Abstract:An improved penalty immersed boundary method (pIBM) has been proposed for simulation of flow-induced deformation of three-dimensional (3D) elastic capsules. The motion of the capsule membrane is described in the Lagrangian coordinates. The membrane deformation takes account of the bending and twisting effects as well as the stretching and shearing effects. The method of subdivision surfaces is adopted to generate the mesh of membrane and the corresponding shape functions, which are required to be C1 continuous. The membrane motion is then solved by the subdivision-surface based finite element method on the triangular unstructured mesh. On the other hand, the fluid motion is defined on the Eulerian domain, and is advanced by the fractional step method on a staggered Cartesian grid. Coupling of the fluid motion and the membrane motion is realized in the framework of the pIBM. Using the proposed method, deformation of 3D elastic capsules in a linear shear flow is studied in detail, and validations are examined by comparing with previous studies. Both the neo-Hookean membrane and the Skalak membrane are tested. For an initially spherical capsule the tank-treading motion is formed under various dimensionless shear rates and reduced bending moduli. It is found that buckling occurs near the equator of the capsule for small shear rates but near the tips for large shear rates, which is suppressed by including the bending rigidity of the membrane. Effects of the Reynolds number and the membrane density are investigated for an initially spherical capsule. For a non-spherical capsule, with the initial shape of the oblate spheroid or the biconcave circular disk as a model of the red blood cell, the swinging motion is observed due to the shape memory effect. By decreasing the dimensionless shear rate or increasing the reduced bending modulus, the swinging motion is transited into the tumbling motion.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann flux solver (IB-LBFS) to simulate the interactions of viscous flow with deformable elastic structures, namely, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) capsules formed by elastic membranes. The IB-LBFS is based on a finite-volume formulation and makes use of hydrodynamic conservation equations with fluxes computed by a kinetic approach; thus, it is more flexible and efficient than the standard immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann methods. The membrane of the 2D capsule is represented by a set of discrete Lagrangian points, with in-plane and bending forces acting on the membrane obtained by a finite difference method. In contrast, the membrane of a 3D capsule is discretized into flat triangular elements with membrane forces calculated by an energy-based finite-element method. The IB-LBFS is first validated by studying the deformation of a circular capsule in a linear Newtonian and a power-law shear flow. Next, the deformation dynamics of a spherical, an oblate spheroidal, and a biconcave capsule in a simple shear flow are simulated. For an initially spherical capsule, the tank-treading motion of its membrane is reproduced at the steady state; while for oblate spheroidal and biconcave capsules, the swinging and tumbling motions are observed. Furthermore, under certain parameter settings, the transient mode from tumbling to swinging motions is also found, showing a rich and complex dynamic behavior of non-spherical capsules. These results indicate that the IB-LBFS can be employed in future studies concerning the dynamics of a capsule suspension in more realistic flows.

Abstract:The simulation of interaction between flow and the elastic structure is a complicated fluid-solid interaction problem, involving the structure's large deformation and fluid interface variation. In this paper, an adaptive CIP (constrained interpolation profile)-based numerical model has been presented to simulate this problem. In this CIP-based model, the constrained interpolation profile method, a high-order finite difference method, is employed as the base flow solver and THINC/SW (Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing with Slope Weighting) method, a volume of fluid method, is applied to capture the flow interface. IBM (immersed boundary method) method is used to treat the fluid-solid interface. The body deformation is calculated by coupled FDM-FEM (finite difference method and finite element method) method. Adaptive mesh is generated by Afivo (Adaptive Finite Volume quadtree/Octree mesh) framework. The cases of flow past a square and water entry of a symmetric solid wedge are carried out to validate the reliability of the flow solver in this present model. Cantilever beam deformation case is used to validate the accuracy of the solid solver in the present model. Then cases of a thin elastic beam in sloshing tank and dam-break flow are carried out by using this model. After that, the case of regular wave past a membrane breakwater is studied. Our numerical results are compared with previous experimental and numerical studies, and good agreements are obtained. It is demonstrated that this present numerical model has good applicability to simulate the interaction between flow and a thin elastic beam.

Abstract:Deformation of the spherical capsule in 3D simple shear flow is simulated using the immersed boundary method. The capsule membrane is regarded as an elastic medium satisfying the Neo-Hookean or Skalak elasticity. The motions of the capsule under various capillary numbers are studied. The results show that the deformation of the capsule becomes larger as the capillary number increases; in the same shear flow, the deformation under Skalak law is smaller than that under Neo-Hookean; for small capillary number the Taylor parameter agrees well with the analytical solution, whereas for large capillary number it is less than the analytical solution. Those results are validated by previous works obtained by the boundary integral method and the immersed boundary method.

Abstract:This study proposes an CIP (Constraint Interpolation Profile) viscous flow model that couples the Finite Element Method for structural deformation, to investigate the wave interaction with a fluid-filled membrane submerged breakwater. A modified ghost-cell immersed boundary method is adopted to achieve an accurate simulation of the fluid-structure interaction. After validation by published experimental data, the model is used to study the interaction between regular waves and a fluid-filled membrane submerged breakwater. The excess internal pressure, vorticity field, elastic modulus and structural responses are analyzed. The results show that, in lower excess internal pressure, the wave reflection, vortex shedding and energy dissipation are more significant. Be-sides, through the analysis of displacement and velocity distribution, three different vibration modes of the membrane structure are identified at different wave frequencies.
Modeling deformable capsules in viscous flow using immersed boundary method

Abstract:This paper presents an immersed boundary method (IBM) for deformable capsules in incompressible viscous flow. Unlike the conventional IBM, the present method utilizes an unstructured mesh coupled with the moving least squares method, which improves the performance for applications involving a complex geometry. We validate our method through independent studies on oscillation and deformation of spherical capsules in viscous flow. Our simulations on a deformable capsule flowing in an elbow channel show that the capsule capillary number affects its shape and deformation area significantly. The maximum deformation area is found to be linearly proportional to the capillary number. In addition, our simulation on soft capsule sorting using a pinched flow fractionation microfluidic device shows that smaller capsules tend to migrate toward the pinched wall region before streaming out in the expansion region. The result is that smaller capsules drift closer to the center plane of the device and can be efficiently separated from the larger ones using branching. For capsule sorting applications using T-junction, we found that the fate of a capsule depends on the relative position of its center of mass and the dividing streamline. Larger capsules are diverted from the main stream toward the side outlet, leading to effective size fractionation.

Abstract:An improved penalty immersed boundary (pIB) method has been proposed for simulation of fluid–flexible body interaction problems. In the proposed method, the fluid motion is defined on the Eulerian domain, while the solid motion is described by the Lagrangian variables. To account for the interaction, the flexible body is assumed to be composed of two parts: massive material points and massless material points, which are assumed to be linked closely by a stiff spring with damping. The massive material points are subjected to the elastic force of solid deformation but do not interact with the fluid directly, while the massless material points interact with the fluid by moving with the local fluid velocity. The flow solver and the solid solver are coupled in this framework and are developed separately by different methods. The fractional step method is adopted to solve the incompressible fluid motion on a staggered Cartesian grid, while the finite element method is developed to simulate the solid motion using an unstructured triangular mesh. The interaction force is just the restoring force of the stiff spring with damping, and is spread from the Lagrangian coordinates to the Eulerian grids by a smoothed approximation of the Dirac delta function. In the numerical simulations, we first validate the solid solver by using a vibrating circular ring in vacuum, and a second-order spatial accuracy is observed. Then both two- and three-dimensional simulations of fluid–flexible body interaction are carried out, including a circular disk in a linear shear flow, an elastic circular disk moving through a constricted channel, a spherical capsule in a linear shear flow, and a windsock in a uniform flow. The spatial accuracy is shown to be between first-order and second-order for both the fluid velocities and the solid positions. Comparisons between the numerical results and the theoretical solutions are also presented.

Abstract:An immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems involving viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries is presented in this paper. In this method, the fluid dynamics and the constitutive equations of viscoelastic fluids are both solved using the lattice Boltzmann method. In order to enhance numerical stability in solving the constitutive equations, an artificial damping is introduced which does not affect the numerical results if the damping effect is much smaller than the relaxation and the convective effects. The structural dynamics including 2D and 3D capsules, 2D and 3D rigid particles and flags, are solved by the finite difference method (2D capsules, 2D and 3D rigid particles and flags) and the finite element method (3D capsules). The interaction between the solid structure and the fluid is enforced by an immersed boundary method. The overall framework of this method is very simple, enabling modelling FSI problems involving viscoelastic fluids and the inertia of both fluids and structures. It is very efficient for FSI problems involving high Weissenberg numbers flows, large deformations and complicated geometries without any preconditioner. This work uses IB-LBM to solve for the first time, flows involving viscoelastic fluids coupled with non-massless deforming structures. The method is also capable of solving very high Weissenberg number problems, as demonstrated by simulations of flexible particle flows at Wi=100. The present method and models are validated by several cases including a 2D rigid particle migration in a Giesekus Couette flow, a spherical particle rotation in an Oldroyd-B shear flow, a spherical particle settling in a FENE-CR fluid, 2D and 3D capsules deformation in a Newtonian shear flow, and a 3D flag flapping in a Newtonian free stream. In addition, the present method is also applied to simulate the deformation of 2D and 3D capsules in an Oldroyd-B shear flow, a 3D flag flapping in an Oldroyd-B free stream, and elastic capsule movement in a contraction-expansion channel filled with an Oldroyd-B fluid. Deformation of the capsules decreases with the increase of the Weissenberg number and the capsules experience monotonically increasing deformation when the Weissenberg number is above a critical value which is respectively 10 for 2D and 2 for 3D simulations. Viscoelasticity of the Oldroyd-B fluid hinders the flapping motion of the 3D flag. For elastic capsules passing through a periodic contraction-expansion channel, the capsules mix up after a short-term evolution, and then migrate to the bottom of the channel and almost follow two steady trajectories after a long-term evolution. The validations and applications provide extensive data which may be used to expand the currently limited database available for FSI benchmark studies.

A Numerical Scheme for Coupled CFD and CSD Simulation of 3-D Fluid-Membrane Interactions

Abstract:SUMMARY For coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational solid dynamics (CSD) simulation of the threedimensional fluidmembrane interaction, a numerical scheme is developed by improving the material point method (MPM). In order to compute the stress state at any membrane point, a plane stress assumption is made in the local tangent plane consisting of membrane points, and a simple procedure is proposed to find the effective point connectivity information for determining the orientation of the local tangent plane. With an iterative algorithm, the existing MPM is improved for formulating fluid points so that fluid dynamics problems with strong shocks could be better simulated. The use of an Eulerian background mesh for solving the momentum equations enables the MPM to automatically handle fluidmembrane interactions without requiring special treatment. Three examples are used to demonstrate the features of the proposed numerical scheme, and to compare them with the analytical and FEM solutions. It appears from the comparison that the proposed procedure is robust and efficient to simulate the threedimensional fluidmembrane inter actions.
Fully Eulerian models for the numerical simulation of capsules with an elastic bulk nucleus

Abstract:In this paper, we present a computational framework based on fully Eulerian models for fluid-structure interaction for the numerical simulation of biological capsules. The flexibility of such models, given by the Eulerian treatment of the interface and deformations, allows us to easily deal with the large deformations experienced by the capsule. The modeling of the membrane is based on a full membrane elasticity Eulerian model that is capable of capturing both area and shear variations thanks to the so-called backward characteristics. In the validation section several test cases are presented with the goal of comparing our results to others present in the literature. In this part, the comparisons are done with different well-known configurations (capsule in shear flow and square-section channel), and by deepening the effect of the elastic constitutive law and capillary number on the membrane dynamics. Finally, to show the potential of this framework we introduce a new test case that describes the relaxation of a capsule in an opening channel. In order to increase the challenges of this test we study the influence of an internal nucleus, modeled as a hyperelastic solid, on the membrane evolution. Several numerical simulations of a 3D relaxation phenomenon are presented to provide characteristic shapes and curves related to the capsule deformations, while also modifying size and stiffness parameter of the nucleus.

Abstract:Dynamics of elastic capsules (elastic membrane enclosing viscous fluid) under flow,which is determined by membrane mechanical characteristics,significantly influence mass transfer across the capsule membrane.Based on front tracking method,a three-dimensional model with considering membrane elasticity and bending resistance was developed to study the effect of bending resistance on the capsule deformation and membrane tensions.It is found that as the bending resistance increases,both the capsule deformation and membrane tensions decrease.Besides,the inclusion of bending resistance inhibits the formation of membrane buckles,thus enhances the membrane stability of capsules.
Numerical simulation of an extensible capsule using regularized Stokes kernels and overset finite differences

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel numerical scheme for simulating deformable and extensible capsules suspended in a Stokesian fluid. The main feature of our scheme is a partition-of-unity (POU) based representation of the surface that enables asymptotically faster computations compared to spherical-harmonics based representations. We use a boundary integral equation formulation to represent and discretize hydrodynamic interactions. The boundary integrals are weakly singular. We use the quadrature scheme based on the regularized Stokes kernels. We also use partition-of unity based finite differences that are required for the computational of interfacial forces. Given an N-point surface discretization, our numerical scheme has fourth-order accuracy and O(N) asymptotic complexity, which is an improvement over the O(N^2 log(N)) complexity of a spherical harmonics based spectral scheme that uses product-rule quadratures. We use GPU acceleration and demonstrate the ability of our code to simulate the complex shapes with high resolution. We study capsules that resist shear and tension and their dynamics in shear and Poiseuille flows. We demonstrate the convergence of the scheme and compare with the state of the art.

Abstract:The immersed boundary method (IBM) has been frequently utilized to simulate the motion and deformation of biological cells and capsules in various flow situations. Despite the convenience in dealing with flow-membrane interaction, direct implementation of membrane viscosity in IBM suffers severe numerical instability. It has been shown that adding an artificial elastic element in series to the viscous component in the membrane mechanics can efficiently improve the numerical stability in IBM membrane simulations. Recently Li and Zhang (Int J Numer Methods Biomed Eng 35:e3200, 2019) proposed a finite-difference method for calculating membrane viscous stress. In the present paper, two new schemes are developed based on the convolution integral expression of the Maxwell viscoelastic element. We then conduct several tests for the accuracy, stability, and efficiency performances of these three viscous stress schemes. By studying the behavior of a one-dimensional Maxwell element under sinusoidal deformation, we find that a good accuracy can be achieved by selecting an appropriate relaxation time. The twisting sphere tests confirm that, compared to the numerical errors induced by other components in capsule simulations, such as the finite element method for membrane discretization and IBM for flow-membrane interaction, the errors from the viscous stress calculation are negligible. Moreover, extensive simulations are conducted for the dynamic deformation of a spherical capsule in shear flow, using different numerical schemes and various combinations of the artificial spring constants and calculation frequency for the membrane viscous stress calculation. No difference is observed among the results from the three schemes; and these viscous stress schemes require very little extra computation time compared to other components in IBM simulations. The simulation results converge gradually with the increase in the artificial spring stiffness; however, a threshold value exists for the spring stiffness to maintain the numerical stability. The viscous stress calculation frequency has no apparent influence on the calculation results, but a large frequency number can cause the simulation to collapse. We therefore suggest to calculate the membrane viscous stress at each simulation time step, such that a better numerical stability can be achieved. The three numerical schemes have nearly identical performances in all aspects, and they can all be utilized in future IBM simulations of viscoelastic membranes.

Abstract:An improved immersed boundarylattice Boltzmann method (IBLBM) developed recently [28] was applied in this work to simulate three-dimensional (3D) flows over moving objects. By enforcing the non-slip boundary condition, the method could avoid any flow penetration to the wall. In the developed IBLBM solver, the flow field is obtained on the non-uniform mesh by the efficient LBM that is based on the second-order one-dimensional interpolation. As a consequence, its coefficients could be computed simply. By simulating flows over a stationary sphere and torus [28] accurately and efficiently, the proposed IBLBM showed its ability to handle 3D flow problems with curved boundaries. In this paper, we further applied this method to simulate 3D flows around moving boundaries. As a first example, the flow over a rotating sphere was simulated. The obtained results agreed very well with the previous data in the literature. Then, simulation of flow over a rotating torus was conducted. The capability of the improved IBLBM for solving 3D flows over moving objects with complex geometries was demonstrated via the simulations of fish swimming and dragonfly flight. Numerical Simulation Of Free Surface Flow With An Elastic Plate Using A Cip-Based Model

Abstract:Free surface flow interaction with an elastic plate is simulated by a Constraint Interpolation Profile-based Model. A finite difference method (FDM) based on the CIP method is used for solving the flow field in a fixed staggered Cartesian grid and a finite element method (FEM) is used for dealing with the structural deformation. Beside, a volume of fluid type method, the THINC/SW (Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing with Slope Weighting) method is used to capture the free surface and a Ghost-Cell Immersed Boundary Method is adopted to couple the fluid and structure interaction. To verify the model, a rolling tank sloshing with a thin elastic plate is computed. Predicted results are found to be more agreement with the experimental results than reference data. Furthermore, two other benchmark experiments are tested, including an elastic gate deformation in dam break and a hanging elastic beam in a shallow oil sloshing. The computed results agree well with published literatures. It validates the reliability of the present solver to deal with nonlinear fluid-structure interactions.

Abstract:We present a volume-preserving scheme for two-phase immiscible incompressible flows using an immersed boundary method (IBM) in a three-dimensional space. The two-phase IBM employs a mixture of Eulerian and Lagrangian variables, where the fluid interface is represented by discrete Lagrangian markers exerting surface tension forces to the Eulerian fluid domain and the markers are advected by the fluid velocity. The interactions between the Lagrangian markers and the fluid variables are linked by the discretized Dirac delta function. The present study extends the previous two-dimensional research (Li et al., Volume preserving immersed boundary methods for two-phase fluid flows, Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids 69 (2012) 842–858) to the three-dimensional space. The key idea of the proposed method is relocating surface points along the normal directions to conserve the total volume. We perform a number of numerical experiments to show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this work, the inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolation is introduced into the implicit velocity correction-based immersed boundary method (IBM) for simulation of incompressible flows. In the original implicit velocity correction-based IBM, the solid body must be immersed in a uniform mesh region due to the use of the smooth Dirac delta function, which is utilized to associate Lagrangian points with their surrounding Eulerian points and only works with uniform meshes. The IDW method has the advantage that the interpolation range can be set flexibly. The introduction of the IDW interpolation can extend the application of the IBM to non-uniform meshes while reducing the number of Lagrangian points. The numerical test by the decaying vortex problem proves that the IDW interpolation does not significantly affect the overall accuracy of the IBM. In addition, numerical experiments for the flows around a circular cylinder and a NACA0012 airfoil demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method, including allowing fewer Lagrangian points while ensuring no streamline penetration to the solid body, as well as its adaptability to non-uniform meshes which can improve the computational efficiency due to the use of fewer mesh points. Finally, the simulation of the flow past a stationary sphere illustrates that the proposed method can effectively simulate the three-dimensional flow.

Abstract:This paper presents a fully coupled three-dimensional solver for the analysis of interaction between pulsatile flow and large deformation structure. A partitioned time marching algorithm is employed for the solution of the time dependent coupled discretised problem, enabling the use of highly developed, robust and well-tested solvers for each field. Conservative transfer of information at the fluid-structure interface is combined with an effective multi-predict-correct iterative scheme to enable implicit coupling of the interacting fields at each time increment. The three-dimensional unsteady incompressible fluid is solved using a powerful implicit time stepping technique and an ALE formulation for moving boundaries with second-order time accurate is used. A full spectrum of total variational diminishing (TVD) schemes in unstructured grids is allowed implementation for the advection terms and finite element shape functions are used to evaluate the solution and its variation within mesh elements. A finite element dynamic analysis of the highly deformable structure is carried out with a numerical strategy combining the implicit Newmark time integration algorithm with a Newton-Raphson second-order optimisation method. The proposed model is used to predict the wave flow fields of a particular flow-induced vibrational phenomenon, and comparison of the numerical results with available experimental data validates the methodology and assesses its accuracy. Another test case about three-dimensional biomedical model with pulsatile inflow is presented to benchmark the algorithm and to demonstrate the potential applications of this method.
