Abstract:The multichannel synthetic aperture radar ground moving target indication (SAR/GMTI) technique is a simplified implementation of space-time adaptive processing (STAP), which has been proved to be feasible in the past decades. However, its detection performance will be degraded in heterogeneous environments due to the rapidly varying clutter characteristics. Knowledge-aided (KA) STAP provides an effective way to deal with the nonstationary problem in real-world clutter environment. Based on the KA STAP methods, this paper proposes a KA algorithm for adaptive SAR/GMTI processing in heterogeneous environments. It reduces sample support by its fast convergence properties and shows robust to non-stationary clutter distribution relative to the traditional adaptive SAR/GMTI scheme. Experimental clutter suppression results are employed to verify the virtue of this algorithm.

Abstract:Airborne SAR operating in the VHF/UHF band has shown promising results for wide-area surveillance of ground moving targets. Both targets in the open as well as concealed by foliage may be detected in a robust manner by changing detection with single channel. This manner has lower cost but only limited indication. To improve its performance, we discuss the characteristics of moving target in the azimuth sub-look image. These characteristics include phase and amplitude of moving target, which corresponds to the azimuth shift motion and energy variation in respectively. The simulation and real results show that the change detection of GMTI can be improved by utilizing these characteristics.

Abstract:As a new observation mode, wide-angle staring synthetic aperture radar ground moving target indication (WasSAR-GMTI), which can observe the fixed area for a long time and achieve moving target tracking, has attracted a lot of interest. However, with increasingly complex flight trajectories and application scenarios, the performance of traditional method tends to degrade. In this article, a novel approach based on post-Doppler space-time adaptive processing (PD-STAP) and imaging method is proposed. First, selecting and extending training data from repeat-pass data can obtain accuracy estimated clutter covariance matrix (CCM). Moreover, the relationship between extended quantity of training data and clutter suppression performance is further analyzed in this article, and then, the joint-pixel PD-STAP (JP PD-STAP), which utilizing auxiliary units under test cell along range direction, is performed to overcome the effect of residual range curvature after keystone transform (KT). Finally, after clutter suppression, the parameters and imaging method based on WasSAR system are proposed. The multidimensional parameter is simplified as 1-D line search problem, which has high efficiency. Considering the curvilinear trajectory, the back-projection (BP) is adopted to process. Inserting parameters into BP can be seen as coarse motion compensation (MOCO), and the further spectrum compression (SC) method and phase gradient autofocus (PGA) is performed to obtain refocus and relocate imaging of moving target. The real-measured WasSAR data processing results demonstrated the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Multichannel synthetic aperture radar ground moving target indication has been widely used and get great attention nowadays. Traditional adaptive methods like space-time adaptive processing (STAP) need to calculate and search the maximum of the test statistic pixel by pixel over a large range of radial velocity, which will cause great computational burden. Nonadaptive methods like displaced phase center antenna (DPCA) will cause signal loss of moving targets, thereby degrading the performance of moving targets detection and radial velocity estimation. To improve the problem mentioned above, this article proposes a novel two-step scheme based on greatest of (GO)-DPCA and Local STAP. In step I, GO-DPCA utilizes the complex images of the channels with different baselines for joint moving target detection. Then, in step II, only the local data of moving targets detected in step I needs to be extracted from the original image domain for clutter suppression and radial velocity estimation simultaneously by STAP. Since the processing gain of moving targets depends on the radial velocity and baseline length, the detection performance of moving targets with different radial velocity can be improved by proposed GO-DPCA compared to conventional DPCA. Considering the moving targets usually distribute sparsely in the scene, step II can avoid most computational burden caused by processing pixel by pixel. Finally, the experimental results of both simulated and acquired data are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:<p>This paper investigates a novel ground moving target indication (GMTI) scheme for a hypersonic vehicle-borne multichannel synthetic aperture radar (MC-SAR) system with Doppler ambiguity. First, after the range compression and azimuth chirp Fourier transform (CFT), by applying the eigenspace-based adaptive sum and difference beams (EASDB) on the coarse-focused images, the high-precision cross-track velocity (CTV) can be retrieved. Then, utilizing the high-precision CTV to construct an accurate moving target steering vector to extract the moving target energy. With the proposed CFT-two-step method, we have avoided cumbersome CTV search, and simplified the process of range walk correction, resulting in lower computational complexity. Compared to the CFT-center and CFT-two-step methods, the proposed scheme obtains the accurate two-dimension motion parameters of a moving target, and has better performance and robustness in the detection, focusing, and location, preserving the moving target envelope and achieving higher signal-to-clutter-and-noise ratio (SCNR). Finally, using the processing results of simulation and real measured MC-SAR data, we verify the effectiveness and feasibility of our proposed scheme.</p>

Abstract:In high-resolution and wide-swath synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, there are azimuth Doppler ambiguity and ghost ground moving targets (GMTs). Incorporated with an improved equivalent range model (IERM), this article explores a simultaneous scene imaging and GMT indication (GMTI) scheme with multiple beamforming for hypersonic vehicle-borne dive-trajectory high-squint multichannel SAR (HSV-DTHS-MC-SAR). First, the coarse-focusing imageries are recovered. Then, the CTV estimation with the dynamic-eigenspace-based adaptive sum and difference beams (EASDBs) is explored. After that, the SAR scene processing which enjoys "customized" beamforming, minimizes the ghost GMT and reconstructs the ambiguity-free scene image. Moreover, the proposed clutter suppression method generates the beamformer center in the desired GMT direction and reduces the beamformer sidelobe by using quadratic pattern constraints. Finally, the geometry and inverse projections are performed to calibrate the distortion arising from vertical velocity. Compared to the existing methods, the proposed scheme has innovations or improvements in CTV estimation, scene recovery, and cutter suppression. To be specific, it avoids the cumbersome CTV search and thus has lower computation, enjoys more concise and robust removal of ghost GMT in the scene, and frees the steering vector mismatch plus achieves a higher signal-to-clutter-and-noise ratio (SCNR). The extensive simulations confirm the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

Abstract:To detect and estimate ground slowly moving targets in airborne single-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR), a road-aided ground moving target indication (GMTI) algorithm is proposed in this paper. First, the road area is extracted from a focused SAR image based on radar vision. Second, after stationary clutter suppression in the range-Doppler domain, a moving target is detected and located in the image domain via the watershed method. The target's position on the road as well as its radial velocity can be determined according to the target's offset distance and traffic rules. Furthermore, the target's azimuth velocity is estimated based on the road slope obtained via polynomial fitting. Compared with the traditional algorithms, the proposed method can effectively cope with slowly moving targets partly submerged in a stationary clutter spectrum. In addition, the proposed method can be easily extended to a multi-channel system to further improve the performance of clutter suppression and motion estimation. Finally, the results of numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:The multi-input multi-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO-SAR) is an innovative concept, which can bring high degrees of freedom for SAR system with limited transmitting/receiving (T/R) elements. In this paper, ground moving target indication (GMTI) for MIMO-SAR is studied based on reasonable usage of the space-time equivalent samplings. Furthermore, this paper gives a deep insight of the azimuth "spurious peaks" effect, caused by the periodically modulated error signal due to the radial velocity of moving target. Also, the compensation method is given to suppress the unwanted "spurious peaks". Finally, the numerical experiments are also provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the MIMO-SAR GMTI. ©2009 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper proposes two modified space time adaptive processing (STAP) methods based on piecewise sub-apertures and data constraints for non-stationary interference cancellation in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) applications. In these methods, the entire synthetic aperture time is divided into several sub-apertures so that the interference can be considered as stationary in each sub-aperture. At the same time, the consistency of the echo phase in the slow time domain is preserved by the data constraint to ensure the null depth of the antenna pattern for non-stationary interference cancellation and the performance of azimuth focusing in SAR. The proposed algorithms are validated through the model simulation and measured data.

Abstract:Traditional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ground moving target detection (GMTD) technology mostly relies on multichannel data, which requires higher complexity of the radar system. This letter proposes a subband interferometry (SBI)-based algorithm for single-channel SAR GMTD. First, the echo signal is divided into high and low bands containing overlapping parts before the imaging process, then the subbands are imaged separately, and the SBI algorithm is used to achieve the interferometric phase of the subbands. It can be observed that the moving target has the characteristics of phase reversal in the interferometric phase image, and graphics operations such as median filtering or morphological processing can be used to detect the moving target. In this letter, the relationship between the subbands coincidence, the correlation coefficient (CC) of SBI, and the phase of moving target after SBI processing are derived. The real airborne SAR data verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:Ground moving target detection is one of the foremost tasks for multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system. The traditional robust principal component analysis (RPCA) method is capable of separating low-rank and sparse components from mixed echo signals, and it has been widely applied in SAR ground moving target indication (GMTI). However, it suffers from sensitivity to channel mismatch, high computational complexity, and excessively high false alarm rates. To address these issues, a novel method that combines adaptive multichannel data reconstruction (DR) with improved pseudo-skeleton decomposition (IPSD) is proposed. First, the iterative weighted approach is presented to precisely reconstruct the multichannel data vector with the joint-pixel model. After that, IPSD is presented to achieve the moving target detection, in which the row and column index sets are selected using the generalized inner product (GIP) and the amplitude histogram distribution criterion. Compared to the existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm effectively addresses the challenge of improving local region coherence in multichannel image sequences. In addition, compared to previous RPCA methods, the proposed algorithm significantly reduces false alarm rates in strong clutter backgrounds while achieving higher efficiency. Simulation results and real SAR data experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel method is proposed to estimate the along-track baseline for a multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, intended for ground moving target indication (GMTI) applications. First, an adaptive spectrum filtering technique is proposed to compensate the terrain interferometric phase caused by the cross-track baseline and then the ground clutter is rejected by applying the joint-pixel displaced phase center antenna (JPDPCA). After performing the moving target detection, the target radial velocity is estimated according to the azimuth position offset by exploiting the road-aided information. Finally, the along-track baseline is derived based on the subspace projection (SP). The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by data from the experimental airborne system.

Abstract:Due to a long coherent processing interval, moving targets are severely smeared in the UHF-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. This further results in a low signal-to-clutter-and-noise ratio, which might lead to an unacceptable false-alarm rate in multichannel ground moving target indication. A method of moving target screening is presented in this letter, which serves to determine whether the target detected by a constant false-alarm rate detector is a real moving target. An inverse omega-K algorithm is implemented, which can recover the Doppler phase history of any isolated target within a clutter-suppressed omega-K SAR image. The recovered data are again processed into a subimage by a simple range-Doppler algorithm. Then, the subimage is refocused by azimuth autofocus processing. The sharpness of the subimage will not change after refocusing if it only contains stationary targets; otherwise, the sharpness will significantly improve. We can eliminate a false moving target by detecting this change. The proposed method is demonstrated on simulated and real multichannel UHF-band SAR data.

Abstract:The inherent magnitude and phase errors between channels in the multichannel synthetic aperture radar/ground moving target indication (SAR/GMTI) system will affect the clutter suppression and moving target detection performance of the system. To solve this problem, this letter proposes an adaptive channel balancing algorithm based on the 2-D Gaussian kernel function. First, the iterative reweighted least squares (IRLS) algorithm is used to estimate and compensate the inherent linear phase error that varies with the Doppler frequency in the range-Doppler domain. Then the Gaussian statistical analysis of the residual phase errors is performed in the image domain after the azimuth processing. According to the coupling characteristics of the range and azimuth of the SAR image, the correlation coefficient and the standard deviations of the phase errors in the range and azimuth directions are computed, and a 2-D Gaussian kernel function is constructed to estimate and compensate the residual phase errors. Finally, a mean filter is used to compensate the 2-D magnitude errors. This algorithm can eliminate the magnitude and phase errors and improve the coherence between different channels. The real airborne SAR data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Ground moving target indication (GMTI), as a challenging task for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, keeps drawing considerable attention. Robust principal component analysis (RPCA) aiming at separating low-rank and sparse components has been successfully employed in SAR systems for GMTI recently. However, its practical application is limited by the heavy computational burden as well as the requirement of manual parameter modification. To cope with this problem, a fast and free of presetting parameters RPCA network (RPCA-Net) is proposed for SAR-GMTI under strong clutter background. In the proposed method, a novel RPCA model is first introduced, where not only the low-rank and sparse terms but also the errors in practical SAR systems are taken into account. Moreover, the low-rank factorization plus scaled gradient descent (ScaledGD) is also employed to acquire low-rank clutter background rather than singular value decomposition (SVD). Then, we parameterize our proposed RPCA model and unfold it as a feedforward neural network (FNN) to acquire the iterative parameters through backpropagation. Compared to the GMTI methods based on traditional RPCA models, our proposed RPCA-Net can provide a higher detection ability and faster convergence without presetting parameters empirically. Experiments on two groups of measured data collected by airborne SAR systems validate the superior performance of the proposed RPCA-Net.

Abstract:The spaceborne high-resolution and wide-swath synthetic aperture radar (HRWS-SAR) system combined with the ground moving target indication (GMTI) mode provides a promising prospect in the realization of wide-area target surveying and high-resolution target imaging. In this paper, a system design method is proposed for an HRWS-SAR-GMTI system with ideal reconstruction configuration. In the proposed method, the whole azimuth receiving channels are uniformly divided into multiple groups, where HRWS-SAR imaging is implemented in each sub-group and then GMTI processing is performed based on the reconstructed SAR images. Then, an optimal candidate PRF is properly selected with respect to the optimal reconstruction configuration. After that, the digital beam forming scanning on receive (DBF-SCORE) technique is applied to further enlarge the range swath and improve the noise equivalent scattering coefficient (NESZ). Based on the predesigned system, HRWS-SAR image-based GMTI processing can finally be accomplished. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by simulated experiments.

Abstract:While there are recent researches on hypersonic vehicle-borne multichannel synthetic aperture radar in ground moving target indication (HSV-MC-SAR/GMTI), this article, which specifically explores a robust GMTI scheme for the highly squinted HSV-MC-SAR in dive mode, is novel. First, an improved equivalent range model (IERM) for stationary targets and GMTs is explored, which enjoys a concise expression and therefore offers the potential to simplify the GMTI process. Then, based on the proposed model, a robust GMTI scheme is derived in detail, paying particular attention to Doppler ambiguity arising from the high-speed and high-resolution wide-swath. Furthermore, it retrieves the accurate two-dimensional speeds of GMTs and realizes the satisfactory performance of clutter rejection and GMT imaging, generating the matched beamforming and enhancing the GMT energy. Finally, it applies the inverse projection to revise the geometry shift induced by the vertical speed. Simulation examples are used to verify the proposed GMTI scheme.

Abstract:To deal with the issue of multifunctional synchronized implementation for airborne SAR/GMTI processor,a hybrid SAR/ISAR processing based ground moving target imaging module design is proposed.The range compressed data are multiplexed for parallelization of static scene imaging,moving target detection and imaging.Combining with the architecture of the multi-processor digital signal processing board,homogenous function and buffering scheme are designed,which makes the DSP processor and its external memory constitute an independent imaging node.Besides,the link port based interconnection can transmit the range compressed sub-aperture data for synchronous buffering,thus,each node can concurrently execute the request for imaging the detected moving target of interest.Experimental results based on the measured real data validate the effectiveness of the proposed design.

Abstract:Detection and imaging of multiple moving targets is a challenging task, particularly with real synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. In this paper, moving targets with different motion parameters are classified based on the relative locations of their spectra to that of the clutter. Based on the classification, a novel moving target processing strategy with real SAR data is proposed, including a two-step ground moving target indication (GMTI) algorithm and a practical ground moving target imaging (GMTIm) algorithm with motion error compensation. The two-step GMTI algorithm has the ability of indicating multiple moving targets, particularly those submerged by the clutter; the practical GMTIm algorithm shows a robust performance in real data moving target imaging since the motion errors are estimated and compensated. Both simulated and real data processing results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

This article presents a new method of ground moving target detection and tracking which is based on sequence SAR images. Firstly, the moving target detection and velocity estimation can be realized using the method of multi-channel processing. Secondly, the location of moving target can be estimated accurately using a high accuracy target location method based on knowledge-aid. The method uses the matching and target tracking technique based on sequential SAR images to realize the tracking and track reconstruction of moving target. Next, the image reference locking technology is used to achieve accurate image registration for a series of sequential SAR images obtained. Finally, the moving target can be tracked. The results of measured data shows the validity of the presented method.
