Abstract:Although a promising tool for knowledge representation and reasoning, fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) still suffer from some deficiencies. First, the parameters in current FPN models, such as weight, threshold, and certainty factor do not accurately represent increasingly complex knowledge-based expert systems and do not capture the dynamic nature of fuzzy knowledge. Second, the fuzzy rules of most existing knowledge inference frameworks are static and cannot be adjusted dynamically according to variations of antecedent propositions. To address these problems, we present a new type of FPN model, dynamic adaptive fuzzy Petri nets, for knowledge representation and reasoning. We also propose a max-algebra based parallel reasoning algorithm so that the reasoning process can be implemented automatically. As illustrated by a numerical example, the proposed model can well represent the experts' diverse experience and can implement the knowledge reasoning dynamically.

Abstract:FPNs are a graphical-based knowledge representation and reasoning tool widely used in many fields for intelligent decision making. However, the traditional FPNs could not accurately represent domain experts’ uncertain and ambiguous knowledge with the increasing complexity of knowledge base systems. Additionally, the task of assessing the truth degrees of input places is limited to small-scale expert groups in current practices. In response to these problems, this chapter develops a new type of FPN model, called Pythagorean fuzzy Petri nets (PFPNs), for knowledge representation and reasoning in the large group context. Pythagorean fuzzy sets are introduced to capture imprecise and ambiguous knowledge and a large group truth determination method is proposed to get the truth degrees of input places with massive data. Finally, an application example regarding security risk assessment is given to show the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed PFPNs.

Abstract:Fuzzy knowledge representation and reasoning is one of the key research subjects of artificial intelligence with uncertainty. Currently, fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) cannot describe fuzzy nondeterministic knowledge based on the variable fuzzy criterion clearly. To solve this problem, we present an extended FPN model based on the qualitative mapping and the qualitative criterion transformation. First, the mechanism and the principles of the variable fuzzy criterion under qualitative mapping are introduced. The important theoretical basis of qualitative mapping is detection and integration of perceptual attribute features. Under transition degree function and the qualitative criterion transformation, the qualitative mapping better reflects the cases in which the fuzzy membership criterion is variable. Second, we use the characteristics of the qualitative mapping to propose a structure of attribute fuzzy information granule. Based on the logic operation of fuzzy information granule, we redescribe the four fuzzy production rules which are commonly used, and obtain four kinds of fuzzy qualitative judgment rules. They can explicitly express the occurrence process of transition nodes of FPNs, which strengthens the uncertain knowledge representation ability of FPNs. The new method makes it easy to construct a learning mechanism based on cognition in FPNs.

Abstract:The two most important issues of expert systems are the acquisition of domain experts' professional knowledge and the representation and reasoning of the knowledge rules that have been identified. First, during expert knowledge acquisition processes, the domain expert panel often demonstrates different experience and knowledge from one another and produces different types of knowledge information such as complete and incomplete, precise and imprecise, and known and unknown because of its cross-functional and multidisciplinary nature. Second, as a promising tool for knowledge representation and reasoning, fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) still suffer a couple of deficiencies. The parameters in current FPN models could not accurately represent the increasingly complex knowledge-based systems, and the rules in most existing knowledge inference frameworks could not be dynamically adjustable according to propositions' variation as human cognition and thinking. In this paper, we present a knowledge acquisition and representation approach using the fuzzy evidential reasoning approach and dynamic adaptive FPNs to solve the problems mentioned above. As is illustrated by the numerical example, the proposed approach can well capture experts' diversity experience, enhance the knowledge representation power, and reason the rule-based knowledge more intelligently.

Abstract:A fuzzy Petri net (FPN) is a powerful tool to model and analyze knowledge-based systems containing vague information. This paper systematically reviews recent developments of the FPN model from the following three perspectives: knowledge representation using FPN, reasoning mechanisms using an FPN framework, and the latest industrial applications using FPN. In addition, some specific modeling and reasoning approaches to FPN to solve the 'state-explosion problem' are illustrated. Furthermore, detailed analysis of the discussed aspects are shown to reveal some interesting findings, as well as their developmental history. Finally, we present conclusions and suggestions for future research directions.

Abstract:A method of dynamic knowledge representation and reasoning based on Fuzzy Petri Nets is proposed for problems of knowledge of Fuzzy characteristics, where frequent updating of knowledge is required in an expert system. Using the data obtained from the actual environment, the parameters of the knowledge model such as weights, threshold and reliability can be adjusted by training, so the knowledge can be updated dynamically. Some useful factors of knowledge representation based on production rules and Neural Networks are integrated into the knowledge model in a clear way, with well defined meanings for parameters, and with a learning and parallel reasoning ability. The result of simulation shows that the precision of the knowledge model is improved after training.

Abstract:Through used Fuzzy Petri net to set up the knowledge representation and reasoning of the Tactics Decision Making Module of Pilot Assistant Artificial Intelligent System(PAAIS),a Fuzzy Neural Petri Network(FNPN) method whose parameters can be trained was proposed in this paper.The experimental result indicated that,the Neural Network and the Petri net combination can make the fuzzy production rule systems more effective,and also can be applied to most practical Petri net models and fuzzy systems.

Abstract:Fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) are a powerful modeling tool for the knowledge representation and reasoning of expert systems. During the past decades, a variety of models and methods have been developed to improve the performance of FPNs. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the literature on the FPN topic. The objective of this paper is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the FPN studies to generate a global picture of developments, focus areas, and research trends in this field. To achieve this goal, 272 journal articles extracted from the Web of Science over the period of 2000 to 2022 were analyzed with respect to cooperation network, co-citation network, and keyword co-occurrence network. The findings indicate that annual publication on the FPNs has increased rapidly since 2018. The cooperation network analysis shows that the most prolific authors in the area are Hu-Chen Liu from Tongji University and Victor R. L. Shen from National Taipei University. Via the co-citation network analysis, the influential authors are identified as Shyi-Ming Chen, Carl G. Looney, Tadao Murata, and the emerging research trends are obtained as "fault diagnosis", "failure mode and effect analysis", and "knowledge representation". The keyword network analysis shows that the hot research topics in the FPN area are "expert system", "knowledge representation", "fault diagnosis" and "fuzzy reasoning". Finally, according to the current research trends, possible future research directions concerning FPNs are revealed. This study provides important reference for both scholars and practitioners to grasp the research status, hot topics, and future research agenda of the FPN domain.

Abstract:Fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) are a vital modeling technique for the construction of knowledge-based systems, which have been commonly used in many fields, such as fault diagnosis, risk assessment, workflow management, and disassembly process planning. However, the conventional FPNs have been blamed for the following reasons: 1) the representation parameters in FPNs cannot precisely model experts' experience since it is difficult to manage the fuzziness and randomness of knowledge assessments simultaneously, and 2) the weight coefficients in the existing approximate reasoning algorithms are hardly enough to reflect the associated weights of reordered places. In response, we propose a new type of FPNs, called cloud reasoning Petri nets (CRPNs) based on the concept of interval clouds and the hybrid averaging operator. The cloud production rules in a knowledge-based system are modeled by CRPNs, where the truth degrees of places, the certainty factors of rules, and the thresholds of transitions are represented by interval clouds. Moreover, a matrix operation-based reasoning algorithm is proposed to improve the efficiency of calculating final truth degrees, in which both local and ordered weight coefficients are taken into consideration. Finally, a practical example concerning a power system is provided to demonstrate the usefulness and advantages of the proposed CRPN model.

Abstract:Fuzzy Petri Nets (FPN) is a powerful modeling tool for knowledge-based systems based on fuzzy production rules. But the lack of learning mechanism is the weakness of fuzzy systems. In this paper, a expert system modeling method called Fuzzy Neural Petri Nets (FNPN) is proposed. This model has both the features of a fuzzy Petri net and learning ability of a neural network. Being trained, a FNPN model can be used for dynamic knowledge representation and inference. The back propagation algorithm of neural networks is introduced into FPN. And the parameters of fuzzy production rules in FNPN can be learned and trained by this means. At the same time, different layers can be learned and trained independently. An example is included as an illustration. It is proved in this paper that the FNPN has powerful reasoning ability and adaptation ability. At the same time it can be regarded as a conceptual and practical artificial intelligence tool for the expert system.

Abstract:Fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) are an important modeling tool for knowledge representation and reasoning, which have been extensively used in a lot of fields. However, the conventional FPN models have been criticized as having many shortcomings in the literature. Many different models have been suggested to enhance the performance of FPNs, but deficiencies still exist in these models. First, various types of uncertain knowledge information provided by domain experts are very hard to be modeled by the existing FPN models. Second, the traditional FPNs determine the results of knowledge reasoning using the min, max, and product operators, which may not work well in many practical applications. In this paper, we propose a new type of FPN model based on intuitionistic fuzzy sets and ordered weighted averaging operators to deal with the problems and improve the effectiveness of the conventional FPNs. Moreover, a max-algebra-based reasoning algorithm is developed in order to implement the intuitionistic fuzzy reasoning formally and automatically. Finally, a case study concerning fault diagnosis of aircraft generator is presented to demonstrate the proposed intuitionistic FPN model. Numerical experiments show that the new FPN model is feasible and quite effective for knowledge representation and reasoning of intuitionistic fuzzy expert systems.

Abstract:Fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) are a useful instrument for modelling expert systems to conduct knowledge representation and reasoning. Many studies have been carried out for improving the performance of FPNs in terms of their accurate representation of knowledge and power of approximate reasoning. Nevertheless, the current representation methods with FPNs are unable to handle the uncertain linguistic knowledge given by domain experts and the reliability of their judgments. In addition, the existing reasoning algorithms have no way to capture the interrelationship of the propositions with the same output transition. Therefore, we present a new type of FPNs, called 2-dimensional uncertain linguistic Petri nets (2DULPNs). The 2-dimensional uncertain linguistic variables (2DULVs) and Choquet integral are combined for knowledge representation and reasoning for the first time. The truth degrees of propositions, thresholds and certainty values of linguistic production rules are denoted as 2DULVs. Some new aggregated operators based on Choquet integral are proposed and used in the approximate reasoning to capture the interactions among antecedent propositions. Finally, an equipment fault diagnosis example is provided to illustrate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed 2DULPN model.

Abstract:Fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) have been applied in many fields as a potential modeling tool for knowledge representation and reasoning. However, there exist many deficiencies in the conventional FPNs when applied in the real world. In this paper, we present a new type of FPN, called picture fuzzy Petri nets (PFPNs), to overcome the shortcomings and improve the effectiveness of the traditional FPNs. First, the proposed PFPN model adopts the picture fuzzy sets (PFSs), characterized by degrees of positive membership, neutral membership, and negative membership, to depict human expert knowledge. As a result, the uncertainty, due to vagueness, imprecision, partial information, etc., can be well-handled in knowledge representation. Second, a similarity degree-based expert weighting method is offered for consensus reaching processes in knowledge acquisition. The proposed PFPN model can manage the conflicts and inconsistencies among expert evaluations in knowledge parameters, thus, making the obtained knowledge rules more accurate. Finally, a realistic example of a gene regulatory network is provided to illustrate the feasibility and practicality of the proposed PFPN model.

Abstract:Fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) are a promising modeling tool for knowledge representation and reasoning. As a new type of FPNs, bipolar fuzzy Petri nets (BFPNs) are developed in this article to overcome the shortcomings and improve the performance of traditional FPNs. In order to depict expert knowledge more accurately, the BFPN model adopts bipolar fuzzy sets (BFSs), which are characterized by the satisfaction degree to property and the satisfaction degree to its counter property, to represent knowledge parameters. Because of the increasing scale of expert systems, a concurrent hierarchical reasoning algorithm is introduced to simplify the structure of BFPNs and reduce the computation complexity of knowledge reasoning algorithm. In addition, a large group expert weighting method is proposed for knowledge acquisition by taking experts’ non-cooperative behaviors into account. A realistic case of risk index evaluation system is presented to show the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed BFPNs. The result shows that the new BFPN model is feasible and efficient for knowledge representation and acquisition.

Abstract:Fuzzy Petri net (FPN) is a powerful modeling tool for fuzzy production rules based knowledge systems. But it is lack of learning mechanism, which is the main weakness while modeling uncertain knowledge systems. Fuzzy neural Petri net (FNPN) is proposed in this paper, in which fuzzy neuron components are introduced into FPN as a sub-net model of FNPN. For neuron components in FNPN, back propagation (BP) learning algorithm of neural network is introduced. And the parameters of fuzzy production rules in FNPN neurons can be learnt and trained by this means. At the same time, different neurons on different layers can be learnt and trained independently. The FNPN proposed in this paper is meaningful for Petri net models and fuzzy systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved modeling algorithm based on modified fuzzy Petri net for fuzzy reasoning. The asynchronized property of token was neglected due to simple structures of fuzzy Petri net models for fuzzy reasoning in literatures. The property will cause uncertain results of reasoning for complex problems. The modeling algorithm aims mainly at solving this issue based on fuzzy Petri net whose arc power function, transition function and place capacity are modified. Compared with existing fuzzy Petri nets, the modified fuzzy Petri net can be used to reason according to inherent firing mechanism without additional control mechanism. The algorithm uses arc power and module replacement to deal with reasoning uncertainty and structure conflict. The validity of the algorithm for forward/backward reasoning is proved for acyclic fuzzy rule-based systems. An example is given to illustrate the validity of the proposed algorithm for reasoning.

Abstract:AbstractIn previous studies, fuzzy Petri nets (FPNs) have been used for knowledge representation and reasoning in various areas. However, the traditional FPNs have limited abilities in representing uncertain knowledge and conducting approximate reasoning when applied in practical situations. In addition, the knowledge parameters in existing FPNs are usually given by a small number of experts. To address these issues, a grey reasoning Petri net (GRPN) model is proposed in this article for knowledge representation and reasoning under large group environment. In this model, grey production rules in an expert system are modeled by the GRPNs, where grey numbers are used to represent the truth degrees of places, certainty values, and the thresholds on output arcs of transitions. The grey weighted Bonferroni mean operator is adopted as a substitute of the classical min and max operators in the developed grey reasoning algorithm to capture the interrelationships of input places and the interrelationships between transitions. Furthermore, a large group decision-making method is introduced for obtaining the knowledge parameters of GRPNs based on the grey correlation analysis. Finally, the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed GRPN model is demonstrated by a real-world risk evaluation example.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of determining all parameters of fuzzy production rules in building a Fuzzy Petri Net(FPN),by introducing a new FPN reasoning mechanism,this paper uses virtual places and virtual transitions to construct layered FPN model.Its realization does not depend on experiential data,and the requirements for primary input are not critical.Simulation experimental result shows that for the input data that do not include training samples,the reasoning mechanism possesses strong generalizing capability and self-adjustion.
