Abstract:Using the best track data set of tropical cyclones in the Western North Pacific（WNP） from 1999 to 2018 compiled by the China Meteorological Administration（CMA） and National Centers for Environmental Prediction（NCEP）reanalysis data, combined with the statistical significance of the mean and standard deviation, extreme weather threshold and other methods, the definition threshold of rapid intensification（RI） is determined to be -29.82 hPa·（24 h） -1 . Statistics show that RI mainly occurs in the Western North Pacific region from July to October, concentrated on the ocean surface of 5°N～20°N and 120°E～160°E. Through the dynamic synthesis analysis of RI and non-rapid intensification（non-RI）, it is found that:（1） the response time of RI to environmental variables is significantly related to the correlation coefficient, and the earlier the environmental factors affect RI, the greater the correlation coefficient with RI;（2） The most obvious factors affecting RI are sea surface temperature（SST）, high-level divergence and vertical wind shear,followed by middle-level relative humidity and low-level divergence, while low-level water vapor flux divergence and relative vorticity are the weakest;（3） The initial intensity of tropical cyclone also affects the contribution of different environmental factors to the occurrence of RI.

Abstract:The asymmetric distribution of convection associated with tropical cyclones making landfall on the east China coast is studied with black-body temperature (TBB) data from Fengyun-2 (FY-2) geostationary weather satellite. The convection in various quadrants of the TCs is examined for the period of -24 to 6 h relative to landfall. The convection to the southern side of the TCs was much more intense than that to the northern side during the whole landfall period. The convection to the western side of the TCs was stronger than that to the eastern side for the time 8 h before and at the landfall. After landfall, the situation reverses. The asymmetric convection of the TCs was partly due to the vertical wind shear and storm motion, and partly because the process of landfall restrained the convection in relevant quadrants. Besides, the orographic uplift along the east of China was favorable to the enhancement of convection in the eastern side of the TCs. From the characteristics of convective asymmetry of the TCs landing on the south and east of China, it is known that their main difference might be the included angle between the TC path and the coastline as well as the terrain along the coast.

Abstract:In this study, coastal gales and rainfall attributed to the landfall of Typhoon Soudelor (2015) are analyzed based on observational dense automatic weather stations data, advanced scatterometer-retrieved 10-m ocean surface wind data and simulations using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. This study focuses on gale bands in the right-front quadrant of the typhoon and associated coastal winds over Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces in China before the landfall of the typhoon. The results are summarized as follows. (1) 10-in surface wind data from automatic weather stations over land and islands, advanced scatterometer-retrieved 10-m ocean surface wind data, and the WRF simulation indicate similar mesoscale offshore gales. (2) The model simulation with a 333-in grid mesh indicates a gale zone over the might-front quadrant of the typhoon; the gale is "broken" over the coastal areas, and formed an inhomogeneous gale band. (3) The model-simulated winds agree well with the island observations. (4) Non-uniform gales over boundary layers result in horizontal wind-speed gradients and strong convergence that favors the development of convection and the maintenance of ocean surface gales.
Synoptic Flow Patterns and Large-Scale Characteristics Associated with Rapidly Intensifying Tropical Cyclones in the South China Sea

Abstract:The typical synoptic flow patterns and environmental factors that favor the rapid intensification (RI) of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the South China Sea (SCS) have been identified based on all TCs formed in the SCS between 1981 and 2011. The quantity RI is defined as the 24-h increase in maximum sustained surface wind speed by 15 m s(-1) as in previous studies, which is close to the 95th percentile of 24-h intensity change of all SCS samples excluding those after landfall. There are 4.9% (2.3%) of tropical depressions (tropical storms) that experienced RI. No typhoons satisfied the RI threshold.Six low-level synoptic flow patterns favoring RI have been identified based on 18 RI cases. In the monsoon season very few TCs experience RI due to large vertical wind shear (VWS). Most RI cases occurred in the postmonsoon season when the midlatitude troughs often penetrated into the SCS whereas the southwesterly monsoon flow is still strong in the southern SCS. Compared with those of non-RI cases, the mean initial conditions of RI cases include weak VWS and relatively strong forcing from midlatitude troughs. Several criteria of significant environmental factors for RI are statistically identified based on all TC samples. It is found that 16 non-RI TCs fitted in the RI flow patterns but only two of them satisfy all the criteria, suggesting that a combination of the synoptic flow pattern and the environmental factors can be used to predict RI in the SCS. In addition, two RI cases involving TC-trough interaction are analyzed.
Recent increase in rapid intensification events of tropical cyclones along China coast

Abstract:Tropical cyclone (TC) rapid intensification (RI) in the nearshore region often poses a serious threat to populated coastal regions. Although several previous studies have revealed an increased probability of RI events just before landfall in North America under global warming, it is unknown whether a similar increase has occurred along China coast. Here, we examine the long-term change of TC RI events along China coast during 1981–2020. Results show that the RI events along China coast have experienced a statistically significant increase since 1981, particularly in the latest decade. Further analysis reveals that the local sea surface temperature, maximum potential intensity, upper-level divergence, low-level vorticity, and vertical wind shear along China coast become increasingly favorable for TC RI occurrence. Among these factors, the intensified maximum potential intensity caused by the significant warming along China coast is the most important factor, most likely contributed by global warming instead of internal climate variability. This result is further confirmed by the CMIP6 model simulations.

Abstract:Sea surface temperature cooling (SSTC) is an important indicator of the ocean response to typhoons and is a factor in the evolution of typhoons. Understanding the intricate mechanisms underlying the SSTC induced by different typhoons is important. Based on the numerical simulation, we investigated the SSTC induced by typhoons Megi (2010), Linfa (2015), and Sarika (2011), which had relatively similar tracks in the South China Sea. As the strongest (weakest) typhoon, Megi (Sarika) induced the largest (smallest) SSTC, which is consistent with the traditional understanding that stronger typhoons usually induce larger SSTC than weaker typhoons. However, the SSTC induced by the moderate typhoon Linfa was nearly comparable to that induced by Megi, while Linfa had a wind power input an order of magnitude smaller. A comparison of near-inertial waves (NIWs) induced by Linfa and Megi showed that the former contained a larger proportion of high modes, substantially contributing to vertical shear. Consequently, the vertical mixing coefficient during Linfa reached one third of that during Megi. Because the SSTC is primarily influenced by vertical mixing, which is dominated by vertical diffusion at the mixed layer depth, the relatively strong vertical mixing coefficient and large temperature gradient during Linfa ultimately resulted in the SSTC nearly comparable to that induced by Megi. The results of this study enhance the understanding of typhoon-induced SSTC.

Abstract:Tropical cyclone (TC) intensification over marginal seas, especially rapid intensification (RI), often poses great threat to lives and properties in coastal regions and is subject to large forecast errors. It is thus important to understand the characteristics of TC intensification and the involved key factors affecting TC intensification over marginal seas. In this study, the 6-hourly TC best-track data from Shanghai Typhoon Institute of China Meteorological Administration, ERA-Interim reanalysis data, and TRMM satellite rainfall products are used to analyze and compare the climatological characteristics and key factors of different intensification stratifications over the marginal seas of China (MSC) and the western North Pacific (WNP) during 1980–2018. The statistical results show that TC intensification over the MSC is more likely to occur when TCs experience relatively large intensities, weak vertical wind shear, small translation perpendicular to the coastline, relatively high fullness, strong upper-level divergence, low-level relative vorticity, and high inner-core precipitation rate. The box difference index method is used to quantify the relative contributions of these factors to TC RI. Results show that the initial (relative) intensity contributes the most to TC RI over both the MSC and the WNP. The inner-core precipitation rate and translation perpendicular to the coastline are of second importance to TC RI over the MSC, while both vertical wind shear and TC fullness are crucial to TC RI over the WNP. These findings may help understand TC activity over the MSC and provide a basis for improving intensity prediction of TCs in the MSC.

Abstract:Forecasting rapid intensification (RI) of the South China Sea (SCS) tropical cyclones (TCs) remains an operational challenge, mainly owing to the incomplete understanding of its physical mechanisms. Based on TC best-track data, atmospheric analysis data, and sea surface temperature data, this study compares temporal evolution characteristics of environmental conditions from the previous 24 h to the onset time for RI and non-RI TCs in the SCS during 2000–2018, and then identifies key factors for RI of the SCS TCs using the box difference index and stepwise regression. A combination of strong divergence in the upper troposphere and strong convergence in the boundary layer, weak deep-layer vertical wind shear, fast storm translation speed, and high TC intensification potential (i.e., maximum potential intensity minus current intensity) north of the storm center at the previous 24 h are favorable for RI of the SCS TCs, and their importance for RI is in descending order. The results may shed light on operational forecasting of rapid intensification of the SCS TCs.

Abstract:The differences in the characteristics of the rapid intensification (RI) during the TCs that form in the SCS (referred as local TCs) and that enter the SCS from the western North Pacific (WNP; referred as entering TCs) have not been well studied, which could contribute the inaccuracy of current TC intensity forecast in the SCS. In this study, we used TC observations, reanalysis data and model experiments to analyze the RI occurrences during local TCs and entering TCs in 1980‒2016. We found that the significant interannual and interdecadal variations in RI occurrences during local eastward-moving TCs were related to the strong intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) over the SCS and the WNP under La Niña conditions. RI during local westward-moving TCs showed insignificant variations as a result of the complex interactions among the monsoon trough, ISO and the large-scale circulation. RI during entering TCs showed strong interdecadal variations, with increased RI after 1997, even though the total number of entering TCs has decreased since 1997, which is a result of a higher number of entering TCs in the northwestern quadrant of the WNP, a stronger ISO and weak vertical windshear over the SCS and east of the Philippines under negative phase of Pacific Decadal Oscillation. The different variations and related mechanisms of RI indicates that distinct forecasting factors should be considered for intensity prediction during local eastward- and westward-moving TCs and entering TCs.

Abstract:Typhoon Vicente (2012) underwent an extreme rapid intensification (RI) over the northern South China Sea just before its landfall in south China. The extreme RI, the sudden track deflection, and the inner-and outer-core structures of Vicente were reasonably reproduced in an Advanced Research version of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF-ARW) Model simulation. The evolutions of the axisymmetric inner-core radar reflectivity and the primary circulation of the simulated Vicente before its landfall were verified against the Doppler radar observations. Two intensification stages were identified: 1) the asymmetric intensification stage (i.e., RI onset), represented by a relatively slow intensification rate accompanied by a distinct eyewall contraction; and 2) the axisymmetric RI stage with very slow eyewall contraction. Results from a storm-scale tangential wind tendency budget indicated that the primary spinup mechanism during the first stage was the radial eddy momentum transport, which was beneficial to accelerate primary circulation inside the radius of maximum wind (RMW) and thus conducive to eyewall contraction. In contrast, the principal spinup mechanism during the second stage was mainly ascribed to the forced secondary circulation in response to diabatic heating in the eyewall and boundary layer friction, which efficiently transported the absolute angular momentum radially inward and vertically upward to increase the primary circulation in the eyewall region throughout the troposphere. Further analysis revealed that the interaction between the monsoon circulation and storm-scale vorticity anomalies played an important role in erecting the tilted vortex and spinning up the midtropospheric TC circulation during the first stage.

Abstract:In Part I of this study, the role of environmental monsoon flow in the onset of rapid intensification (RI) of Typhoon Vicente (2012) was discussed. In this Part II, key inner-core processes that effectively resist environmental vertical wind shear during RI onset are investigated. The convective precipitation shield (CPS) embedded in the downshear convergence zone plays a vital role in preconditioning the tropical cyclone (TC) vortex before RI. The CPS induces a mesoscale positive vorticity band (PVB) characterized by vortical hot tower structures upstream and shallower structures (~4 km) downstream. Multiple mesovortices form successively along the PVB and are detached from the PVB at its downstream end, rotating cyclonically around the TC center. The sufficient amount of vorticity anomalies in the PVB facilitates the upscale growth of a mesovortex into a reformed inner vortex, which eventually replaces the parent TC vortex (i.e., downshear reformation), leading to RI onset. The timing of downshear reformation is closely related to the gradually enhancing convective activity in the CPS, which is likely triggered/enhanced by increased surface heat fluxes in the downshear-left quadrant. Results from vorticity budget analyses suggest that convection in the CPS contributes to the vertical development of the tilted reformed inner vortex largely through tilting horizontal vorticity and advecting vorticity upward. The enhanced midlevel inner vortex precesses more quickly into the upshear flank and is concurrently advected toward the low-level inner vortex, resulting in vertical alignment of the reformed inner vortex and parent TC vortex at the end of downshear reformation.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid development of the wind industry is accompanied by increasing environmental impacts. Currently, there is a lack of research on the impacts of offshore wind farm (OWF) on tropical cyclone (TC) intensity, including the mechanisms involved. This research is carried out by using a coupled and an uncoupled numerical model to investigate the impact of OWF on an autumn TC in the northeastern South China Sea. The results show that the wind speed deficit caused by OWF leads to an increase in surface pressure on the inflow side. This causes the surface pressure in the TC periphery to increase by advection, even if the TC is some distance away from the OWF. The increase in pressure gradient from the periphery to the TC center enhances the TC secondary circulation, thereby intensifying the TC. When the TC enters the OWF, the above mechanisms weaken and the ocean dominates the TC intensification. This is because the reduction in wind speed caused by the OWF results in a weaker sea surface current velocity, which weakens the flow of upstream cold water into the OWF, warming the sea surface temperature (SST) within the OWF. This implies that the horizontal gradient of the local SST is an important factor to be considered in the development of OWF. Sensitivity experiments indicate that OWF can also intensify other types of TC, and that higher cut‐out wind speeds lead to stronger intensification effects. These results also provide a new perspective on TC intensity forecasts.

Abstract:Abstract Tropical Cyclones (TCs) are devastating natural disasters. Analyzing four decades of global TC data, here we find that among all global TC-active basins, the South China Sea (SCS) stands out as particularly difficult ocean for TCs to intensify, despite favorable atmosphere and ocean conditions. Over the SCS, TC intensification rate and its probability for a rapid intensification (intensification by ≥ 15.4 m s −1 day −1 ) are only 1/2 and 1/3, respectively, of those for the rest of the world ocean. Originating from complex interplays between astronomic tides and the SCS topography, gigantic ocean internal tides interact with TC-generated oceanic near-inertial waves and induce a strong ocean cooling effect, suppressing the TC intensification. Inclusion of this interaction between internal tides and TC in operational weather prediction systems is expected to improve forecast of TC intensity in the SCS and in other regions where strong internal tides are present.

Abstract:Buoy-based observations of surface waves during three typhoons in the South China Sea were used to obtain the wave characteristics. With the local wind speeds kept below 35ms(-1), the surface waves over an area with a radius 5 times that of the area in which the maximum sustained wind was found were mainly dominated by wind-wave components, and the wave energy distribution was consistent with fetch-limited waves. Swells dominated the surface waves at the front of and outside the central typhoon region. Next, the dynamics of the typhoon waves were studied numerically using a state-of-the-art third-generation wave model. Wind forcing errors made a negligible contribution to the surface wave results obtained using hindcasting. Near-realistic wind fields were constructed by correcting the idealized wind vortex using in situ observational data. If the different sets of source terms were further considered for the forcing stage of the typhoon, which was defined as the half inertial period before and after the typhoon arrival time, the best model performance had mean relative biases and root-mean-square errors of -0.7% and 0.76m, respectively, for the significant wave height, and -3.4% and 1.115s, respectively, for the peak wave period. Different sets of source terms for wind inputs and whitecapping breaking dissipation were also used and the results compared. Finally, twin numerical experiments were performed to investigate the importance of nonlinear wave-wave interactions on the spectrum formed. There was evidence that nonlinear wave-wave interactions efficiently transfer wave energy from high frequencies to low frequencies and prevent double-peak structures occurring in the frequency-based spectrum.
Seasonal lock of rapidly intensifying typhoons over the South China offshore in early fall

Abstract:The best track data from Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) was used to analyze the tracks and strengths of typhoons over the South China offshore (SCO) between Hainan and Taiwan islands during 1961 to 2010 and find the seasonal lock of the rapid intensified typhoons. After the physical decomposition of atmospheric variables, seasonal winds forced by land-sea heating variations have revealed that (1) during mid-summer the subtropical monsoon trough is located along the Yangtze Rive and its southern basin, which results in a southwesterly monsoon flow prevailing over the SCO; (2) during fall the subtropical monsoon trough shifts to the middle South China Sea, and it cannot change the intensification of typhoon; and (3) in early fall the subtropical monsoon trough is in the SCO, so that some of typhoons would be very likely to intensify rapidly once they enter this region.
The Effects of Upper-Ocean Sea Temperatures and Salinity on the Intensity Change of Tropical Cyclones over the Western North Pacific and the South China Sea: An Observational Study

Abstract:With increasing air and sea temperatures, the thermodynamic environments over the oceans are becoming more favourable for the development of intense tropical cyclones (TCs) with rapid intensification (RI). The South China coastal region consists of highly densely populated cities, especially over the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. Intense TCs maintaining their strength or the RI of TCs close to the coastal region can present substantial forecasting challenges and have significant potential impacts on the coastal population. This study investigates the effect of sea-surface and sub-surface temperatures and salinity on the intensification of five TCs, namely Super Typhoon Hato in 2017, Super Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018, and Typhoon Talim, Super Typhoon Saola, and Severe Typhoon Koinu in 2023, which have significantly affected the South China coastal region and triggered high TC warning signals in Hong Kong in the past few years. This analysis utilised the Hong Kong Observatory's TC best-track and intensity data, along with sea temperature and salinity profiles generated using the China Ocean ReAnalysis version 2 (CORA2) product from the National Marine Data and Information Service of China. It was found that high sea-surface temperatures (SST) of 30 °C or above for a depth of about 20 m, low sea-surface salinity (SSS) levels of 33.8 psu or below for a depth of at least 20 m, and strong salinity stratification of at least 0.6 psu per 100 m depth might offer useful hints for predicting the RI of TCs over the western North Pacific and the South China Sea (SCS) in operational forecasting, while noting other contributing environmental factors and synoptic flow patterns conducive to RI. This study represents the first documentation of sub-surface salinity's impact on some intense TCs traversing the SCS during 2017–2023 based on an observational study. Our aim is to supplement operational techniques for forecasting RI with some quantitative guidance based on upper-level ocean observations of temperatures and salinity, on top of well-known but more rapidly changing dynamical factors like low-level convergence, weak vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergent outflow, as forecasted with numerical weather prediction models. This study will also encourage further research to refine the analysis of quantitative contributions from different RI factors and the identification of essential features for developing AI models as one way to improve the forecasting of TC RI before the TC makes landfall near the PRD, with due consideration given to the effect of freshwater river discharge from the Pearl River.

Abstract:One of the greatest challenges in tropical weather forecasting is the rapid intensification (RI) of the tropical cyclone (TC), during which its one-minute maximum sustained wind speed increases at least 30 knots per 24 hours. Here we identify and elucidate the climatic conditions that are critical to the frequency and location of the RI on annual, intraseasonal, and interannual time scales. Whereas RI and formation share common environmental preferences, we found that the percentage of TCs with RI varies annually and from year to year. In August, only 30% of TC actually experiences RI, in contrast to the annual maximum of 47% in November. The proportion of RI in July–September is higher during El Niño years (53%) than the corresponding one in the La Niña years (37%). Three climate factors may contribute to the increase in the proportion of RI: the southward shift in the monthly or seasonal mean location of the TC formation, the increase in the low-level westerly meridional shear vorticity, and the decrease in northerly vertical shear. When the mean latitude of TC formation increases, the mixed-layer heat content decreases while TC’s inertial stability increases; both are more detrimental to the RI than to TC formation because the RI requires large amount of latent heat energy being extracted efficiently from the ocean mixed layer and requires accelerated low-level radial inflow that carries latent heat reaching the inner core region.We further demonstrate that the RI frequency in the Philippine Sea and South China Sea can be predicted 10 to 30 days in advance based on the convective anomalies in the equatorial western Pacific (5° S–5° N, 130°–150° E) on intraseasonal time scale. The Niño 3.4 SSTA in June is a potential predictor for the peak TC season (July–September) RI activity in the southeast quadrant of the western North Pacific (0–20° N, 140–180° E).The RI is an essential characteristic of category 4 and 5 hurricanes and super typhoons because all category 4 and 5 hurricanes in the Atlantic basin and 90% of the super typhoons in the western North Pacific experience at least one RI process in their life cycles. Over the past 40 years, the annual total of RI in the western North Pacific shows pronounced interdecadal variation but no significant trend. This result suggests that the number of supper typhoons has no upward trend in the past 40 years. Our results also suggest that when the mean latitude, where the tropical storms form, shifts southward (either seasonally or from year to year) the proportion of super typhoon or major hurricane will likely increase. This shift is determined by large scale circulation change rather than local SST effects. This idea differs from the current notion that increasing SST can lead to more frequent occurrence of category 4 or 5 hurricanes through local thermodynamics.

Shallow Coastal Water Responses During the Near Landfall Intensification of Tropical Cyclones in the South China Sea

Abstract:Shallow coastal seawater response during the passage of near-landfall intensification (NLI) tropical cyclones (TCs) and non-NLI TCs was examined using oceanic and atmospheric reanalysis data and observations. The sea surface temperature ahead of the NLI-TC track is maintained or even increases when NLI-TC is approaching the land. The magnitude of the wind stress, which plays an important role in the NLI process, is related to the zonal surface wind on the right side of the tracks. Coastal mixed layer warming can be explained by Ekman transport under sustained wind stress due to surface wind forcing. The successive deepening of the coastal ocean boundary layer and the increase in warming in the subsurface seawater temperature by an average of 0.3°C, could maintain thermal capacity in a certain degree. This shallow coastal water response could partly explain the NLI progress in the northern South China Sea, indicating the importance of coastal ocean dynamics and air-sea interactions.

Abstract:The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis datasets are employed to examine the large-scale characteristics of rapidly intensifying western North Pacific tropical cyclones (TCs). The results show that of all 27 581 samples for the period 1970-2007, 85%, 65%, and 47% of all tropical depressions (TDs), tropical storms (TSs), and typhoons (TYs), respectively, intensify. Of the 1214 TCs, 18%, 70%, 30%, and 10% of all tropical cyclones, supertyphoons, severe typhoons, and typhoons, respectively, underwent rapid intensification (RI) at least once during their lifetime. Three kinds of cases-RI, slow change in intensity (SC), and rapid decay (RD)-during the period 1982-2007 are used to analyze the large-scale conditions associated with them. The comparison shows that the RI cases tend to occur farther south and east than the non-RI cases. In addition, the RI cases have a more westerly component of motion and intensify more during the preceding 12 h than do the non-RI cases. For the non-RI cases, the SC cases tend to have a lower initial intensity and a lower speed of motion than do the RD cases. Also, the RI cases are farther from their maximum potential intensity and develop in warmer water, lower vertical shear, and more easterly upper-tropospheric flow than do the non-RI cases. The probability of RI for TCs is estimated by using the rapid intensify index (RII) developed in this study for the western North Pacific basin. The verification based upon the cross validation shows that the RII is skillful relative to climatology.
Environmental Influences on the Intensity Change of Tropical Cyclones in the Western North Pacific

Abstract:The atmospheric and oceanic conditions are examined during different stages of the lifecycle of western North Pacific tropical cyclones (TCs), with the intention to understand how the environment affects the intensity change of TCs in this area. It is found that the intensification usually occurs when the underlying sea surface temperature (SST) is higher than 26°C. TCs usually experience a rapid intensification when the SST is higher than 27.5°C while lower than 29.5°C. However, TCs decay or only maintain its intensity when the SST is lower than 26°C. The intensifying TCs usually experience a low-to-moderate vertical wind shear (2–10 m s −1 ). The larger the vertical wind shear, the slower the TCs strengthen. In addition, the convective available potential energy (CAPE) is much smaller in the developing stage than in the formation stage of TCs. For the rapidly intensifying TCs, the changes of SST, CAPE, and vertical wind shear are usually small, indicating that the rapid intensification of TCs occurs when the evolution of the environment is relatively slow.
