This paper addresses the issue of energy aware resource allocation with limited backhaul capacity in uplink cooperative reception, where two base stations (BSs) equipped with single-antenna each serving multiple users with single-antenna via multicarrier are considered. We propose a novel energy efficient cooperative scheme based on compress-and-forward and user pairing to solve the problem in two base stations scenario. In order to maximize system throughput and increase energy efficiency under the limited backhaul capacity constraint, we formulate the joint optimization problem of user pairing, subcarrier mapping, and backhaul capacity sharing between different pairs (subcarriers). An energy efficient algorithm based on alternating optimization strategy and perfect mapping is proposed to solve this mixed integer programming problem. Simulations show that this allocation algorithm can improve the system capacity and energy efficiency significantly compared with the blind alternatives.

Abstract:The widespread application of wireless services and dense devices access have triggered huge energy consumption. Because of the environmental and financial considerations, energy-efficient design in wireless networks becomes an inevitable trend. To the best of the authors' knowledge, energy-efficient orthogonal frequency division multiple access heterogeneous small cell optimization comprehensively considering energy efficiency maximization, power allocation, wireless backhaul bandwidth allocation, and user Quality of Service is a novel approach and research direction, and it has not been investigated. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient power allocation and wireless backhaul bandwidth allocation in orthogonal frequency division multiple access heterogeneous small cell networks. Different from the existing resource allocation schemes that maximize the throughput, the studied scheme maximizes energy efficiency by allocating both transmit power of each small cell base station to users and bandwidth for backhauling, according to the channel state information and the circuit power consumption. The problem is first formulated as a non-convex nonlinear programming problem and then it is decomposed into two convex subproblems. A near optimal iterative resource allocation algorithm is designed to solve the resource allocation problem. A suboptimal low-complexity approach is also developed by exploring the inherent structure and property of the energy-efficient design. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms by comparing with the existing schemes.

This paper focuses on resource allocation within capacity constrained backhaul in uplink cooperative wireless networks, where two base stations (BSs) equipped with single antennae serve multiple single-antennae users via multi-carrier transmission mode. In this work, we propose a novel cooperative transmission scheme based on compress-and-forward with user pairing to solve the joint mixed integer programming problem. To maximize the system capacity under the limited backhaul, we formulate the joint optimization problem of user sorting, subcarrier mapping and backhaul resource sharing among different pairs (subcarriers for users). A novel robust and efficient centralized algorithm based on alternating optimization strategy and perfect mapping is proposed. Simulations show that our novel method can improve the system capacity significantly under the constraint of the backhaul resource compared with the blind alternatives.

Abstract:To coexist with Wi-Fi friendly, a standalone long-term evolution network over unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) under listen-before-talk (LBT) mechanism can only access channel in a random and intermittent way, which results in random and time-variant delay in both data and signaling transmissions. In this work, we explore the impact of randomly delayed channel state information (CSI) on the performance of a standalone LTE-U network by analyzing its downlink throughput and users' energy efficiency (EE) under different CSI feedback schemes and frequency-domain schedulers. Further, aiming at maximizing users' EE of a standalone LTE-U network while guaranteeing fair coexistence with Wi-Fi, joint optimization on the medium access control (MAC) protocol and CSI feedback scheme is studied. Due to the non-convex and non-concave characteristic of the formulated optimization problems, decomposition-based low-complexity yet efficient algorithms are proposed. Simulation results not only verify the analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms but also show diverse impacts of CSI feedback scheme, frequency-domain scheduler, and traffic load of Wi-Fi on the standalone LTE-U network performance.

Abstract:Energy efficiency (EE) is a crucial performance metric in wireless-powered backscatter communication networks (WP-BackComNets) for achieving a good tradeoff between data rates and the overall energy consumption, which however has not been sufficiently exploited by the existing works. In this paper, an EE-based maximization resource allocation (RA) problem is studied in a downlink orthogonal frequency division multiple access-based WP-BackComNet, where the circuit power consumption of the backscatter device, the minimum energy harvesting (EH) constraint, and the maximum transmit power constraint of the power station are considered. To deal with the non-convex problem, we firstly transform it into an equivalently subtractive form via Dinkelbach's method. Then, we apply a variable substitution approach to transform the non-convex problem into a convex one, where the closed-form solutions of the reflection coefficient, the transmit power, and the EH time are deduced by using Lagrange dual method. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve better EE performance than other benchmark algorithms.

Abstract:This paper investigates a multiuser mobile edge computing system under interference channels, where mobile users can offload their latency-sensitive (computation-intensive) tasks to the mobile edge server via a base station (BS). In this work, we seek to jointly optimize the user selection indicators for offloading and the computation resources, as well as the transmit power level of the offloading users in order to minimize the system energy consumption under latency-sensitive, computation and transmit power budget, transmission quality, and user selection constraints. The proposed optimization problem is nonconvex and highly coupled, which is difficult to solve. By exploiting binary relaxation and introducing auxiliary variables, we first convert this problem into a more tractable form. We then propose a concave-convex procedure (CCCP) based algorithm to obtain the resulting problem. Furthermore, a simplified algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results are proposed to verify the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the sum alpha-fair utility maximization problem for joint downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) transmissions of a wireless powered communication network via time and power allocation. In the DL, the users with energy harvesting receiver architecture decode information and harvest energy based on simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. While in the UL, the users utilize the harvested energy for information transmission, and harvest energy when other users transmit UL information. We show that the general sum alpha-fair utility maximization problem can be transformed into an equivalent convex one. Trade-offs between sum rate and user fairness can be balanced via adjusting the value of alpha. In particular, for zero fairness, i.e., alpha = 0, the optimal allocated time for both DL and UL is proportional to the overall available transmission power. Trade-offs between sum rate and user fairness are presented through simulations.

Abstract:Resource allocation is very important for achieving interference suppression and protecting the quality of service of users in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). However, the existing works with perfect channel state information (CSI) and ideal hardware ignored the impact of channel uncertainties and hardware impairments on system performance. In this paper, we design a robust secure resource allocation algorithm with imperfect CSI to achieve the energy efficiency (EE) maximization of femtocell users for a two-tier downlink HetNet with multiple passive eavesdroppers, where the residual hardware impairments are considered at the transceivers. The formulated EE problem is non-convex with the consideration of the maximum transmit power constraint of each base station, the cross-tier interference power constraint, as well as the secure rate constraint. By using the worst-case approach and successive convex approximation, the resource allocation problem with the infinite-dimensional constraints is converted into a convex one which is efficiently solved by using convex optimization theory. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm has a higher EE and causes less interference power to macrocell users by comparing it with the baseline algorithms.

Abstract:LTE over unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) is one of the promising approaches to further improve LTE network throughput. To maximize the benefit of LTE-U, in this work we study joint resource allocation for LTE over the legacy licensed spectrum and the sharing unlicensed spectrum in a multicell scenario. Specifically, we formulate a mixed-integer power-channel allocation problem aiming at maximizing the network throughput, with the constraints of protecting the coexisting Wi-Fi networks and hardware limitation of user equipments in the LTE-U networks. To solve the resource allocation problem efficiently, we exploit delay column generation approach to decompose the original optimization problem and then propose a novel algorithm based KKT conditions. Simulation results show the advantage of LTE-U networking and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of convergence speed and network throughput.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of wireless resource allocation and semantic information extraction for energy efficient semantic communications over wireless networks is investigated. In the considered model, each user first extracts the semantic information from its large-scale data, and then transmits the small-sized semantic information to the base station (BS) which recovers the original data. Due to the limited energy budget of wireless users, both local computational energy and transmission energy must be considered. This joint computation and communication problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the total energy consumption of the network under a latency constraint. To solve this problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed where the optimal solution for joint bandwidth allocation, power control, and computation frequency optimization problem can be obtained. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:With the rapid development of cloud computing, the user-centric networks with the baseband unit pool have attracted a great deal of attentions in academic and industrial fields. However, limited fronthaul capacity and computation resource have become the bottlenecks inevitably. Thus, this paper investigates the power-efficient transmission in user-centric networks by considering both fronthaul capacity and computation resource constraints, where multiple access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs) are distributed. Specifically, a joint optimization of the beamforming vectors, AP-UE association strategy and transmission time is proposed to minimize the total power consumption (TPC). The formulated mixed integer non-linear problem (MINLP) is NP-hard. To address this problem, the MINLP is first transformed into a convex one via the successive convex approximation and semidefinite relaxation methods. Then, an iterative but effective algorithm is designed by using the property of the solution and applying the Lagrangian dual method. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm converges rapidly and outperforms benchmark algorithms in terms of TPC.

Abstract:Energy efficiency (EE) is a significant performance indicator in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted communication networks for providing a balance between power consumption minimization and transmission rate maximization. However, most of the current works focus on the transmission rate maximization under perfect channel state information (CSI) and exact coordinate information, which is too ideal in practical systems due to channel estimation errors and coordinate estimation errors. Thus, robust resource allocation algorithms with imperfect CSI and coordinate information are critically important to reduce users' outages and improve system robustness. In this article, a robust EE maximization problem with channel uncertainties and coordinate uncertainties is formulated for an energy harvesting-based device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying UAV-assisted network under some necessary constraints, which involve the outage probability constraints of ground terminals, the flight altitude constraint of the UAV, the minimum harvested energy constraints of D2D users, and the transmission time constraint. Both radio resource allocation and the flight altitude are jointly optimized based on the worst case approach. The considered nonconvex problem is transformed into a convex one by exploiting variable relaxation and variable substitution approaches. The Lagrange dual theory is used to derive the closed-form expressions of robust resource allocation. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by comparing it with the benchmark algorithms in terms of EE and robustness.

A Novel Energy Aware Uplink Cooperative Link Resource Allocation Method in LTE-A Networks

Abstract:Considering the demand on energy savings in future wireless networks, consumptions on cooperative links between different base stations becomes more and more critical with the rapid development of wireless communication systems. Coordinated Multi-Point Transmission/Reception (CoMP) gradually becomes popular due to the demand of higher transmission rate and more reliable Quality of Service (QoS), but the utilization of cooperative links will bring additional power consumption in signal processing and transmission in system cooperative link. In this paper, we propose a novel energy aware resource allocation scheme in cooperative links to reduce the energy consumption in system backhaul link. Considering the energy saving in cooperative uplink transmission scenario, we propose a novel energy aware resource allocation scheme to reduce energy consumption without losing system performance. First, we group different users in a sub-optimal way by analyzing the distance and the traffic load jointly, then we propose a multi-stage resource allocation scheme in system cooperative link by using the optimal multi-stage cooperative decoding scheme. By reducing the traffic load transmitted in system backhaul, the energy consumption in system backhaul will be reduced significantly. Simulation result indicates that, our proposed method could gain about 32% of the total energy consumption in system cooperative link and the influence to system performance is less than 2%, which could be omitted.

Abstract:The development of 5G wireless communication systems are changing the daily life. Both transmission speed and Quality of Service (QoS) are developing fast. However, the increasing demand of data traffic brought about the number of base stations, which lead to the additional consumption of system power. Therefore, some of the power consumption is unnecessary by achieving same system performance. In this work, we discuss the resource allocation method in different policies to reduce energy consumption without losing the performance. Both theoretic and system level results are given in this work.
Backhaul Capacity-Limited Joint User Association and Power Allocation Scheme in Ultra-Dense Millimeter-Wave Networks

Abstract:Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered a promising technology for fifth-generation (5G) wireless communications systems since it can greatly improve system throughput. Unfortunately, because of extremely high frequency, mmWave transmission suffers from the signal blocking problem, which leads to the deterioration of transmission performance. In this paper, we solve this problem by the combination of ultra-dense network (UDN) and user-centric virtual cell architecture. The deployment of dense small base stations (SBSs) in UDN can reduce transmission distance of signals. The user-centric virtual cell architecture mitigates and exploits interference to improve throughput by using coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission technology. Nonetheless, the backhaul burden is heavy and interbeam interference still severe. Therefore, we propose a novel iterative backhaul capacity-limited joint user association and power allocation (JUAPA) scheme in ultra-dense mmWave networks under user-centric virtual cell architecture. To mitigate interference and satisfy quality of service (QoS) requirements of users, a nonconvex system throughput optimization problem is formulated. To solve this intractable optimization problem, we divide it into two alternating optimization subproblems, i.e., user association and power allocation. During each iteration, a many-to-many matching algorithm is designed to solve user association. Subsequently, we perform power allocation optimization using a successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm. The results confirm that the performance of the proposed scheme is close to that of the exhaustive searching scheme, which greatly reduces complexity, and clearly superior to that of traditional schemes in improving system throughput and satisfying QoS requirements.
Energy Efficient Scheduling for mmWave Backhauling of Small Cells in Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

Abstract:Heterogeneous cellular networks with small cells densely deployed underlying the conventional homogeneous macrocells are emerging as a promising candidate for the fifth generation (5G) mobile network. When a large number of base stations are deployed, the cost-effective, flexible, and green backhaul solution becomes one of the most urgent and critical challenges. With vast amounts of spectrum available, wireless backhaul in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band is able to provide several-Gbps transmission rates. To overcome high propagation loss at higher frequencies, mmWave backhaul utilize beamforming to achieve directional transmission, and concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse) under low inter-link interference can be enabled to significantly improve network capacity. To achieve an energy efficient solution for the mmWave backhauling of small cells, we first formulate the problem of minimizing the energy consumption via concurrent transmission scheduling and power control into a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. Then we develop an energy efficient and practical mmWave backhauling scheme, where the maximum independent set based scheduling algorithm and the power control algorithm are proposed to exploit the spatial reuse for low energy consumption and high energy efficiency. We also theoretically analyze the conditions that our scheme reduces energy consumption, and the choice of the interference threshold for energy reduction. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns and system parameters, we demonstrate the superior performance of our scheme in terms of energy consumption and energy efficiency, and also analyze the choice of the interference threshold under different traffic loads, BS distributions, and the maximum transmission power.

Abstract:Wireless power transfer and short packet communications are effective methods to provide sustainable energy supplies to the interest of things (IoT) devices and achieve ultra low latency for IoT applications, respectively. In this letter, the resource allocation for energy efficient wireless powered short packet communication networks is studied under the nonlinear energy harvesting model. The problem of joint optimization of the transmit powers and the time allocation to maximize the system energy efficiency is solved via the golden section search, the bisection search and the successive convex approximation methods. The simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm compared to various state-of-the-art baseline algorithms.

Abstract:In wireless-powered backscatter communication (WP-BackCom) networks, backscatter transmitters modulate their information on the radio frequency (RF) signals received from the power beacon (PB) and reflect the modulated RF signal to their intended receivers. To optimize delay-quality of service provisioning and network power consumption, this letter proposes an interference-aware resource allocation scheme that aims to maximize effective energy efficiency (EEE) for WP-BackCom networks. In this scheme, reflection coefficients are analytically obtained and power allocation is performed at the PB via convex optimization. Results show that the proposed scheme substantially outperforms the baseline schemes in terms of EEE.
