Abstract:Clustering has been well known as an effective way to reduce energy dissipation and prolong network lifetime in wireless sensor networks. Recently, game theory has been used to model clustering problem. Each node is modeled as a player which can selfishly choose its own strategies to be a cluster head (CH) or not. And by playing a localized clustering game, it gets an equilibrium probability to be a CH that makes its payoff keep equilibrium. In this paper, based on game theory, we present a clustering protocol named Hybrid, Game Theory based and Distributed clustering. In our protocol, we specifically define the payoff for each node when choosing different strategies, where both node degree and distance to base station are considered. Under this definition, each node gets its equilibrium probability by playing the game. And it decides whether to be a CH based on this equilibrium probability that can achieve a good trade-off between minimizing energy dissipation and providing the required services effectively. Moreover, an iterative algorithm is proposed to select the final CHs from the potential CHs according to a hybrid of residual energy and the number of neighboring potential CHs. Our iterative algorithm can balance the energy consumption among nodes and avoid the case that more than one CH occurs in a close proximity. And we prove it terminates in finite iterations. Simulation results show that our protocol outperforms LEACH, CROSS and LGCA in terms of network lifetime.

Abstract:Clustering has been known as an effective way to reduce energy dissipation and prolong network lifetime in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Game theory (GT) has been used to find the optimal solutions to clustering problems. However, the residual energy of nodes is not considered when calculating the equilibrium probability in the earlier studies. Besides, under the perspective of energy consumption, the definitions of payoffs in local clustering games are required when calculating the equilibrium probability. Based on the considerations, a hybrid of the equilibrium probability attained by playing local clustering games and a cost-dependent exponential function is proposed to get the probability to be CH(Cluster Head), in which new definitions of payoffs under the perspective of energy consumption are used. In the paper, we proposed an efficient distributed, gametheory based clustering protocol (EDGC) for Wireless Sensor Networks. Simulation results show that the proposed clustering protocol EDGC outperforms LEACH, LGCA and HGTD in terms of network lifetime.

Abstract:A new method using game theoretic approach with multiple detecting nodes within one cluster was proposed after clusters were formed by using low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy(LEACH)-C router protocol in order to detect and distinguish suspicious nodes in wireless sensor network.A suspicious node in a cluster is determined as malicious or normal one by the cluster-head using majority voting principle after all its neighbor's decisions are collected.A symmetrical encryption algorithm is used to secure the neighbor's result transmission.If the suspicious node is malicious,the final detecting result will be broadcasted to all nodes within this cluster and the suspicious one will be isolated in order to decrease the risk of invasion.The energy consume of both attacker and defender in the game is considered to fit the wireless sensor network environment.Experimental results show that the multiple detecting nodes scheme is feasible and effective to use game theoretic approach in wireless sensor network,and the detection precision is promoted.

Abstract:Clustering techniques in wireless sensor networks have been widely utilized for their good performance in reducing energy dissipation and prolonging network lifetime. Once the cluster heads have been decided, the allocation of member nodes in the cross coverages formed by two or more clusters is critical to keep an energy balance on the cluster heads. In earlier studies, however, the allocation of member nodes simply depends on the distance or degree (the node number within the cluster heads’ communication radius) and, therefore, could cause imbalance to the cluster heads’ load and further degrade the whole wireless sensor network. To maintain the load balance of the cluster heads, in this article, game theory is introduced into the allocation problem of the member nodes. Before using the game theory approach, the number and distribution of cluster heads are first checked. If the cover rate of the cluster heads is low, then the node(s) uncovered by any cluster are randomly selected as new cluster head(s) to attain the cover rate required in the article. Furthermore, the number of cluster heads in a monitoring region is restricted. Finally, a game-based, energy-balance method is proposed and applied in the cluster-based routing protocols to improve their performance. For verification, the proposed method is embedded into the localized game theoretical clustering algorithm and hybrid, game theory–based and distributed clustering algorithm, which are two game theory and typical cluster-based routing protocols. The experimental results show that both of the improved protocols do balance the loads of the cluster heads and achieve better performance than their original versions in spanning the lifetime and balancing the energy in wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:Multihop communication mechanism has been widely employed in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for its practicability and high energy efficiency. However, hot spots emerge as locations, in which nodes die quickly because of heavy relay load, leading to disruption in network service. Balancing energy consumption of nodes so as to mitigate the hot spot issue in the network is very important for prolonging network lifetime. In this paper, we propose a distributed clustering algorithm, namely Game Theoretic Clustering (GTC), which can approach to the equilibrium of the energy consumption for the wireless network. Especially, the cluster size is determined adaptively based on the game theory and the cooperation between cluster heads. Simulation results show that GTC can balance the energy consumption levels and consequently extend the network lifetime.

Abstract:Energy efficiency is one of the critical challenges in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). WSNs collect and transmit data through sensor nodes. However, the energy carried by the sensor nodes is limited. The sensor nodes need to save energy as much as possible to prolong the network lifetime. This paper proposes a game theory-based energy-efficient clustering algorithm (GEC) for wireless sensor networks, where each sensor node is regarded as a player in the game. According to the length of idle listening time in the active state, the sensor node can adopt favorable strategies for itself, and then decide whether to sleep or not. In order to avoid the selfish behavior of sensor nodes, a penalty mechanism is introduced to force the sensor nodes to adopt cooperative strategies in future operations. The simulation results show that the use of game theory can effectively save the energy consumption of the sensor network and increase the amount of network data transmission, so as to achieve the purpose of prolonging the network lifetime.

Abstract:Clustering is an effective topology control method in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), since it can enhance the network lifetime and scalability. To prolong the network lifetime in clustered WSNs, an efficient cluster head (CH) optimization policy is essential to distribute the energy among sensor nodes. Recently, game theory has been introduced to model clustering. Each sensor node is considered as a rational and selfish player which will play a clustering game with an equilibrium strategy. Then it decides whether to act as the CH according to this strategy for a tradeoff between providing required services and energy conservation. However, how to get the equilibrium strategy while maximizing the payoff of sensor nodes has rarely been addressed to date. In this paper, we present a game theoretic approach for balancing energy consumption in clustered WSNs. With our novel payoff function, realistic sensor behaviors can be captured well. The energy heterogeneity of nodes is considered by incorporating a penalty mechanism in the payoff function, so the nodes with more energy will compete for CHs more actively. We have obtained the Nash equilibrium (NE) strategy of the clustering game through convex optimization. Specifically, each sensor node can achieve its own maximal payoff when it makes the decision according to this strategy. Through plenty of simulations, our proposed game theoretic clustering is proved to have a good energy balancing performance and consequently the network lifetime is greatly enhanced.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (for short, WSNs) can be used in many aspects in the future. One obstacle is their limited supply of energy. Therefore, minimizing energy consumption and maximizing the system lifetime have been a major design goal for WSNs. This paper presents an energy-efficient ACHGT (Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy based on Game-theoretic Techniques, for short, ACHGT) routing algorithm for WSNs. Individual sensors of the algorithm are modeled as players to make decisions about whether electing to become cluster-bead nodes by using node energy payoff functions to weigh their own costs and benefits. This strategy can keep sensor nodes of lower remainder energy out of being used up quickly. Besides, it can evenly distribute the energy load among the sensors in the network to prolong system lifetime. Detailed simulations of sensor network environments demonstrate that ACHGT algorithm reduces energy consumption, and improves the evenness of dissipated network energy and the ability of postponing the network partitions.

Abstract:In wireless sensor networks, due to uneven load distribution of sensor nodes and high energy consumption, cluster heads die prematurely and the phenomenon of "energy hole" appears. To solve these problems, a data aggregation method based on game theory is proposed. In the novel algorithm, the clusters are adjusted following the game theory after the initial clustering based on the virtual cellular structure. The numbers of nodes in each cluster are optimized to be as balanced as possible to maximize network life. The data collection schemes are designed according to the different functions of nodes in different positions in the cluster. In order to improve the accuracy of cluster head fusion data, the member nodes in the cluster are divided into reliable nodes, redundant nodes, and supplementary nodes, and the judgment and selection method of redundant nodes is proposed. The simulation results show that the algorithm can effectively eliminate data redundancy, and reduce the communication burden of the cluster head. The proposed algorithm is an effective measure to fully extend the network life.

Abstract:Efficient and reliable clustering mechanisms play a crucial role in enhancing the energy management efficiency of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). In recent years, game theory has been widely applied in clustering mechanisms for its ability to provide theoretical support in optimizing strategies. However, existing game theory-based clustering mechanisms only analyze the current cooperation and competition relationships of nodes in a single dimension, which limits the efficient energy utilization of the network. To address these limitations, this article proposes an adaptive energy-efficient clustering mechanism for UWSNs based on multidimensional game theory (MDGTC). During the candidate cluster head (C-CH) nodes selection, MDGTC enhances the opportunity of the potential optimal CH node to act as C-CH again by establishing a multidimensional clustering game model. Subsequently, an adaptive CH competition mechanism is introduced to further optimize the CH selection strategy by considering the energy and energy consumption status of local nodes and global networks. In addition, by combining a hierarchical architecture and a hybrid CH rotation mechanism, the stability of the proposed model is ensured, leading to a more balanced energy consumption among network nodes. In conclusion, MDGTC offers an effective distributed energy management architecture for UWSNs. The simulation results show that the MDGTC can achieve efficient energy utilization and prolong the network lifetime significantly.

Abstract:Trustworthy and reliable data delivery is a challenging task in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) due to unique characteristics and constraints. To acquire secured data delivery and address the conflict between security and energy, in this paper we present an evolutionary game based secure clustering protocol with fuzzy trust evaluation and outlier detection for WSNs. Firstly, a fuzzy trust evaluation method is presented to transform the transmission evidences into trust values while effectively alleviating the trust uncertainty. And then, a K-Means based outlier detection scheme is proposed to further analyze plenty of trust values obtained via fuzzy trust evaluation or trust recommendation. It can discover the commonalities and differences among sensor nodes while improving the accuracy of outlier detection. Finally, we present an evolutionary game based secure clustering protocol to achieve a trade-off between security assurance and energy saving for sensor nodes when electing for the cluster heads. A sensor node which failed to be the cluster head can securely choose its own head by isolating the suspicious nodes. Simulation results verify that our secure clustering protocol can effectively defend the network against the attacks from internal selfish or compromised nodes. Correspondingly, the timely data transfer rate can be improved significantly.

Abstract:In mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs), the mobility of nodes imposes heightened energy management demands on the network. This study proposes a game-based dynamic clustering routing (GDCR) protocol for MWSNs. The GDCR protocol employs multidimensional clustering and constructs a mixed strategy game model among heterogeneous nodes. This model considers various factors for cluster head selection, including residual energy, movement, distance to the sink, and node spacing, ensuring comprehensive decision making. In addition, the protocol incorporates detached node management to ensure network security and stability. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed protocol reduces the average network energy consumption when nodes have unrestricted movements. Furthermore, it effectively curtails fluctuations in energy consumption as the network scales up, thereby prolonging network lifetime and enhancing stability.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of dynamic clustering for wireless sensor networks(WSN) triggered by target event, a dynamic clustering protocol, focusing on cluster head selection, cluster member solicitation and cluster reorganization, is proposed. In cluster head selection mechanism, the proposed selection approach takes the detected signal strength, residual energy of node and distance between the cluster head and the sink node into consideration. In cluster member solicitation, an adaptive method based on task requirement is proposed in terms of cluster range setting, through this method, the cluster size is constrained and the energy consumption of intra-cluster communication is reduced. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol can efficiently conserve energy and prolong the lifetime of WSN, especially when the sink node is located far from the network.

Abstract:Energy is one of the most important factors in the design of routing protocols in wireless sensor networks. This paper first analyzes the energy consumption in typical clustering protocols and finds that the consumption is not evenly distributed among nodes. Thus some nodes die quickly with the reduction of the network lifetime. Then a new energy-balanced strategy is introduced in clustering protocols. The strategy assigns the head communication load to base station by detecting the energy consumption in the cluster heads. The evenly distributed energy among the nodes is realized by controlling the head consumption. Simulation results show that the lifetime of the network is significantly prolonged with the new energy-balanced strategy.

Abstract:Dynamic Clustering is an efficient topology management approach for sensor networks. Observing the fact that the clustering has tight relations with inter-cluster routing problem, we propose a hybrid clustering and routing protocol (HCR) that considers both the cluster head selection and routing discovery problems. Random backoff and gradient routing strategies are used to achieve our design goals with low overhead. Considering the limited transmission range bounded by the hardware, the clustered network generated by HCR is ensured to be connected. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed strategies ensure the connectivity of the network and improve the energy efficiency for data transmission.

Abstract:In order to prolong the network lifetime, a novel energy-efficient clustering algorithm is proposed to adapt the characteristic of heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. In the proved clustering protocol, taking communication distance and energy consumption into account comprehensively, cluster-heads are elected more evenly in clustering stage by a value based on minimum energy consumption rather than the physical position center. Simulation results indicate that the proved algorithm has longer network lifetime and superior performance compared with the original algorithms in heterogeneous environments.

Abstract:In energy-limited wireless sensor networks, network clustering and sensor scheduling are two efficient techniques for minimizing node energy consumption and maximizing network coverage lifetime. When integrating the two techniques, the challenges are how to select cluster heads and active nodes. In this paper, we propose a coverage-aware clustering protocol. In the proposed protocol, we define a cost metric that favors those nodes being more energy-redundantly covered as better candidates for cluster heads and select active nodes in a way that tries to emulate the most efficient tessellation for area coverage. Our simulation results show that the network coverage lifetime can be significantly improved compared with an existing protocol.

Abstract:In order to prolong the network lifetime, energy-efficient protocols adapted to the features of wireless sensor networks should be used. This paper explores in depth the nature of heterogeneous wireless sensor networks, and finally proposes an algorithm to address the problem of finding an effective pathway for heterogeneous clustering energy. The proposed algorithm implements cluster head selection according to the degree of energy attenuation during the network's running and the degree of candidate nodes' effective coverage on the whole network, so as to obtain an even energy consumption over the whole network for the situation with high degree of coverage. Simulation results show that the proposed clustering protocol has better adaptability to heterogeneous environments than existing clustering algorithms in prolonging the network lifetime.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSN) including large quantity of small sensor nodes with low-power energy consumption can effectively extend its life-span. However, the performance of WSN is affected by the environment. In this paper, we devise a new multi-hop routing algorithm clustering sensor nodes into groups to minimize the total energy consumption of the WSN. The proposed algorithm optimizes the intensity distribution of the cluster-heads (CHs) when introducing the model of Voronoi-Structure trees. The results of the simulation indicate that our algorithm using optimal parameter is able to prolong the life-span of the networks around 16% compared with low-energy adaptive cluster hierarchy (LEACH) and the whole networks obtain high performance on effective energy consumption.

Abstract:Clustering has proven to be an effective approach to organize the large-scale wireless sensor network into a connected hierarchy. It reduces energy dissipation and prolongs the network lifetime through data aggregation and redundancy elimination.Lots of clustering approaches are proposed to enhance the performance in various aspects.In this paper,some typical approaches are discussed and classified according to the enhancement and effect on load balance,heterogeneity,coverage model,data dissemination model and mobility. This paper also analyses the design rationale of the different clustering approaches,their features,node capability requirements,and proper application backgrounds. This paper ends with some open issues and suggestions.
