Abstract:The evolution of coordinated behavior in early animals is largely obscure. Ruperti et al. uncover that sponge movement is driven by actomyosin stress fiber relaxation, regulated by Akt/NO/PKG/PKA. Agitation-induced movement involves an ancient "relaxant-inflammatory" response, which also occurs in the vertebrate vascular system.
