Abstract:A reverse top-k keyword-based location query returns the influence zone for the query object. Given a specified query object q, the influence zone of q varies for different keyword sets. Users may be interested in identifying the maximum influence zone of the query object. To this end, we study the problem called MaxiZone that finds the keyword set maximizing the influence zone of a specified query object. The MaxiZone problem has many real-life applications, e.g., a business owner would like to identify the maximum influence zone so as to attract as many customers as possible. To address the MaxiZone problem, we propose three algorithms, including a basic algorithm, an index-centric algorithm together with a series of optimizations and a sampling-based algorithm. Extensive empirical study using real-world datasets demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of proposed algorithms.

Abstract:A city contains a variety of different urban functions with referring to the purpose of land use to support the diverse needs of urban residents, such as residence, working and recreation. Exploring urban functional zones is a critical task, which provides valuable applications for business site selection, transportation management and urban planning. It is well known that location information and human mobility semantics both are significant factors for identifying urban functional zones, just considering one factor is not effective. However, most of existing techniques capture the transformation of functional zones and interpret the results based solely on location or mobility semantics, and lack the capacity to deal with the multifaceted features of urban data. To tackle these problems, in this paper, we propose an interactive visual analytics system for effectively exploring urban functional zones based on spatio-temporal OD data and Points of Interest data. We first adaptively partition the territory into region units based on adaptive blue noise sampling method, extract POI feature matrix (location information) as a prior knowledge, model multidimensional spatio-temporal OD data as a tensor for addressing multifaceted features and propose an augment tensor-based algorithm that enables users to simultaneously combine mobility semantics and inherent location information for identifying functional zones. In addition, we design a set of visual encodings to better understand and interpret the results in a visual and intuitive manner. This system has been demonstrated using two case studies with a real-world dataset of HangZhou city and domain-expert interviews.

Abstract:The problem of influence maximization has attracted a lot of attention as it provides a way to improve marketing, branding, and product adoption. However, existing studies rarely consider the physical locations of the social users, although location is an important factor in targeted marketing. In this paper, we investigate the problem of influence spanning maximization in location-aware social networks. Our target is to identify the maximum spanning geographical regions in a query region, which is very different from the existing methods that focus on the quantity of the activated users in the query region. Since the problem is NP-hard, we develop one greedy algorithm with a 1-1/e approximation ratio and further improve its efficiency by developing an upper bound based approach. Then, we propose the OIR index by combining ordered influential node lists and an R*-tree and design the index based solution. The efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed solutions and index have been verified using three real datasets.

Abstract:Geo-textual data are ubiquitous these days. Recent study on spatial keyword search focused on the processing of queries which retrieve objects that match certain keywords within a spatial region. To ensure effective data retrieval, various extensions were done including the tolerance of errors in keyword matching and the search-as-you-type feature using prefix matching. We present MESA, a map application to support different variants of spatial keyword query. In this demonstration, we adopt the autocompletion paradigm that generates the initial query as a prefix matching query. If there are few matching results, other variants are performed as a form of relaxation that reuses the processing done in earlier phases. The types of relaxation allowed include spatial region expansion and exact/approximate prefix/substring matching. MESA adopts the client-server architecture. It provides fuzzy type-ahead search over geotextual data. The core of MESA is to adopt a unifying search strategy, which incrementally applies the relaxation in an appropriate order to maximize the efficiency of query processing. In addition, MESA equips a user-friendly interface to interact with users and visualize results. MESA also provides customized search to meet the needs of different users.

Abstract:This study presents a new method for the synergistic use of multi-scale image object metrics for land-use/land-cover mapping using an object-based classification approach. This new method can integrate an object with its super-objects' metrics. The entire classification involves two object hierarchies: (1) a five-level object hierarchy to extract object metrics at five scales, and (2) a three-level object hierarchy for the classification process. A five-level object hierarchy was developed through multi-scale segmentation to calculate and extract both spectral and textural metrics. Layers representing the hierarchy at each of the five scales were then intersected by using the overlay tool, an intersected layer was created with metrics from all five scales, and the same geometric elements were retained as those of the objects of the lowest level. A decision tree analysis was then used to build rules for the classification of the intersected layer, which subsequently served as the thematic layer in a three-level object hierarchy to identify shadow regions and produce the final map. The use of multi-scale object metrics yielded improved classification results compared with single-scale metrics, which indicates that multi-scale object metrics provide valuable spatial information. This method can fully utilize metrics at multiple scales and shows promise for use in object-based classification approaches.

Abstract:Geo-social networks offer opportunities for the marketing and promotion of geo-located services. In this setting, we explore a new problem, called Max imizing the Inf luence of B ichromatic R everse k N earest N eighbors (MaxInfBR k NN). The objective is to find a set of points of interest (POIs), which are geo-textually and socially relevant to social influencers who are expected to largely promote the POIs online. In other words, the problem aims to detect an optimal set of POIs with the largest word-of-mouth (WOM) marketing potential. This functionality is useful in various real-life applications, including social advertising, location-based viral marketing, and personalized POI recommendation. However, solving MaxInfBR k NN with theoretical guarantees is challenging because of the prohibitive overheads on BR k NN retrieval in geo-social networks, and the NP and #P-hardness of finding the optimal POI set. To achieve practical solutions, we present a framework with carefully designed indexes, efficient batch BR k NN processing algorithms, and alternative POI selection policies that support both approximate and heuristic solutions. Extensive experiments on real and synthetic datasets demonstrate the good performance of our proposed methods.

Abstract:The explosive growth of spatial data and the widespread use of spatial databases emphasize the need for spatial data mining. The subsets of features frequently located together in a geographic space are called spatial co-location patterns. It is difficult to discover co-location patterns because of the huge amount of data brought by the instances of spatial features. A large fraction of the computation time is devoted to generating row instances and candidate co-location patterns. This paper makes three main contributions for mining co-location patterns. First, the definition of maximal instances is given and a row instance (RI)-tree is constructed to find maximal instances from a spatial data set. Second, a fast method for generating all row instances and candidate co-locations is proposed and the feasibility of this method is proved. Third, a maximal instance algorithm with no join operations for mining co-location patterns is proposed. Finally, experimental evaluations using synthetic data sets and a real data set show that maximal instance algorithm is feasible and has better performance.

Abstract:We study the optimal-location queries in spatial databases. Given a set S of sites, a set O of objects, and a spatial region Q, the optimal-location query returns a location in Q such that, if a new site is put at that location, the total benefit to the objects is maximized. The optimal-location queries are of interest in many applications such as corporation decision-support systems. There may be many variations of the optimal location because different applications may define the optimality differently. In this thesis, we consider the geometric proximity between objects and sites and study two most intuitive definitions of the optimality, namely Max-Inf and Min-Dist. Max-Inf measures the total benefit as the number of objects closer to the new site than to any existing sites and aims to maximize it. Min-Dist measures the benefit as the savings of the distance from objects to their nearest sites and aims to minimize the average distance from each object to its nearest site. We also examine the problem under three different distance metrics, namely L1, L2 and network shortest path. We propose efficient solutions for each optimal location query (6 in total) and evaluate them experimentally. We expect that the work will not only advance spatial database research, but also benefit the end users who deal with a large volume of spatial data.

Abstract:Textual geographic information is indispensable and heavily relied upon in practical applications. The absence of clear distribution poses challenges in effectively harnessing geographic information, thereby driving our quest for exploration. We contend that geographic information is influenced by human behavior, cognition, expression, and thought processes, and given our intuitive understanding of natural systems, we hypothesize its conformity to the Gamma distribution. Through rigorous experiments on a diverse range of 24 datasets encompassing different languages and types, we have substantiated this hypothesis, unearthing the underlying regularities governing the dimensions of quantity, length, and distance in geographic information. Furthermore, theoretical analyses and comparisons with Gaussian distributions and Zipf's law have refuted the contingency of these laws. Significantly, we have estimated the upper bounds of human utilization of geographic information, pointing towards the existence of uncharted territories. Also, we provide guidance in geographic information extraction. Hope we peer its true countenance uncovering the veil of geographic information.

Abstract:Urban land use is constantly changing via human activities. These changes are recorded by imprint data. Traditionally, urban dynamics studies focus on two-dimensional spatiotemporal analysis. Based on our best knowledge, there is no study in the literature that uses imprint data for better understanding urban dynamics. In this research, we propose a spatial–temporal–semantic triple analytical framework to better understand urban dynamics by making full use of the imprint data, toponyms. The framework includes a text classification method and geographical analysis methods to understand urban dynamics in depth. Based on the inherent temporal and spatial information, we enrich semantic information with street names to explain urban dynamics in multiple dimensions. Taking Hangzhou city as an example, we used street names to reproduce the city changes over the past century. The results obtained through analysis of street names may accurately reflect the real development process of Hangzhou. This research demonstrates that imprint data left by urban development may play a pivotal role in better understanding urban dynamics.
Backbone Guided Extremal Optimization For The Hard Maximum Satisfiability Problem

Abstract:The original Extremal Optimization (EO) algorithm and its modified versions have been successfully applied to a variety of NP-hard optimization problems. However, there exists a problem that almost all existing EO-based algorithms have overlooked the inherent structural properties behind the optimization problems, e.g., the backbone information. This paper proposes a novel stochastic search method called "Backbone Guided Extremal Optimization (BGEO)" to solve the hard maximum satisfiability (MAX-SAT) problem, one of typical NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. The basic idea behind BGEO is to incorporate the backbone information into EO to guide the entire search process approaching the optimal solutions. The experimental results on many reported hard MAX-SAT instances have shown the superiority of BGEO to the reported EO-based algorithm without backbone information.

Abstract:This paper introduces and solves a novel type of spatial queries, namely, Optimal-Location-Selection (OLS) search, which has many applications in real life. Given a data object set D_A, a target object set D_B, a spatial region R, and a critical distance d_c in a multidimensional space, an OLS query retrieves those target objects in D_B that are outside R but have maximal optimality. Here, the optimality of a target object b \in D_B located outside R is defined as the number of the data objects from D_A that are inside R and meanwhile have their distances to b not exceeding d_c. When there is a tie, the accumulated distance from the data objects to b serves as the tie breaker, and the one with smaller distance has the better optimality. In this paper, we present the optimality metric, formalize the OLS query, and propose several algorithms for processing OLS queries efficiently. A comprehensive experimental evaluation has been conducted using both real and synthetic data sets to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the rapid growth of text data, and thus the increasing importance of in-depth analysis of text data for various applications. Text data are often organized in a database with documents labeled by attributes like time and location. Different documents manifest different topics. The topics of the documents may change along the attributes of the documents, and such changes have been the subject of research in the past. However, previous analyses techniques, such as topic detection and tracking, topic lifetime, and burstiness, all focus on the topic behavior of the documents in a given attribute range without contrasting to the documents in the overall range. This paper introduces the concept of u n i q u e t o p i c s, referring to those topics that only appear frequently within a small range of documents but not in the whole range. These unique topics may reflect some unique characteristics of documents in this small range not found outside of the range. The paper aims at an efficient pruning-based algorithm that, for a user-given set of keywords and a user-given attribute, finds the maximal ranges along the given attribute and their unique topics that are highly related to the given keyword set. Thorough experiments show that the algorithm is effective in various scenarios.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization, urban functional zones have become important for rational government and resource allocation. Points of interest (POIs), as informative and open-access data, have been widely used in studies of urban functions. However, most existing studies have failed to address unevenly or sparsely distributed POIs. In addition, the spatial adjacency of analysis units has been ignored. Therefore, we propose a new method for identifying urban functional zones based on POI density and marginalized graph autoencoder (MGAE). First, kernel density analysis was utilized to obtain the POI density and spread the effects of POIs to the surroundings, which enhanced the data from unevenly or sparsely distributed POIs considering the barrier effects of main roads and rivers. Second, MGAE performed feature extraction in view of the spatial adjacency to integrate features from the POIs of the surrounding units. Finally, the k-means algorithm was used to cluster units into zones, and semantic recognition was applied to identify the function category of each zone. A case study of Changzhou indicates that this method achieved an overall accuracy of 90.33% with a kappa coefficient of 0.88, which constitutes considerable improvement over that of conventional methods and can improve the performance of urban function identification.

Abstract:Many datasets nowadays contain links between geographic locations and natural language texts. These links can be geotags, such as geotagged tweets or geotagged Wikipedia pages, in which location coordinates are explicitly attached to texts. These links can also be place mentions, such as those in news articles, travel blogs, or historical archives, in which texts are implicitly connected to the mentioned places. This kind of data is referred to as geo-text data. The availability of large amounts of geo-text data brings both challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, it is challenging to automatically process this kind of data due to the unstructured texts and the complex spatial footprints of some places. On the other hand, geo-text data offers unique research opportunities through the rich information contained in texts and the special links between texts and geography. As a result, geo-text data facilitates various studies especially those in data-driven geospatial semantics. This paper discusses geo-text data and related concepts. With a focus on data-driven research, this paper systematically reviews a large number of studies that have discovered multiple types of knowledge from geo-text data. Based on the literature review, a generalized workflow is extracted and key challenges for future work are discussed.

Abstract:Spatial development involves multi-dimensional and multi-regional objectives that might be competing, while few studies have examined these issues simultaneously. We proposed a comprehensive model to assess the green quality of urban spatial development (GQUSD), focusing on the synergy of multi-dimensional objectives and the balance of multi-regional interests. The metropolitan city of Hangzhou was taken as an example. We included land consumption, vegetation loss and infrastructure cost as the inputs and the density of production and living activities as the outputs of spatial development. We developed a categorical Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) using geospatial big data and stratified optimization to evaluate the synergy of inputs-outputs at the finer level of spatial grids. Results: show a "sandwich" structure of the GQUSD in Hangzhou when considering green space and vegetation loss, and characterize four spatial typologies of agglomerated development, limited development, blinded development and low-potential development through the Bivariate Local Indicator of Spatial Association (LISA) analysis. The "sandwich" structure is shaped by spatial processes of socio-economic agglomeration, industrialdriven sprawl, new-town development and suburbanization of high-end sectors. We also find green inequality in the spatial development of Hangzhou where vegetation costs were higher in manufactural industrial sites and low-income communities. We provide urban planning strategies to balance competing interests across regions, objectives, functions and communities for green growth and sustainable goals.

Abstract:This documents put forward an advanced method to manage the rapid increasing spatial data. The core idea of the proposed method is the application of GeoSOT grid. In this geo-information management system, all the spatial data are marked by one or more codes for identification and the mentioned code is simply related to the geographical attributes regardless of the other characteristics. Further, we pay attention to the agricultural service applications and the dwelling service applications, and it turned out that our management method demonstrates the advantages of the traditional methods. Because of the high efficiency and convenience of this method, its application scenario is supposed to be quite broad in the future.

Abstract:A map becomes readable and translatable only after the use of labels. High-quality label placement (i.e., labelling) is a combinatorial optimization problem, where one or more objective functions are required. However, such objective functions are still not well achieved in existing methods with commonly used labelling rules (e.g., "avoidance of overlapping labels" and "placement at priority positions"). In this study, we define a new objective function using the maximum entropy principle and employ a modified genetic algorithm in the optimization process. Comparative experiments have been conducted with 29 existing labelling methods in a dataset of 1000 points. Experimental results show that the average percentage of non-overlapping labels by this new method reaches 94.73% (i.e., being ranked second in all 30 methods) and has no statistically significant difference from the best one (i.e., 94.87%). By further analysis, it is found that this new method not only can place more labels in priority positions than the method being ranked first but also has the potential to place labels for line and area features. Such results indicate that the maximum entropy principle may pave the way for further research in cartography.

Definition of Management Zones for Enhancing Cultivated Land Conservation Using Combined Spatial Data

Abstract:The loss of cultivated land has increasingly become an issue of regional and national concern in China. Definition of management zones is an important measure to protect limited cultivated land resource. In this study, combined spatial data were applied to define management zones in Fuyang city, China. The yield of cultivated land was first calculated and evaluated and the spatial distribution pattern mapped; the limiting factors affecting the yield were then explored; and their maps of the spatial variability were presented using geostatistics analysis. Data were jointly analyzed for management zone definition using a combination of principal component analysis with a fuzzy clustering method, two cluster validity functions were used to determine the optimal number of cluster. Finally one-way variance analysis was performed on 3,620 soil sampling points to assess how well the defined management zones reflected the soil properties and productivity level. It was shown that there existed great potential for increasing grain production, and the amount of cultivated land played a key role in maintaining security in grain production. Organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, elevation, thickness of the plow layer, and probability of irrigation guarantee were the main limiting factors affecting the yield. The optimal number of management zones was three, and there existed significantly statistical differences between the crop yield and field parameters in each defined management zone. Management zone I presented the highest potential crop yield, fertility level, and best agricultural production condition, whereas management zone III lowest. The study showed that the procedures used may be effective in automatically defining management zones; by the development of different management zones, different strategies of cultivated land management and practice in each zone could be determined, which is of great importance to enhance cultivated land conservation, stabilize agricultural production, promote sustainable use of cultivated land and guarantee food security.
