Abstract:We consider the problem of state observation for systems having a well-defined observability canonical form (Gauthier and Kupka (2004)) by means of high-gain observers. The main goal is to show that, for this class of systems, observers can be designed with the high-gain parameter powered just up to the order 2 regardless the dimension of the state system. In this way we substantially overtake the main limitations of standard design procedures in which the high-gain parameter is powered up to the order of the system. The observer structure, which generalizes the ideas presented in Astolfi and Marconi (2015), can be used in all those contexts where fast state observation is required, such as in the design of output feedback stabilizers by means of the nonlinear separation principle that is also specifically addressed in the paper.

Abstract:We address the problem of output stabilization for the class of nonlinear minimumphase systems with a well-defined relative degree whose output is affected by measurement noise. In the proposed control structure the derivatives of the output are estimated by means of a new high-gain observer proposed in Astolfi and Marconi [2015], which, with respect to high-gain observers conventionally used in literature, has limited gain power. The advantage in using the proposed observer is in its implementation for systems with high relative degree and in the sensitivity to the sensor noise. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed control structure.

Abstract:The observability of nonlinear systems was considered in this note. First, we reviewed the definitions and relations of observable, locally observable, weakly observable, locally weakly observable, uniformly locally weakly observable and completely uniformly locally weakly observable. Then, a sufficient condition under which a multi-output nonlinear system is completely uniformly locally weakly observable was given. The sufficient condition becomes necessary and sufficient condition when the system is single-output. We also gave a canonical form of these multi-output systems. In the end, an example illustrated how to use the given sufficient conditions to determine whether a nonlinear system is completely uniformly locally weakly observable.

Abstract:Suppose the nonlinear function of hyperchaotic dynamical systems satisfies the Lipschitz condition, the Lyapunov function of the error equation for hyperchaotic system and the observer is constructed, and the stabilization of the observer is discussed for which the observer gain can be given explicitly. The choosing method of observer's parameters is given based on the Lyapunov stabilization theory. Several numerical simulations of hyperchaotic systems show that the observer is effective to observe the hyperchaotic systems.

Abstract:Two distributed extended high‐gain observers are studied for the generalized strict‐feedback system in presence of external disturbance. The system state dynamics are reconstructed admissibly based on the limited measured output. First, a distributed high‐gain observer is constructed to ensure the semiglobal ultimate uniform convergence of the state estimation error between the estimated state in each local observer and system state, for any prescribed initial system values. However, the dimension of the proposed distributed observer is n + 1 and the high‐gain parameter is powered up to n + 1. Therefore, a 2(n + 1)‐dimension distributed high‐gain low‐power observer is delicately designed, with the high‐gain parameter powered fixed to 2. The formulated distributed observer is easy‐implementation and the estimation error can reach fast convergence. Finally, a chaotic oscillator and a pendulum‐cart system are introduced to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:The problem of state reconstruction in dynamical systems, known as observer problem, is undoubtedly crucial for controlling or just monitoring processes. For linear systems, the corresponding theory has been quite well established for several years now, and the purpose of the present book is to propose an overview on possible tools in that respect for nonlinear systems. Basic observability notions and observer structures are first recalled, together with ingredients for advanced designs on this basis. A special attention is then paid to the well-known high gain techniques with a summary of various corresponding recent results. A focus on the celebrated Extended Kalman filter is also given, in the perspectives of both nonlinear filtering and high gain observers, leading to so-called adaptive-gain observers. The more specific immersion approach for observer design is then emphasized, while optimization-based methods are also presented as an alternative to analytic observers. Various practical application examples are included in those discussions, and some fields of application are further considered: first the problem of nonlinear output regulation is reformulated in a perspective of observers, and then the problem of parameter or fault estimation is briefly mentioned through some adaptive observer tools.

Abstract:To cope with the well-known peaking phenomenon and noise sensitivity in the application of the High-Gain observer, a parameter tuning method based on the LPV/LMI approach for a 2nd-order cascade observer structure is proposed in this paper. Compared to other high-gain observer methods, this method can significantly reduce the infimum of gain in the observer, thereby reducing the peak phenomenon of state estimation and the influence of measurement output noise. By transforming the observer structure into a Luenberger-like structure, the parameters of the observer can be solved by one linear matrix inequality (LMI) with a high-gain effect or a 2 n of LMI sets (LMIs) without a high-gain effect. Then by decomposing the nonlinear part of the system dynamics into high-dimensional and low-dimensional parts, we could solve the adjustable number of LMIs can be solved to obtain the result with limited high-gain effect. Stability analysis based on the Lyapunov method proves the convergence of this method, and the effectiveness of this method is verified through applications to one single-link mechanical arm model and a vehicle trajectory estimation application.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider input-affine invertible MIMO nonlinear systems which can be transformed into a special normal form by means of the structure algorithm. The normal form highlights a partial state, a subset of state variables, which plays in this setting a role similar to that of the outputs and its derivatives in a SISO system. It is shown that, if a system in this class can be asymptotically stabilized by means of a static feedback from that partial state, then semiglobal stabilization can be achieved via dynamic feedback driven by the output of the system. The dynamic feedback in question is based a (non–trivial) extension to MIMO systems of the standard high–gain observer.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-gain observer (HGO) approach is used to design a nonlinear observer for nonlinear systems in canonical observer form. The design uses multiple low-power (LP) observers with low-pass filters that provide a state estimation approach as a weighted sum of the individual observer state variables. As for the typical HGO design, it is shown that the estimation error dynamics of the proposed observer are input-to-state stable (ISS) with regard to measurement noise with a tunable convergence rate. It is also demonstrated that the multiple LP observer yields a smaller bound on the estimation error than the HGO and LP. Finally, the steady-state behaviour of the observer is characterized. For the linear case, the observer improves the sensitivity of the state estimates to measurement noise. The effectiveness of the suggested approach is demonstrated for the identification of a robot arm for which the observer is used as a numerical differentiator.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method to estimate the state of nonlinear generalized systems subject to nonlinear algebraic constraints via H∞ observers. Compared with previous research, the proposed approach relaxes the linear algebraic constraint and the infinite observability, making it applicable to a wider range of generalized systems. The generalized inverse technique for matrices avoids the additional structural requirements caused by the nonlinear algebraic constraints. Moreover, we assume an easier-to-implement rank condition than infinite observability, allowing for the handling of two different observability. Building on the above, the method can be extended to systems with nonlinear outputs after converting them to a suitable form. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we demonstrate three practical applications, including observer designing for electromechanical systems , Lithium batteries, and vehicles.

Abstract:This note considers the problem of observer design for a class of multi-output nonlinear systems. A new state observer design methodology for linear time-varying multi-output systems is presented. Furthermore, we show that the same methodology can be extended to a class of multi-output nonlinear systems. Some sufficient conditions for the existence of the proposed observer are obtained, which guarantee that the error of state estimation converges asymptotically to zero. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:For a class of uniformly observable nonlinear multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems with unknown parameters in both state and output equations, an adaptive observer is designed in a constructive manner based on the techniques of high gain observer and adaptive estimation. The high gain adaptive observer for joint state and unknown parameter estimation is conceptually simple. The new algorithm makes use of a time varying gain matrix for unknown parameter estimation, which simplifies the initialization and parameter tuning. In order to establish the global exponential convergence of the adaptive observer, a persistent excitation condition is required. Consequently, the global exponential convergence for simultaneous estimation of states and unknown parameters is formally established following a simple procedure. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the performance of this adaptive observer.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a new observer design technique for nonlinear systems. It combines the well-known Kazantzis-Kravaris-Luenberger observer and the recently introduced parameter estimation-based observer, which become special cases of it---extending the realm of applicability of both methods. A second contribution of the paper is the proof that these designs can be recast as particular cases of immersion and invariance observers---providing in this way a unified framework for their analysis and design. Simulation results of a physical system that illustrates the superior performance of the proposed observer compared to other existing observers are presented.

Simultaneous State and Unknown Input Set-Valued Observers for Some Classes of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we propose fixed-order set-valued (in the form of l2-norm hyperballs) observers for some classes of nonlinear bounded-error dynamical systems with unknown input signals that simultaneously find bounded hyperballs of states and unknown inputs that include the true states and inputs. Necessary and sufficient conditions in the form of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) for the stability (in the sense of quadratic stability) of the proposed observers are derived for ($\mathcal{M},\gamma$)- Quadratically Constrained (($\mathcal{M},\gamma$)-QC) systems, which includes several classes of nonlinear systems: (I) Lipschitz continuous, (II) ($\mathcal{A},\gamma$)-QC* and (III) Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) systems. This new quadratic constraint property is at least as general as the incremental quadratic constraint property for nonlinear systems and is proven in the paper to embody a broad range of nonlinearities. In addition, we design the optimal $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ observer among those that satisfy the quadratic stability conditions and show that the design results in Uniformly Bounded-Input Bounded-State (UBIBS) estimate radii/error dynamics and uniformly bounded sequences of the estimate radii. Furthermore, we provide closed-form upper bound sequences for the estimate radii and sufficient condition for their convergence to steady state. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed set-valued observers is demonstrated through illustrative examples, where we compare the performance of our observers with some existing observers.

Abstract:This paper considers the exponential observer design for a class of nonlinear systems with output nonlinearities. The nonlinear terms in the systems are assumed to satisfy incremental quadratic constraints which include many commonly encountered nonlinearities in existing literature as some special cases. We construct a circle-criterion-based observer by injecting both the linear and the nonlinear output error terms into the observer system. Sufficient conditions ensuring the exponential stability of the proposed observer are established and formulated in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Finally, the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed design approach are illustrated through two examples.

Abstract:State-estimation-based properties are central properties in discrete-event systems modeled by labeled finite-state automata studied over the past 3 decades. Most existing results are based on a single agent who knows the structure of a system and can observe a subset of events and estimate the system's state based on the system's structure and the agent's observation to the system. The main tool used to do state estimation and verify state-estimation-based properties is called \emph{observer} which is the powerset construction originally proposed by Rabin and Scott in 1959, used to determinize a nondeterministic finite automaton with $\varepsilon$-transitions. In this paper, we consider labeled finite-state automata, extend the state-estimation-based properties from a single agent to a finite ordered set of agents and also extend the original observer to \emph{high-order observer} based on the original observer and our \emph{concurrent composition}. As a result, a general framework on high-order state-estimation-based properties have been built and a basic tool has also been built to verify such properties. This general framework contains many basic properties as its members such as state-based opacity, critical observability, determinism, high-order opacity, etc. Special cases for which verification can be done more efficiently are also discussed. In our general framework, the system's structure is publicly known to all agents $A_1,\dots,A_n$, each agent $A_i$ has its own observable event set $E_i$, and additionally knows all its preceding agents' observable events but can only observe its own observable events. The intuitive meaning of our high-order observer is what agent $A_n$ knows about what $A_{n-1}$ knows about \dots what $A_2$ knows about $A_1$'s state estimate of the system.

Abstract:In this article, a family of state observers is proposed for a class of SISO linear systems with time-varying coefficients and one unknown input satisfying the structural property of uniform strong observability. It is proved that, if the unknown input is bounded, the observer converges globally and at least asymptotically to the true states of the system. Furthermore, depending on an adequate selection of parameters and gains in the observer, the convergence is global and theoretically exact, in finite-time or even more, in fixed-time, with an attainable arbitrary convergence time. The effectiveness of the observation scheme is illustrated in a practical way on a laboratory crane with movement in two dimensions. The formal proofs of the results are performed with a Lyapunov approach and applying arguments of homogeneity in the bi-limit.
