Abstract:3D human face model reconstruction is essential to the generation of facial animations that is widely used in the field of virtual reality (VR). The main issues of 3D facial model reconstruction based on images by vision technologies are in twofold: one is to select and match the corresponding features of face from two images with minimal interaction and the other is to generate the realistic-looking human face model. In this paper, a new algorithm for realistic-looking face reconstruction is presented based on stereo vision. Firstly, a pattern is printed and attached to a planar surface for camera calibration, and corners generation and corners matching between two images are performed by integrating modified image pyramid Lucas-Kanade (PLK) algorithm and local adjustment algorithm, and then 3D coordinates of corners are obtained by 3D reconstruction. Individual face model is generated by the deformation of general 3D model and interpolation of the features. Finally, realistic-looking human face model is obtained after texture mapping and eyes modeling. In addition, some application examples in the field of VR are given. Experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm is robust and the 3D model is photo-realistic.

In this paper, we introduce a method on structure from motion. First the accurate corner matches can be acquired by integrating modified image pyramid Lucas-Kanade algorithm and local adjustment algorithm, then a realistic-looking model is generated by camera calibration, motion analysis and texture mapping. Experimental results demonstrate the high accuracy of the corner matching algorithm and the vividness of the facial model.

Abstract:This paper presents a reconstruction algorithm for 3D realistic facial model based on facial images. In this algorithm, the camera is calibrated according to its field of view and manual labeled feature points. The dense corresponding points on the two facial images are matched using a semi _automatic method to carry out 3D reconstruction. Firstly, the initial face shape is gained by editing 2D corresponding mesh manually. Secondly, a robust maximum likelihood stereo matching algorithm is used to get dense corresponding points, and recover their 3D positions. Lastly, the 3D initial facial mesh is subdivided adaptively according to the distribution density of 3D points to construct the resulting model. To remove the reconstruct noise, second order Laplace operator is used to smooth the model. The result model is decorated by texture mapping. Experiments show that the algorithm is simple and can generate very realistic facial expression without expensive devices.

Abstract:3D face scans have been widely used for face modeling and analysis. Due to the fact that face scans provide variable point clouds across frames, they may not capture complete facial data or miss point-to-point correspondences across various facial scans, thus causing difficulties to use such data for analysis. This paper presents an efficient approach to representing facial shapes from face scans through the reconstruction of face models based on regional information and a generic model. A new approach for 3D feature detection and a hybrid approach using two vertex mapping algorithms, displacement mapping and point-to-surface mapping, and a regional blending algorithm are proposed to reconstruct the facial surface detail. The resulting models can represent individual facial shapes consistently and adaptively, establishing facial point correspondences across individual models. The accuracy of the generated models is evaluated quantitatively. The applicability of the models is validated through the application of 3D facial expression recognition using the static 3DFE and dynamic 4DFE databases. A comparison with the state of the art has also been reported.

Abstract:The Metaverse is a shared virtual space that allows individuals to interact with other users in a digital environment. Therefore, constructing a real 3D human body model in the Metaverse as a mapping of the real world is an indispensable content. It is currently very challenging to accurately and robustly model a 3D human body from a single image. The main problem is how to accurately reconstruct the detailed texture of the character, especially the facial texture that best characterizes the identity of the character. Therefore, we propose a 3D human reconstruction algorithm combined with facial features. By predicting the parameters of the 3DMM model, we construct a 3D facial model, extract the corresponding 3D facial features, and fuse them with the 2D image features to jointly realize the implicit prediction of the 3D human body. The method introduces 3D face model as prior knowledge, which greatly improves the accuracy of 3D human face reconstruction.

Abstract:With the increasing demands of applications in virtual reality such as 3D films, virtual Human-Machine Interactions and virtual agents, the analysis of 3D human face analysis is considered to be more and more important as a fundamental step for those virtual reality tasks. Due to information provided by an additional dimension, 3D facial reconstruction enables aforementioned tasks to be achieved with higher accuracy than those based on 2D facial analysis. The denser the 3D facial model is, the more information it could provide. However, most existing dense 3D facial reconstruction methods require complicated processing and high system cost. To this end, this paper presents a novel method that simplifies the process of dense 3D facial reconstruction by employing only one frame of depth data obtained with an off-the-shelf RGB-D sensor. The experiments showed competitive results with real world data.

Abstract:Reconstructing 3D digital models of humans from sensory data is a long-standing problem in computer vision and graphics with a variety of applications in VR/AR, film production, and human–computer interaction, etc. While a huge amount of effort has been devoted to developing various capture hardware and reconstruction algorithms, traditional reconstruction pipelines may still suffer from high-cost capture systems and tedious capture processes, which prevent them from being easily accessible. Moreover, the dedicatedly hand-crafted pipelines are prone to reconstruction artifacts, resulting in limited visual quality. To solve these challenges, the recent trend in this area is to use deep neural networks to improve reconstruction efficiency and robustness by learning human priors from existing data. Neural network-based implicit functions have been also shown to be a favorable 3D representation compared to traditional forms like meshes and voxels. Furthermore, neural rendering has emerged as a powerful tool to achieve highly photorealistic modeling and re-rendering of humans by end-to-end optimizing the visual quality of output images. In this article, we will briefly review these advances in this fast-developing field, discuss the advantages and limitations of different approaches, and finally, share some thoughts on future research directions.

Abstract:Human face is the most important content to distinguish and remember individuals from different characters. The rich information contained in it allows people to perform information transmission and identity authentication through face images. Compared with 2D plane faces, the face model in 3D space contains more complex and rich biological information. Therefore, 3D face reconstruction technology has long been one of the hotspots in the field of computer vision. In this paper, we propose a single-image 3D face reconstruction algorithm. In order to improve the accuracy and speed of image generation, we use an improved network framework based on GAN and a joint loss function, and finally we obtain a 3d face model containing texture features through detailed filling.

This paper introduces the modeling examples based on 3D reconstruction in VR devices, compares the advantages/disadvantages between various reconstruction methods and comprehensively introduces the combination of the different methods. Abstract:Text-guided 3D face reconstruction is an emerging field that leverages artificial intelligence to generate detailed and animatable 3D facial models from textual descriptions. This technology holds promise for revolutionizing digital content creation, avatar design, and virtual interaction by allowing users to convert textual imaginations into realistic 3D representations. This survey paper provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art methods in text-guided 3D face reconstruction, including ClipFace, DreamFace, TG-3DFace, and E3-FaceNet. We discuss their unique features, advantages, limitations, and the innovative techniques they employ to bridge the gap between natural language and 3D visual space. We also highlight the challenges that remain, such as achieving high fidelity and efficiency in the rendering process, and the potential for future advancements in this domain.

Abstract:International Journal of Computational Intelligence and Applications, Ahead of Print. In view of the problems of high production cost, scarcity and lack of diversity of 3D face datasets, this paper designs an end-to-end self-supervised learning 3D face reconstruction algorithm with a single 2D face image as input, which only uses 2D face datasets to complete model training. First, the improved ResNet module is introduced to preprocess the input face image. The deep residual neural network has strong feature extraction and characterization ability for the image, which can provide rich high-level semantic feature maps for the subsequent subnetwork. Then, add transformer module completely based on self-attention mechanism to the parameter prediction subnetwork, which can make different parameters of the subnetwork focus on self-related feature map information and avoid interference from invalid feature map information, so as to further improve the parameter prediction accuracy of the subnetwork. Next, training, ablation and comparison experiments were conducted on CelebA, BFM and Photoface datasets, and the combined function of pixel loss function and perceptual loss function was selected as the loss function. The experimental results show that: compared with the historical optimal results of the same network structure, the scale-invariant depth error (SIDE) and mean angle deviation (MAD) are improved by 5.9% and 10.8%, respectively, which strongly proves the effectiveness of the algorithm. Finally, in order to verify the actual effect of the 3D face reconstruction algorithm, examples are selected in this paper for reconstruction. The 3D faces generated by the algorithm all have a good sense of reality, which intuitively and effectively proves the advancement of the algorithm.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the emerging market of 3D facial reconstruction that supports numerous face-driven scenarios including modeling in virtual reality (VR), human-computer interaction, and affective computing applications. Current mainstream approaches rely on vision for 3D facial reconstruction, which may encounter privacy concerns and suffer from obstruction scenes and bad lighting conditions. In this paper, we present a nonintrusive 3D facial reconstruction system, mm3DFace , which leverages a millimeter wave (mmWave) radar to reconstruct 3D human faces that continuously express facial expressions in a privacy-preserving and passive manner. Based on the pre-processed mmWave signals, mm3DFace first extracts facial geometric features that capture subtle changes in facial expressions through a ConvNeXt model with triple loss embedding. Then, mm3DFace derives distance and orientation-robust facial shapes with 68 facial landmarks using region-divided affine transformation. mm3DFace next reconstructs facial expressions through a designed regional amplification method and finally generates 3D facial avatars that continuously express facial expressions. Extensive experiments involving 15 participants in real-world environments show that mm3DFace can accurately track 68 facial landmarks with 3.94% normalized mean error, 2.30 mm mean absolute error, and 4.10 mm 3D-mean absolute error, which is effective and practical in real-world 3D facial reconstruction.

To address this issue, we present the PR3D (Precise and Realistic 3D face reconstruction) method, which consists of high‐precision shape reconstruction based on semi‐supervised learning and high‐fidelity texture reconstruction based on StyleGAN2. Furthermore, to meet the real‐time requirements in practical applications, a lightweight shape reconstruction model called fast‐PR3D is distilled through teacher‐student learning. Reconstructing the three‐dimensional (3D) shape and texture of the face from a single image is a significant and challenging task in computer vision and graphics. In recent years, learning‐based reconstruction methods have exhibited outstanding performance, but their effectiveness is severely constrained by the scarcity of available training data with 3D annotations. To address this issue, we present the PR3D (Precise and Realistic 3D face reconstruction) method, which consists of high‐precision shape reconstruction based on semi‐supervised learning and high‐fidelity texture reconstruction based on StyleGAN2. In shape reconstruction, we use in‐the‐wild face images and 3D annotated datasets to train the auxiliary encoder and the identity encoder, encoding the input image into parameters of FLAME (a parametric 3D face model). Simultaneously, a novel semi‐supervised hybrid landmark loss is designed to more effectively learn from in‐the‐wild face images and 3D annotated datasets. Furthermore, to meet the real‐time requirements in practical applications, a lightweight shape reconstruction model called fast‐PR3D is distilled through teacher–student learning. In texture reconstruction, we propose a texture extraction method based on face reenactment in StyleGAN2 style space, extracting texture from the source and reenacted face images to constitute a facial texture map. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the state‐of‐the‐art performance of our method.

Abstract:High-fidelity facial avatar reconstruction from a monocular video is a significant research problem in computer graphics and computer vision. Recently, Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) has shown impressive novel view rendering results and has been considered for facial avatar reconstruction. However, the complex facial dynamics and missing 3D information in monocular videos raise significant challenges for faithful facial reconstruction. In this work, we propose a new method for NeRF-based facial avatar reconstruction that utilizes 3D-aware generative prior. Different from existing works that depend on a conditional deformation field for dynamic modeling, we propose to learn a personalized generative prior, which is formulated as a local and low dimensional subspace in the latent space of 3D-GAN. We propose an efficient method to construct the personalized generative prior based on a small set of facial images of a given individual. After learning, it allows for photo-realistic rendering with novel views and the face reenactment can be realized by performing navigation in the latent space. Our proposed method is applicable for different driven signals, including RGB images, 3DMM coefficients, and audios. Compared with existing works, we obtain superior novel view synthesis results and faithfully face reenactment performance.

Abstract:With the rapid development of virtual reality (VR) technology, VR glasses, a.k.a. Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) are widely available, allowing immersive 3D content to be viewed. A natural need for truly immersive VR is to allow bidirectional communication: the user should be able to interact with the virtual world using facial expressions and eye gaze, in addition to traditional means of interaction. Typical application scenarios include VR virtual conferencing and virtual roaming, where ideally users are able to see other users' expressions and have eye contact with them in the virtual world. Despite significant achievements in recent years for reconstruction of 3D faces from RGB or RGB- D images, it remains a challenge to reliably capture and reconstruct 3D facial expressions including eye gaze when the user is wearing VR glasses, because the majority of the face is occluded, especially those areas around the eyes which are essential for recognizing facial expressions and eye gaze. In this paper, we introduce a novel real-time system that is able to capture and reconstruct 3D faces wearing HMDs and robustly recover eye gaze. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system using live capture and more results are shown in the accompanying video.
3D Face Reconstruction Using A Spectral-Based Graph Convolution Encoder

Abstract:Monocular 3D face reconstruction plays a crucial role in avatar generation, with significant demand in web-related applications such as generating virtual financial advisors in FinTech. Current reconstruction methods predominantly rely on deep learning techniques and employ 2D self-supervision as a means to guide model learning. However, these methods encounter challenges in capturing the comprehensive 3D structural information of the face due to the utilization of 2D images for model training purposes. To overcome this limitation and enhance the reconstruction of 3D structural features, we propose an innovative approach that integrates existing 2D features with 3D features to guide the model learning process. Specifically, we introduce the 3D-ID Loss, which leverages the high-dimensional structure features extracted from a Spectral-Based Graph Convolution Encoder applied to the facial mesh. This approach surpasses the sole reliance on the 3D information provided by the facial mesh vertices coordinates. Our model is trained using 2D-3D data pairs from a combination of datasets and achieves state-of-the-art performance on the NoW benchmark.

Abstract:The use of virtual reality (VR) is exponentially increasing and due to that many researchers has started to work on developing new VR based social media. For this purpose it is important to have an avatar of the users which look like them to be easily generated by the devices which are accessible, such as mobile phone. In this paper, we propose a novel method of recreating a 3D human face model captured with a phone camera image or video data. The method focuses more on model shape than texture in order to make the face recognizable. We detect 68 facial feature points and use them to separate a face into four regions. For each area the best fitting models are found and are further morphed combined to find the best fitting models for each area. These are then combined and further morphed in order to restore the original facial proportions. We also present a method of texturing the resulting model, where the aforementioned feature points are used to generate a texture for the resulting model

Abstract:This paper proposes an efficient method to reconstruct human face models from 3D face scans using an adaptation algorithm based on regional information. The resulting model can represent individual facial shapes with various expressions, establishing dense correspondences across the whole facial expression sequences. We first initialize the global shape of the face model by implementing RBF interpolation. An efficient vertex mapping is then developed to reconstruct the surface details. The new 3D face are finally created by remapping the scan texture to the facial surface. Experiments show that our method can create effective 3D face models for continuous and realistic 3D facial animation.

Abstract:In order to realize 3 dimensional(3D)face reconstruction based on 2 dimensional(2D) frontal face image,this paper adopts a 3D face reconstruction method of shape and texture mapping based on the 2D frontal face image.Firstly,face image preprocessing,feature point extraction,2D face image pretreatment,and the coordinates and texture information are all obtained by through the active shape model and the explicit shape regression algorithm,that is,there are 3 1 performance feature information of the feature points are marked in the eyes,eyebrows,nose,mouth and other parts of the 2D frontal face image.Then,the standard 3D face model Candide-3 will be used to set up the mapping relationship between the dense 2D face image and the 3D face model by corresponding the 3 1 feature points accurately mapped on the 3D model,so that the 3D model with only statistical characteristics and the standard 3D face model without non personal characteristics becomes rich individuality and authenticity.Then,the face information extracted from the adaptation process,and the 3D model fits the cover with the texture mapping method,and the 3D face model is highly similar to the real human face obtained.We used texture mapping method to cover the 3D model after adaptation,so as to obtain 3D face model with the real face height.Finally,Open GL is used to the 2D image as texture mapping to the target 3D face model,and the 3D face model is deformed into a real 3D face.The experimental results show that the 3D face model interpolation method used in this paper remains similar with the original shape of the generic face model,and which has good smoothness and continuity.

Abstract:Online interaction with 3D facial animation is an alternative way of face-to-face communication for distance education. 3D facial modeling is essential for virtual educational environments establishment. This article presents a novel 3D facial modeling solution that facilitates quasi-facial communication for online learning. Our algorithm builds 3D facial models from a single image, with support of a 3D face database. First from the image, we extract a set of feature points, which are then used to automatically estimate the head pose parameters using the 3D mean face in our database as a reference model. After the pose recovery, a similarity measurement function is proposed to locate the neighborhood for the given image in the 3D face database. The scope of neighborhood can be determined adaptively using our cross-validation algorithm. Furthermore, the individual 3D shape is synthesized by neighborhood interpolation. Texture mapping is achieved based on feature points. The experimental results show that our algorithm can robustly produce 3D facial models from images captured in various scenarios to enhance the lifelikeness in distant learning.
