diffusion-based recommendation algorithm in weighted social tagging networks. We then evaluate it in a real-world data set Del.icio.us. Experimental results demonstrate that the usage of both tag information and attractor can significantly improve diversity of personalized recommendations, and thus it can be regarded as an alternative recommendation method.

Abstract:In the digital age, personalized recommendation systems have become crucial for information dissemination and user experience. While traditional systems focus on accuracy, they often overlook diversity, novelty, and serendipity. This study introduces an innovative recommendation system model, Time-based Outlier Aware Recommender (TOAR), designed to address the challenges of content homogenization and information bubbles in personalized recommendations. TOAR integrates Neural Matrix Factorization (NeuMF), Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Networks (Bi-LSTM), and Mean Shift clustering to enhance recommendation accuracy, novelty, and diversity. The model analyzes temporal dynamics of user behavior and facilitates cross-domain knowledge exchange through feature sharing and transfer learning mechanisms. By incorporating an attention mechanism and unsupervised clustering, TOAR effectively captures important time-series information and ensures recommendation diversity. Experimental results on a news recommendation dataset demonstrate TOAR's superior performance across multiple metrics, including AUC, precision, NDCG, and novelty, compared to traditional and deep learning-based recommendation models. This research provides a foundation for developing more intelligent and personalized recommendation services that balance accuracy with content diversity.

Abstract:With the rapid development of recommender systems, accuracy is no longer the only golden criterion for evaluating whether the recommendation results are satisfying or not. In recent years, diversity has gained tremendous attention in recommender systems research, which has been recognized to be an important factor for improving user satisfaction. On the one hand, diversified recommendation helps increase the chance of answering ephemeral user needs. On the other hand, diversifying recommendation results can help the business improve product visibility and explore potential user interests. In this paper, we are going to review the recent advances in diversified recommendation. Specifically, we first review the various definitions of diversity and generate a taxonomy to shed light on how diversity have been modeled or measured in recommender systems. After that, we summarize the major optimization approaches to diversified recommendation from a taxonomic view. Last but not the least, we project into the future and point out trending research directions on this topic.

Abstract:Recommender systems are becoming increasingly important and prevalent because of the ability of solving information overload. In recent years, researchers are paying increasing attention to aggregate diversity as a key metric beyond accuracy, because improving aggregate recommendation diversity may increase long tails and sales diversity. Trust is often used to improve recommendation accuracy. However, how to utilize trust to improve aggregate recommendation diversity is unexplored. In this paper, we focus on solving this problem and propose a novel trust-aware recommendation method by incorporating time factor into similarity computation. The rationale underlying the proposed method is that, trustees with later creation time of trust relation can bring more diverse items to recommend to their trustors than other trustees with earlier creation time of trust relation. Through relevant experiments on publicly available dataset, we demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the baseline method in terms of aggregate diversity while maintaining almost the same recall.

Abstract:To solve traditional classification system's problems of coarse-grain classification and high costmaintenance,a Folksonomybased web service discovery model is proposed and its concrete realization method is deeply analyzed.The disadvantages of Folksonomy mechanism are analyzed,and a series of measures are taken according to that.The collaborative tagging system environment is simulated by programming,and a simulation experiment is conducted in it.Experimental results prove that the mechanism can realize more efficient web service classification retrieval,and the improvements applied to Folksonomy have positive impacts on both recall ratio and precision ratio.
A Resource Recommendation Method Based on User Taste Diffusion Model in Folksonomies

Abstract:Collaborative tagging has been very popular with the development of the Web 2.0, which helps users manage, share and utilize resources effectively. For various kinds of resources, the way to recommend appropriate resources to right users is the key problem in tagging system. This paper proposes a user taste diffusion model based on the tripartite hypergraph to deal with the tri-relation of user-resource-tag in folksonomies and the data sparsity problem in personalized recommendation. Through the defined tri-relation model and diffusion probability matrix, the user's taste is diffused from itself to other users, resources and tags. When diffusion stops, the candidate resources can be identified then be ranked according to the taste values. As a result the top resources that have not been collected by the given user are selected as the final recommendations. Benefiting from the introduction of iterative diffusion mechanism, the recommendation results not only cover the resources collected by the given user's direct neighbors but also cover the ones which are collected by his/her extended neighbors. Experimental results show that our method performs better in terms of precision and recall than other recommendation methods.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of users for personalized social services, social recommendation (SR) has been an important concern in academia. However, current research on SR universally faces two main challenges. On the one hand, SR lacks the considerable ability of robust online data management. On the other hand, SR fails to take the ambiguity of preference feedback into consideration. To bridge these gaps, a deep learning-embedded social Internet of Things (IoT) is proposed for ambiguity-aware SR (SIoT-SR). Specifically, a social IoT architecture is developed for social computing scenarios to guarantee reliable data management. A deep learning-based graph neural network model that can be embedded into the model is proposed as the core algorithm to perform ambiguity-aware SR. This design not only provides proper online data sensing and management but also overcomes the preference ambiguity problem in SR. To evaluate the performance of the proposed SIoT-SR, two real-world datasets are selected to establish experimental scenarios. The method is assessed using three different metrics, selecting five typical methods as benchmarks. The experimental results show that the proposed SIoT-SR performs better than the benchmark methods by at least 10% and has good robustness.

Abstract:The significant proliferation of research papers in both conferences and journals has made it difficult for researchers to easily access relevant scholarly papers for academic learning. This has been a substantial problem for many researchers. Conferences, in comparison with journals, have an aspect of social learning and networking, which leads to personal familiarisation through various interactions among researchers. In this paper, we improve the social awareness of conference participants by proposing a novel folksonomy-based paper recommendation algorithm, called socially aware recommendation of scholarly papers (SARSP). SARSP recommends papers issued by active participants (APs), to other Group Profile Participants at the same conference based on preference similarity of their research interests. In addition, SARSP computes the social ties between an AP and other conference participants to effectively generate social recommendations of scholarly papers. We evaluate our proposed algorithm using a real-world data-set. Our experimental results confirm that SARSP has significant improvement over other existing methods.
