Abstract:In this work, a method called the Taylor expansion method is used to solve a mixed linear Volterra–Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. A strict theory is established. The advantages of this method lie in that, on the one hand, the exact solution is obtained if the true solution is a polynomial, and on the other hand, if the true solution is not a polynomial, an approximate solution with high accuracy called an ε-approximate solution will be obtained by taking several terms. In short, our method is fast and efficient.

Abstract:Laplace transform is a powerful tool for solving differential and integrodifferential equations in engineering sciences. The use of Laplace transform for the solution of differential or integrodifferential equations sometimes leads to the solutions in the Laplace domain that cannot be inverted to the real domain by analytic methods. Therefore, we need numerical methods to invert the solution to the real domain. In this work, we construct numerical schemes based on Laplace transform for the solution of fractional-order Volterra integrodifferential equations in the sense of the Atangana-Baleanu Caputo derivative. We propose two numerical methods for approximating the solution of fractional-order linear and nonlinear Volterra integrodifferential equations. In our scheme, the inverse Laplace transform is approximated using a contour integration method and Stehfest method. Some numerical experiments are performed to check the accuracy and efficiency of the methods. The results obtained using these methods are compared.

Abstract:By introducing the fractional derivative in the sense of Caputo and combining the pretreatment technique to deal with long nonlinear items, the generalized two-dimensional differential transform method is proposed for solving the time-fractional Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV equation and coupled MKdV equation. The presented method is a numerical method based on the generalized Taylor series expansion which constructs an analytical solution in the form of a polynomial. The numerical results show that the generalized two-dimensional differential transform method is very effective for the fractional coupled equations.

Abstract:Different from the construction process of the traditional finite difference method, we derive a large class of high-accuracy methods for approximating derivatives. Since Taylor expansion is avoided, the requirement for function smoothness in the new methods is greatly reduced. We analyze the approximation errors of the proposed methods and compare their approximation effects. As a typical application, we use the proposed methods to solve Elliptic, Hyperbolic and Parabolic problems numerically. For time-dependent problems, a class of new fully implicit difference schemes and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method are both used for discretization . When using fully implicit difference schemes, unconditional stability and convergence are proved for hyperbolic and parabolic problems with the periodic boundary conditions. A large number of numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:This study introduces an indirect approach to find the solutions of the fractional Bessel differential equation using fractional Bernoulli functions and Caputo's fractional derivative. This method transforms the problem into a nonlinear system of algebraic equations. The existence and uniqueness of the solution for the problem are proved. Moreover, operational matrices for fractional derivatives and time‐fractional integration are constructed. These operational matrices, together with the least square approximation technique, are used to reduce the problem to a nonlinear system of algebraic equations. Newton's iterative method is applied to solve the nonlinear algebraic equations. The convergence analysis and the error estimate of the proposed method are also provided. This study demonstrates the effectiveness and the significance of the proposed method for obtaining approximate fractional solutions and for researchers in related fields or specific areas. Four examples are given to illustrate the accuracy and the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:We study a numerical approximation for a nonlinear variable-order fractional differential equation via an integral equation method. Due to the lack of the monotonicity of the discretization coefficients of the variable-order fractional derivative in standard approximation schemes, existing numerical analysis techniques do not apply directly. By an approximate inversion technique, the proposed model is transformed as a second kind Volterra integral equation, based on which a collocation method under uniform or graded mesh is developed and analyzed. In particular, the error estimates improve the existing results by proving a consistent and sharper mesh grading parameter and characterizing the convergence rates in terms of the initial value of the variable order, which demonstrates its critical role in determining the smoothness of the solutions and thus the numerical accuracy.

Abstract:Fractional calculus is the calculus of differentiation and integration of non-integer orders. In a recently paper (Annals of Physics 323 (2008) 2756-2778), the Fundamental Theorem of Fractional Calculus is highlighted. Based on this theorem, in this paper we introduce fractional series expansion method to fractional calculus. We define a kind of fractional Taylor series of an infinitely fractionally-differentiable function. Further, based on our definition we generalize hypergeometric functions and derive corresponding differential equations. For finitely fractionally-differentiable functions, we observe that the non-infinitely fractionally-differentiability is due to more than one fractional indices. We expand functions with two fractional indices and display how this kind of series expansion can help to solve fractional differential equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider practical numerical method to solve a space–time fractional advection–dispersion equation with variable coefficients on a finite domain. The equation is obtained from the standard advection–dispersion equation by replacing the first-order time derivative by the Caputo fractional derivative, and the first-order and second-order space derivatives by the Riemann–Liouville fractional derivative, respectively. Here, a new method for solving this equation is proposed in the reproducing kernel space. The representation of solution is given by the form of series and the n-term approximation solution is obtained by truncating the series. The method is easy to implement and the numerical results show the accuracy of the method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a Taylor expansion method for solving (approximately) linear Volterra integral equations with weakly singular kernel. By means of the nth-order Taylor expansion of the unknown function at an arbitrary point, the Volterra integral equation can be converted approximately to a system of equations for the unknown function itself and its n derivatives. This method gives a simple and closed form solution for the integral equation. In addition, some illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:In the present paper, a generalized local Taylor formula with the local fractional derivatives (LFDs) is proposed based on the local fractional calculus (LFC). From the fractal geometry point of view, the theory of local fractional integrals and derivatives has been dealt with fractal and continuously non-differentiable functions, and has been successfully applied in engineering problems. It points out the proof of the generalized local fractional Taylor formula, and is devoted to the applications of the generalized local fractional Taylor formula to the generalized local fractional series and the approximation of functions. Finally, it is shown that local fractional Taylor series of the Mittag-Leffler type function is discussed.

Abstract:A general fractional Taylor formula and its computation for insufficiently smooth functions are discussed. The Aitken delta square method and epsilon algorithm are implemented to compute the critical orders of the local fractional derivatives, from which more critical orders are recovered by analysing the regular pattern of the fractional Taylor formula. The Richardson extrapolation method is used to calculate the local fractional derivatives with critical orders. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:A generalized homotopy-based approach is developed to give highly accurate solutions of fractional differential equations. By introducing a scaling transformation, the computational domain of the nonlinear Riccati differential equations with fractional order changes from [0,+∞) to [0,1]. Analytical approximation of arbitrary accuracy is achieved, whose convergence is proved theoretically. The effectiveness and accuracy of our solution is strictly checked via error analysis. The proposed method is expected to be as a new and reliable analytical approach to give highly accurate solutions of strongly nonlinear problems in fractional calculus.

Abstract:Fractional calculus is a extension of derivatives and integrals to non-integer orders. It has been used widely to model scientific and engineering problems. In this article, the reproducing kernel theory is applied to solve a kind of nonlinear fractional order Volterra integro-differential equation. The fraction derivatives are described in Caputo sense. In order to solve this kind of equation, we discuss and derive the approximate solution in the form of series with easily computable terms in the reproducing kernel space, by introducing a simple algorithm to implement this process. Some numerical examples are given to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a block-by-block method for the numerical solution of multi-term fractional differential equations (MFDEs). The main idea is to convert a MFDE to a Volterra integral equation of weakly singular type, to which a well known block-by-block method is applied. We also provide the error analysis and convergence of the method. Finally, numerical examples involving Bagley–Torvik and relaxation-oscillation equations are given to confirm applications and the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, a wavelet numerical method for solving nonlinear Volterra integro-differential equations of fractional order is presented. The method is based upon Euler wavelet approximations. The Euler wavelet is first presented and an operational matrix of fractional-order integration is derived. By using the operational matrix, the nonlinear fractional integro-differential equations are reduced to a system of algebraic equations which is solved through known numerical algorithms. Also, various types of solutions, with smooth, non-smooth, and even singular behavior have been considered. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

Abstract:In this investigation, a new algorithm based on the compact difference method is proposed. The purpose of this investigation is to solve the 2D time-fractional integro-differential equation. The Riemann–Liouville derivative was utilized to define the time-fractional derivative. Meanwhile, the weighted and shifted Grünwald difference operator and product trapezoidal formula were utilized to construct a high-order numerical scheme. Also, we analyzed the stability and convergence. The convergence order was O(τ2+hx4+hy4), where τ is the time step size, hx and hy are the spatial step sizes. Furthermore, several examples were provided to verify the correctness of our theoretical reasoning.

Mathematical Modelling of Engineering Problems

Abstract:In this paper, we apply to a class of partial differential equation the finite element method when the problem is involving the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative for time and space variables on a bounded domain with bounded conditions. The studied equation is obtained from the standard time diffusion equation by replacing the first order time derivative by  for 0<<1 and for the second standard order space derivative by  for 1<<2 respectively. The existence of the unique solution is proved by the Lax-Milgram Lemma. We present here three schemes to approximate numerically the time derivative and use the finite element method for the space derivative using the Hadamard finite part integral and the Diethlem's first degree compound quadrature formula, the second approach is based on the link between Riemann-Liouville and Caputo fractional derivative, when the third method was based on the approximation of the Riemann-Liouville by the Grunwald-Letnikov fractional derivative. For the approximation of the space fractional derivative, the finite element method is introduced for all the three approaches. Finally, to check the effectiveness of the three methods, a numerical example was given.

Abstract:In this paper, a generalized fuzzy barycentric Lagrange interpolation method is proposed to solve two-dimensional fuzzy fractional Volterra integral equations. Firstly, we use the generalized Gronwall inequality and iterative methods to demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the original equation. Secondly, combining the generalized fuzzy interpolation method and the fuzzy Gauss-Jacobi quadrature formula to discretize the original equation into corresponding algebraic equations in fuzzy environment. Then, the convergence of the proposed method is analyzed, and an error estimate is given based on the uniform continuity modulus. Finally, some numerical experiments show that the proposed method has high numerical accuracy for both smooth and non-smooth solutions.
