Abstract:The name ambiguity problem presents many challenges for scholar finding, citation analysis and other related research fields. To attack this issue, various disambiguation methods combined with separate disambiguation features have been put forward. In this paper, we offer an unsupervised Dempster–Shafer theory (DST) based hierarchical agglomerative clustering algorithm for author disambiguation tasks. Distinct from existing methods, we exploit the DST in combination with Shannon’s entropy to fuse various disambiguation features and come up with a more reliable candidate pair of clusters for amalgamation in each iteration of clustering. Also, some solutions to determine the convergence condition of the clustering process are proposed. Depending on experiments, our method outperforms three unsupervised models, and achieves comparable performances to a supervised model, while does not prescribe any hand-labelled training data.

Abstract:Word sense disambiguation (WSD) based on supervised machine learning is hard to deal with large-scale WSD because of its big labor cost.To solve this problem,an unsupervised WSD method was provided,which describes the word senses of an ambiguous word via synthesizing multiple knowledge sources in WordNet ontology,including definition glosses,samples,structured semantic relations,domain attributes,etc.From the description,a representative glossary and a domain representative glossary are deduced.The two structures together with the word sense frequency distribution and the context are used for WSD.The average disambiguation accuracy was 49.93% by this method in open test for six representative unsupervised WSD methods with Senseval-3 English lexical sample data set.

Abstract:This paper addresses the author disambiguation problem in academic social network, namely, resolves the phenomenon of synonym problem “multiple names refer to one person” and polysemy problem “one name refers to multiple persons”. A unified semi-supervised framework is proposed to deal with both the synonym and polysemy problems. First, the framework uses semi-supervised approach to solve the cold-start problem in author disambiguation. Second, robust training data generating method based on multi-aspect similarity indicator is used and a way based on support vector machine is employed to model different kinds of feature combinations. Third, a self-taught procedure is proposed to solve ambiguity in coauthor information to boost the performances from other models. The proposed framework is verified on a large-scale real-world dataset, and obtains promising results.

Abstract:As the amount of literature increases, there is great possibility that more and more duplicate names are shared by an unknown number of real-life authors. The ambiguity in author name seriously interferes with the evaluation of researchers' academic ability and other statistical indicators. In order to address the issue, we propose an automatic author name disambiguation algorithm based on multiple strategies. First, we extract attributes like collaborator, affiliation, title, abstract, keywords and subject from the metadata of NSTL literature, at the same time, we generate proper name associated item which is similar to surname for each name by designing associated item generating algorithm. Then, the author data to be disambiguated is divided into several different clusters according to the name associated item. Further, we combine with the custom name compatibility rules to find the potentially similar author pairs in the cluster and design the similarity messurement for every attribute according to the characteristics of attribute type. After that, the similarity calculation function is constructed for the comparison between author pairs, which are tagged by the threshold value of similarity. Our experiment performs on the randomly selected WOS data sets which are filled with unbalanced distribution for publication. Result shows that our proposed method achieve higher average F-score than both the traditional clustering disambiguation algorithm and the graph-based disambiguation method.

Abstract:Due to name abbreviations, identical names, name misspellings, and pseudonyms in publications or bibliographies (citations), an author may have multiple names and multiple authors may share the same name. Such name ambiguity affects the performance of document retrieval, web search, database integration, and may cause improper attribution to authors. This paper investigates two supervised teaming approaches to disambiguate authors in the citations'. One approach uses the naive Bayes probability model, a generative model; the other uses Support Vector Machines(SVMs) [39] and the vector space representation of citations, a discriminative model. Both approaches utilize three types of citation attributes: co-author names, the title of the paper, and the title of the journal or proceeding. We illustrate these two approaches on two types of data, one collected from the web, mainly publication lists from homepages, the other collected from the DBLP citation databases.

Abstract:Name ambiguity is common in academic digital libraries, such as multiple authors having the same name. This creates challenges for academic data management and analysis, thus name disambiguation becomes necessary. The procedure of name disambiguation is to divide publications with the same name into different groups, each group belonging to a unique author. A large amount of attribute information in publications makes traditional methods fall into the quagmire of feature selection. These methods always select attributes artificially and equally, which usually causes a negative impact on accuracy. The proposed method is mainly based on representation learning for heterogeneous networks and clustering and exploits the self-attention technology to solve the problem. The presentation of publications is a synthesis of structural and semantic representations. The structural representation is obtained by meta-path-based sampling and a skip-gram-based embedding method, and meta-path level attention is introduced to automatically learn the weight of each feature. The semantic representation is generated using NLP tools. Our proposal performs better in terms of name disambiguation accuracy compared with baselines and the ablation experiments demonstrate the improvement by feature selection and the meta-path level attention in our method. The experimental results show the superiority of our new method for capturing the most attributes from publications and reducing the impact of redundant information.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of name disambiguation. By name disambiguation, we mean distinguishing persons with the same name. It is a critical problem in many knowledge management applications. Despite much research work has been conducted, the problem is still not resolved and becomes even more serious, in particular with the popularity of Web 2.0. Previously, name disambiguation was often undertaken in either a supervised or unsupervised fashion. This paper first gives a constraint-based probabilistic model for semi-supervised name disambiguation. Specifically, we focus on investigating the problem in an academic researcher social network (http://arnetminer.org). The framework combines constraints and Euclidean distance learning, and allows the user to refine the disambiguation results. Experimental results on the researcher social network show that the proposed framework significantly outperforms the baseline method using unsupervised hierarchical clustering algorithm.

Abstract:Name ambiguity, due to the fact that many people share an identical name, often deteriorates the performance of information integration, document retrieval and web search. In academic data analysis, author name ambiguity usually decreases the analysis performance. To solve this problem, an author name disambiguation task is designed to divide documents related to an author name reference into several parts and each part is associated with a real-life person. Existing methods usually use either attributes of documents or relationships between documents and co-authors. However, methods of feature extraction using attributes cause inflexibility of models while solutions based on relationship graph network ignore the information contained in the features. In this paper, we propose a novel name disambiguation model based on representation learning which incorporates attributes and relationships. Experiments on a public real dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our model and experimental results demonstrate that our solution is superior to several state-of-the-art graph-based methods. We also increase the interpretability of our method through information theory and show that the analysis could be helpful for model selection and training progress.

Abstract:Name ambiguity problem has been a challenging issue for a long history. In this paper, we intend to make a thorough investigation of the whole problem. Specifically, we formalize the name disambiguation problem in a unified framework. The framework can incorporate both attribute and relationship into a probabilistic model. We explore a dynamic approach for automatically estimating the person number K and employ an adaptive distance measure to estimate the distance between objects. Experimental results show that our proposed framework can significantly outperform the baseline method.

Abstract:Names make up a large portion of queries in search engines, while the name ambiguity problem brings negative effect to the service quality of search engines. In digital academic systems, this problem refers to a large number of publications containing ambiguous author names. Name ambiguity derives from many people sharing identical names, or names may be abbreviated. Although some methods have been proposed in the decade, this problem is still not completely solved and there are many subproblems needing to be studied. Due to lack of information, it is a nontrivial task to distinguish ambiguous authors accurately relying on limited internal information only. In this paper, we focus on the cold-start disambiguation task with homonymous author names, i.e., distinguishing publications written by authors with identical names. We present a supervised framework named DND (abbreviation for Distributed Framework for Name Disambiguation) to solve the author disambiguation problem efficiently. DND utilizes accessible information and trains a robust function to measure similarities between publications, and then determines whether they belong to the same author. In traditional clustering-based approaches for author disambiguation, the number of clusters which is the amount of authors sharing the same name is hard to predict in advance, while DND transforms the clustering task to a linkage prediction task to avoid specifying the number of clusters. We validate the effectiveness of DND on two real-world datasets. The experimental results indicate that DND achieves a competitive performance compared with the baselines.

Abstract:Since multiple people share the same name in the real world, this will cause performance degradation to academic search systems and lead to misattribution of publications. The author name disambiguation algorithm has not yet to be well solved. In this paper, we propose a disambiguation method that combines heterogeneous graph-based and improved label propagation, first we construct a publication heterogeneous graph network, then graph neural networks is applied to aggregate the nodes representation and relation types, finally combined with the improved label propagation algorithm to realize clustering. The task of author name disambiguation is completed to improve the retrieval performance. Experimental results on two public datasets show that our method was improved by 2.8% and 4.9% over the suboptimal method, respectively. Our method can effectively reduce the number of publications returning the wrong author and improve the performance of the academic retrieval system.

Abstract:Name ambiguity stems from the fact that many people or objects share identical names in the real world. Such name ambiguity decreases the performance of document retrieval, Web search, information integration, and may cause confusion in other applications. Due to the same name spellings and lack of information, it is a nontrivial task to distinguish them accurately. In this article, we focus on investigating the problem in digital libraries to distinguish publications written by authors with identical names. We present an effective framework named GHOST (abbreviation for GrapHical framewOrk for name diSambiguaTion), to solve the problem systematically. We devise a novel similarity metric, and utilize only one type of attribute (i.e., coauthorship) in GHOST. Given the similarity matrix, intermediate results are grouped into clusters with a recently introduced powerful clustering algorithm called Affinity Propagation . In addition, as a complementary technique, user feedback can be used to enhance the performance. We evaluated the framework on the real DBLP and PubMed datasets, and the experimental results show that GHOST can achieve both high precision and recall .

Abstract:In the real world, it is inevitable that some people share a name. However, the ambiguity of the author’s name has brought many difficulties to the retrieval of academic works. Existing author name disambiguation works generally rely on the feature engineering or graph topology of the academic networks (e.g., the collaboration relationships). However, the features may be costly to obtain due to the availability or privacy of data. What’s more, the simple relational data cannot capture the rich semantics underlying the heterogeneous academic graphs. Therefore, in this paper, we study the problem of author name disambiguation in the setting of heterogeneous information network, and a novel network representation learning based author name disambiguation method is proposed. Firstly, we extract the heterogeneous information networks and meta-path channels based on the selected meta-paths. Secondly, two meta-path based proximities are proposed to measure the neighboring and structural similarities between nodes. Thirdly, the embeddings of various types of nodes are sampled and jointly updated according to the extracted meta-path channels. Finally, the disambiguation task is completed by employing an effective clustering method on the generated paper related vector space. Experimental results based on well-known Aminer dataset show that the proposed method can obtain better results compared to state-of-the-art author name disambiguation methods.

Abstract:Despite years of research, the name ambiguity problem remains largely unresolved. Outstanding issues include how to capture all information for name disambiguation in a unified approach, and how to determine the number of people K in the disambiguation process. In this paper, we formalize the problem in a unified probabilistic framework, which incorporates both attributes and relationships. Specifically, we define a disambiguation objective function for the problem and propose a two-step parameter estimation algorithm. We also investigate a dynamic approach for estimating the number of people K. Experiments show that our proposed framework significantly outperforms four baseline methods of using clustering algorithms and two other previous methods. Experiments also indicate that the number K automatically found by our method is close to the actual number.

Abstract:AMiner 1 is a free online academic search and mining system, having collected more than 130,000,000 researcher profiles and over 200,000,000 papers from multiple publication databases [25]. In this paper, we present the implementation and deployment of name disambiguation , a core component in AMiner. The problem has been studied for decades but remains largely unsolved. In AMiner, we did a systemic investigation into the problem and propose a comprehensive framework to address the problem. We propose a novel representation learning method by incorporating both global and local information and present an end-to-end cluster size estimation method that is significantly better than traditional BIC-based method. To improve accuracy, we involve human annotators into the disambiguation process. We carefully evaluate the proposed framework on real-world large data and experimental results show that the proposed solution achieves clearly better performance (+7-35% in terms of F1-score) than several state-of-the-art methods including GHOST [5], Zhang et al. [33], and Louppe et al. [17]. Finally, the algorithm has been deployed in AMiner to deal with the disambiguation problem at the billion scale, which further demonstrates both effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework.

Abstract:The ambiguity of name entities is a common problem in information retrieval, which leads to the decline of retrieval quality. This makes name disambiguation particularly important. In academic field, the rapidly increasing large-scale of publications has imposed more challenges to the name disambiguation problem. Existing works mainly focus on leveraging content information to distinguish different name entities. In this paper, we consider jointly utilizing both content information and relational information to disambiguate the same name. Firstly, we construct a Heterogeneous Academic Network based on meta information of publications such as collaborators, institutions and venues. Then, we transform the network into separate homogeneous graphs. After that, we propose Graph Attention Networks to jointly learn content and relational information by optimizing an embedding vector. Finally, a clustering algorithm is presented to gather author names most likely representing the same person. The experiments show that our method is effective and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both precision and recall metrics.

Abstract:Author disambiguation in digital libraries becomes increasingly difficult as the number of publications and consequently the number of ambiguous author names keep growing. The fully automatic author disambiguation approach could not give satisfactory results due to the lack of signals in many cases. Furthermore, human judgment on the basis of automatic algorithms is also not suitable because the automatically disambiguated results are often mixed and not understandable for humans. In this paper, we propose a Labeling Oriented Author Disambiguation approach, called LOAD, to combine machine learning and human judgment together in author disambiguation. LOAD exploits a framework which consists of high precision clustering, high recall clustering, and top dissimilar clusters selection and ranking. In the framework, supervised learning algorithms are used to train the similarity functions between publications and a clustering algorithm is further applied to generate clusters. To validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed LOAD approach, comprehensive experiments are conducted. Comparing to conventional author disambiguation algorithms, the LOAD yields much more accurate results to assist human labeling. Further experiments show that the LOAD approach can save labeling time dramatically.

Abstract:To solve the problems of data sparseness and knowledge acquisition in translation disambiguation and WSD (word sense disambiguation), this paper introduces a fully unsupervised method, which is based on Web mining and Web indirect association of bilingual words. It provides new knowledge of translation disambiguation. It assumes that word sense can be determined by indirect association of bilingual words. Based on Web, this paper revises four common methods of indirect association, and designs three decision methods. These methods are evaluated on a gold standard Multilingual Chinese English Lexical Sample Task dataset of SemEval- 2007. The experimental results show that the model gets the state-of-the-art results (Pmar=44.4%) and outperforms the best system in SemEval-2007.

Abstract:Disambiguating person names in a set of documents (e.g. research papers or Web pages) is a critical problem in many knowledge management applications. The phenomenon of ambiguity will deteriorate the quality of service, such as the scholar searching and expert finding. Despite years of research, this problem remains largely unsolved, where the unknown number of persons with the same name and the information scarcity in documents pose many difficulties and challenges. In this paper, we formalize name disambiguation as a collective classification problem and solve it using a simple yet effective iterative classification algorithm, referred as ICAND (i.e. Iterative Classification Algorithm for Name Disambiguation). Experimental results on researcher dataset show that the proposed approach can significantly outperform several baseline methods.
