Abstract:WirelessHART is considered to be one of the most promising wireless network protocols for its high robustness comparing to other similar wireless networks. The high robustness comes from its unique routing protocol and redundant superframe scheduling scheme. This paper focuses on the time-slot scheduling and channel assignment of WirelessHART and a graph route-based superframe scheduling scheme is proposed. In order to improve the communication reliability, our scheme applies hop-level retransmission mechanism in a multi-hop and multi-channel circumstance. Moreover, time-slot conflict and channel interference are considered and an effective solution strategy is proposed. To meet the real-time communication requirements, time-slots are assigned in the order of actual communication sequence which can effectively reduce the retransmission delay. Further more, we propose the implementation algorithm of our scheme. The performance analysis shows that our scheduling scheme has a higher robustness than the traditional non-redundancy scheme.
A highly reliable link scheduling strategy for WirelessHART networks

Abstract:WirelessHART is a kind of wireless mesh network communication standard specially designed for industrial process automation applications and FHSS as well as TDMA mechanism guarantees its robustness. In this paper, time slots and channels are allocated for each link in WirelessHART networks by edge-coloring, and a graph route-based link scheduling algorithm with collision avoidance is proposed. By combining the optimal routing algorithm with the multi-hop retransmission mechanism, the performance of WirelessHART networks is effectively improved. The analysis shows that the proposed scheduling strategy has a higher reliability and a lower latency than previous scheduling algorithms, which meets the requirements of the real-time communication in WirelessHART networks. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract:According to WIA-PA specification, TDMA and FDMA mechanism are used to transmit data and multi-hop mesh topology is supported, but the scheduling issue is still open. In this paper, the two types of conflict in wireless mesh network are analyzed and a link scheduling solution is proposed. The algorithm exploits the route characteristics of data transmitting in wireless multi-hop mesh networks and uses vertex-coloring method but not edge-coloring to schedule the timelots of superframe. The channel that a link will use in transmitting is assigned according to its depth in route when it is colored. By scheduling the links using the presented algorithm, the nodes of the network can transmit data respectively without conflicting with the others. Finally, the validity of algorithm is proved and the simulation result is provided.

Abstract:Joint routing-and-scheduling has been considered in wireless mesh networks for its significant performance improvement. While existing work assumes it, accurate traffic information is usually not available due to traffic dynamics, as well as inaccuracy and delay in its measurement and dissemination. In addition, the joint routing and scheduling usually requires a centralized controller to calculate the optimal routing and scheduling and distribute such policies to all the nodes. Thus, even if the accurate traffic information is always available, the central controller has to compute the routing and scheduling repeatedly because the traffic demands change continuously. This leads to prohibitive computation and distribution overhead. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a joint routing-scheduling scheme that achieves robust performance under traffic information uncertainty. In particular, it achieves worst-case optimal performance under a range of traffic conditions. This unique feature validates the use of centralized routing and scheduling in wireless mesh networks. As long as the traffic variation is within the estimation range, the routing and scheduling do not need to be recomputed and redistributed. Our simulation shows that the proposed scheme achieves very good average performance under a large error margin on traffic estimation and is robust when the estimation largely deviates from the actual traffic patterns. Our scheme provides insights on the desired properties of multipath routing, namely, spatial reuse and load balancing.

Abstract:The existing problems and possible solutions of the networked control system(NCS) are summarized.Aiming at the problems of the induced delay and lack of the certainty and real-time control of fieldbus control systems based on Ethernet transmission,this paper proposes a real-time scheduling scheme for EPA(Ethernet for plant automation) industrial fieldbuses.This scheme provides a scheduling algorithm with time division multiple access and clock synchronization that improve the determinism of systems.Parallel processing takes advantage of system resources and produces a more accurate scheduling.The scheme can also process periodic and non-periodic data packets at the same time.Experimental results on an FPGA test platform show the effectiveness of the design.

Abstract:Many routing protocols have been proposed for wireless sensor networks in recent years. For some special applications, not only energy aware but link reliable is needed. Historical link status should be captured while making routing decisions. In this paper, we design a reliable link quality estimation based routing protocol (LQER), which integrates the approach of minimum hop field and (m, k). The performance of LQER is evaluated by simulation experiments to be more energy-aware, with lower loss rate and better scalability than MHFR (Z. Ma and Y. Sun, 2004) and MCR (F. Ye et al., 2001). Thus the whole network may obtain longer lifetime and better link quality.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) interconnects massive cyber-physical devices (CPD) to provide various applications, such as smart home and smart building. Bluetooth Mesh is an emerging networking technology, which can be used to organize a massive network with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices. Managed-flooding protocol is used in Bluetooth Mesh to route the data packets. Although it is a highly desirable option when data transmission is urgent, it is inefficient in a larger and denser mesh network due to the collisions of broadcast data packets. In this paper, we introduce ACE: a Routing Algorithm based on Autonomous Channel Scheduling for Bluetooth Mesh Network. ACE relies on the existing Bluetooth Mesh messages to distribute routes without additional traffic overhead and conducts a beacon-aware routing update adaptively as the topology evolves. In ACE, BLE channel resources can be efficiently utilized by a channel scheduling scheme for each node locally and autonomously without any neighborly negotiation. We implement ACE on the nRF52840 from Nordic Semiconductor and evaluate its effectiveness on our testbed. Compared to the Bluetooth Mesh, our experiments proved that ACE could reduce the end-to-end latency by 16%, alleviate packets collisions issues, and increase the packet delivery ratio (PDR) by 30% under heavy traffic. Moreover, simulation results verified that ACE has better scalability when the size and density of networks become larger and denser.

Abstract:Wireless HART是一种高可靠的网状无线传感器网络通信协议.TDMA和FHSS技术增强了Wireless HART网络的抗干扰能力;其独特的图路由模型保留了网络中丰富的冗余路径.描述了如何为Wireless HART网络中的每一条链路分配时隙和安排信道,在避免冲突的前提下,提高网络性能,并且提出一种基于图路由的资源调度算法.我们的调度策略结合Wireless HART网络的路由选择算法和多跳重传机制,大大提高了网络的强健性,同时保证了网络具有较高的吞吐率.此外,考虑到网络通信的实时性,本文策略合理地安排链路的次序,充分利用了网络资源,有效地减少网络延时.通过性能分析表明我们的资源调度策略使网络性能接近最优.与目前已有的Wireless HART调度算法相比较,我们的调度策略具有高可靠性和低延时等优势.

Moreover, although it only guarantees the worst-case performance in theory, its average performance is also good. For example, our proposed scheme can perform better than a fixed optimal routing and scheduling scheme in more than 80 percent of 500 random traffic instances. Our scheme provides insights on the desired properties of multipath routing, namely, spatial reuse and load balancing.

Abstract:Graph routing is proposed in wirelessHART communication foundation, but the implementing of the algorithm is not specified. This paper proposes a graph routing mechanism termed ELHFR (EXHENCED LEAST-HOP FIRST ROUTING) that exploits the mesh topology and application characteristics of wirelessHART. ELHFR defines the network topology as a connected graph then generates the sub-graph that includes all the shortest paths from a node to the given destination. ELHFR does not need find the shortest paths of all nodes in the network, but only of the special nodes that are leaves of a breadth first tree. After several sub-graphs of topology graph are generated, the shortest paths to the destination of ever node can be found in them. The routing generating algorithm is presented in detail, as well as the routing updating mechanism. We analyze the ELFHR to provide intuitive understanding of its performance, and simulate it in OMNet++ subsequently. The simulation result shows that significant improvement over AODV routing in aspects of reliability and stability, which are the important requirements of industrial wireless network. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Aiming at the high reliable wirelessHART protocol, an innovative energy-balanced graph routing algorithm (EBGRA) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the network topology is established and initialized Based on graph routing. During the routing update process, by synthesizing the remaining energy, the communication cycles of nodes and the links in the network, the network manager calculates the robust coefficient of each node as the metric for nodes to select the proper next hop and generate the optimal path. Meanwhile, an upper threshold for the number of neighbors of each node is set so that the neighbors with smaller robust coefficient can be removed. EBGRA considers both the nodes' communication load and residual energy, not only making each path the shortest, but also greatly extending the lifetime of the network. Finally, simulations are carried out to demonstrate the long network lifetime and the high reliability of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we study high reliability, low latency and cost effective network planning for industrial wireless mesh networks. Based on the requirements of routing reliability, minimum end-to-end delay and reduced deployment cost in wireless mesh networks, such as WirelessHART network, we propose three network planning approaches following the principles of the shortest hops, the least routers and balance of the shortest hops and the least routers, respectively. We then implement the proposed algorithms respectively to generate the network deployment for a given factory layout. Simulation results show that there exists a performance trade-off between these three algorithms. The proposed algorithms have also been implemented and validated in an NS-2 WirelessHART network simulator.

Fieldbuses are typical industrial control networks and their real-time characteristic mainly depends on the temporal property of the MAC protocol, which also is requirement of a distributed computer control system. Both WorldFIP and FF are the most important fieldbuses by their character of adopting a schedule table (ST) to control the real-time communication of tasks. This paper mainly introduces the characteristic of the ST algorithm, including establishing and optimizing it, and how to use it to support real-time communication in an industrial control network.

Abstract:Network topology does not change dynamically in wireless mesh networks. Most of the end-to-end traffic flows are between mesh nodes and gateways. A tree-base routing algorithm is suitable for such network architecture. When using multichannel and multi-interface, routing algorithm and channel assignment is codependent. They should be combined together to fully exploit the network capacity. We propose a tree-based joint routing and channel assignment protocol with a new routing metric and a new channel assignment algorithm based on Hyacinth. Simulation result shows that the new protocol outperforms Hyacinth on network cross-section goodput and end-to-end delay.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the robust resource allocation problem targeting for providing end-to-end rate guarantee in multi-hop multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. We incorporate the concepts of interference margin and outage probability to characterize the network robustness under homogeneous and heterogeneous wireless channel conditions. The robust resource allocation problems are formulated as mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem by explicitly taking into account practical radio switching, co-channel contention and multi-path routing constraints. To reduce the complexity, we exploit the special property of the problems and decompose them into the feasibility-checking problem, and propose a binary search algorithm to find the optimal solution of the problems using an iterative procedure. Using traces collected from an indoor wireless testbed, we evaluate the proposed algorithms in terms of interference margin and outage probability. The simulation results show that our algorithms are superior to existing scheme under moderate channel variations and external interference.

Abstract:Industrial wireless mesh networks technologies as WirelessHART, ISA100.11a, WIA-PA, e.g., have become a communication infrastructure for process control in harsh and noisy environment. These control systems are wireless mesh networked control systems (WMNCSs). Compared with wireless sensor networks, the Wireless network control systems have more stringent requirements on reliability and real-time communication. Although WirelessHART has introduced many technologies to ensure the stringent reliable and timing properties, it does not provide much guidance on how to meet the design goals for close loop controller. In this work, we provide algorithms for constructing real-time scheduling for close-loop controller over WirelssHART networks. The experiments on test bed show that our scheme can provide highly reliable and real time communication for close loop control.

We formulate the robustness optimization problem that explicitly takes into account practical radio switching, co-channel contention, and multi-path routing and traffic splitting constraints. By exploiting the special property of the problem, we propose a scheme to decompose the problem into a feasibility-checking problem and an interference margin search problem, which is guaranteed to converge to the optimal value with reduced complexity. Using traces collected from an indoor wireless network testbed, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, and show that the algorithm is superior to existing scheme in providing larger interference margin and reducing packet loss probability.

Abstract:WirelessHART communication protocol is an emerging wireless sensor network communication protocol specification, which is applied to the industrial field because of its high reliability. According to the characteristics of wirelessHART data stream, a double-tree structure is used for original network topology. On the basis of it, the paper proposes a routing strategy for the wirelessHART network. The basic idea of the strategy is that the full-redundance routing method proposed in the WirelessHART specification is reserved for upstream routing, while the multi-path routing method is used for downstream routing. The strategy simplifies Graph routing, thus reducing the storage overhead of the network manager and device nodes, as well as routing maintenance overhead of whole network. Experimental results show that our algorithm is effective to reduce the routing overhead, while still keeping basic reliability of communication.

Abstract:The explosion of Internet traffic calls for quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed packet transmission in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with high energy and bandwidth efficiency. Conventional routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms focus on circuit switching, which does not well meet this requirement due to the bursty nature of IP traffic. Based on a novel traffic matrix decomposition technique, we study the joint design of traffic scheduling and routing in a reconfigurable WDM optical network to improve energy and bandwidth efficiency. Specifically, every node in the network is equipped with a set of parallel tunable lasers, each with a reconfiguration overhead. A dynamic matrix is adopted to model the traffic among the nodes and is decomposed into a set of transmission configurations (i.e., traffic scheduling). The configurations are then fulfilled by tuning the parallel lasers and routing the scheduled traffic under the topology constraint, to achieve loss-free packet transmissions with bounded delay (i.e., QoS guarantee). We reveal that a tradeoff exists between the packet delay and the required number of tunable lasers. The latter is then minimized under a given packet delay to save energy. As far as we know, this is the first work to adopt traffic matrix decomposition in WDM networks to save energy. The proposed framework is validated by extensive simulation studies.
