Abstract: The reachability problem for vector addition systems with states (VASS) has been shown to be \textsc{Ackermann}-complete. For every $k\geq 3$, a completeness result for the $k$-dimensional VASS reachability problem is not yet available. It is shown in this paper that the $3$-dimensional VASS reachability problem is in \textsc{Tower}, improving upon the current best upper bound $\mathbf{F}_7$ established by Leroux and Schmidt in 2019.

Abstract:The reachability problem for vector addition systems is a central problem of net theory. This problem is known to be decidable but the complexity is still unknown. Whereas the problem is EXPSPACE-hard, no elementary upper bounds complexity are known. In this paper we consider the reversible reachability problem. This problem consists to decide if two configurations are reachable one from each other, or equivalently if they are in the same strongly connected component of the reachability graph. We show that this problem is EXPSPACE-complete. As an application of the introduced materials we characterize the reversibility domains of a vector addition system.

New Lower Bounds for Reachability in Vector Addition Systems

Abstract:We investigate the dimension-parametric complexity of the reachability problem in vector addition systems with states (VASS) and its extension with pushdown stack (pushdown VASS). Up to now, the problem is known to be $\mathcal{F}_k$-hard for VASS of dimension $3k+2$ (the complexity class $\mathcal{F}_k$ corresponds to the $k$th level of the fast-growing hierarchy), and no essentially better bound is known for pushdown VASS. We provide a new construction that improves the lower bound for VASS: $\mathcal{F}_k$-hardness in dimension $2k+3$. Furthermore, building on our new insights we show a new lower bound for pushdown VASS: $\mathcal{F}_k$-hardness in dimension $\frac k 2 + 4$. This dimension-parametric lower bound is strictly stronger than the upper bound for VASS, which suggests that the (still unknown) complexity of the reachability problem in pushdown VASS is higher than in plain VASS (where it is Ackermann-complete).

Computing Reachable Sets of Linear Vector Fields Revisited

Abstract:The reachability problem is one of the most important issues in the verification of hybrid systems. But unfortunately the reachable sets for most of hybrid systems are not computable except for some special families. In our previous work, we identified a family of vector fields, whose state parts are linear with real eigenvalues, while input parts are exponential functions, and proved its reachability problem is decidable. In this paper, we investigate another family of vector fields, whose state parts are linear, but with pure imagine eigenvalues, while input parts are trigonometric functions, and prove its reachability problem is decidable also. To the best of our knowledge, the two families are the largest families of linear vector fields with a decidable reachability problem. In addition, we present an approach on how to abstract general linear dynamical systems to the first family. Comparing with existing abstractions for linear dynamical systems, experimental results indicate that our abstraction is more precise.

Abstract:The reachability problem is one of the most important issues in the verification of hybrid systems. Computing the reachable sets of differential equations is difficult, although computing the reachable sets of finite state machines is well developed. Hence, it is not surprising that the reachability of most of hybrid systems is undecidable. In this paper, we identify a family of vector fields and show its reachability problem is decidable. The family consists of all vector fields whose state parts are linear, while input parts are non-linear, possibly with exponential expressions. Such vector fields are commonly used in practice. To the best of our knowledge, the family is one of the most expressive families of vector fields with a decidable reachability problem. The decidability is achieved by proving the decidability of the extension of Tarski's algebra with some specific exponential functions, which has been proved in [21,22] due to Strzebonski. In this paper, we propose another decision procedure, which is more efficient when all constraints are open sets. The experimental results indicate the efficiency of our approach, even better than existing approaches based on approximation and numeric computation in general.

Abstract:An $\mathsf{F}_{d}$ upper bound for the reachability problem in vector addition systems with states (VASS) in fixed dimension is given, where $\mathsf{F}_d$ is the $d$-th level of the Grzegorczyk hierarchy of complexity classes. The new algorithm combines the idea of the linear path scheme characterization of the reachability in the $2$-dimension VASSes with the general decomposition algorithm by Mayr, Kosaraju and Lambert. The result improves the $\mathsf{F}_{d + 4}$ upper bound due to Leroux and Schmitz (LICS 2019).

Geometry of Reachability sets of Vector Addition Systems

Abstract:Vector Addition Systems (VAS), aka Petri nets, are a popular model of concurrency. The reachability set of a VAS is the set of configurations reachable from the initial configuration. Leroux has studied the geometric properties of VAS reachability sets, and used them to derive decision procedures for important analysis problems. In this paper we continue the geometric study of reachability sets. We show that every reachability set admits a finite decomposition into disjoint almost hybridlinear sets enjoying nice geometric properties. Further, we prove that the decomposition of the reachability set of a given VAS is effectively computable. As a corollary, we derive a simple algorithm for deciding semilinearity of VAS reachability sets, the first one since Hauschildt's 1990 algorithm. As a second corollary, we prove that the complement of a reachability set always contains an infinite linear set.

Abstract:This paper studies reachability problems in discrete time affine systems on simplices—that is, how to steer the states in a simplex to a target polytope in finite time. Reachability problems in a discrete time setting have several distinct features from those in a continuous time setting and the solvability depends not only on the simplex itself but also on the target polytope. In this paper we first study the case where the union of the simplex and the target polytope is convex. Then we generalize the results by dropping the convex assumption. For theoretical completeness, the problem of making a polytope positive invariant is considered as well. Finally, a temperature control system is presented to illustrate our results.

Abstract:Reachability is one of the most important behavioral properties of Petri nets and the past four decades have witnessed great efforts in developing various implementable methodologies in determining reachability of Petri nets. We propose in this paper a novel method for solving the fundamental equation in the reachability analysis, which has been known to be NP-complete. More specifically, by adopting a revised version of the cell enumeration method for an arrangement of hyperplanes in discrete geometry, we develop an efficient solution scheme to identify firing count vector solution(s) to the fundamental equation on a bounded integer set, with a complexity bound of O((nω)n–m), where n is the number of transitions, m is the number of places and ω is the upper bound of the number of firings for every transition.

Abstract:In 2015, it was shown that reachability for arbitrary directed graphs can be updated by first-order formulas after inserting or deleting single edges. Later, in 2018, this was extended for changes of size $\frac{\log n}{\log \log n}$, where $n$ is the size of the graph. Changes of polylogarithmic size can be handled when also majority quantifiers may be used. In this paper we extend these results by showing that, for changes of polylogarithmic size, first-order update formulas suffice for maintaining (1) undirected reachability, and (2) directed reachability under insertions. For classes of directed graphs for which efficient parallel algorithms can compute non-zero circulation weights, reachability can be maintained with update formulas that may use "modulo 2" quantifiers under changes of polylogarithmic size. Examples for these classes include the class of planar graphs and graphs with bounded treewidth. The latter is shown here. As the logics we consider cannot maintain reachability under changes of larger sizes, our results are optimal with respect to the size of the changes.

Abstract:Constrained reachability is a kind of quantitative path property, which is generally specified by multiphase until formulas originated in continuous stochastic logic. In this paper, through proposing a positive operator valued measure on the set of infinite paths, we develop an exact method to solve the constrained reachability problem for quantum Markov chains. The convergence rate of the reachability is also obtained. We then analyse the complexity of the proposed method, which turns out to be in polynomial-time w.r.t. the size of the classical state space and the dimension of the accompanied Hilbert space. Finally, our method is implemented and applied to a simple quantum protocol.

Abstract:Reachability and controllability of positive discrete-time switched linear systems are firstly studied in this paper. First, a theoretic equivalent condition for reachability is addressed. A sufficient condition is also presented, but a counterexample shows that it is not necessary. A verifiable equivalent condition is given for a class of systems. Next, we show that reachability and null controllability is equivalent to complete controllability. A equivalent condition for null controllability is addressed and a verifiable one is given for a class of systems.

Abstract:Two-player turn-based games on graphs (or game graphs for short) and their probabilistic versions have received increasing attention in computer science, especially in the formal verification of reactive systems. However, in the fuzzy setting, game graphs are yet to be addressed, although some practical applications, such as modeling fuzzy systems that interact with their environments, appeal to such models. To fill the gap, in this paper, we propose a fuzzy version of game graphs and focus on the fuzzy game graphs with reachability objectives, which we will refer to as fuzzy reachability games (FRGs). In an FRG, the goal of one player is tomaximize her truth value of reaching a given target set, while the other player aims at the opposite. In this framework, we show that FRGs are determined in the sense that for every state, both of the two players have the same value, and there exist optimal memoryless strategies for both players. Moreover, we design algorithms, which achieve polynomial time complexity in the size of the FRG, to compute the values of all states and the optimal memoryless strategies for the players. For a special class of FRGs, we provide an improved algorithm that achieves linear-logarithmic running time to compute the values of states. In addition, several examples are given to illustrate our motivation and the theoretical development.

Abstract: We study the reachability problem of a quantum system modelled by a quantum automaton. The reachable sets are chosen to be boolean combinations of (closed) subspaces of the state space of the quantum system. Four different reachability properties are considered: eventually reachable, globally reachable, ultimately forever reachable, and infinitely often reachable. The main result of this paper is that all of the four reachability properties are undecidable in general; however, the last three become decidable if the reachable sets are boolean combinations without negation.

Abstract:This paper proposes methods for reachability analysis of nonlinear systems in both open loop and closed loop with advanced controllers. The methods combine hybrid zonotopes, a construct called a state-update set, functional decomposition, and special ordered set approximations to enable linear growth in reachable set memory complexity with time and linear scaling in computational complexity with the system dimension. Facilitating this combination are new identities for constructing nonconvex sets that contain nonlinear functions and for efficiently converting a collection of polytopes from vertex representation to hybrid zonotope representation. Benchmark numerical examples from the literature demonstrate the proposed methods and provide comparison to state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract:Petri nets is a fundamental model in the area of formal verification.It is popular in both theoretical study and application.For the analysis of algorithmic properties of Petri nets,they are often equivalently viewed as vector addition systems.This survey gives a comprehensive review of the recent achievements in this area.First,formal definitions of the vector addition systems and their key verification problems are provided with emphasis on the discussion about reachability problem,including the latest results and the main proof techniques.Then the development on the case where the dimension is a constant number rather than a variable is summarized along with some key theorems which are fundamental to the current complexity results.Furthermore,as some important variants of vector addition systems have been proposed in recent years,a brief introduction is given to the motivation and definitions of some of the most representative ones,and the latest results on verification relating to these models.In addition,possible future work are highlighted at the end of each section.
