Abstract:FeNiCu-based composite catalysis proves to be an effective strategy for enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Two catalysts, (Cu0.2Ni0.8) O/NiFe2O4 and FeNi3/Fe4Cu3, are successfully synthesized and doped into MgH2 to improve its hydrogen storage capability. Experimental results demonstrate that MgH2 + 5 wt % (Cu0.2Ni0.8)O/NiFe2O4 (MgH2 + 5 A) and MgH2 + 5 wt% FeNi3/Fe4Cu3 (MgH2 + 5B) composites desorption at 171 degrees C and 178 degrees C, respectively, which is 100 degrees C lower than that of ball-milled MgH2. Under conditions of 150 degrees C and 3 MPa, MgH2 + 5 A can absorb 6.02 wt% H2 in just one minute. MgH2 + 5B, at 225/325 degrees C, exhibits hydrogen absorption/desorption exceeding 7 wt% H2 for 1 h. The synergistic effect of in situ formed Mg2Ni and Fe positively impacts the hydrogen storage behavior of MgH2. The introduced interface offers numerous lowenergy barrier H-diffusion channels, resulting in accelerated release and hydrogen absorption. Additionally, Cu4O3 dispersed on the surface of the matrix particles maintains its valence during the process of hydrogen absorption/desorption. This property can facilitate the conversion of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 into a "hydrogen pump". This study provides an experimental basis and new insights for designing highly efficient catalysts for Mg-based hydrogen storage materials.
Excellent Synergistic Catalytic Mechanism of In-Situ Formed Nanosized Mg2Ni and Multiple Valence Titanium for Improved Hydrogen Desorption Properties of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:Nowadays, catalytic doping has been regarded as one of the most promising and effective methods to improve the sluggish kinetics of magnesium hydride (MgH2). Herein, we synthesized Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite with the particle sizes about 20 nm by an extremely facile solvothermal method. Then, the Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite was doped into MgH2 to enhance its reversible hydrogen storage properties. A remarkably enhancement of de/rehydrogenation kinetics of MgH2 can be achieved by doped with Ni/TiO2 nanocomposite, compared to that solely doped with Ni or TiO2 nanoparticles. The hydrogen desorption peak temperature of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 is 232 degrees C, which is 135.4 degrees C lower than that of ball-milled MgH2 (367.4 degrees C). Moreover, the MgH2-Ni/TiO2 can desorb 6.5 wt% H-2 within 7 min at 265 degrees C and absorb similar to 5 wt% H-2 within 10 min at 100 degrees C. In particular, the apparent activation energy of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 is obviously decreased from 160.5 kJ/mol (ball-milled MgH2) to 43.7 +/- 1.5 kJ/mol. Based on the analyses of microstructure evolution, it is proved that metallic Ni particles can react with Mg easily to form fine Mg2Ni particles after dehydrogenation, and the in-situ formed Mg2Ni will transform into Mg2NiH4 in the subsequent rehydrogenation process. The significantly improved hydrogen absorption/desorption properties of MgH2-Ni/TiO2 can be ascribed to the synergistic catalytic effect of reversible transformation of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 which act as "hydrogen pump", and the multiple valence titanium compounds (Ti4+/3+/2+) which promote the electrons transfer of MgH2/Mg. Abstract:The synthesis of trimesic acid-Ni/Fe based metal organic frameworks (TAM-Fe MOF and TAM-Ni MOF) at room temperature, followed by doping their derivatives into MgH 2 system via mechanical ball milling, has shown promising results in enhancing hydrogen storage performance. Both monometallic and bimetallic catalysts loaded with carbon have promoted the kinetics of the MgH 2 /Mg system, with the latter exhibiting superior catalytic performance. The composite MgH 2 + 10 wt% TM/C (TM = Fe, Ni) demonstrates an initial hydrogen desorption temperature of 194 °C and rapid absorption of 6.2 wt% H 2 within 60 s at 150 °C, along with absorbing 5.7 wt% H 2 within 1 h at 100 °C. Complete hydrogen desorption occurs at 300 °C, with an activation energy (E α ) for hydrogen desorption process is 77.3 kJ mol −1 . Mechanistic studies reveal that in-situ generated Fe, Mg 2 Ni, and Mg 2 NiH 4 are the actual catalytic active substances, exhibiting synergistic effects and providing more active sites, with Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 acting as a "hydrogen pump". Additionally, the carbon loaded transition metal particles facilitate hydrogen diffusion and inhibit the aggregation of MgH 2 /Mg particles, making this approach cost-effective and viable for hydrogen storage catalysis applications.

Abstract:A novel catalyst-MOFs derived Ni nanoparticles dispersed on exfoliated monolayered MXene functional carrier was prepared and introduced into MgH2 in this work. Striking improvements in hydrogen storage properties were achieved for MgH2 when the catalyst was added. Concisely, the hydrogen releasing peak temperature of the MgH2 + 10 wt% Ni@C-MXene is 241.1 degrees C, about 120.2 degrees C lower than that of the additive-free MgH2. According to Kissinger method, the dehydrogenation activation energy of the MgH2 + 10 wt% Ni@C-MXene composite is calculated to be 54.79 kJ mol 1, over 60% lower when compared with the pristine MgH2 (145.08 kJ mol(-1)). At 300 degrees C, the MgH2 + 10 wt% Ni@C-MXene composite releases about 5.6 wt% hydrogen within 2 min, while only 2 wt% hydrogen is desorbed even the dehydriding time prolongs to 60 min for the pure MgH2. In addition, the completely dehydrogenated MgH2 + 10 wt% Ni@C-MXene exhibits eminent hydrogen absorption performance, with approximate 5 wt% hydrogen uptaken within 2 min under 3.2 MPa hydrogen pressure at 150 degrees C. Moreover, an excellent hydrogen cycling stability is achieved in the MgH2 + 10 wt% Ni@C-MXene without decay for both capacity and kinetics after 10 cycles. Beside the regular XRD, XPS and TEM techniques to clarify the evolution of Ni and Ti during hydrogen de/absorption cycling, more importantly we performed the first principle based calculations to reveal how the in-situ formed Ti-0 would affect the Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 mutual transformation. Apart from the nano confinement effect of MXene for Ni/Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4, the in-situ formed Ti-0 from MXene also favors the "hydrogen pump" effect of Mg2NiH4 due to the decreased formation energy Ef under the assistance of Ti0. Through such a synergistic "nano-confinement and facilitated hydrogen pump" effect, the hydrogen de-/ absorption kinetics of MgH2 is significantly accelerated.
Achieving superior hydrogen storage properties of MgH<sub>2</sub> by the effect of TiFe and carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Multiple catalysts have exhibited high activity on improving the hydrogen storage performance of magnesium hydride. Herein, TiFe as a superior catalyst was successfully prepared, and then doped into MgH2 via ball milling to improve the de/rehydrogenation properties of MgH2 at low temperatures. Compared with as-prepared MgH2, the onset desorption temperature could be reduced to 175 degrees C after adding 15 wt%-TiFe to MgH2. Furthermore, the 10 wt%-TiFe doped MgH2 released approximately 6.5 wt% H2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C, and 5.3 wt% H2 could be rapidly absorbed at low temperature of 125 degrees C under hydrogen pressure of 3 MPa. Moreover, the additional doping of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) evenly distributed on the surface of MgH2 particles, enabling the MgH2 + 10 wt%-TiFe + 5 wt%-CNTs composite with outstanding cycling performance. The activation energy of hydrogenation for MgH2 was reduced from 72.5 +/- 2.7 kJ/mol to 60.7 +/- 8.0 kJ/mol after doping with TiFe and CNTs. However, the addition of TiFe and CNTs had limited influence on the thermodynamic properties of MgH2. The analysis of XRD, TEM, SEM and EDS indicated that uniformly distributed TiFe and CNTs served as active catalytic unit and aggregation preventer on enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2, respectively.
MOFs Derived Ni-Mn Bimetal Nano-Catalysts with Enhanced Hydrogen Pump Effect for Boosting Hydrogen Sorption Performance of MgH2

Abstract:In the present work, highly effective Ni-MnO binary nanocomposite catalysts were designed and synthesized using a one-pot method from Ni-Mn based bi-metal organic frameworks (MOFs). These nanocomposites were introduced into MgH2 through ball milling as catalysts to enhance the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. Through varying the Ni/Mn ratio in the bimetal MOFs, it is found that the Ni1Mn1−MOF derived catalyst showed the best promotion effect on MgH2. The MgH2–10 wt.% Ni1Mn1−MOF derivative demonstrated favorable overall performance with the low desorption peak temperature (218.2 °C) with a saturated hydrogen capacity of 6.42 wt.% and rapid hydrogen release/uptake kinetics. It can still reabsorb about 1.15 wt.% H2 within 30 min at a temperature as low as 50 °C. Both performance tests (DSC and TPD) and structural characterizations (XRD, HRTEM, etc.) revealed that the synergistic role of in situ formed Mg6MnO8 and Mg2NiH4/Mg2Ni phases for improving the hydrogen sorption properties of MgH2. Theoretical calculations reveal that Mg6MnO8 destabilizes metal-H bonds in MgH2 and Mg2NiH4, leading to an enhanced “hydrogen pump” effect of Mg2NiH4 for MgH2. This research provides a strategy to rational design and preparation of bimetal MOF derivatives for the development of advanced hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered as a promising hydrogen storage material for buildings that are powered by hydrogen energy, but its practical application is hampered by poor kinetics and unstable thermodynamics. Herein, we describe a feasible method for preparing FeNi nanoparticles dispersed on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (FeNi/rGO), and we confirmed that excellent catalytic effects increased the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. 5 wt% FeNi/rGO-modified MgH2 began to release hydrogen at 230 °C and liberated 6.5 wt% H2 within 10 min at 300 °C. As for the hydrogenation process, the dehydrogenated sample absorbed 5.4 wt% H2 within 20 min at 125 °C under a hydrogen pressure of 32 bar. More importantly, a hydrogen capacity of 6.9 wt% was maintained after 50 cycles without compromising the kinetics during each cycle. A unique catalytic mechanism promoted synergetic effects between the in situ-formed Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4, Fe, and rGO that efficiently promoted hydrogen dissociation and diffusion along the Mg/MgH2 interface, anchored the catalyst, and prevented MgH2 from aggregation and growth.
Facile Synthesized Fe Nanosheets As Superior Active Catalyst for Hydrogen Storage in MgH2

Abstract:Reversible hydrogen storage in MgH2 under mild conditions is a promising way for the realization of "Hydrogen Economy", in which the development of cheap and highly efficient catalysts is the major challenge. Herein, A two-dimensional layered Fe is prepared via a facile wet-chemical ball milling method and has been confirmed to greatly enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Minor addition of 5 wt% Fe nanosheets to MgH2 decreases the onset desorption temperature to 182.1 degrees C and enables a quick release of 5.44 wt% H-2 within 10 min at 300 degrees C. Besides, the dehydrogenated sample takes up 6 wt% H-2 in 10 min under a hydrogen pressure of 3.2 MPa at 200 degrees C. With the doping of Fe nano sheets, the apparent activation energy of the dehydrogenation reaction for MgH2 is reduced to 40.7 +/- 1.0 kJ mol(-1). Further ab initio calculations reveal that the presence of Fe extends the Mg-H bond length and reduces its bond strength. We believe that this work would shed light on designing plain metal for catalysis in the area of hydrogen storage and other energy-related issues. (C) 2019 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Synergistic Catalysis in Monodispersed Transition Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Anchored on Amorphous Carbon for Excellent Low-Temperature Dehydrogenation of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) has been considered to be one of the most promising solid-state hydrogen storage materials owing to its high hydrogen capacities, excellent reversibility and abundant source. However, the high dehydrogenation energy barrier and poor kinetics embarrass the practical application of MgH2 in fuel cell. Doping nano-catalyst is deemed to be the most effective method to improve kinetics property of hydrogen storage materials, but the nanoparticles generally suffer from agglomeration and inactivation during the cycling hydrogen storage. Here we present a promising strategy to facilely prepare a high-efficiency transition metal oxide nano-catalyst, TiO2 nanoparticles, in which monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles are wrapped with amorphous carbon. The in-situ synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst exhibit superior catalytic effect on the dehydrogenation properties of MgH2. A significant reductions of hydrogen desorption temperature (163.5 degrees C) and activation energy (69.2 kJ mol(-1)) have been obtained for the TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyzed MgH2, which can be fully rehydrogenated with a reversible capacity of about 6.5 wt% at 200 degrees C within 5 min, and then completely dehydrogenated at 275 degrees C within 10 min. It is demonstrated that such significantly improved hydrogen desorption properties can be attributed to the in-situ formation of TiO2 nanoparticles, amorphous carbon and multi-valance Ti species, which play the synergistically catalytic roles in the nano-catalyst. In particular, the presence of amorphous carbon in the catalyst can not only prevent the aggregation and growth of catalyst nanoparticles, but also dramatically reduce the desorption energy value of H in MgH2, according to the density functional theory calculation. This finding opens a new venue for the synthesis of monodispersed single-crystal-like TiO2 nanoparticles/amorphous carbon catalyst with high-activity, safety, low cost, and its practical application in MgH2 and other hydrogen storage systems. Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) is an important material for hydrogen (H2) storage and transportation owing to its high capacity and reversibility. However, its intrinsic properties have considerably limited its industrial application. In this study, the NiFe-800 catalyst as metal-organic framework (MOF) derivative was first utilized to promote the intrinsic properties of MgH2. Compared to pure MgH2, which releases 1.24 wt% H2 in 60 min at 275 degrees C, the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite releases 5.85 wt% H2 in the same time. Even at a lower temperature of 250 degrees C, the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite releases 3.57 wt% H2, surpassing the performance of pure MgH2 at 275 degrees C. Correspondingly, while pure MgH2 absorbs 2.08 wt% H2 in 60 min at 125 degrees C, the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite absorbs 5.35 wt% H2 in just 1 min. Remarkably, the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite absorbs 2.27 wt% H2 in 60 min at 50 degrees C and 4.64 wt% H2 at 75 degrees C. This indicates that MgH2-10 NiFe-800 exhibits optimum performance with excellent kinetics at low temperatures. Furthermore, the capacity of the MgH2-10 NiFe-800 composite remains largely stable after 10 cycles. Moreover, the Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 acts as a "hydrogen pump", providing effective diffusion channels that enhance the kinetic process of the composite during cycling. Additionally, Fe0 facilitates electron transfer and creates hydrogen diffusion channels and catalytic sites. Finally, carbon (C) effectively prevents particle agglomeration and maintains the cyclic stability of the composites. Consequently, the synergistic effects of Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4, Fe0, and C considerably improve the kinetic properties and cycling stability of MgH2. This work offers an effective and valuable approach to improving the hydrogen storage efficiency in the commercial application of MgH2. Efficient Catalysis of FeNiCu-based Multi-Site Alloys on Magnesium-Hydride for Solid-State Hydrogen Storage

Abstract:Hydrogen, as a cheap, clean, and cost-effective secondary energy source, performs an essential role in optimizing today's energy structure. Magnesium hydride (MgH2 ) represents an attractive hydrogen carrier for storage and transportation, however, the kinetic behavior and operating temperature remain undesirable. In this work, a dual-phase multi-site alloy (MsA) anchored on carbon substrates was designed, and its superior catalytic effects on the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 were reported. Mechanism analysis identified that multi-site FeNi3 /NiCu nanoalloys synergistically served as intrinsic drivers for the striking de/hydrogenation performance of the MgH2 -MsA systems. Concretely, the unique multi-metallic site structure attached to the surface of MgH2 provided substantial reversible channels and accessible active sites conducive to the adsorption, activation, and nucleation of H atoms. In addition, the coupling system formed by FeNi3 and NiCu dual-phase alloys further enhanced the reactivity between Mg/MgH2 and H atoms. Hence, the onset dehydrogenation temperature of MgH2 + 5 wt% MsA was reduced to 195 degrees C and the hydrogen desorption apparent activation energy was reduced to 83.6 kJ/mol. 5.08 wt% H2 could be released at 250 degrees C in 20 min, reaching a high dehydrogenation rate of 0.254 wt% H2 /min, yet that for MgH2 at a higher temperature of 335 degrees C was only 0.145 wt% H2 /min. Then, the dehydrogenated MgH2 -MsA sample could absorb hydrogen from room temperature (30 degrees C) and charge 3.93 wt% H2 at 100 degrees C within 20 min under 3.0 MPa H2 pressure. Benefiting from carbon substrates, the 5 wt% MsA doped-MgH2 could still maintain 6.36 wt% hydrogen capacity after 20 cycles. In conclusion, this work provides experimental rationale and new insights for the design of efficient catalysts for magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage materials. Highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles decorated TiO 2 microspheres for enhancing hydrogen storage properties of magnesium hydride

Abstract:While magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is widely acknowledged as an encouraging solid-state hydrogen storage material, its practical utility is hampered by the elevated operating temperatures and sluggish kinetic characteristics. To address these limitations, a composite catalyst consisting of Ni nanoparticles (NPs) deposited onto TiO 2 microspheres (Ni/TiO 2 -MS) was developed and employed as a catalytic agent to enhance the hydrogen desorption and absorption properties of MgH 2 . Remarkably, the introduction of Ni/TiO 2 -MS resulted in a significant reduction of the initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 to 181.4 °C, demonstrating a decrease of 78.2 °C compared to ball-milled MgH 2 (BM-MgH 2 ). The optimal BM-MgH 2 -Ni/TiO 2 -MS facilitated the desorption of 6.3 wt% of hydrogen within 5 minutes at 300 °C, while at 150 °C, its dehydrogenated product could absorb 5.4 wt% of hydrogen in only 1 minute. Moreover, the BM-MgH 2 -Ni/TiO 2 -MS sample exhibited remarkable cycling stability over 20 cycles. Through the mechanistic analysis, the simultaneous presence of in-situ formation of Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 and multivalent titanium species engendered a synergistically catalytic effect, significantly enhancing the hydrogen storage capabilities of MgH 2 . This study affords a very potential strategy for the design of active catalysts aimed at enhancing the hydrogen dehydrogenation/absorption kinetics of MgH 2 .

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is considered one of the most ideal materials for hydrogen storage. However, the practical applications of MgH 2 are greatly hindered by its high operating temperature and poor hydrogen storage kinetics. In the present work, carbon–nitrogen nanosheets co-doped with disk-like nickel and titanium dioxide nanoparticles ((Ni, TiO 2 )CN) were prepared using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors to improve the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . The as-synthesized ((Ni, TiO 2 )CN)-doped MgH 2 system manifested excellent hydrogen storage properties at low temperatures and could absorb 5.08 wt% of hydrogen in 100 min at 40 °C and 6.17 wt% of hydrogen in 10 min at 125 °C. The dehydrogenation activation energy of the ((Ni, TiO 2 )CN)-doped MgH 2 system was obtained as 83.1 kJ∙mol −1 , which was considerably lower than that of pure MgH 2 . The mechanism analysis revealed that Ni reacted with Mg to form Mg 2 Ni coating around Mg, the in situ Mg 2 Ni and its hydride (Mg 2 NiH 4 ) acted as a "hydrogen pump" to drive hydrogen diffusion and dissociation. And the mutual reversible change in polyvalent Ti ions could promote the transfer of charge, which was conducive to accelerating the formation of Mg/MgH 2 . Additionally, stable CN layers not only could inhibit the fragmentation and agglomeration of MgH 2 particles, but also could make the active substance dispersed more evenly; thus, the cycle stability and hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics of MgH 2 was greatly enhanced under the synergistic catalysis of in situ formed Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 , polyvalent titanium, and N-C nanosheets. The findings of this work could provide a new strategy to improve the properties of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:In this work, we report the remarkable catalytic effects of a novel Ti3C2 MXene-based catalyst (Ni@Ti-MX), which was prepared via self-assembling of Ni nanoparticles onto the surface of exfoliated Ti3C2 nanosheets. The resultant Ni@Ti-MX catalyst, characterized by ultradispersed Ni nanoparticles being anchored on the monolayer Ti3C2 flakes, was introduced into MgH2 through ball milling. In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed that a synergetic catalytic effect of multiphase components (Mg2Ni, TiO2, metallic Ti, etc.) derived in the MgH2 + Ni@Ti-MX composite exhibits remarkable improvements in the hydrogen sorption kinetics of MgH2. In particular, the MgH2 + Ni@Ti-MX composite can absorb 5.4 wt % H-2 in 25 s at 125 degrees C and release 5.2 wt % H-2 in 15 min at 250 degrees C. Interestingly, it can uptake 4 wt % H-2 in 5 h even at room temperature. Furthermore, the dehydrogenation peak temperature of the MgH2 + Ni@Ti-MX composite is about 221 degrees C, which is 50 and 122 degrees C lower than that of MgH2 + Ti-MX and MgH2, respectively. The excellent hydrogen sorption properties of the MgH2 + Ni@Ti-MX composite are primarily attributed to the peculiar core-shell nanostructured MgH2@Mg2NiH4 hybrid materials and the interfacial coupling effects from different catalyst-matrix interfaces. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that using self-assembling of transition-metal elements on two-dimensional (2D) materials as a catalyst is a promising approach to enhance the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2.
In situ formation of multiple catalysts for enhancing the hydrogen storage of MgH2 by adding porous Ni3ZnC0.7/Ni loaded carbon nanotubes microspheres

Abstract:MgH2 is considered one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials because of its safety, high efficiency, high hydrogen storage quantity and low cost characteristics. But some shortcomings are still existed: high operating temperature and poor hydrogen absorption dynamics, which limit its application. Porous Ni3ZnC0.7/Ni loaded carbon nanotubes microspheres (NZC/Ni@CNT) is prepared by facile filtration and calcination method. Then the different amount of NZC/Ni@CNT (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 wt%) is added to the MgH2 by ball milling. Among the three samples with different amount of NZC/Ni@CNT (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 wt%), the MgH2-5 wt% NZC/Ni@CNT composite exhibits the best hydrogen storage performances. After testing, the MgH2-5 wt% NZC/Ni@CNT begins to release hydrogen at around 110 °C and hydrogen absorption capacity reaches 2.34 wt% H2 at 80 °C within 60 min. Moreover, the composite can release about 5.36 wt% H2 at 300 °C. In addition, hydrogen absorption and desorption activation energies of the MgH2-5 wt% NZC/Ni@CNT composite are reduced to 37.28 and 84.22 KJ/mol H2, respectively. The in situ generated Mg2NiH4/Mg2Ni can serve as a "hydrogen pump" that plays the main role in providing more activation sites and hydrogen diffusion channels which promotes H2 dissociation during hydrogen absorption process. In addition, the evenly dispersed Zn and MgZn2 in Mg and MgH2 could provide sites for Mg/MgH2 nucleation and hydrogen diffusion channel. This attempt clearly proved that the bimetallic carbide Ni3ZnC0.7 is a effective additive for the hydrogen storage performances modification of MgH2, and the facile synthesis of the Ni3ZnC0.7/Ni@CNT can provide directions of better designing high performance carbide catalysts for improving MgH2.

Superior Catalytic Effect of Nickel Ferrite Nanoparticles in Improving Hydrogen Storage Properties of Mgh2

Abstract:The catalysis of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles on the hydrogen storage performances of magnesium hydride synthesized by high-energy ball milling was studied for the first time. The H-2 storage performances and catalytic mechanism were studied by pressurecompositiontemperature (PCT), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nonisothermal dehydrogenation results display that the initial dehydrogenation temperature of 7 mol % NiFe2O4-doped MgH2 is 191 degrees C, which is 250 degrees C lower than that of pristine MgH2. The desorption kinetics displays that the MgH2+7 mol % NiFe2O4 sample could desorb 3.79 wt % H-2 within 1 h at 300 degrees C under H-2 pressure of 0.1 MPa. The absorption kinetics displays that the MgH2+7 mol % NiFe2O4 sample could absorb 2.06 wt % H-2 within 3 h near room temperature under H-2 pressure of 4 MPa. The desorption activation energy of the MgH2+7 mol % NiFe2O4 sample is 59.6 kJ/mol, decreasing 195.3 kJ/mol as compared with pristine magnesium hydride. The reaction enthalpy and entropy of the MgH2+7 mol % NiFe2O4 sample during the dehydrogenation process are improved. The enhancement in the H-2 storage performances of MgH2 by adding NiFe2O4 nanoparticles is primarily ascribed to intermetallic Fe7Ni3 and (Fe,Ni) phases during the desorption procedure, which act as the real catalyzer in the 7 mol % NiFe2O4-doped sample.

Abstract:In this work, one-dimensional NiMoO4 and CoMoO4 nanorods are prepared and introduced into MgH2 to improve its hydrogen storage properties. It is observed that the MgH2–NiMoO4 system exhibits lower dehydrogenation temperature and faster kinetics than the MgH2–CoMoO4 system and pure MgH2, indicating the superior promoting effect of NiMoO4 over CoMoO4. Concretely, NiMoO4 reacts with MgH2 during the first dehydrogenation to in situ form Mg2Ni and Mo0, both of which are crucial factors for the following hydrogen cycling process. The ‘Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4’ mutual transformation upon hydrogen release/uptake is the well-known ‘hydrogen pump’ effect which boosts the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2. Moreover, theoretical calculations reveal the dual roles of Mo0 played for the hydrogen storage in MgH2: i) it accelerates the hydrogen de/absorption of MgH2 through weakening the Mg–H bonding; ii) it facilitates the mutual ‘Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4’ transformation as the formation energy of Mg2NiH4 decreases under the influence of Mo0, which we call ‘facilitated hydrogen pump’ effect in this work. Ascribing to the collaborative action between Ni- and Mo- containing species, the hydrogen storage kinetics of MgH2 has been accelerated.

Abstract:Magnesium hydride (MgH2) holds promise as a hydrogen storage material, but its practical application is impeded by high desorption temperatures and slow kinetics, presenting substantial challenges. Herein, an efficient approach is proposed to synthesize Mo2C@C nanosheets-supported Ni nanoparticles (Ni/Mo2C@C-2) materials, which can operate as a highly efficient catalyst to enhance hydrogen desorption of MgH2. The ballmilled MgH2-7.5 wt% Ni/Mo2C@C-2 demonstrates prominent hydrogen desorption kinetics with an activation energy (Ea) of 97.22 kJ mol- 1, alongside remarkable cycling stability, maintaining a capacity retention of 97.8% after 20 cycles. Consequently, the results reveal that the improvement of hydrogen storage properties for MgH2 can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the in-situ generated Mg2NiH4 with highly dispersion, the sustained Mo2C nanosheets, and highly graphitized carbon. This work provides a reliable strategy for constructing polyoxometalates derivatives to facilitate the hydrogen desorption and cycling of MgH2.
Synergistic Catalytic Activity of Porous Rod-like TMTiO3 (TM = Ni and Co) for Reversible Hydrogen Storage of Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:MgH2 contains a high content of 7.6 wt % H-2. However, its poor kinetics and high thermodynamic stability exhibit unacceptably low energy efficiency. Catalyst doping is deemed as one of the most effective strategies to improve its kinetic performance. In this work, porous rod-like TMTiO3 (TM = Ni and Co) samples are designed and introduced into an MgH2 system for the first time. TMTiO3 exhibits a high catalytic effect on the hydrogen desorption performance of MgH2. In particular, MgH2-6% NiTiO3 possesses excellent catalytic efficiency with a relatively low dehydrogenation temperature (235 degrees C) and fast dehydrogenation rate (similar to 0.1842 wt %/min at 235 degrees C), and the sample exhibits wonderful cycling stability with respect to both capacity (6.4 wt %) and kinetics (similar to 0.64 wt %/min at 300 degrees C). Mechanistic research shows that the in situ-formed Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 phases are regarded as catalytically active species, which work as a "Hydrogen Pump" and make the hydrogen release easier. Meanwhile, the interconversion within multivalent titanium (Ti4+, Ti3+, and Ti2+) that acts as a carrier for electron transformation leads to easy H formation from H-. The synergetic catalytic effects between Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 and multivalent titanium result in favorable and lasting catalytic efficiency for the enhanced hydrogen desorption properties of the MgH2 system.
