Abstract:In view of the complex underwater acoustic channel in underwater acoustic communication system ,the paper proposed a new synchronized method to against extended frequency. The method makes full use of HFM (Hyperbolic Frequency Modulation, HFM) and doppler tolerance characteristics and constructs a special combination of HFM signals, so as to achieve rapid and precise time synchronization. Based on the sea channel data analysis, this method which compared with the traditional synchronization methods has a lower synchronous error and lower computational complexity and faster synchronous rate. The experimental results based on DSPs demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness.
An Improved Cdma-Based Mac Protocol For Underwater Acoustic Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:The properties of underwater acoustic channel are quite different from those of terrestrial wireless sensor networks, which brings many challenges to design an efficient media access control (MAC) protocol for underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs). In order to overcome the long propagation delay and the funneling effect of UWASNs, a MAC protocol, named path-oriented code assignment (POCA) CDMA MAC (POCA-CDMA-MAC) protocol, is proposed in the paper. In the proposed protocol, a round-robin method and the CDMA technology are used to make the sink receive packets from multiple neighbors at the same time. Unlike other CDMA-based protocols using the transmitter-oriented code assignment (TOCA) or the receiver-oriented code assignment (ROCA), the POCA is used in the CDMA technology. Since the number of the path is much less than the number of nodes, the length of the spreading code used in systems with POCA is greatly shorter than those of the spreading code used in systems with TOCA or ROCA. Simulation results show that compared to existing MAC protocols for UWASNs, the proposed MAC protocol achieves a higher throughput, and a lower end-to-end delay.
Funneling Media Access Control (MAC) Protocol for Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks

Abstract:Due to the characteristics of the underwater acoustic channel, such as long propagation delay and low available bandwidth, the media access control (MAC) protocol designed for underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs) is quite different from that for terrestrial wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a MAC protocol for the UWASNs, named the funneling MAC (FMAC-U), which is a contention-based MAC protocol with a three-way handshake. The FMAC-U protocol uses an improved three-way handshake mechanism and code division multiple access (CDMA) based technology for request-to-send (RTS) signals transmitting to the sink in order that the sink can receive packets from multiple neighbors in a fixed order during each round of handshakes. The mechanism reduces the packet collisions and alleviates the funneling effect, especially alleviating the choke point of the UWASNs. Simulation results show that the proposed FMAC-U protocol achieves higher throughput, smaller packet drop ratio, lower end-to-end delay, and lower overhead of the control packet compared to the existing MAC protocols for UWASNs.

Abstract:Distributed underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) are envisioned in real-time ocean current velocity estimation. However, UASNs at present are still dominated by post-processing partially due to the complexity of on-line detection for travel times and lack of dedicated medium access control (MAC) protocols. In this study, we propose a dedicated MAC protocol package for real-time ocean current velocity estimation using distributed UASNs. First, we introduce the process and requirements of ocean current velocity estimation. Then, we present a series of spatial reuse time division multiple access (TDMA) protocols for each phase of real-time ocean current field estimation using distributed UASNs, followed by numerical analysis. We divide UASNs into two categories according to their computing ability: feature-complete and feature-incomplete systems. The feature-complete systems that have abundant computing ability carry out the presented MAC protocol package in three phases, whereas the feature-incomplete ones do not have enough computing ability and the presented MAC protocol package is reduced to two phases plus an additional downloading phase. Numerical analysis shows that feature-complete systems using mini-slot TDMA have the best real-time performance, in comparison with feature-incomplete systems and other feature-complete counterparts. Feature-incomplete systems are more energy-saving than feature-complete ones, owing to the absence of in-network data exchange.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic communication is one of the key technologies in various important research fields, such as ocean geography, offshore oil industry and defense. However, conventional system design can not achieve desirable results, since the underwater channel suffers a lot from multipath propagation and Doppler Effect. In this paper, we aim to introduce a type of coherent underwater acoustic communication system, which combine the joint synchronization and equalization scheme and the joint iterative equalization and decoding technique to combat the severe underwater environment mentioned above. The platform belongs to the physical layer and can take various high layer applications. The proposed system is tested in computer simulated scenarios and experimental data, both of which demonstrate good performance.

Abstract:Driven by the increasing demand on marine exploration, UWANs are confronted with the rigorous challenge of improving network throughput. To deal with this challenge, this article proposes to apply the IBFD technique to UWANs. The IBFD technique can potentially double link capacity by simultaneously transmitting and receiving on the same frequency band, which has been recently demonstrated to be feasible for wireless communications. In this article, novel MAC protocols are specifically proposed for the acoustic IBFD network to overcome the inherent issues in underwater acoustic communications, such as long packet delay, large node collision probability, and high power consumption. Numerical results verify that our proposals can effectively mitigate these effects and improve the overall performance of the UWANs.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for marine exploration, underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) are prone to have the characteristics of large-scale, long term monitoring, and high data traffic load. Underwater media access control (MAC) protocols, which allow multiple users to share the common medium fairly and efficiently, are essential for the performance of UASNs. However, the design of MAC protocols is confronted with the challenges of spatial unfairness, data eruption, and low energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel data concurrent transmission (DCT) MAC protocol, which is able to exploit long propagation delay and conduct concurrent transmission. Specifically, we present the theoretical performance analysis of the proposed MAC protocol in detail and give an analytical solution of the success concurrent transmission probability between nodes. In addition, simulation results are provided to demonstrate that our proposed protocol is appropriate for UASNs and can significantly improve the performance in terms of network throughput and energy consumption. Finally, we give some typical future applications of UASNs and discuss the demands on MAC protocol design.

Abstract:Due to the characteristics of underwater acoustic channel, such as long propagation delay and low available bandwidth, media access control (MAC) protocol designed for the underwater acoustic sensor network (UWASN) is quite different from that for the terrestrial wireless sensor network. However, for the contention-based MAC protocols, the packet transmission time is long because of the long preamble in real acoustic modems, which increase the packet collisions. And the competition phase lasts for long time when many nodes are competing for the channel to access. For the schedule-based MAC protocols, the delay is too long, especially in a UWASN with low traffic load. In order to resolve these problems, a hybrid reservation-based MAC (HRMAC) protocol is proposed for UWASNs in this paper. In the proposed HRMAC protocol, the nodes reserve the channel by declaring and spectrum spreading technology is used to reduce the collision of the control packets. Many nodes with data packets to be transmitted can reserve the channel simultaneously, and nodes with reserved channel transmit their data in a given order. The performance analysis shows that the proposed HRMAC protocol can improve the channel efficiency greatly. Simulation results also show that the proposed HRMAC protocol achieves better performance, namely higher network throughput, lower packet drop ratio, smaller end-to-end delay, less overhead of control packets and lower energy overhead, compared to existing typical MAC protocols for the UWASNs.

Abstract:Single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) is a promising technique for coherent underwater acoustic communications. The method has a lower peak-to-average power ratio than orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and is more resistant to frequency offset. In this work, SC-FDE performance is evaluated using data collected during the 2009 Cooperative Array Performance Experiment (CAPEx09) that took place near Seattle, WA, USA. CAPEx09 had two densely populated vertical receiving arrays and a highly refractive environment, features that make it suitable for examining issues related to sensor positioning in range and depth. Two-channel equalization results show only a weak dependence on the spacing between the two sensors. Communications performance is interpreted in terms of relevant propagation physics, including acoustic ducting and rough surface scattering. The implications for undersea acoustic networks are discussed.

Abstract:Long propagation delay, limited bandwidth and high bit error rate pose great challenges in Media Access Control (MAC) protocol design for underwater acoustic networks. A reservation based MAC protocol called R-MAC designed for underwater acoustic networks was proposed and analyzed. However, there exists channel resources waste problem in R-MAC. In order to overcome this drawback, this paper proposes an improved R-MAC based MAC protocol for underwater acoustic networks, called NR-MAC. To improve the channel utilization, NR-MAC introduces a new control packet called xREV. Then a new mechanism for data sending and receiving is designed and improved scheduling algorithms at receiver are proposed. Simulation results show that NR-MAC increases the network throughput as compared with R-MAC.

Abstract:With the development of marine exploration, underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) are characterized by large-scale, high-flow loads. In addition, media access control (MAC) protocols have a significant impact on the performance of UASNs due to their limited bandwidth, time variation, and long-propagation delayed underwater acoustic channel characteristics. This paper proposes a time-based adaptive collision-avoidance real-time (ACART) MAC protocol that combines concurrent transmission, adaptive scheduling transmission, and variable time slots to improve network throughput and channel utilization. The strategy of concurrent transmission improves channel utilization by reducing the number of handshakes. Scheduling transmission avoids packet collisions. The approach of using variable time slots increases the flexibility of the network. The simulation results show that the network throughput outperforms traditional protocols in large-scale, high-traffic load networks.

Abstract:This paper mainly investigates the application of underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs), which are characterized by large-scale, sparse distribution, and varying traffic loads. Since the underwater acoustic channel is known for limited bandwidth, time variation, and long propagation delays, the strategy to access the common communication medium is required to improve the performance of UASNs. This paper proposes a delay and queue aware adaptive scheduling-based medium access control (DQA-MAC) protocol for UASNs. It combines adaptive scheduling transmission, reduction of handshaking packets, and concurrent transmission with the propose of improving the performance of network throughput, shortening end-to-end delay, reducing average energy consumption, and enhancing the fairness of transmission. Data transmission time is scheduled based on the information of propagation delays and the number of data packets waiting in each node queue. Furthermore, the strategy of concurrent transmission is implemented to leverage the long propagation delays. At last, reducing the number of handshaking packets is achieved with the approach of exchanging information by specially designed packets frames. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol outperforms the related traditional protocols in networks with varying traffic loads.

Abstract:This paper introduces the realization of a wideband MIMO underwater acoustic (UWA) communication experimental system. The system aims at the inherent characteristics of shallow sea acoustic channel with reasonable hardware design. The DT9836 and the DT9816 are used as multifunction data acquisition (DAQ) modules for transmitter and receiver respectively. The USB is used as the communication interface between the underlying hardware equipment and the host computer with QuickDAQ software. The system is verified for its reliability and practicability through the experiments in an anechoic tank and Zhoushan shallow sea area.

Abstract:Underwater wireless communication has gained a great deal of attention in the last couple of decades because of its applications in the military, industrial, and monitoring sectors. Despite the extreme physical and MAC layer difficulties, acoustics are used for various applications among the various modes of underwater communication technologies used. While significant research efforts have been made to address these issues, the bottleneck remains in achieving high bandwidth, high throughputs, and data rate. Researchers have begun to look into full duplex (FD) implementation to improve bandwidth efficiency and increase data rate and throughput. Users can send and receive data simultaneously over the FD links, maximizing bandwidth utilization and increasing throughput. As a result, we thoroughly reviewed various FD physical layered UWAC systems and MAC layered protocols for underwater communication. The various problems that the aforementioned systems and protocols have faced, as well as the solutions suggested in previous works to solve each problem, are also highlighted. Various metrics are used to compare the performance of various physical layered FD systems and FD MAC protocols. We also explore some of the open research questions in these FD-physical layered and MAC layered protocols, as well as future research directions. Based on ample information, we suggest a cross-layered architecture based on various IBFD-SI cancellations, DA-CSMA, and FD-MAC protocols. This review provides a broad view of the current FD physical and MAC layered protocols based on acoustic communication, as well as recommendations.

Abstract:It is a great challenge to design effective protocols for underwater acoustic communication networks due to the specific characteristics of underwater acoustic channel, such as long propagation delay and limited available bandwidth. In order to reduce the average end-to-end delay and improve the network throughput, a multi-node cooperative MAC protocol joint with space-time encoding of physical layer for multi-user MIMO centralized network is proposed in this paper. It is receiver-initiated, where the receiver groups the reserved nodes into a series of cells according to the propagation delay between individual reserved node and itself. By scheduling the transmission time, the data packets sent by the nodes in the same cell are guaranteed to reach the receiver within a predetermined time deviation, realizing cooperative parallel transmission of multiple nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed MAC protocol achieves the shortest end-to-end delay and optimal normalized network throughput under different network sizes, traffic loads and data packet lengths compared with other three existing protocols. The performance improvement is significant especially when the data packet length is longer and the load is heavier.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic communications (UAC) feature frequency-dependent signal attenuation, long propagation delay and doubly-selective fading. Thus the design of reliable UAC protocols is challenging. On the other hand, cooperative relay communications, which have been extensively studied in terrestrial environments, are promising paradigms for reliable communications. However, their application to UAC has not been thoroughly explored. In this study, the authors will design an asynchronous relaying protocol to achieve reliable underwater communications. This new scheme accounts for and takes advantage of the unique characteristics of UAC channels. To avoid time synchronisation difficulty in UAC, and facilitate energy-efficient relay processing, asynchronous amplify-and-forward relaying is adopted in the protocol. In addition, precoded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is chosen to address the frequency selectivity issue in UAC, while collecting ample multipath diversity provided by the channel and enabled by the asynchronous relaying design. To demonstrate the performance of the protocol, the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio is derived, the average pair-wise error probability is evaluated and the maximum collectable diversity is also proven. Simulations and comparisons are presented to corroborate the analyses and design.

In this paper, we propose a Slotted-FAMA based MAC protocol for underwater wireless sensor networks with data train, called SFAMA-DT. It improves the channel utilization by forming a train of data packets of multiple transmission pairs during each round of simultaneously handshakes, which overcomes the multiple RTS attempts problem of Slotted-FAMA in high traffic environments and greatly reduces the relative proportion of time wasted due to the propagation delays of control packets. Our simulations show that the SFAMA-DT is able to achieve much higher throughput than the Slotted-FAMA protocol.
Direct Acoustic Communication Between Underwater and Airborne Nodes

Abstract:Direct acoustic communication between underwater and airborne nodes has always been considered unfeasible due to the energy loss caused by the strong surface reflection of sound waves. However, contrary to popular belief, our study demonstrates that underwater transducers can effectively transmit detectable acoustic signals in the air. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted an experiment involving the deployment of an underwater transducer at a depth of 1 m, while an unoccupied aerial vehicle equipped with a voice recorder was positioned at various altitudes ranging from 2 to 30 m and horizontal distances of 0–30 m. Sound pressure levels were measured at 20 different positions within the frequency range of 10–20kHz, and orthogonal frequency division multiplex acoustic communication signals were recorded at specific positions. Our findings reveal the successful establishment of a direct acoustic communication link between the water and air interface, achieving a data rate of 4.565 kbps. This study opens up new possibilities for practical applications in underwater-to-air communication systems.

Abstract:Long propagation delay, limited bandwidth, and high bit error rate pose great challenges in media access control (MAC) protocol design for underwater acoustic networks. A MAC protocol called slotted floor acquisition multiple access (slotted-FAMA) suitable for underwater acoustic networks is proposed and analyzed. This FAMA based protocol adds a time slot mechanism to avoid DATA packet collisions. However, slotted-FAMA is not suitable for dense networks since the multiple request-to-send (RTS) attempts problem in dense networks is serious and greatly limits the network throughput. To overcome this drawback, this paper proposes a slotted-FAMA based MAC protocol for underwater acoustic networks, called RC-SFAMA. RC-SFAMA introduces an RTS competition mechanism to keep the network from high frequency of backoff caused by the multiple RTS attempts problem. Via the RTS competition mechanism, useful data transmission can be completed successfully when the situation of multiple RTS attempts occurs. Simulation results show that RC-SFAMA increases the network throughput efficiency as compared with slotted-FAMA, and minimizes the energy consumption.
