Abstract:Risk relief services (RRSs), as complementary to online trust promoting services, are becoming versatile options for risk reduction in online consumer-to-consumer auctions. In this paper, we identify factors that affect the behavior of buyers in an online auction market who had to either adopt or not adopt online escrow services (OES). An experimental C2C auction system with embedded decision support features was used to collect data. Results show that market factors, such as fraud rate, product price, and seller's reputation are important in determining buyers' OES adoption. This study also finds that sellers' reputation has a significant effect on buyer's risk perception, which influences his OES adoption decision. Furthermore, the buyers' OES adoption decisions were found to be congruent with the implied recommendations that were based on expected utility calculations.

Abstract:Online escrow is an emerging trust service in consumer-to-consumer auction markets to protect online traders from Internet fraud. This paper reports an empirical study on the factors affecting traders’ risk perception and their adoption of online escrow service. A web-based C2C auction experimental system has been implemented to dynamically collect subjects’ risk behavior during experiments. The data from online trading are then jointly analyzed with the data from a preexperiment survey for trader risk attitude. Results show that trade partner’s reputation and market fraud rate have significant effects on trader’s risk perception, and online traders who are risk averse will most likely to adopt escrow service with regard to the perceived risk.

Abstract:Online auctions have undergone rapid development in recent years. New features of online auctions, together with new bidding strategies different from those used in offline auctions, make research in this area compelling. The existing research mainly focuses on the description of bidding strategies; only a handful of studies focus on the antecedents of bidding strategies. This research aims to fill this gap by constructing a contingency framework to investigate why bidders bid differently in online auctions, and use unique bidding strategies. Environmental factors, bidding tasks, bidders’ characteristics, and bidding motivations are included in the framework. We conducted in-depth interviews with professional, experienced bidders in China to reveal the specific reasons why bidders adopt different bidding strategies during online auctions. Finally, we discuss the implications for both global research and practice.

Abstract:Purpose As a type of electronic commerce, online C2C markets have experienced a rapid growth in both sales volume and user numbers. Buy‐it‐now (BIN) auction is a mechanism to facilitate online auctions, and is adopted by the major online C2C marketplaces. This study aims to investigate consumers' purchase and adoption of risk relief service in BIN auctions in the online C2C market from the perspective of perceived risk. Design/methodology/approach A research model is developed based on relevant theory. Data are collected from American and Chinese consumers through a web‐based experiment system that simulates the transaction process on online C2C markets. The proposed hypotheses are tested with logistic and multiple linear regressions. Findings The results show that buyer's purchase behavior and usage of risk relief service for a transaction in BIN auctions are determined by the perceived risk, which is influenced by the buyer's risk attitude, seller online reputation, and the product price and type. Practical implications This study provides an in‐depth understanding of consumers' behaviors on online C2C markets at transaction level, and makes implications for online marketplace operation and business strategy making. Originality/value The primary value of this paper lies in providing a better understanding of consumers' behaviors on online C2C market, and investigating the factors that influence the consumers' purchase and adoption of risk relief service in online BIN auctions from the perceived risk perspective.

Abstract:For more and more newly established B2C firms,it is vital whether trust services provided by third parties can influence consumers' trust and enhance their purchasing intention or not.This research employs an experimental study to test the effects of three typical trust services-security and privacy service,rating service and the escrow service-on consumers' purchase intentions,to reveal their impacts on consumers' initial trust and perceived risk.The result of study showed that three trust service mechanisms had significant effects on initial trust in the e-shop and no significant impacts on perceived risk.Furthermore,it was found that perceived risk plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between initial trust and purchase intentions.
Can Bidder’s Buying Patterns Affect the Price in Online Auctions for Heterogeneous Goods?

Abstract:Until recently, there have little reason for any one to pay much attention to what factors will affect the final transaction price in online auctions. While almost all of the existing papers on the determinants of price are based on homogeneous goods, this paper investigates the determinants of the price for heterogeneous goods contained in some categories which are sold at the eBay website from the viewpoint of sellerpsilas buying patterns. The empirical results suggest that some factors such as the second price, the number of bidders, and the presence of insurance had positive and significant impacts on the final price. The sellerpsilas reputation has a positive, but limited impact on a buyerpsilas willingness to pay for an auction item. In contrast, the closing time features such as closing on weekend or in the evening do not have significant impacts on the auction price.

Abstract:The industry of cross-border electronic commerce (CBEC) has experienced rapid development in recent years, however it has also faced severe challenges concerning the managerial risks taking place across national borders. The aims of the study are two folds: first examine the effects of applying different risk mitigation strategies on the market performance of international online vendors (IOVs) and utilities of consumers; second explore whether consumers’ choices among vendors from different nations based on psychic distance are affected by the risk mitigation strategies of platforms or by the actual frequency of vendors making default moves. A dynamic simulation has been conducted based on four combinations of platform strategies determined by two dimensions of ex ante intervention and ex post investigation. The results indicate that (i) once increasing the frequency of ex post investigation of risk events, customers will suffer less default losses, and both IOVs and customers will gain more utilities; (ii) the profits of ordinary vendors will increase marginally when reducing the frequency of ex ante intervention of high-risk orders, causing a lower degree of shopping concentration; (iii) when platforms adopt risk mitigation strategies of more frequent intervention or higher investigation intensity toward IOVs, the psychic distances of consumers towards IOVs from the same nation and from relatively closer nations become closer.

Abstract:Web-mediated consumer-to-consumer auctions are often regarded as risky due to the opportunistic behaviors in transaction. Online virtual community using feedback-based reputation service is an emerging trust building technology to reduce risk in online auction market. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of feedback profiles on buyer’s purchase behavior. Based on previous researches, a trust-based model is developed to study the relationships among online reputation, trust, risk perception and intention. The model considers both similarities and differences between online and traditional market, it is expected to be a more effective basis for investigation of online consumer behavior.

Abstract:The paper has conducted an empirical study on the risk relieving factors for Chinese shopping behavior and the utility of risk relievers in Internet shopping. The outcome shows that Chinese consumers have their own preferences in choosing risk-reduction strategy. According to the utility scores of 16 risk relievers, we find that Chinese consumers prefer increasing the certainty of purchase outcome to reducing the degree of loss. Such methods as cash on delivery payment, service guarantee, payment security, retailer's reputation and local retailers are considered more useful and helpful when Chinese consumers evaluate the usefulness of the risk-reduction strategies in Internet shopping.

Abstract:The model on the effect of third party trust mechanisms in C2C markets was proposed.These mechanisms included feedback systems,Escrow service,C2C intermediary and e-commerce laws and regulations.This paper used an online questionnaire survey and collected 215 valid samples.Data were analyzed with SPSS and PLS Graph to examine the reliability,validity and model hypotheses.Results show that Escrow service,C2C intermediary and feedback systems play significant roles in establishing consumers' trust in sellers.E-commerce laws and regulations are found to have no significant effect on trust.Moreover,trust significantly affects perceived risk and behavioral intention.

The results show that buyer's perceived risk for a transaction is influenced by the Net benefit,product price and type,seller's online reputation,and the buyer's risk attitude and defrauded experience. Abstract:Trust is vital for market development, but how can trust be enhanced in a marketplace?A common view is that more trusting may help to build trust, especially in less developed economies.In this paper, we argue that more trusting may lead to less trust.We set up a rational expectation model in which a marketplace uses buyer protection to promote buyer trusting.Our results show that buyer protection may reduce trust in equilibrium and even hinder market expansion because it triggers differential entry between honest and strategic sellers and may induce more cheating from strategic sellers.Using a large transaction-level data set from the early years of Eachnet.com(an eBay equivalent in China), we find evidence that is consistent with the model predictions.Stronger buyer protection leads to less favorable evaluation of seller behavior and is associated with slower market expansion.These findings suggest that a trust-promoting policy aiming at buyer trusting may not be effective if it is not accompanied by additional incentives to improve seller trustworthiness.

Abstract:In order to validate utility of risk-relievers in electronic buying situations in China,a large-sample empirical study has been conducted for book and cloth. The result shows that performance risk,psychological risk and physical risk are found to be significantly different across purchase categories,while the other four risks are not.In addition,payment security,website reputation,viewing the good on the screen,money-back guarantee,exchanging good are thought to be the most effective strategies to reduce perceived risk in online purchasing.

Abstract:We analyze how retail investors price the credit risk of online P"P consumer loans in a reverse auction framework where personal interaction is absent. The explained interest rate variance is considerably larger than in comparable studies using bank loan data. This is unexpected, given the difference in experience and the limited set of information provided to the investor. Factors representing economic status significantly influence lender evaluations of the borrower's credit risk. Previous studies on gender discrimination found mixed results. We show that this is likely due to simplified specifications and find surprising results: male borrowers are charged a higher interest rates, conditional on being married and having children. Overall, our results indicate that retail investors exhibit a strong degree of predictability in this weakly regulated market for online P2P consumer loans.

Abstract:Uncertainty has been widely recognized as a primary barrier in online C2C transaction processes. This research explores the effectiveness of strategies typically employed to reduce uncertainty in C2C electronic commerce based upon the uncertainty reduction theory and Kelley's attribution theory. We inspect the effects of the information from four information seeking strategies on online consumers' perception of uncertainty when initially transacting with an unknown seller in an online marketplace in China; we also integrate the two most prominent contextual factors, information consistency and seller reputation, to explore their direct effects, as well as their interactive effects with information from the four strategies on uncertainty. An online survey is used to collect data from the three most prestigious online store marketplaces in China. The results specify the exact effects of these factors on uncertainty in different contextual conditions. Finally, the theoretical and practical implications of this research are discussed.
