Abstract:To further elucidate the relationship between the growth stress and cracking of KDP (KH2PO4, potassium dihydrogen phosphate) crystals of different sizes, a three-dimensional finite element calculation was conducted to analyze the growth stress of KDP single crystals grown from Z-plate seeds with varying cooling rates. The mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), between the cap region and its close vicinity, and among the transparent region, was taken into account. The results indicate that when the cap region is a solid region (when the seed was regenerated with a cooling rate of 0.1 °C/day), the difference in material properties between the cap region and its close vicinity, especially the CTE mismatch along the a-axis, is the main reason of the high stresses. When the cap region is a box-like structure filled with solution (when the seed was regenerated with a cooling rate of 0.3 °C/day), the calculated stress is in proportion to the CTE gradient of the transparent region. Under both models, the stresses induced from an incremental CTE value (from the cap region to the growth front) are greater than those calculated from a diminishing CTE value, implying that the impurities reduce the CTE of KDP crystals, causing the crystals to crack more easily. Despite the maximum stresses inside the crystals changing slightly with an increase in crystal size, the decreased fracture stress of large brittle crystals leads to a higher cracking risk in a large-sized crystal.

Abstract:KDP and ADP crystals doped with different concentrations of Fe 3+ ions were grown by the "point seed" technique and some KDP crystal samples were annealed. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and slow positron beam technique were applied to investigate the types and distributions of the defects with different states of charges for KDP and ADP crystals. It was found that the quality of the prismatic sector was better than that of the pyramidal sector, although Fe 3+ was mainly enriched in the prismatic sector. The types and content of defects in the pyramidal sector were relatively larger. ADP crystals showed better structural stability, with fewer defects than KDP crystals. This might be one of the reasons for the higher damage threshold of ADP crystals. The results also indicated that thermal annealing could decompose large-size defects into small-size ones to improve KDP crystal quality. However, it could not reduce the influence of Fe 3+ , such as causing light absorption at 220–300 nm. In addition, the Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy were implemented to illustrate the change in the structure and properties after doping in KDP crystals. Notably, this work focused on the types and distributions of microscopic defects, which would be significant for the crystal growth and quality improvement.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies, hydrogen vacancies and potassium vacancies are common intrinsic point defects in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals and can combine to form cluster defects. In this work, the stability of V O 2+ + 2V K − , V O 2+ + V K − + V H − and V O 2+ + 2V H − cluster defects, as well as the defect-induced structural and electronic properties and optical absorption in KDP crystals, is investigated by hybrid density functional theory. Cluster defects composed of oxygen vacancies and their nearest hydrogen vacancies or potassium vacancies can be stable in KDP crystals. V O 2+ + 2V K − , V O 2+ + V K − + V H − and V O 2+ + 2V H − cluster defects introduce large relaxation to the O–H bonds linking to the PO 4 group in KDP crystals, and the structural instability of the crystal could be quickly enhanced with the increase of these cluster defects. This structural instability is detrimental to the laser induced damage thresholds of KDP crystals. The band gaps of KDP crystals are shortened to 6.6 eV, 6.4 eV, and 6.4 eV by V O 2+ + 2V K − cluster defects, V O 2+ + V K − + V H − cluster defects and V O 2+ + 2V H − cluster defects, respectively. Under a 355 nm laser, this shortening may cause two-photon absorption, resulting in the reduction of the laser induced damage threshold of the KDP crystal. The electron transition between oxygen vacancies and hydrogen vacancies introduces an extra absorption peak at 6.4 eV. This work provides a good basis for deeply understanding the structural and electronic properties and optical absorption of oxygen vacancy cluster defects in the KDP crystal.

Abstract:The oxygen vacancy (VO) and interstitial oxygen (Oi) are the easiest formed intrinsic point defects that could decrease the laser damage thresholds of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and its analog ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP). In this work, we have grown KDP and ADP crystals by traditional temperature reduction method and "point-seed" rapid growth technique, and proved the existence of the oxygen defects by position annihilation technique. Based on the first-principle calculations, the mechanisms of the structural breakdown and the optical absorption induced by the VO and Oi defects in both crystals have been investigated. It is found that VO2+ and VO0 defects are the dominant point defects that attribute to the collapse of the KDP crystal structure and the weak extra optical absorption at about 155 nm. The higher laser damage threshold of ADP than KDP mainly comes from a mass of hydrogen bonds in ADP crystals. They have found to play an important role in stabilizing the skeleton structure of ADP by forming the strong O-O peroxyl bridge structure and by preventing the electron transitions between and within the NH4 and the PO4 groups. It is therefore suggested to decrease the concentration of VO defects during the growth progress in order to improve the crystal performance under laser irradiation.

Abstract:The effect of defect cluster (Ca K -Si P ) on the lattice distortion and electronic structure of potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals (KDP) has been studied using first principles. By comparing the lattice distortion of defect clusters with that of isolated defects Ca K and Si P , we find that the lattice distortion of defect clusters is small and the structural stability is high. Therefore, we speculate that the existence of defect clusters is conducive to the stability of crystal structure. The defect Si P introduces defect states in the forbidden band, and the defect Ca K introduces a new absorption band. However, the simultaneous presence of the defect cluster does not introduce new defect states in the forbidden band and only leads to a small change in the bandgap width. It does not induce additional light absorption in the visible range. So, we predict that the defect cluster (Ca K -Si P ) has little effect on the irradiation damage threshold of KDP crystals compared with the isolated point defect.

Abstract:We carried out ab initio calculations to study the atomic configuration, band structure and optical absorption of the lattice misalignment structure (LMS) in a subsurface layer of a machined KH 2 PO 4 (KDP) crystal. By varying the different degrees of misalignment, the changes in the corresponding atomic position and bond and energy are obtained, and their correlations are analysed in detail. The results indicate that in the LMS evolution, the variation in the proton distribution around the oxygen atoms plays an important role, and many local stable LMSs appear. Interestingly, at a certain misalignment value, the total system energy of the local stable LMS is near that of a perfect KDP crystal. For some local stable LMSs, the electronic and optical properties related to the laser damage threshold (LDT) of KDP are further studied. The results show that in comparison with a perfect KDP crystal, the band gaps of local stable LMSs at some certain misalignment values become narrow, and their optical absorption curves produce an obvious redshift. These facts demonstrate that the emergence of the LMS could have a significant impact on the optical absorption of the KDP material and thus affect the LDT of KDP under certain working conditions.
Theoretical Analysis of Electronic Structure and Optical Properties of Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate Crystal Affected by [011] Screw Dislocation

Abstract:The atomic configurations, energetics, electronic structures, and optical properties of [011] screw dislocation in the KDP crystal have been analyzed by using density functional theory with Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof and HSE06 functionals. The results have confirmed that the [011] screw dislocation reduces the band gap and introduces the intermediate states into the forbidden gap, which are principally derived from 2p (O)–3p (P) hybridization. Extra optical absorption peaks are also introduced at 170, 220, and 270 nm, which may be attributed to the dehydration process, and PO2 radical emerged near the dislocation core in the KDP crystal. The [011] screw dislocations will contribute to a large nonlinear absorption, enhance the crystal to absorb more laser energy, and decrease the laser-induced damage threshold of the KDP crystal. These findings will also contribute to our understanding of the root of the extra 270 nm absorption peak in practice and provide a basis for methods to improve laser-induced damage threshold of KDP or DKDP in frequency conversion devices.

Abstract:We present anab initiomolecular dynamics study of the thermal stability and dynamics behaviors of lattice misalignment structures (LMSs) in the subsurface layers of KH2PO4(KDP) crystals. The dehydration process at the atomic scale is observed in the LMS system, which is the same as that in a perfect KDP crystal. However, the paths entering the dehydration process are various. The interesting result is that compared with a perfect KDP crystal, many new paths appear in the LMS system, and even in the same paths, the dehydration is more likely to happen in the LMS system. This leads to a dramatic increase in the dehydration numbers in the LMS system, for which the reasons are given in terms of structural deformation and/or uneven distribution of protons. The results elucidate the underlying atomic mechanism of the effect of LMS defects on the thermal stability of KDP material.

Abstract:The Fe3+ ion is the most common impurity ions in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and it can combine with hydrogen vacancies to form cluster defects which may lead to optical damage of KDP crystal. In this study, the effect of FeK2++2VH- cluster on crystal structural, electronic and optical properties of KDP crystal are investigated by the hybrid density functional theory and the mechanism of Fe3+ ion lowing the laser induced damage threshold of KDP crystal is analyzed. The damage of FeK2+ + 2VH- cluster defect to the crystal structure of KDP crystal is greater than hydrogen vacancies, due to the large lattice relaxation introduced by FeK2+ defect. The FeK2+ defect introduce two defect states (at 2.4 eV and 6.6 eV) into the band gap of KDP crystal, and the absorption peaks at around 278nm in the xy plane. When FeK2+ + 2VH- cluster defects form, hydrogen vacancies induce the increase of the charge density around O atom bonded to FeK2+, which slightly alters the interaction of the electronic states of FeK2+ and O atom. These cluster defects have an influence on electronic and optical properties through the charge transfer in the xy plane in KDP crystal. This work provides a good suggestion to improve the laser induced damage threshold of KDP crystal by decreasing the concentration of the cluster defects in KDP crystal.

Abstract:Intentionally adding select ions such as Al3+ could be helpful in controlling the crystal habit of KDP crystal for high yield of optics. The study of how Al3+ ions affect crystal quality can provide a basis for selecting an appropriate doping level without negatively affecting the optical properties of crystals. Here, the influence of Al3+ ions on the crystal structure and properties of KDP crystals have been investigated by using first-principles calculations. Theoretical calculations show that Al3+ ions mainly replace K sites in KDP crystals and could complex with intrinsic VH− point defects to form AlK2+ + 2VH− cluster defects. The linear absorption spectra indicate that the presence of Al3+ ions has minimal impact on the linear absorption of KDP crystals, aligning well with the experimental findings. And Al3+ ions could cause a slight shortening of the band gap of KDP crystals. However, these ions could bring significant deformations of O-H bonds. As the concentration of Al3+ ions increase, more O-H bonds linking to PO4 groups are distorted in KDP crystals. As a result, the structural instability could be fast enhanced with increasing the defect concentration. Therefore, high concentrations of Al3+ ions could cause the instability of the crystal structure, which finally affects the laser-induced damage resistance of the KDP crystals. This manuscript contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the physical mechanisms by which different impurity ions affect the optical properties of KDP crystals.

Abstract:Potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH 2 PO 4 : KDP) crystals are extremely important nonlinear optical crystals with high laser damage thresholds, and are used as frequency doubling and switching devices in inertial confinement fusion. In the present work, the effect of transition metal ion doping on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of KDP crystals are systematically investigated by using first-principles calculations based on density generalized theory. Our results show that the pure KDP has a band gap of 5.65 eV, which is significantly reduced to 1.37 eV for the doped Mn. Fe-doped KDP crystals show half-metallic properties with 100% spin polarization, while Mn-doped KDP show semiconductor properties. For the case of two transition metal doping, the formation energy of Fe ion defects is smaller than that of Mn defects. Therefore, Fe ion defects are more likely to form than in Mn-doped KDP. The maximum energy loss of pure KDP is 25.82 eV, while, when doped with Mn, the energy loss shifts to 25.56 eV, and, when doped with Fe, the energy loss is reduced to 25.14 eV. With the increase of the radius of the doped ions, the peak experiences an obvious red shift. The same results are expected to provide theoretical guidance for the fabrication of KDP crystals.

Abstract:The unavoidable surface defects on the practical processed potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals, especially the most common protuberance defects, which are prone to damage under intense laser irradiation, seriously limit the application of KDP optics in laser fusion facilities. In this work, a defect-induced laser damage explosion model that couples the electromagnetic field and stress field was constructed to reproduce the dynamic damage process and reveal the laser-induced damage mechanisms innovatively. First, the near-field optical modulation to incident lasers was considered to describe the effect of structural parameters of surface defects on the optical transmission performance. A multi-physics field coupled failure model was then established for the first time to explore the laser damage mechanism through the dynamic behaviors of laser damage that reproduced by this model. It was proved that the protuberance defects on KDP crystal surface would lead to severe laser damage with the characteristics of large transverse spalling and longitudinal cracks due to the Rayleigh and stress waves, which well agrees with the results of laser damage experiments. The established damage model is capable of revealing the hazards of protuberance defects, and providing effective guidance for the suppression of surface defects introduced in the optical ultra-precision machining processes.

Abstract:Built on the DO3 crystal structure, this study examines how adjusting atomic spacing, atomic number, and atomic position affects stress, atomic magnetic moment, and energy parameters in defective crystals relative to their original no-load state. The aim is to scrutinize the mechanisms underlying stress generation and elucidate the alterations in crystal properties through computational analysis, coupled with an exploration of the energy band structure and electronic density of states. The research indicates that alterations like removing atoms, changing atomic states, and stretching result in stress variations similar in magnitude to the original state. However, compressed and added atomic states lead to significant stress changes, with stress levels up to dozens of times higher than those caused by other defects. This underscores the importance of avoiding such states during material production and manufacturing. Among various defects, the change atomic states have a minimal impact on atomic magnetism, while other defects significantly affect crystal magnetism, leading to fluctuations exceeding 30%. Additionally, defects in the crystal result in notable changes in energy band distribution and electronic density of states compared to the original state, providing a method to evaluate stress in the crystal. This study enhances our understanding of how crystal defects impact internal stress and magnetic properties. It serves as a foundation for future studies on mesoscopic and macroscopic defects, offering insights that could guide the design and development of defect-free materials with reduced stress.

Abstract:Potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals have excellent optical properties such as high nonlinear conversion efficiency, superior photoelectric and piezoelectric properties, transparency in a wide range of optical spectra, and good optical homogeneity. Therefore, KDP crystals have been used in many advanced fields, such as in the laser ignition facilities as large aperture crystals for optical switching and frequency conversion. However, extensive trials in the past decades showed that a KDP crystal is an extremely difficult-to-handle material for its high sensitivity to external stresses and environmental conditions, such as contact stresses, temperature variation and moisture invasion. It is also a soft material yet easy to fracture. A critical challenge is that it is unclear about the underlying physics of the damages which have been frequently observed after the ultra-precision surfacing of an optical KDP lens. As a result, when it is used in a Pockels photoelectric switch in a high-density laser system, for instance, its optical performance (e.g., its laser-induced damage threshold) is unexpectedly low. These have hindered significantly the development of high performance laser systems. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review on the critical integrity issues of KDP components and their characterization methods, from the points of view of microstructure, micro/nano-mechanics, deformation mechanisms and laser-induced damage associated with the most commonly used surfacing technology––ultra-precision machining.

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) bands from potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals are studied by time-resolved PL spectroscopy. KDP crystals irradiated at a laser fluence of 11.5 J/cm2 are found to have the highest probability of phosphorus–oxygen hole center defects and the lowest probability of phosphorus-oxygen electric center defects, in contrast to the probabilities of these defects for KDP crystals irradiated at 9.0 J/cm2. The probabilities of these two defects occurring in retired components are found to be intermediate between those for crystals irradiated at the two different fluences. The two types of defects may result from two different mechanisms and may interconvert under certain conditions. Thus, there are differences between the defects in KDP crystals irradiated at a high laser fluence and those in retired components.

Abstract:To enable an exploration of the initiation mechanism of nanosecond laser damage on a potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) surface, a defect-assisted energy deposition model is developed that involves light intensity enhancement and a sub-band gap energy level structure. The simulations provide an explanation on why the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the KDP crystal is two orders of magnitude lower than the theoretical value. The model is verified by use of the transient images that appear during the laser damage. In addition, the dimensions of the "dangerous" surface defects that are the most sensitive to the laser damage are proposed. This work enables clarification on the initial energy deposition (IED) and initiation mechanism of the nanosecond laser damage caused by the KDP surface defects on micro-nano scale. It is helpful in understanding the laser-matter interactions and to improve the processing technique for high quality optical components.

Abstract:Black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) exhibit excellent optical and photothermal properties and promising applications in optoelectronics and biomedicine. However, various intrinsic structural defects and oxidation are nearly unavoidable in preparation of BPQDs and how they affect the electronic and optical properties remains unclear. Here, by employing time-dependent density functional theory, we reveal that there are two types of photoabsorption in BPQDs for both point defects and oxidation. A close structure-absorption relation is unraveled: BPQDs are defect-tolerant and show excellent photoabsorption as long as the coordination number (CN) of defective P atoms is 3. By contrast, the unsaturated or oversaturated P atoms with CN ≠ 3 create in-gap-states (IGSs) and completely quench the optical absorption. An effective way to eliminate the IGSs and repair the photoabsorption of defective BPQDs via sufficient hydrogen passivation is further proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals are widely used in laser ignition facilities as optical switching and frequency conversion components. These crystals are soft, brittle, and sensitive to external conditions (e.g., humidity, temperature, and applied stress). Hence, conventional characterization methods, such as transmission electron microscopy, cannot be used to study the mechanisms of material deformation. Nevertheless, understanding the mechanism of plastic-brittle transition in KDP crystals is important to prevent the fracture damage during the machining process. This study explores the plastic deformation and brittle fracture mechanisms of KDP crystals through nanoindentation experiments and theoretical calculations. The results show that dislocation nucleation and propagation are the main mechanisms of plastic deformation in KDP crystals, and dislocation pileup leads to brittle fracture during nanoindentation. Nanoindentation experiments using various indenters indicate that the external stress fields influence the plastic deformation of KDP crystals, and plastic deformation and brittle fracture are related to the material’s anisotropy. However, the effect of loading rate on the KDP crystal deformation is practically negligible. The results of this research provide important information on reducing machining-induced damage and further improving the optical performance of KDP crystal components.

Abstract:Vacancy defects are commonly present in crystals of energetic materials, and significantly influence the structural stability and decomposition mechanisms. However, there is a lack of profound understanding regarding the introduction of vacancy defects in energetic ionic salt, Dihydroxylammonium 5,5'-bitetrazole-1,1'-dioxide (TKX-50). Due to the 1:2 ratio of anions to cations, TKX-50 possesses a more complex distribution of vacancy defects compared to traditional energetic material. Based on density functional theory method, the relatively favorable thermodynamic formation of vacancy defect distributions was revealed. The noncovalent interactions within the system, as well as the planarity of the anions, were investigated to understand the structural stability of TKX-50. Through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we discovered that vacancy defects can expedite the hydrogen transfer during the initial decomposition stage of TKX-50 and affect the pathways of hydrogen transfer. In the subsequent decomposition process, introduction of vacancy defects in the TKX-50 crystal leads to an earlier onset of ring-opening reactions and accelerates the appearance of decomposition products. Additionally, it influences the reactions between intermediate species and small molecules. The findings have the potential to provide insights into modeling vacancy defects in energetic ionic salts and reveal the impact of such defects on the structural stability and decomposition mechanisms of these materials.
