Abstract:Adjoint-based mesh adaptive methods are capable of distributing computational resources to areas which are important for predicting an engineering output. In this paper, we develop an adjoint-based h-adaptation approach based on the high-order correction procedure via reconstruction formulation (CPR) to minimize the output or functional error. A dual-consistent CPR formulation of hyperbolic conservation laws is developed and its dual consistency is analyzed. Super-convergent functional and error estimate for the output with the CPR method are obtained. Factors affecting the dual consistency, such as the solution point distribution, correction functions, boundary conditions and the discretization approach for the non-linear flux divergence term, are studied. The presented method is then used to perform simulations for the 2D Euler and Navier–Stokes equations with mesh adaptation driven by the adjoint-based error estimate. Several numerical examples demonstrate the ability of the presented method to dramatically reduce the computational cost comparing with uniform grid refinement.
Adaptive Remeshing for Modified Solid Model Through Mesh Re-use

Abstract:Using virtual prototyping to improve product design nowadays widely adopted by industries to shorten product design cycle. The integration of CAD and CAE is thus required to have a rapid interaction between engineers. Among the difficulties in integration, efficient remeshing after solid model modification is one key problem because remeshing is usually a very time consuming work. In this paper, a remeshing method through mesh re-use is presented. Mesh elements around modified geometry entities are destructed, new elements are built to replace the removed elements. In the above process, the destruction zone is determined using mesh size function to ensure adaptive meshing. Finally, the mesh model is locally rebuilt for the modified model with desired geometry adaptivity.
Mathematical Mesh Adaptation of Numerical Manifold Element Method

Abstract:A-posteriori error estimation theory and a practical and effective h-type adaptive procedure for numerical manifold element method are presented.The relative error factors of manifold element and discrete system are defined in energy norm.To estimate the relative error factors,the exact stresses are approximately determined through stresses on Gaussian points basing on the numerical manifold method and finite cover technology.All manifold elements with relative error factor determined to exceed a pre-assigned limit are automatically refined until the relative error factor of discrete system satisfies a prescribed demand.The corresponding program is coded and two examples,one is an L-shaped structure and the other is a soil slope,are analyzed.The results indicate that the procedure can give nearly optical mesh and is practical and effective for both regular problems and problems with strong singularities.

Abstract:Adjoint-based adaptive methods have the capability of dynamically distributing computing power to areas which are important for predicting an engineering output such as lift or drag. In this paper, we apply an anisotropic h-adaptation method for simplex meshes using the correction procedure via reconstruction(CPR) method with the target of minimizing the output error. An adjoint-based error estimation with a local refinement sampling process is utilized to drive the anisotropic mesh refinement without making any assumption about the solution features. The accuracy and efficiency of the isotropic and anisotropic adaptation strategies are compared on several 2D inviscid flow problems.

Abstract:In electromagnetic modeling, a proper computational mesh is important in analysis. In this paper, we develop a duality-based method for error estimation and mesh adaptation. Such method pays attention to the influence of error generation, propagation, and accumulation to a goal-oriented function, rather than numerical error itself. A numerical example of a 90 GHz stepped impedance resonator (SIR) filter is given, proving its capability in S-parameter-oriented computation.

Abstract:Based on the principle of discrete element method for plane elasticity problem,a posteriori error estimator which depending on the displacement of seam and a mesh adaptive strategy for discrete element method were presented.Compared with finite element method,the mesh adaptation for discrete element method has some advantages,such as the principle is simple,the adaptive mesh has no irregular node or distorted element.The numerical results of two examples showed that the proposed mesh adaptive strategy can give proper adaptive meshes to describe the characters of stress centralization and boundary condition.The results agreed well with that obtained by adaptive finite element method.

Abstract:In present paper, mesh adaptation is applied for curing the pathological behaviors of the enhanced time-accurate upwind scheme (Loh & Jorgenson, AIAAJ 2016). In the original ETAU (enhanced time-accurate upwind) scheme, a multidimensional dissipation model is required to cure the pathological behaviors. The multi-dimensional dissipation model will increase the global dissipation level reducing numerical resolution. In present work, the metric-based mesh adaptation strategy provides an alternative way to cure the pathological behaviors of the shock capturing. The Hessian matrix of flow variables is applied to construct the metric, which represents the curvature of the physical solution. The adapting operation can well refine the anisotropic meshes at the location with large gradients. The numerical results show that the adaptation of mesh provides a possible way to cure the pathological behaviors of upwind schemes.

Abstract:To satisfy the requirement of finite element analysis,a geometry adaptive mesh generation approach is proposed for parametric surface.Based on constrained Delaunay triangulation under Riemannian metric context,the new approach could capture the proximity between vertices and curves from surface boundary.Together with curvature and other traditional size control strategies,the proximity is used to control the discretization of surface boundary and construct the mesh size field.An advancing front technique based on mapping transformation is then adopted to discretize the surface.Experiments on complex industrial models show that this approach is efficient to generate high-quality adaptive surface mesh based on geometric features.

The continuous and discrete adjoint formulations for the CPR method are developed and the analysis of its dual consistent discretization is performed. Current method is applied to output-based adaptive simulations for 2D Euler equations. Several well-known inviscid ow cases are utilized to compare the e ectiveness of the adjoint-based and the residual-based adaptation strategies.

Abstract:Mesh adaptation is widely used in numerical simulations to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the solutions. This paper introduces a physics-based hexahedral mesh adaptation method based on posterior-error estimation. First, we determine the regions to be refined based on the Riemannian metric field, which is calculated according to the analysis result on the coarse hex mesh. Second, the quad sets to be inserted by sheet inflation operations are determined based on the graph cuts algorithm, which considers the topological quality and the adaptation requirements. Finally, the mesh quality is improved with a size-preserving mesh optimization method that considers both the element shape and mesh size. Experimental results for the mechanical parts verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The multipoint constraint method,which is currently applied to deal with the hanging node introduced by the h-refinement in standard finite element method,requires more degrees of freedom(DOFs) and degrades the numerical stability,therefore,a convenient method to treat the hanging node was presented in the framework of the enhanced finite element method(FEM++).According to separated mathematical and physical meshes,a new correlation rule for FEM++,namely reconstruction of physical displacement mode,was proposed to handle the hanging node with any irregularity index in a uniform way,and the corresponding finite element formulas were then derived.The superconvergent patch recovery and ZZ(Zienkiwicz-Zhu) error estimate method were improved,and the a posteriori error estimate method and corresponding h-refinement strategy suitable for FEM++ were then put forward.The DOFs of the hanging node can be represented by the independent DOFs of the mathematical nodes using reconstruction of physical displacement mode,so no extra DOF is needed,and the displacement continuity between the elements and the numerical stability can both be guaranteed.Numerical examples demonstrate that,meshes that satisfying an aim error can be obtained by the a posteriori error estimate method and the h-refinement strategy proposed here.
AN EFFICIENT H-ADAPTIVE SCALED BOUNDARY ELEMENT METHOD FOR TRANSIENT ELASTODYNAMICS

Abstract:This study develops a posterior h-hierarchical adaptive scaled boundary finite ele- ment method for transient elastodynamic problems using a mesh refinement procedure which subdivides subdomains. In a time step, the fields of displacement, stress, velocity and accele- ration are all semi-analytical and the kinetic energy, strain energy and energy errors are all semi-analytically integrated in subdomains. This makes mesh mapping very simple but accu- rate. Mesh refinement is very simple, flexible and efficient because only a small number of subdomains are subdivided due to the high accuracy of the SBFEM. The results of an example with stress wave propagation were presented. It is shown that the developed method is capa- ble of capturing the propagation of steep stress regions and calculating accurate dynamic responses, but only using a fraction of degrees of freedom required by adaptive finite element methods.
Adaptive RANS Solution with the High-order Correction Procedure Via Reconstruction Method

Abstract:In this paper, we present an adjoint-based mesh adaptation method for the Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes (RANS) Equations to minimize the output error. A dual-consistent high-order correction procedure via reconstruction method (CPR) is utilized to discretize the RANS equations with the modified Spalart-Allmaras (SA) model. The wall distance of each solution point in the computing domain is computed by solving the Eikonal equation using the CPR framework. The mesh refinements are driven by the automated outputbased adaptation. The adaptive results of the turbulence flow over a flat plate problem and the turbulence flow over the NACA0012 airfoil problem demonstrate the ability of the present method to efficiently reduce the functional errors in terms of the number of degrees of freedom (DOFs).
Improvement of boundary aberration and computation efficiency in meshless method

Abstract:Two usual methods for constructing the shape functions of meshless methods, smooth particles hydrodynamics (SPH) and moving least square (MLS), were analyzed and compared. The reason of boundary aberration in SPH was indicated, and the virtual points method which assigned extra points outside the boundary was presented to control the boundary aberration. Allocation method and element-free Galerkin method were used to resolve the one-dimensional and two-dimensional differential equations. Computation results showed that Lagrange multiplier method has better accuracy than point interpolation method in dealing with boundary conditions. Cantilever beam example illustrated the influence of support radius and Gauss integral point on accuracy and cost. The result indicates that single Gauss integral point is affected by the variation of support radius, however higher order Gauss integral points reduce the sensitivity to the variation of support radius and improve the computational accuracy, while the computation cost increases.

Abstract:PurposeAn improved adaptive finite element analysis based on local error estimate is proposed via the element energy projection (EEP) technique. This paper aims to discuss the aforementioned idea.Design/methodology/approachThe computational region for a posteriori error estimation based on EEP method is further confined to a critical set of local elements generated in the previous adaptive step, enhancing efficiency while maintaining accuracy. The adaptive procedure incorporated with hierarchical mesh refinement is then developed.FindingsThe effectiveness of the improved error estimation of the overall adaptive analysis is confirmed by several benchmark examples. The results show that the shrinkage of the local computational region has little negative influence on the accuracy of a posteriori error estimation, thus yielding an improved adaptive procedure with simplified logic and reduced cost.Originality/valueBy localizing the computational region for error estimation, two crucial but cumbersome tricks, i.e. treatments of virtual elements and hanging nodes, are removed, giving the proposed approach full clarity and flexibility. The improved adaptive procedure characterizes simpler and faster computational algorithm and can produce results with required accuracy measured in maximum norm.

Abstract:A novel, on-machine method applying the adaptive triangular mesh sampling measuring process on automotive parts mold was elaborated in order to obtain the processing errors of free-form surfaces. This process has firstly generated a triangular mesh through the advancing front method. This has allowed us to extract the coordinate data corresponding to the mesh nodes. Subsequently, the processed surfaces were fitted by the mean of NURBS surface reconstruction. The final stage has employed the determination of the normal distance between the reconstructed and theoretical surfaces using the generalized Newtonian method, which has eventually allowed us to obtain the free-form surface machining errors as well as the model surface profile errors corresponding to the experimental process. Therefore, we have effectively determined the free-form surface processing errors by using the processing surface reconstruction methodology based on the adaptive triangular mesh sampling.

Abstract:Solutions of many practical problems involve several components which have different natures and/or different locations of singularity. As a result, a single mesh may not be able to achieve satisfactory adaptation result. In this paper, a new adaptive mesh implementation strategy using multiple meshes is developed, which is especially useful for problems whose solution components exhibit different singularity behaviors. We describe the basic ideas and ingredients of the multi-mesh adaptive methods. Numerical results for solving partial differential equations and optimal control problems are presented to demonstrate the advantages of the multi-mesh approach

Abstract:We present a novel method to construct compatible surface meshes with bounded approximation errors. Given two oriented and topologically equivalent surfaces and a sparse set of corresponding landmarks, our method contains two steps: (1) generate compatible meshes with bounded approximation errors and (2) reduce mesh complexity while ensuring that approximation errors are always bounded. Central to the first step is a parameterization-based remeshing technique, which is capable of isotropically remeshing the input surfaces to be compatible and error-bounded. By iteratively performing a novel edge-based compatible remeshing and increasing the compatible target edge lengths, the second step effectively reduces mesh complexity while explicitly maintaining compatibility, regularity, and bounding approximation errors. Tests on various pairs of complex models demonstrate the efficacy and practicability of our method for constructing high-quality compatible meshes with bounded approximation errors.

Abstract:In this article, we propose an adaptive mesh-refining based on the multi-level algorithm and derive a unified a posteriori error estimate for a class of nonlinear problems. We have shown that the multi-level algorithm on adaptive meshes retains quadratic convergence of Newton's method across different mesh levels, which is numerically validated. Our framework facilitates to use the general theory established for a linear problem associated with given nonlinear equations. In particular, existing a posteriori error estimates for the linear problem can be utilized to find reliable error estimators for the given nonlinear problem. As applications of our theory, we consider the pseudostress-velocity formulation of Navier–Stokes equations and the standard Galerkin formulation of semilinear elliptic equations. Reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimators for both approximations are derived. Finally, several numerical examples are presented to test the performance of the algorithm and validity of the theory developed.

Abstract:Generating high-order tetrahedral meshes.Satisfying the error-bounded and distortion-bounded conditions.With as few tetrahedrons as possible.We present a robust method to generate high-quality high-order tetrahedral meshes with bounded approximation errors and low mesh complexity. The success of our method relies on two key components. The first one is three novel local operations that robustly modify the topology of the high-order tetrahedral mesh while avoiding invalid (flipped or degenerate) elements. In practice, our meshing algorithm follows the edge-based remeshing algorithm that iteratively conducts these local topological operations and a geometric optimization operation to improve mesh quality. The second is a new containment check procedure that robustly judges whether the approximation error between the input mesh and the high-order mesh exceeds the user-specified bound. If one operation causes the error-bounded constraint to be violated, we reject this operation to ensure a bounded approximation error. Besides, the number of tetrahedrons of the high-order mesh is reduced by progressively increasing the target edge length in the edge-based remeshing algorithm. A large number of experimental results have shown the capability and feasibility of our method.
