Abstract:We consider Mahler measures of two well-studied families of bivariate polynomials, namely $P_t=x+x^{-1}+y+y^{-1}+\sqrt{t}$ and $Q_t=x^3+y^3+1-\sqrt[3]{t}xy$, where $t$ is a complex parameter. In the cases when the zero loci of these polynomials define CM elliptic curves over number fields, we derive general formulas for their Mahler measures in terms of $L$-values of cusp forms. For each family, we also classify all possible values of $t$ in number fields of degree not exceeding $4$ for which the corresponding elliptic curves have complex multiplication. Finally, for all such values of $t$ in totally real number fields of degree $n=2$ and $n=4$, corresponding to elliptic curves $\mathcal{F}_t$ (resp. $\mathcal{C}_t$), we prove that determinants of $n\times n$ matrices whose entries are Mahler measures corresponding to their Galois conjugates are non-zero rational multiples of $L^{(n)}(\mathcal{F}_t,0)$ (resp. $L^{(n)}(\mathcal{C}_t,0)$).

Abstract:By a formula of Villegas, the Mahler measures of $P_k(x,y)=x+1/x+y+1/y+k$ can be written as a Kronecker-Eisenstein series, where $k=\frac{4}{\sqrt{\lambda(2\tau)}}$ and $\lambda(\tau)=16\frac{\eta(\tau/2)^8\eta(2\tau)^{16}}{\eta(\tau)^{24}}$ is the modular lambda-function. If $\tau$ is taken to be CM points, we can use Villegas's formula to express the Mahler measures of $P_k$ as $L$-values of some modular forms. We prove that if $\tau_0$ is a CM point, then $\lambda(2\tau_0)$ is an algebraic number whose degree can be bounded by the product of the class numbers of $D_{\tau_0}$ and $D_{4\tau_0}$, where $D_{\tau}$ stands for the discriminant of a CM point $\tau$. Then we use the CM points with class numbers $\leqslant 2$ to obtain identities linking the Mahler measures of $P_k$ to $L$-values of modular forms. We get 35 identities, 5 of which are proven results, the others do not seem to appear in the literature. We also verify some cases of Beilinson's conjecture for elliptic curves over real quadratic fields that related to our discovery. Our method might also be used to other polynomial familys that mentioned in Villegas's paper.

Abstract:We express the Mahler measures of 23 families of Laurent polynomials in terms of Eisenstein-Kronecker series. These Laurent polynomials arise as Landau-Ginzburg potentials on Fano 3-folds, 16 of which define K3 hypersurfaces of generic Picard rank 19, and the rest are of generic Picard rank < 19. We relate the Mahler measure at each rational singular moduli to the value at 3 of the L-function of some weight-3 newform. Moreover, we find 10 exotic relations among the Mahler measures of these families.

Abstract:In this article, we study the Mahler measures of more than 500 families of reciprocal polynomials defining genus 2 and genus 3 curves. We numerically find relations between the Mahler measures of these polynomials with special values of L-functions. We also numerically discover more than 100 identities between Mahler measures involving different families of polynomials defining genus 2 and genus 3 curves. Furthermore, we study the Mahler measures of several families of nonreciprocal polynomials defining genus 2 curves and numerically find relations between the Mahler measures of these families and special values of L-functions of elliptic curves. We also find identities between the Mahler measures of these nonreciprocal families and tempered polynomials defining genus 1 curves. We will explain these relations by considering the pushforward and pullback of certain elements in K2 of curves defined by these polynomials and applying Beilinson’s conjecture on K2 of curves. We show that there are two and three explicit linearly independent elements in K2 of certain families of genus 2 and genus 3 curves, respectively.

Abstract:In this note we study the Mahler measures of reciprocal polynomials [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text]. We prove identities relating the Mahler measure of [Formula: see text] to special values of the [Formula: see text]-functions of weight 2 cusp forms of level 64. We also express the Beilinson regulator which is a [Formula: see text] determinant of Mahler measures as special value of [Formula: see text]-function of the elliptic curve defined by [Formula: see text].

Abstract:A famous formula of Rodriguez Villegas shows that the Mahler measures m(k) of P_k(x,y)=x+1/x+y+1/y+k can be written as a Kronecker-Eisenstein series. We prove that the degree of k in Villegas' formula can be bounded by the class numbers of CM points. This fact allows us to systematically derive 28 new identities linking m(k) to L-values of cusp forms. Guided by Beilinson's conjecture, we also prove 5 formulas that express L-values of CM elliptic curves over real quadratic fields to some 2× 2 determinants of m(k). This extends a recent work of Guo (the second author of this paper), Ji, Liu, and Qin, in which they dealt with the cases when k=4± 4√(2).

Abstract:We prove that under certain explicit conditions, the Mahler measure of a three-variable polynomial can be expressed in terms of elliptic curve $L$-values and Bloch-Wigner dilogarithmmic values, conditionally on Beilinson's conjecture. In some cases, these dilogarithmic values simplify to Dirichlet $L$-values. The proof involves a construction of an element in $K_4^{(3)}$ of a smooth projective curve over a number field. This generalizes a result of Lalín for the polynomial $z + (x+1)(y+1)$. We apply our method to several other Mahler measure identities conjectured by Boyd and Brunault.

Abstract:We relate the Mahler measure of exact polynomials in arbitrary variables to the Deligne cohomology of the Maillot variety using the Goncharov polylogarithmic complexes. In the four-variable case, we further study the relationship between the Mahler measure and special values of $L$-functions of $K3$ surfaces. The method involves a construction of an element in the motivic cohomology of $K3$ surfaces. We apply our method to the exact polynomial $(x+1)(y+1)(z+1) + t$.

Abstract:Following the work of Lalín and Mittal on the Mahler measure over arbitrary tori, we investigate the definition of the generalized Mahler measure for all Laurent polynomials in two variables when they do not vanish on the integration torus. We establish certain relations between the standard Mahler measure and the generalized Mahler measure of such polynomials. Later we focus our investigation on a tempered family of polynomials originally studied by Boyd, namely with and apply our results to this family. For the case, we explicitly calculate the generalized Mahler measure of over any arbitrary torus in terms of special values of the Bloch–Wigner dilogarithm. Finally, we extend our results to the several variable setting.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Boyd and Rodriguez Villegas relating the Mahler measure of the polynomial $(1+x)(1+y)+z$ and the value at $s=3$ of the $L$-function of an elliptic curve of conductor $15$. The proof makes use of the computation by Zudilin and the author of the regulator of certain $K_4$ classes on modular curves.

Abstract:In this article, we study the logarithmic Mahler measure of the one-parameter family \[Q_\alpha=y^2+(x^2-\alpha x)y+x,\] denoted by $m(Q_\alpha)$. The zero loci of $Q_\alpha$ generically define elliptic curves $E_\alpha$ which are $3$-isogenous to the family of Hessian elliptic curves. We are particularly interested in the case $\alpha\in (-1,3)$, which has not been considered in the literature due to certain subtleties. For $\alpha$ in this interval, we establish a hypergeometric formula for the (modified) Mahler measure of $Q_\alpha$, denoted by $\tilde{n}(\alpha).$ This formula coincides, up to a constant factor, with the known formula for $m(Q_\alpha)$ with $|\alpha|$ sufficiently large. In addition, we verify numerically that if $\alpha^3$ is an integer, then $\tilde{n}(\alpha)$ is a rational multiple of $L'(E_\alpha,0)$. A proof of this identity for $\alpha=2$, which is corresponding to an elliptic curve of conductor $19$, is given.

Abstract:We introduce the quaternionic Mahler measure for non-commutative polynomials, extending the classical complex Mahler measure. We establish the existence of quaternionic Mahler measure for slice regular polynomials in one and two variables. We study the quaternionic Mahler measure for real and slice regular polynomials, and consider the associated Lehmer problem. Various formulas of quaternionic Mahler measures are proved.
