Abstract:A vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a special mobile ad hoc network that provides vehicle collaborative security applications using intervehicle communication technology. The method enables vehicles to exchange information (e.g., emergency brake). In VANET, there are many vehicle platoon driving scenes, where vehicles with identical attributes (location, organization, etc.) are organized as a group. However, this organization causes the issue of security threats (message confidentiality, identity privacy, etc.) because of an unsafe wireless communication channel. To protect the security and privacy of group communication, it is necessary to design an effective group key agreement scheme. By negotiating a dynamic session secret key using a fixed roadside unit (RSU), which has stronger computational ability than the on-board unit (OBU) equipped on the vehicle, the designed scheme can help to provide more stable communication performance and speed up the encryption and decryption processes. To effectively implement the anonymous authentication mechanism and authentication efficiency, we use a batch authentication scheme and a shared secret key mechanism among the vehicles, RSUs and trusted authority (TA). We design an efficient group secret key agreement scheme, which satisfies the above communication and security requirements, protects the privacy of vehicles, and traces the real identity of the vehicle at a time when it is necessary. Computational analysis shows that the proposed scheme is secure and more efficient than existing schemes.

Abstract:With the constant development of wireless communication technologies, the Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) will become an inevitable paradigm for intelligent transportation systems. Privacy-preserving and authentication security has been a core concern in VANETs, and pseudonym-based and group signature-based privacy-preserving authentication schemes have been widely proposed. However, most research schemes rely excessively on the Trusted Authority, and vehicle request and authentication information is almost transparent in front of TAs, while they cannot guarantee the security of vehicle request information after it is intercepted. To address these issues, this paper proposes a lightweight privacy-preserving authentication scheme that mitigates TA dependency, aiming to achieve mutual privacy protection and authentication between vehicles and TAs in VANETs by improving the oblivious transfer algorithm. The security analysis proves that this scheme has good privacy protection and attack resistance, and in addition, the performance simulation and evaluation show that this scheme spends lower computation and communication overheads while ensuring lower authentication delay and packet loss rate, which is a better overall performance compared with other schemes.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are fundamental components of building a safe and intelligent transportation system. However, due to its wireless nature, VANETs have serious security and privacy issues that need to be addressed. The conditional privacy-preserving authentication protocol is one important tool to satisfy the security and privacy requirements. Many such schemes employ the certificateless signature, which not only avoids the key management issue of the PKI-based scheme but also solves the key escrow problem of the ID-based signature scheme. However, many schemes have the drawback that the computational expensive bilinear pairing operation or map-to-point hash function are used. In order to enhance the efficiency, certificateless signature schemes for VANETs are usually constructed to support signature aggregation or online/offline computation. In this paper, we propose an efficient conditional privacy-preserving authentication scheme using an online/offline certificateless aggregate signature, which does not require bilinear pairing or map-to-point hash function, to address the security and privacy issues of VANETs. Our proposed scheme is proven to be secure with a rigorous security proof, and it satisfies all the security and privacy requirements with a better performance compared with other related schemes.

Abstract:In existing authentication schemes for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), the public key infrastructure (PKI)-based pseudonym certificate, identity-based encryption and group signature technology are usually used to preserve the security and privacy. However, these schemes face some challenges, e.g., the time-consuming certificate revocation list (CRL) checking, identity revocation issue and the computation overhead of group signature, respectively. To cope with these challenges, we propose a hybrid conditional privacy-preserving authentication protocol based on the PKI certificate and identity-based signature. In our scheme, the trust authority (TA) assigns the unique long-term certificate for every registered node. Only the vehicle with valid certificate can apply the anonymous short term identity from the current RSU to sign safety-related message. The identity-based signature avoids the CRL checking and the complex bilinear paring operation. When vehicle is compromised, TA can easily revoke its identity by the only long-term certificate. To further enhance efficiency, vehicle can verify the received messages by the single or batch authentication manner. In addition, we optimize the authentication process to avoid vehicle verifying the repeated and unnecessary signatures. Compared with the current schemes, the simulation result shows that our authentication protocol can effectively reduce verified messages in the case of meeting the requirement of security and privacy.

Abstract:A Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) is a form of Mobile ad-hoc network, to provide communications among nearby vehicles and between vehicles and nearby fixed roadside equipment. The key operation in VANETs is the broadcast of messages. Consequently, the vehicles need to make sure that the information has been sent by an authentic node in the network. VANETs present unique challenges such as high node mobility, real-time constraints, scalability, gradual deployment and privacy. No existent technique addresses all these requirements. In particular, both inter-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside wireless communications present different characteristics that should be taken into account when defining node authentication services. That is exactly what is done in this paper, where the features of inter-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside communications are analyzed to propose differentiated services for node authentication, according to privacy and efficiency needs.

Abstract:By broadcasting messages about traffic status to vehicles wirelessly, a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) can improve traffic safety and efficiency. To guarantee secure communication in VANETs, security and privacy issues must be addressed before their deployment. The conditional privacy-preserving authentication (CPPA) scheme is suitable for solving security and privacy-preserving problems in VANETs, because it supports both mutual authentication and privacy protection simultaneously. Many identity-based CPPA schemes for VANETs using bilinear pairings have been proposed over the last few years to enhance security or to improve performance. However, it is well known that the bilinear pairing operation is one of the most complex operations in modern cryptography. To achieve better performance and reduce computational complexity of information processing in VANET, the design of a CPPA scheme for the VANET environment that does not use bilinear paring becomes a challenge. To address this challenge, we propose a CPPA scheme for VANETs that does not use bilinear paring and we demonstrate that it could supports both the mutual authentication and the privacy protection simultaneously. Our proposed CPPA scheme retains most of the benefits obtained with the previously proposed CPPA schemes. Moreover, the proposed CPPA scheme yields a better performance in terms of computation cost and communication cost making it be suitable for use by the VANET safety-related applications.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) has been a promising technology in smart transportation system, which can enable information exchange between vehicles and roadside units (RSUs). However, the privacy of vehicles and RSUs is a critical challenge in VANET, as they may expose sensitive information to malicious attackers or unauthorized parties. Many existing authenticated key agreement (AKA) schemes aim to protect the privacy of vehicles and RSUs, but they often neglect the physical security of the devices involved in the communication. Therefore, we propose an efficient and privacy-preserving AKA scheme in VANET, which embeds physical unclonable function (PUF) and fuzzy extraction (FE) technology. PUF is a physical device that generates random strings based on their intrinsic characteristics and external inputs, which can protect the secrets in the devices from being stolen by attackers. FE can compensate for the drawbacks of PUF affected by environmental factors. Our scheme preserves the identity privacy of legitimate RSUs and vehicles, as well as intercepts and traces the identity of malicious attackers. In addition, we eliminate the involvement of the third party (TP) in the AKA phase to better meet the high-speed driving of vehicles. Finally, we conduct formal and informal security analyses in random oracle model (ROM), which prove that our scheme can resist various attacks. We also show in the performance analysis that our scheme has the lowest computational cost, communication overhead, and total energy consumption.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a multihop mobile wireless communication network that can realize many vehicle-related applications through multitop communication. In the open wireless communication environment, security and privacy protection are important contents of VANET research. The most basic method of VANET privacy protection is anonymous authentication. Even through, there are many existing schemes to provide anonymous authentication for VANETs. Many existing schemes suffer from high computational cost by using bilinear pairing operation or need the assistance of the trust authorities (TAs) during the authentication process or rely on an ideal tamper-proof device (TPD), which requires very strong security assumption. In this study, an anonymous authentication and key negotiation scheme by using private key and group key is proposed, which is based on pseudonym using the nonsingular elliptic curve. In this scheme, there is no third party trust center to participate in the authentication, there is no need to query the database, and there is no need of the local database to save the identity information of many vehicles, which reduce the storage space and the authentication time compared with other schemes. The proposed scheme only needs realistic TPDs. In the proposed scheme, TPDs do not need to preinstall the system key as many other schemes do; hence, the failure of a single TPD does not affect the security of the entire system. The security of the scheme is proved under the random oracle model. Compared with the related schemes using bilinear pairings, the computational cost and communication cost of the proposed scheme are reduced by 82% and 50%, respectively.

Abstract:Privacy and security issues should be paid more attention before vehicular networks are deployed and applied in practice. This paper introduces an efficient privacy-preserving protocol with confidentiality for Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) based on group signcryption. The proposed protocol featured with the following characteristics: Firstly, it offers conditional anonymous authentication: a message issuer can authenticate itself anonymously on behalf of a group of potential signers while only a trusted authority can reveal the true identity of a message sender. Secondly, it provides confidential: the secrecy of the communication content can be protected. Thirdly, it is efficient: it achieves low storage requirements, fast message verification and cost-effective identity tracking in case of a dispute.

Abstract:In the vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), the communication between the vehicle and other nodes is performed in an open channel, which puts forward the requirements for its privacy security and message integrity. Most previous protocols either frequently verify identities before accepting traffic information or do not involve identity revocation mechanisms, and they may assume that third parties are fully trusted. To further solve the above problem, a certificateless-based anonymous and revocable authentication protocol for vehicle-to-vehicle communications is proposed in this article. Our construction separates the identity authentication process from the traffic message verification, which not only avoids the disadvantage of a frequent identity revocation list (IRL) checking but also reduces the overhead in communication and message authentication. These features can make "identity authentication once, broadcast efficiency" really happen. In addition, since our authentication process is based on certificateless signature, it can resist malicious key generation centers (KGCs) and road-side units (RSUs), which is very necessary for privacy-sensitive application scenarios. Finally, the performance analyses show that our proposal is superior to the existing schemes in terms of authentication speed and communication overhead.

Abstract:Cybersecurity is a hot issue in our times. People try to keep digital attacks away from cyberspace, to finish the task of cybersecurity. A vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) with drone assistance is an important part of cyberspace, which can be used in disastrous or rural areas. The data produced on the vehicle side should go through different channels to the central server for processing. However, various attacks may occur in communication, and the tasks of data security in VANETs attract researchers to solve them. Although, researchers have come up with various solutions to overcome the flaws; however, the various security loopholes are still there to be addressed. In this paper, we present a new and secure signature-based scheme for UAV-assisted VANETs, which can ensure that the produced data on the vehicles are transmitted securely. Also, the identities of vehicles can be tracked, if they should be monitored by police. We present the formal and informal security analysis of the proposed scheme to prove its security against well-known security attacks. The formal security analysis is presented based on the widely used random oracle model. The informal analysis is presented using the assumptions of the threat model. Also, Proverif is used to illustrate the security of our scheme under Dolev-Yao model. Furthermore, we present a detailed performance analysis of the proposed protocol along with a simulation to show that the proposed scheme is practical.

Abstract:The big data of Internet of vehicles contributes to the development of intelligent transportation. Privacy protection in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks(VANETs) is the core factor to improve user and vehicle participation. This paper proposes a novel blockchain-based dynamic extensible privacy protection and message authentication scheme for VANETs. It minimizes the computation cost of message authentication based on an elliptic curve and message batch verification. Based on the Chinese remainder theorem, this scheme protects transmitted message security by adaptively and dynamically responding to vehicles and RSUs accessing the VANET. It offers a smart contract-based forensics and tracing solution from the accident vehicle. In addition, strict security proof and analysis that the scheme meets the security requirements for the VANET. It evaluates the efficiency of the scheme, and the results show its practicality.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an efficient and multi-level conditional privacy preservation authentication protocol in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) based on ring signature. The proposed protocol has three appealing characteristics: First, it offers conditional privacy preservation authentication: while every receiver can verify that a message issuer is an authorized participant in the system only a trusted authority can reveal the true identity of a message sender. Second, it is equipped with multi-level countermeasure: each vehicle can select the degree of privacy according to its own requirements. Third, it is efficient: our system outperforms previous proposals in message authentication and verification, cost-effective identity tracking in case of a dispute, and low storage requirements. We demonstrate the merits gained by the proposed protocol through extensive analysis.

Abstract:Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have stimulated interest in both academic and industry settings because, once deployed, they would bring a new driving experience to drivers. However, communicating in an open-access environment makes security and privacy issues a real challenge, which may affect the large-scale deployment of VANETs. Researchers have proposed many solutions to these issues. We start this paper by providing background information of VANETs and classifying security threats that challenge VANETs. After clarifying the requirements that the proposed solutions to security and privacy problems in VANETs should meet, on the one hand, we present the general secure process and point out authentication methods involved in these processes. Detailed survey of these authentication algorithms followed by discussions comes afterward. On the other hand, privacy preserving methods are reviewed, and the tradeoff between security and privacy is discussed. Finally, we provide an outlook on how to detect and revoke malicious nodes more efficiently and challenges that have yet been solved.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an efficient and trustworthy conditional privacy-preserving communication protocol for VANETs based on proxy re-signature. The proposed protocol is characterized by the Trusted Authority (TA) designating the Roadside Units (RSUs) to translate signatures computed by the On-Board Units (OBUs) into one that are valid with respect to TA's public key. In addition, the proposed protocol offers both a priori and a posteriori countermeasures: it can not only provide fast anonymous authentication and privacy tracking, but guarantees message trustworthiness for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. Furthermore, it reduces the communication overhead and offers fast message authentication and, low storage requirements. We use extensive analysis to demonstrate the merits of the proposed protocol and to contrast it with previously proposed solutions.

Abstract:This paper introduces a traceable privacy-preserving authentication protocol for VehicularAd-hoc Network(VANET) based on a single hop Proxy Re-signature(PRS) in the standard model.It achieves some good features: The TRC designates the RSU translating signatures computed by the OBU into one which validness can be verified by the TRC’s public key.Therefore,it is prevented that vehicles are traced by their signatures on the messages,and attacks are thwarted by using an endorsement mechanism based on signatures.Security analysis shows that the protocol can achieve good conditional privacy target of VANET.Performance analysis shows that the protocol can also provide an efficient way to relieve workload by less storage and communication cost compared to the other classic protocols.

Abstract:Vehicular Ad Hoc Network(VANET) is a hot topic, how to design an efficient authentication scheme is the core problem in this field. With the considerable progress in computing capability and side-channel attack capability, some seemingly safe third parties have also become less safe. Our paper focuses on weakening the use of trusted authority(TA) and improving the fault tolerance of authentication schemes. At first, all private keys are generated by users. Next, the ephemeral Diffie-Hellman key exchange scheme is used to construct a PID authentication. Moreover, we build a partial key delivery method without a secure channel. In the batch message authentication part, we use the Shamir secret share method to build a (t, n) threshold signature scheme that guarantees batch signatures cannot be tampered with fewer than t people involved. Finally, we make a comparison of time cost and communication cost with the other four schemes. Our scheme has a remarkable advantage over other schemes by comparing experimental data.

Abstract:Information sharing among vehicles is an essential component of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), but must take into consideration the security and privacy requirements of the network participants. Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is a pervasive network, where vehicles communicate wirelessly with nearby vehicles, infrastructure nodes, and other connected devices to improve road safety and provide other useful services. Security of VANET can be improved by ensuring that only authorized vehicles can participate in the network. This research proposes a new approach that uses roadside units (RSUs) to authenticate safety messages and notify vehicles about any unauthorized messages/senders. We present a three‐tier architecture with a distributed blockchain to securely maintain the identity of all vehicles in the network. The use of this RSU‐based approach helps to reduce the computational overhead on the On‐board unit (OBU) of individual vehicles and does not require the transmission of lengthy certificates and certificate revocation lists with each message. Simulation results indicate that the proposed approach achieves improved performance compared to existing techniques in terms of both authentication delay and channel load.

Abstract:Vehicular ad-hoc network enhances driving safety and enables various intelligent transportation applications by adopting the revolutionary vehicular wireless communication technology. This has attracted a lot of attentions from both academia and industry in recent years. Given the sophistication of vehicular manufacturing and the heterogeneity of intelligent transport terminals, performing vehicular authentication is of great importance. The existing schemes have largely considered vehicle security and authentication within a single administrative domain, which lacks supervision of the authority and entity in the intelligent transportation system. In this article, we propose a multidomain vehicular authentication architecture by introducing blockchain technique to build distributed trust and share cross-domain information among multiple administrative domains. To guarantee the anonymity and traceability, a pseudonym-based privacy-preserving authentication method is proposed. Specifically, considering the supervision of authority and the resilience to key escrow, we design a two-phase pseudonym distribution mechanism with the assistance of a roadside unit (RSU) proxy. We conduct in-depth security analysis by comparing with existing works and deploy experiments to show the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed scheme in the multidomain scenario.
