Abstract:There has been increasing interest in exploring the impact of human behavior on financial market dynamics. One of the important related questions is whether attention from society can lead to significant stock price movements or even abnormal returns. To answer the question, we develop a new measurement of social attention, named periodic cumulative degree of social attention , by simultaneously considering the individual influence and the information propagation in social networks. Based on the vast social network data, we evaluate the new attention measurement by testing its significance in explaining future abnormal returns. In addition, we test the forecasting ability of social attention for stock price shocks, defined by the cumulative abnormal returns. Our results provide significant evidence to support the intercorrelated relationship between the social attention and future abnormal returns. The outperformance of the new approach in predicting price shocks is also confirmed by comparison with several benchmark methods.

Abstract:Many recent studies on finance and social networks discovered that investor's attention is correlated to the financial market movement in terms of the price shocks. Following related findings, a significant and challenging problem is to forecast the direction of the market movement based on vast social media activities. Appropriately processing social networks data and developing models to capture investor's attention on stocks would effectively help financial forecasting. In this paper, we propose and then apply a price shocks forecasting framework, which simultaneously takes the influence of social network users and their opinions about stocks into consideration. Specifically, we develop a new method to estimate social attention to stocks by influence modeling and sentiment analysis. Then, we use it in price shocks forecasting, which we formalize as a classification problem. We also consider the effect of historical market information on the market movement. Finally, we evaluate our framework based on a series of tests on the Chinese stock data. Our results show that the newly proposed measurement of social attention effectively improves the forecasting power of our framework.

Abstract:The herd instinct is a common feature of human society and is frequently encountered in a myriad of other human social interaction including entertainment, fashion, and the adoption of new gadgets. Indeed, social influence, taking account of others' actions in one's decisions, is ubiquitous in our daily life. With the growing prevalence of crowdfunding investments, an increasing number of studies are currently focused on how social influences impact such behavior. Moreover, only a few studies have examined its neural correlates and the value of evaluating social influence as a possible predictor of herd behavior especially regarding crowdfunding. The present study aims to parse the neural processing of social influences on crowdfunding investment and examine whether neural signals can be correlated with an individuals' willingness to invest. Our results demonstrate that the greater ones' choice deviates from the overall group judgement, there is a resulting increased deflection of the feedback related negativity (FRN). However, the averaged and single trial analysis reveal that the subsequent P300, rather than the feedback related negativity, reflects the magnitude of social influence on individual behavior. Single trial analysis of the EEG data shows that, in addition to the behavioral manipulation, the deflection of the P300 is a robust signal, which is associated with the behavioral adjustment following an individual's awareness of the group opinion at the trial-by-trial level. The current study freshly extends the growing literature on social influences on decision making stemming from another's action to the new investment possibilities of crowdfunding investment and notably observes that the P300 component at the outcome stage evidently is associated with the behavioral-decision making shift evoked by following the herd.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of usage of social network, the patterns, the scales, and the rate of information exchange have brought profound impacts on research and practice in finance. One important topic is the stock market efficiency analysis. Traditional schemes in finance focus on identifying significant abnormal returns triggered by important events. However, those events are merely identified by regular financial announcements such as mergers, equity issuances, and financial reports. Related data-driven approaches mainly focus on developing trading strategies using social media data, while the results are usually lack of theoretical explanations. In this paper, we fill the gap between the usage of social media data and financial theories. We propose a Degree of Social Attention (DSA) framework for stock analysis based on influence propagation model. Specifically, we define the self-influence for users in a social network and the DSA for stocks. A recursive process is also designed for dynamic value updating. Furthermore, we provide two modified approaches to reduce the computational cost. Our testing results from the Chinese stock market suggest that the proposed framework effectively captures stock abnormal returns based on the related social media data, and DSA is verified to be a key factor to link social media activities to the stock market.
Is Attention Contagious? Estimating The Spillover Effect Of Investor Attention In Digital Networks

Abstract:This study constructs networks based on visitors' online co-searches of firms to explore the economic value of visible network linkages on digital platforms. To achieve this, we investigate whether exogenous attention shocks of some firms can diffuse through network linkages and spill over to proximate firms. We design a quasi-experiment by leveraging the attention shocks based on multiple external sources and employ an identification strategy based on difference-in-differences models with propensity score-based matching. We find strong evidence on the existence of attention spillover. Both the abnormal return and risk of neighboring firms will significantly increase after "catching" the contagion. Besides, the spillover effect persists only in a short time window and decays over time and the distance from the sources of attention shocks. Finally, we find heterogeneous spillover effects across firms: firms with small size or negative public sentiment are more susceptible to the contagion.

Abstract:Information from microblogs is gaining increasing attention from researchers interested in analyzing fluctuations in stock markets. Behavioral financial theory draws on social psychology to explain some of the irrational behaviors associated with financial decisions to help explain some of the fluctuations. In this study we argue that social media users who demonstrate an interest in finance can offer insights into ways in which irrational behaviors may affect a stock market. To test this, we analyzed all the data collected over a 3‐month period in 2011 from Tencent Weibo (one of the largest microblogging websites in China). We designed a social influence (SI)‐based Tencent finance‐related moods model to simulate investors' irrational behaviors, and designed a Tencent Moods‐based Stock Trend Analysis (TM_STA) model to detect correlations between Tencent moods and the Hushen‐300 index (one of the most important financial indexes in China). Experimental results show that the proposed method can help explain the data fluctuation. The findings support the existing behavioral financial theory, and can help to understand short‐term rises and falls in a stock market. We use behavioral financial theory to further explain our findings, and to propose a trading model to verify the proposed model.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of public attention on analyst visits. To establish causality, we use Hurun Rich List as an exogenous shock to identify the impact of public attention. Using a difference-in-difference approach, we find that public attention significantly enhances the number of analyst visits. This effect is more pronounced among firms with complex information environments and higher future uncertainty. Our findings indicate that public attention affects analyst visits through influencing investor demand for analyst services. Further analysis reveals that analyst visits improve the accuracy of analysts' forecasts. We also find that the rich listing events indirectly leads to policy changes or the introduction of new policies. Overall, our findings highlight the importance of public attention to the firms' information environment.

Abstract:Existing models of financial market prices typically assume that investors are informed with economic data and that wealth maximization motivates them. This paper considers the social dimensions of investing and the effect that this additional motivation has on the evolution of prices in a multi-agent model of an equity market. Agents in this model represent both economically informed investors and socially motivated investors who base their decision to invest solely on the popularity of the investment activity itself. The new model captures in a primitive but important way the notion of frenzy associated with speculative manias and panics, and it offers further insight into such anomalies as market bubbles and crashes.

Abstract:Electronic and digital trading models have made stock trading more accessible and convenient, leading to exponential growth in trading data. With a wealth of trading data available, researchers have found opportunities to extract valuable insights by uncovering patterns in stock price movements and market dynamics. Deep learning models are increasingly being employed for stock price prediction. While neural networks offer superior computational capabilities compared with traditional statistical methods, their results often lack interpretability, limiting their utility in explaining stock price volatility and investment behavior. To address this challenge, we propose a causality‐based method that incorporates a multivariate approach, integrating news event attention sequences and sentiment index sequences. The goal is to capture the intricate and multifaceted relationships among news events, media sentiment, and stock prices. We illustrate the application of this proposed approach using a Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone global event database, demonstrating its benefits through the analysis of attention sequences and media sentiment index sequences for news events across various categories. This research not only identifies promising directions for further exploration but also offers insights with implications for informed investment decisions.

Abstract:Recent works have shown that social media platforms are able to influence the trends of stock price movements. However, existing works have major focused on the U.S. stock market and lacked attention to certain emerging countries such as China, where retail investors dominate the market. In this regard, as retail investors are prone to be influenced by news or other social media, psychological and behavioral features extracted from social media platforms are thought to well predict stock price movements in the China's market. Recent advances in the investor social network in China enables the extraction of such features from web-scale data. In this paper, on the basis of tweets from Xueqiu, a popular Chinese Twitter-like social platform specialized for investors, we analyze features with regard to collective sentiment and perception on stock relatedness and predict stock price movements by employing nonlinear models. The features of interest prove to be effective in our experiments.

Abstract:With the rise of search engines,stock search volume has been well recognized as an important indicator of investor attention.In addition,stock price synchronicity also attracts many researchers' attention.To jointly consider these two phenomenons,this paper analyses the relationship between search volume of relevant stock and stock price.Unlike previous research that discusses the relationship at market level,this paper analyses the relationship at individual stock level.An after temporal associative analysis is applied to discover patterns between relevant stock volume variations and subsequent stock price changes,and trading strategy is further designed.To verify the proposed trading strategy,experiments are conducted on China A-share stocks under specific experimental setups.Results show that trading strategies which consider the relationship between search volumes and prices perform better than strategies without considering the relationship.Further,stock level strategy performs better than market level strategy.
Does Investor Attention Affect Stock Trading and Returns? Evidence from Publicly Listed Firms in China

Abstract:Limited attention is an inevitable outcome of voluminous information. Investors facing a large number of stocks can only focus on a few and endeavor to have access to in-depth knowledge. Since the retrieved knowledge would affect investors' decisions, investor attention becomes a factor in affecting stock returns and trading volumes. Through using 890,840 firm-week observations of Chinese listed firms between 2011 and 2018 as a sample, we document that investor attention, measured by abnormal Baidu search volume index (ASVI), is positively associated with contemporaneous stock returns but with a complete reversal in the subsequent period; and ASVI exhibits a positive link with trading volumes without a subsequent reversal, but its predictable ability becomes weaker in subsequent weeks. The effect of ASVI is pronounced for the ChiNext market and firms with higher level of financial transparency. We further find investor attention has been driven by five corporate events including earnings announcements, management forecasts, financial analysts following, mergers and acquisitions and dividend payout. This paper contributes to the theory of limited attention through using a direct measure of attention, providing evidence on its economic consequences in the Chinese stock market and exploring specific events that drive investor attention.

Abstract:The present investor sentiment detection relies mainly on the data from security exchange market, such as the discount of closed-end fund, the premium rate on the first day of IPO and other indexes. Although they can directly substitute for investor sentiment, those indexes lack objectivity and timeliness, and thus cannot provide precise evaluation over investor sentiment. With the development of information technology, people gradually engage in recreational activities and make friends via the Internet, and express their own opinions based on the on-line information. In this regard, the influence from investor focus and investor sentiment in the on-line social media upon stock market has been explored from the perspective of big data on line. According to analysis on investor sentiment and dynamics concerning stock market earnings, those two indexes are positively correlated and the stock market fluctuates sharply in a short period of time. Sound countermeasures should be taken to enhance the safeguard against such fluctuations.

Abstract:As the rising of social networks,represented by Micro-blog and we chat,in China,a full message dissemination and diffusion transmission chain has formed during the new media era,and profound influences have been made on the habits of individual cognitive learning,investment philosophy,behavioral patterns,and asset prices patterns in financial markets.In the scenario of the new media,this study investigates the correlation between micro-blog information quality and stock price synchronicity,taking the financial social networks platform as the breakthrough point.Based on the three dimensions of information attention,network reliability,and update frequency,the paper first constructs a index system for network information quality,then theoretically and empirically studies the influence of the social network's information quality on stock price synchronicity.The findings suggest the connection between the two is clear negative and U-shaped relations.Our results provide evidences from Chinese stock market to confirm the validity of social networks on stock price synchronicity.

Abstract:This study explores the relationship between stocks' change in salience (CS) and the cross-section of stock returns. We find that the change in salience can negatively predict future stock returns. Investors, attracted by salient attributes of choices, overestimate prominent rising trends in stock historical return performance and extrapolate, leading stocks with prominent rising trends to be overpriced and earning lower subsequent returns. In terms of potential mechanisms, we find that costly arbitrage and lottery preference are two underlying mechanisms behind the mispricing of CS. The CS effect is more pronounced among stocks with greater costly arbitrage and greater lottery preference. Moreover, both institutional and individual investors are shown to generate distortions of expectations induced by salient thinking. Our findings are robust after considering common risk factors, shell contamination, short-term reversals, the prospect theory, and investor attention.

Abstract:How the online social media, like Twitter or its variant Weibo, interacts with the stock market and whether it can be a convincing proxy to predict the stock market have been debated for years, especially for China. As the traditional theory in behavioral finance states, the individual emotions can influence decision-makings of investors, it is reasonable to further explore these controversial topics systematically from the perspective of online emotions, which are richly carried by massive tweets in social media. Through thorough studies on over 10 million stock-relevant tweets and 3 million investors from Weibo, it is revealed that inexperienced investors with high emotional volatility are more sensible to the market fluctuations than the experienced or institutional ones, and their dominant occupation also indicates that the Chinese market might be more emotional as compared to its western counterparts. Then both correlation analysis and causality test demonstrate that five attributes of the stock market in China can be competently predicted by various online emotions, like disgust, joy, sadness and fear. Specifically, the presented prediction model significantly outperforms the baseline model, including the one taking purely financial time series as input features, on predicting five attributes of the stock market under the $K$-means discretization. We also employ this prediction model in the scenario of realistic online application and its performance is further testified.

Abstract:Social media serves as a crucial channel for investors to acquire asset-related information while also facilitating emotional contagion through social connections. However, the association between the emotional contagion on social networks and asset prices remains unclear. We examine the relationship between market returns and disseminated emotion resulting from emotion contagion in a social network of more than 2.5 million investors in a finance-specific forum. Investors' emotions are detected from their short-text posts based on a novel classification framework that leverages the traditional dictionary-based method and the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT). The potential of investors in emotional contagion is approximated in terms of a global metric of Collective Influence measured daily from a large-scale social network. We find that disseminated emotion is negatively associated with next-day returns, highlighting the importance of the network effect in reshaping the process of investors' emotional contagion and subsequently influencing asset prices. Our findings suggest that understanding and monitoring emotional contagion in social networks can aid in predicting market movements, and policymakers can leverage these insights to enhance market stability by addressing investors' psychological and social aspects.

Abstract:We find that a noticeable fraction of investors mainly purchases attention-grabbing stocks. We define investors with such preference as attention-based buyers. Based on Survey data of Chinese individual stock investors, we find that the overall earnings of attention-based buyers decreased by about 4% compared with other investors. Employing two-stage least squares (2SLS) regression we find the OLS regression underestimates the decrease in return. Moreover, attention-based buyers are more susceptible to news and are more inclined to use online-based information as the main reference. Attention-based buyers are more speculative, and demonstrate strong disposition effect. The incapability of investing and loss in return are all attributable to these characteristics. Findings in this article are helpful to the understanding of the typical behavior bias of Chinese individual stock investors.

Abstract:For both investors and policymakers, forecasting the stock market is essential as it serves as an indicator of economic well-being. To this end, we harness the power of social media data, a rich source of public sentiment, to enhance the accuracy of stock market predictions. Diverging from conventional methods, we pioneer an approach that integrates sentiment analysis, macroeconomic indicators, search engine data, and historical prices within a multi-attention deep learning model, masterfully decoding the complex patterns inherent in the data. We showcase the state-of-the-art performance of our proposed model using a dataset, specifically curated by us, for predicting stock market movements and volatility.

Abstract:With the development of the social network, the interaction between investors in stock market became more fast and convenient. Thus, investor sentiment which can influence their investment decisions may be quickly spread and magnified through the network, and to a certain extent the stock market can be affected. This paper collected the user comments data from a popular professional social networking site of China stock market called Xueqiu, then the investor sentiment data can be obtained through semantic analysis. The dynamic analysis on relationship between investor sentiment and stock market is proposed based on Thermal Optimal Path (TOP) method. The results show that the sentiment data was not always leading over stock market price, and it can be used to predict the stock price only when the stock has high investor attention.
