Abstract:A sliding mode-like fuzzy logic control (SMFC) algorithm for a class of high order nonlinear systems is presented. The fuzzy logic controller obtained is equivalent to a sliding mode controller. New adaptive laws for the parameters of the fuzzy logic system (FLS) are adopted in order to self-tune the so-called dead zone parameters. The robustness and the resistance ability to the external perturbations of systems are improved and the chattering of the sliding mode control (SMC) is eliminated. The simulation results of a numerical example show that the control algorithm is efficient and feasible.

Abstract:An adaptive terminal sliding mode control (SMC) technique is proposed to deal with the tracking problem for a class of high-order nonlinear dynamic systems. It is shown that a function augmented sliding hyperplane can be used to develop a new terminal sliding mode for high-order nonlinear systems. A terminal SMC controller based on Lyapunov theory is designed to force the state variables of the closed-loop system to reach and remain on the terminal sliding mode, so that the output tracking error then converges to zero in finite time which can be set arbitrarily. An adaptive mechanism is introduced to estimate the unknown parameters of the upper bounds of system uncertainties. The estimates are then used as controller parameters so that the effects of uncertain dynamics can be eliminated. It is also shown that the stability of the closed-loop system can be guaranteed with the proposed control strategy. The simulation of a numerical example is provided to show the effectiveness of the new method.

Abstract:This paper brought the feedback particle swarm optimization algorithm(FLPSO) into the extremum seeking control(ESC),applied the idea of tracking problem which was first introduced into ESC by Zhang,and improved the performance of ESC.According to the simulation,the output of the control becomes relatively stable and the output of the performance function converges to optimum rapidly.The algorithm improves the problem of output function oscillation existed in the algorithm combined with Gramm method.

Abstract:Highlights • A novel FOSMC scheme is developed for fractional order uncertain systems. • The control system is insensitive to multiple mismatched disturbances and uncertainties. • The convergence of the system states is accelerated without enlarging the chattering. To improve the control performance of the fractional order uncertain systems with multiple mismatched disturbances, an enhanced fractional order sliding mode control (FOSMC) method is developed in this paper. The multiple disturbances and uncertainties are estimated by the finite-time disturbance observers (FTDO) and a fractional order extended state observer (FOESO), respectively. A fractional order switching law is designed to provide a fast convergence mode for the system states. Then a novel FOSMC law is developed by incorporating the feedforward compensation, the fractional order switching law, and the auxiliary state for input saturation. The proposed method is applied to numerical examples and to a motor speed control problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by the performance comparisons with some existing control methods.

Abstract:This article investigates the asymptotic stability of fractional-order (FO) systems with uncertainty and time-varying delay based on the sliding mode control (SMC) method. First, based on the SMC method, a suitable integral type fractional-order sliding mode surface (FOSMS) is designed and the dynamic equations of FO systems under SMC are obtained. Second, by inequality techniques, the condition for asymptotic stability of the FO system has been mathematically established. Then, a novel adaptive SMC law is introduced, which can make sure the accessibility of sliding mode surfaces (SMS). Finally, the feasibility of the results obtained in this paper is verified through a simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, the sliding-mode control method was used to control a class of general nonlinear fractional-order systems which covers a wide class of chaotic systems. A novel sliding manifold with an additional nonlinear part which achieved better control performance was designed. Furthermore, a novel fixed-time reaching law with a fractional adaptive gain is proposed, where the reaching time to the sliding manifold is determined by the first positive zero of a Mittag–Leffler function and is independent of initial conditions. We have provided some instructions on tuning the parameters of the proposed reaching law to avoid exacerbating the chattering phenomenon. Finally, simulation examples are presented to validate all results.

Abstract:Compared with integral-order calculus, fractional calculus is better at depicting the real process with memory property and history-dependent property. As a result, this work investigates a class of nonlinear strict-feedback fractional-order systems and presents a novel control strategy. To begin, in order to cope with the unknown drift functions and unmeasurable system states, fuzzy logic systems (FLSs)and a robust fractional-order state observer are designed. Second, in order to further reduce the FLS approximation error and state estimation error, a hyperbolic tangent function is implemented. Third, the problem of the differential explosion caused by repeated differentiation when employing the backstepping technique when designing a control scheme is also overcome without the help of a command filter or dynamic surface control. Finally, theoretical analysis and simulation results show that by combining the backstepping procedure with the sliding mode technique, not only is it possible to achieve strong robustness against unknown drift function and unknown external time-varying disturbance, but also that the tracking error can converge to the vicinity of the origin.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. This paper presents an advanced control strategy based on Fractional-Order Sliding Mode Control (FO-SMC), which introduces a robust solution to significantly improve the reliability of robotic manipulator systems and increase its control performance. The proposed FO-SMC strategy includes a two-key term-based Fractional Sliding Function (FSF) that presents the main contribution of this work. Additionally, a fractional-order-based Lyapunov stability analysis is developed for a class of nonlinear systems to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the closed loop system. Four FSF-based versions of the designed FO-SMC are studied and discussed. Various scenarios of the proposed control strategy are tested on a 3-degree-of-freedom SCARA robotic arm and compared to recent FO-SMC works, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new proposed control strategy to (i) ensure the asymptotic stability, (ii) achieve a smooth start-up, (iii) cancel the static error, giving a good tracking trajectory, and (iv) reduce the control torques, yielding a consumed energy minimization.

Abstract:The high-order fully actuated systems (HOFASs) approach can only completely eliminate known nonlinearities. However, the practical systems often encounter unknown nonlinearities, including disturbances and faults. Therefore, this article studies a class of nonlinear HOFAS with component faults and disturbances. By applying the HOFAS theory, a novel integrated sliding mode fault-tolerant control strategy is proposed to ensure the stability of the closed-loop system. The state feedback and output feedback controllers are designed, respectively. For output feedback control, an extended state observer is designed to estimate system states. Once the HOFAS model is established, the designed controller and extended state observer can be directly implemented, facilitating the analysis and design of the control system. And the stability analysis does not depend on the complexity of the nonlinear functions. Finally, a numerical simulation example shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper addresses a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with disturbances that are challenging to model by proposing a novel model-free adaptive sliding mode control (MFASMC) scheme based on a discrete-time extended state observer (DESO). Initially, leveraging the pseudo partial derivative (PPD) concept in the model-free adaptive control (MFAC) framework, the discrete-time nonlinear model is converted into a full-form dynamic linearization (FFDL) model. Secondly, using the FFDL data model, a discrete sliding mode controller is designed. A discrete integral sliding mode surface is chosen to mitigate chattering during the reaching phase, and a hyperbolic tangent function with minimal slope variation is selected for smoother switching control. Furthermore, a DESO is designed to estimate uncertainties in the discrete system, enabling real-time compensation for the controller. Finally, a genetic optimization algorithm is employed for parameter tuning to minimize the time cost associated with selecting control parameters. The design process of this scheme relies solely on the data of the controlled system, without depending on a mathematical model. The proposed DESO-MFASMC scheme is tested through simulations using a typical numerical equation and the existing EFG-BC/320 electric heavy-duty forklift from the Quzhou Special Equipment Inspection Center. Simulation results show that the proposed method is significantly superior to the traditional MFAC and PID control methods in tracking accuracy and robustness when dealing with nonlinear disturbance of the system. The DESO-MFASMC scheme proposed in this paper not only shows its advantages in theory but also verifies its effectiveness and practicability in engineering through practical application.

Abstract:Chaos synchronization of uncertain fractional order chaotic systems subject to modelling uncertainty is investigated. A novel synchronization strategy based on fractional sliding mode control is developed for fractional order chaotic systems. Sliding mode control is generalized to fractional order systems, and fractional order sliding mode reaching law and fractional order sliding mode surface are designed respectively. Fractional candidate Lyapunov functionals designed in cooperation with fractional order power law inequalities are applied to analyze the Mittag-Leffler stability, and then the error system can realize global asymptotic convergence. Ultimately illustrative examples are presented in simulation experiments to validate our proposed synchronization strategy.

Abstract:Abstract This paper introduces a novel approach aimed at enhancing the control performance of a specific class of unknown multiple-input and multiple-output nonlinear systems. The proposed method involves the utilization of a fractional-order fuzzy sliding mode controller, which is implemented through online fractional-order reinforcement learning (FOFSMC-FRL). First, the proposed approach leverages two Takagi–Sugeno–Kang (TSK) fuzzy neural network actors. These actors approximate both the equivalent and switch control parts of the sliding mode control. Additionally, a critic TSK fuzzy neural network is employed to approximate the value function of the reinforcement learning process. Second, the FOFSMC-FRL parameters undergo online adaptation using an innovative fractional-order Levenberg–Marquardt learning method. This adaptive mechanism allows the controller to continuously update its parameters based on the system’s behavior, optimizing its control strategy accordingly. Third, the stability and convergence of the proposed approach are rigorously examined using Lyapunov theorem. Notably, the proposed structure offers several key advantages as it does not depend on knowledge of the system dynamics, uncertainty bounds, or disturbance characteristics. Moreover, the chattering phenomenon, often associated with sliding mode control, is effectively eliminated without compromising the system’s robustness. Finally, a comparative simulation study is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of the proposed method over other control methods. Through this comparison, the effectiveness and performance advantages of the approach are validated.

Abstract:Since the Leibniz rule for integer-order derivatives of the product of functions, which includes a finite number of terms, is not true for fractional-order (FO) derivatives of that, all sliding mode control (SMC) methods introduced in the literature involved a very limited class of FO nonlinear systems. This article presents a solution for the unsolved problem of SMC of a class of FO nonstrict-feedback nonlinear systems with uncertainties. Using the Leibniz rule for the FO derivative of the product of two functions, which includes an infinite number of terms, it is shown that only one of these terms is needed to design a SMC law. Using this point, an algorithm is given to design the controller for reference tracking, that significantly reduces the number of design parameters, compared to the literature. Then, it is proved that the algorithm has a closed-form solution which presents a straightforward tool to the designer to obtain the controller. The solution is applicable to the systems with a mixture of integer-order and FO dynamics. Stability and finite-time convergence of the offered control law are also demonstrated. In the end, the availability of the suggested SMC is illustrated through a numerical example arising from a real system.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel quasi-Newton extremum seeking control method based on incremental recursive identification for a real-time optimization problem. The optimization of static map and dynamical system are both considered where the dynamics of the nonlinear system and the cost function to be minimized are unknown. Firstly, the proposed method only employs the measured function values to effectively estimate the time-varying gradient of the unknown cost function by using incremental recursive least square identification. Then, an extremum seeking control (ESC) approach based on the quasi-Newton direction is developed to improve convergence speed, which only requires the estimated gradient of the objective function without Hessian in-formation. Furthermore, the convergence properties of the proposed ESC method are established for static map and dynamical system. Finally, we demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed method using three examples.

Abstract:This article investigates a novel sliding model control approach for a class of nonlinear fractional order systems. In particular, the sliding surface with additional nonlinear part is designed by a Lyapunov-like function and one can achieve much more satisfying system performances by selecting suitable parameters. Moreover, a second-order switching law is generated from the commonly used adaptive switching law. Its properties are carefully discussed, and it is proven that the reaching time of the sliding surface can be guaranteed nonsensitive to the initial conditions with the second-order switching law, while the adaptive switching law cannot even guarantee the finite-time convergence. Then the stability of the closed-loop control system is rigorously analyzed via indirect Lyapunov method. Finally, simulation examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Abstract:In this paper, the robust control problem is investigated for fractional‐order nonlinear systems(FONS) with the unknown‐but‐bounded parametric uncertainties and the external disturbances. First, an H∞ adaptive observer is designed to estimate the system states and the unknown parameters. Then based on the observer, a fractional‐order sliding mode controller is designed and the asymptotic stability sufficient condition is derived for the closed‐loop system on the basis of Lyapunov stability criterion. The control strategy can not only realize the system stabilization, but also estimate the system unknown parameters and the system states. Moreover, a fractional‐order power type continuous function is adopted to replace the traditional sign function in the switch control component, the proposed method can avoid the chattering phenomenon. Abstract:This paper presents the design of an extremum seeking controller based on sliding modes and cyclic search for real-time optimization of non-linear multivariable dynamic systems. These systems have arbitrary relative degree, compensated by the technique of time-scaling. The resulting approach guarantees global convergence of the system output to a small neighborhood of the optimum point. To corroborate with the theoretical results, numerical simulations are presented considering a system with two inputs and one output, which rapidly converges to the optimal parameters of the objective function.

Abstract:This paper concentrates on the disturbances estimation and attenuation problem of a general class of the fractional-order systems. For this purpose, this paper proposes a fractional sliding-mode disturbance observer (FSMDO)-based control scheme, which is capable of mitigating the unknown disturbances asymptotically. Meanwhile, by incorporating a novel fractional sliding-mode controller into the proposed control scheme, the asymptotical convergence of trajectory tracking errors is guaranteed. The developed control scheme owns three attractive highlights: (1) it is suitable for the general fractional-order systems, including nonlinear systems and incommensurate systems; (2) the proposed FSMDO can estimate the unknown exogenous disturbances and system uncertainties timely and precisely; (3) nominal performance can be retained by compensating the observed disturbances in a feedforward manner, and thus, the robustness of the system can be strengthened. Illustrative examples are provided to show the availability and superiority of the presented FSMDO control method in terms of robust control. As compared with the conventional methods, the dynamic control performance of the closed-loop system can be improved.

Abstract:A novel fuzzy terminal sliding mode control (FTSMC) scheme is proposed for position tracking of a class of second-order nonlinear uncertain system. In the proposed scheme, we integrate input-output linearization technique to cancel the nonlinearities. By using a function-augmented sliding hyperplane, it is guaranteed that the output tracking error converges to zero in finite time which can be set arbitrarily. The proposed scheme eliminates reaching phase problem, so that the closed-loop system always shows invariance property to parameter uncertainties. Fuzzy logic systems are used to approximate the unknown system functions and switch item. Robust adaptive law is proposed to reduce approximation errors between true nonlinear functions and fuzzy systems, thus chattering phenomenon can be eliminated. Stability of the proposed control scheme is proved and the scheme is applied to an inverted pendulum system. Simulation studies are provided to confirm performance and effectiveness of the proposed control approach.

Abstract:In [22] a form of extremum seeking for control (ESC) was developed for the stabilization of uncertain nonlinear systems. In ESC the extremum seeker itself controls the systems through feedback rather than fine tuning a controller. The ESC results, and other related results, apply only to systems affine in control. However, in most physical systems the control effort enters the system's dynamics through a nonlinear function, such as an input with deadline and saturation. In this work, we utilize our previous results on ESC to develop stabilizing controllers for systems of practical interest that are non-affine in control.
