Abstract:Case-based reasoning (CBR) often shows significant promise for improving the effectiveness of design support in mould design, which is a domain strong in practice but poor in theory. However, existing CBR systems lack semantic understanding, which is important for intelligent knowledge retrieval in design support system. This hinders the application of CBR in injection mould design. In order to develop an intelligent CBR system and meet the need of design support for injection mould design, this paper integrates ontology technology into a CBR system by constructing domain ontology as case-base with a new method, in which two means of acquisition are combined, one is acquiring ontology from existing ontologies, the other from established engineering knowledge resources, and proposing a new semantic retrieval method as the first grade case retrieval. Numerical measurement is also employed as the second grade case retrieval, which adopts various methods to calculate different types of attribute values. A case is executed to illustrate the use of proposed CBR system, then a lot of experiments are organized to evaluate its performance and the result shows that the proposed approach outperforms existing CBR systems.

Abstract:Case-based reasoning (CBR) has shown significant superiority in creative application (innovation) in many areas, especially those strong in practice but poor in theory, such as engineering design. But existing CBR systems have poor semantic understanding, which seriously hampers their creative application. So this paper mainly focuses on the research of case retrieval of CBR system and proposes an intelligent case retrieval method by integrating ontology technology into CBR system. The proposed method has enough semantic understanding ability and can help designers find the desired case, from which designers can gain enlightenment and inspiration for developing new ideas. The work of this research is mainly that adopt the combination of two ontology acquisition means to improve domain knowledge acquisition and propose a new semantic retrieval method to improve semantic understanding of case retrieval. At last a kind of typical engineering design – injection mold design is taken an example to validate the proposed method and Lots of experiments are organized to test the performance and the results show that the proposed approach outperforms existing models.

Abstract:To integrate design information and share knowledge and experience in mold cavity design, knowledge based engineering (KBE) is introduced into the design process. Feature technology and knowledge engineering are fully applied in this system. Feature technology is used to integrate design information in all design phases and knowledge engineering is dedicated to solve the problem of sharing knowledge and experience. A demonstration case is presented to show that KBE can effectively improve the design efficiency of mold cavity and accelerate the process of mold development.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the design and manufacturing process of moldin factories in China, and presents a new idea that detail design of mold and ordering mold base can be carried on in concurrent time after the mold base is designed. This paper introduces the intelligent system for plastic injection mold base design, which applies the technique of Case-based Reasoning. According to the view of software engineering, this paper provides data-flow diagram and structure of the system. The whole system is based on the parametric mold parts library and presents an interactive approach for the users to design the mold base. It can be modified to be a specific mold base system according to the requirements of the users. And it also can be applied to further design of the plastic injection mold structure.

Abstract:This paper introduces a method of estimating machining processing-hour of injection mould using case-based reasoning.Case presentation,case retrieval,case adaptation and case-library update in this CBR system are described in detail.In order to overcome the handicap in obtaining case feature weights,a genetic algorithm(GA) approach is designed and implemented to optimize case feature weights automatically by the case data stored in case-base.A prototype system has been developed based on the above method.Then an example of injection mould has been used to test the system,and the result indicates that it is valid to estimate machining processing-hour of injection mould with the method mationed above.

Abstract:Mechanical design, mainly depending on the expert experience, is a complicated, uncertain and unstructured activity. Although mechanical products can be designed by skilled designers, the design process is still time-consuming and experience-dependent. To solve this problem, this paper develops a system applying case-based reasoning (CBR) methodology to support mechanical design process. In the CBR system, the case-base is divided into two parts, one is standard case-base and the other is design case-base, which can improve the matching efficiency of the standardization parts. A retrieval algorithm integrated with the clustering technique is proposed to locate the similar cases in the case-base. In addition, a test case-base is proposed to illustrate the feasibility of the CBR system.

Abstract:System integration of injection molding part modeling and analysis is a hotspot. For injection molding part/mould, the course of CAD-CAE has problems of intelligence-absence and information-loss; while the course of CAE-CAD also has the problem of lack of information coupling and expert reasoning. A case-based reasoning (CBR) system is used to obtain the proper process parameters. Then combining the output of CBR with the filtered information from CAD, CAE software is applied to simulate the molding process. Coupling the feature information from CAD with output from CAE, an intelligent deficiency interpretative expert system is set up. The focus of this paper includes the CBR system for process parameters optimization, intelligent expert system of CAE post-processing and the routing of data flow. The idea of circle round of CAD/CAE is proposed to facilitate the intelligent integration of feature-based modeling and analysis of injection molding part.

Abstract:CBR(case-based reasoning) is a reasoning method that demands traditional experiences and solves the new case by memory structures. A CBR system was used for evaluating the manufacturing cost of injection mould. Case indexing, case retrieval, case adaptation, case learning and neural network are all the emphasis. A comprehensive costs model considering mould manufacturing costs, tax expenses, general administrative costs and design fees was discussed. This model is usable to injection mould price evaluation.

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of the injection molding process, an integrated intelligent model employing case-based reasoning (CBR) and fuzzy inference has been constructed, considering the molding personnel's thought during the trial runs and the advantages of CBR and fuzzy inference. The ideology of CBR is adopted for the initial process parameters setting, which simulates the molding personnel's behavior that they often recall a previous case and set the initial process parameters of the current one by referring to that old case. The case design and matching have been described in detail, and four case adaptation strategies have been discussed. The ideology of fuzzy inference based on expert knowledge and practical experience reflects the test moldings for defects correction and process parameters optimization. Therefore, a fuzzy inference model was built for the correction and optimization process. Its key implementation techniques, such as fuzzification and defuzzification strategies, fuzzy rules definition, membership functions, etc, have been discussed. Finally, a corresponding intelligent system has been developed that is integrated with the injection machine by communicating with the controller. The system can be used to determine the initial process parameters and optimize them online. An experimental study has been carried out for verification. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:A Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) method, which was introduced to determine the manufacture time quota of injection mould, was put forward. As two key technologies of the method, case retrieval and case modification were focused. To improve the efficiency and accuracy of case retrieval, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based hierarchy retrieval model was proposed to optimize the feature weights. To improve the accuracy of case modification,a relative value and experience mixed modification strategy was put forward to combine and optimize the evaluation rules. Finally, an example was applied to verify the validity of the method.

Abstract:The shortened time-to-market of new products requires experts from multiple disciplines to cooperate in product development. In this collaborative product development environment, an Internet-based conceptual design support system for Injection moulding is developed. It can help designers to put forward feasible design solutions quickly and provide strong support for collaborative design. The architecture, implementation and evaluation of this system are discussed in this paper. The proposed system makes fully use of component-based web technology and has a flexible distributed architecture. A hybrid neural network and genetic algorithm approach is also adopted for more accurate and efficient retrieval. Experiment results indicate it is superior to conventional systems in accuracy and time.

Abstract:Although manufacturing technology has been developing rapidly, injection molding is still widely used for fabricating plastic parts with complex geometries and precise dimensions. Since the occurrence of faults in injection molding is inevitable, process optimization is desirable. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods are being successfully used for optimization in different branches of science and technology. In this paper, we review the application of one such method, case-based reasoning (CBR), to injection molding. CBR is an AI approach for knowledge representation and manipulation which considers successful solutions of past problems that are likely to serve as candidate solutions for a given problem. This method is being used increasingly in academic and industrial applications. Here, we review CBR systems that are used in injection molding for different purposes, such as process design, processing parameters, fault diagnose, and enhancement of quality control. In addition, we discuss trends for utilization of CBR in different phases of injection molding. The most significant challenges associated with application of CBR to injection molding are also discussed. Finally, the review is concluded by contemplating on some open research areas and future prospects.

Abstract:A hybrid reasoning model was proposed in which CBR (case-based reasoning) was applied to the conceptual design and RBR (rule-based reasoning) was applied to the detailed design after research of the design process and domain knowledge of the aero-engine turbine blade investment casting mold design fi eld. In the conceptual design stage, the representation and retrieval technologies were researched which improve the retrieval effi ciency. Meanwhile, RBR was used to modify the retrieval result. The experimentation shows that the approach in this study can be used to obtain a more satisfactory design result.

Abstract:To solve the problems in turbine blade investment casting die design process such as long design time,lacking of expert experience and low level of intelligence,knowledge-based engineering (KBE) was introduced in the turbine blade investment casting die design field. The key technologies of the intelligent design method were researched and a prototype system was developed. A hybrid reasoning model was prompted in which case-based reasoning (CBR) was applied to conceptual design and rule-based reasoning (RBR) was applied to parts design after research the design process and domain knowledge of casting die. In the conceptual design stage,a retrieval model which integrated nearest neighbor approach and knowledge-based retrieval approach was prompted to improve the retrieval efficiency. Meanwhile,RBR was used to modify the retrieval result. The practical application results indicate that this system can reuse the expert experience efficiently and heighten the die design efficiency and quality.

The model describes the complex process of injection molding with a view to the characters and advantages of CBR and fuzzy theory. And it can be used to determine the initial process parameters and optimize the process parameters on-line. The key implementation technologies of the model are described in detail, including determining the initial process parameters based on CBR, correcting defects, optimizing process parameters based on fuzzy inference, etc. A corresponding intelligent system was developed which is integrated with injection machine by communicating with the controller.

Abstract:When producing special-shape spring in CNC spring coiler, the setup of the coiler is often a manual work using a trial-and-error method. As a result, the setup of coiler consumes so much time and becomes the bottleneck of the spring production process. In order to cope with this situation, this paper proposes an automatic generation system of setup for CNC spring coiler using case-based reasoning (CBR). The core of the study contains: (1) integrated reasoning model of CBR system; (2) spatial shape describe of special-shape spring based on feature; (3) coiling case representation using shape feature matrix; and (4) case similarity measure algorithm. The automatic generation system has implemented with C + + Builder 6. 0 and is helpful in improving the automaticity and efficiency of spring coiler.
