Abstract:The appearance of a face image is severely affected by illumination conditions that will hinder the automatic face recognition process. To recognize faces under varying lighting conditions, a homomorphic filtering-based illumination normalization method is proposed in this paper. In this work, the effect of illumination is effectively reduced by a modified implementation of homomorphic filtering whose key component is a Difference of Gaussian (DoG) filter, and the contrast is enhanced by histogram equalization. The resulted face image is not only reduced illumination effect but also preserved edges and details that will facilitate the further face recognition task. Among others, our method has the following advantages: (1) neither does it need any prior information of 3D shape or light sources, nor many training samples thus can be directly applied to single training image per person condition; and (2) it is simple and computationally fast because there are mature and fast algorithms for the Fourier transform used in homomorphic filter. The Eigenfaces method is chosen to recognize the normalized face images. Experimental results on the Yale face database B and the CMU PIE face database demonstrate the significant performance improvement of the proposed method in the face recognition system for the face images with large illumination variations.
Adaptive Illumination Normalization Via Adaptive Illumination Preprocessing and Modified Weber-Face

Abstract:Illumination processing is a challenging task in face recognition. This paper proposes a novel illumination normalization method that aims to remove illumination boundaries and improve image quality under dark conditions. Firstly, to improve the image quality, an adaptive illumination preprocessing algorithm is adopted. Then we modify the Weber-Face model by suppressing the components which are greatly affected by the illumination. Experimental results on both Extended Yale B and CMU-PIE databases show that the proposed method can obtain high performance under complex illumination conditions. The accuracy on the Extended Yale B database is 93.02% and on the CMU-PIE database is 70.44%, which is the highest among the similar approaches. This method not only greatly improves the face recognition rate but also keep the computational complexity in low compared with several state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient representation method insensitive to varying illumination is proposed for human face recognition. Theoretical analysis based on the human face model and the illumination model shows that the effects of varying lighting on a human face image can be modeled by a sequence of multiplicative and additive noises. Instead of computing these noises, which is very difficult for real applications, we aim to reduce or even remove their effect. In our method, a local normalization technique is applied to an image, which can effectively and efficiently eliminate the effect of uneven illuminations while keeping the local statistical properties of the processed image the same as in the corresponding image under normal lighting condition. After processing, the image under varying illumination will have similar pixel values to the corresponding image that is under normal lighting condition. Then, the processed images are used for face recognition. The proposed algorithm has been evaluated based on the Yale database, the AR database, the PIE database, the YaleB database and the combined database by using different face recognition methods such as PCA, ICA and Gabor wavelets. Consistent and promising results were obtained, which show that our method can effectively eliminate the effect of uneven illumination and greatly improve the recognition results.

Abstract:Traditional face recognition method usually faces the challenge of varying lighting condition. In this paper, we propose an illumination-invariant local binary descriptor learning method for face recognition. Unlike local binary descriptor (LBP) and its variants, which usually utilize the rigid sign function for binarization despite of data distributions. We first determine a dynamic thresholds strategy including the information of illumination variation to extract nonlinear multi-layer contrast features. Specially, Exponential Discriminant Analysis (EDA) is designed to act as preprocessing which can contribute to improve the discriminative ability of the face image by enlarging the margin between different classes relative to the same class. To further improve the recognition performance, we combined our preliminary work, the adaptive fuzzy fusion framework, to integrate the recognition results for multi-scale features spaces. Extensive experiments conducted on four face databases validate the effectiveness of the proposed method for illumination face recognition. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Abstract:Varying illumination is a huge challenge of face recognition. The variation caused by varying illumination in the face appearance can be much larger than the variation caused by personal identity. The high frequency signal component in image represents the detail characteristic of the face, and for the reason of being influenced scarcely by varying illumination, this signal component can be used as illumination invariance features in face recognition. However, the definition of the high frequency signal component is blurry, and it is impossible to separate this component from the face image exactly. Because of using the different decomposition methods and different decomposition parameters, high frequency component has been dispersed in decomposed detail images that characterize themselves by containing different scale frequency signal component. This paper proposes a framework to fuse that high frequency signal components in multi-scale detail images using adaptive weight. This novel framework is an open structure, and any method of getting illumination invariance feature can be applied on this framework. The experiment based on three open face databases shows the framework proposed by this paper can get remarkable performance.

Abstract:The performances of the current face recognition systems suffer heavily from the variations in lighting. To deal with this problem, this paper presents an illumination normalization approach by relighting face images to a canonical illumination based on the harmonic images model. Benefiting from the observations that human faces share similar shape, and the albedos of the face surfaces are quasi-constant, we first estimate the nine low-frequency components of the illumination from the input facial image. The facial image is then normalized to the canonical illumination by re-rendering it using the illumination ratio image technique. For the purpose of face recognition, two kinds of canonical illuminations, the uniform illumination and a frontal flash with the ambient lights, are considered, among which the former encodes merely the texture information, while the latter encodes both the texture and shading information. Our experiments on the CMU-PIE face database and the Yale B face database have shown that the proposed relighting normalization can significantly improve the performance of a face recognition system when the probes are collected under varying lighting conditions.

Abstract:The appearance of a face image is severely affected by illumination conditions that hinder the automatic face recognition process. To recognize faces under varying illuminations, we propose an improved wavelet-based normalization method so as to normalize illuminations. We decompose an image into its low frequency and high frequency components. Then different band coefficients are manipulated separately. We apply histogram equalization to the approximation (low frequency) coefficients and at the same time de-noise the detail (high frequency) coefficients adaptively and then accentuate them by multiplying by a scalar so as to enhance edges. A normalized image is obtained from the modified coefficients by inverse wavelet transform. Finally, We use PCA method to recognize normalized image with only one training image. The experimental results obtained by testing on the Yale Face Database B demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with significant improvement in the face recognition system.

Abstract:Face recognition,a non-contact and friendly biometric identification technology,has broad application prospects in the military,public security and economic security.Related research in recent years has made great progress,a number of excellent face recognition algorithms have emerged,and a number of face recognition systems have achieved good performance.However,many issues still remain to be addressed and illumination changes remain one of the major challenges for current face recognition systems.The report of FRVT 2006 shows that varying illumination will seriously affect the performance of face recognition.In order to eliminate the effect of varying illumination on face recognition,a novel illumination invariant method based on nonsubsampled Contourlet transform is proposed.Firstly,we perform illumination normalization on images under varying illumination,which can reduce the effect of varying illumination to some extent.Secondly,the logarithmric transformation and the nonsubsampled Contourlet transform is used to decompose the images into its low frequency and high frequency directional subband components.Thirdly,adaptive NormalShrink is applied to each directional subband to eliminate noise,and the histogram equalization is applied to the low frequency components aimed at weakening the illumination affects further.Lastly,the illumination invariant is obtained by inverse nonsubsampled Contourlet transform using the modified low frequency components and high frequency directional subband components.Experimental results on the Yale face database B and CMU PIE database show that the proposed method can effectively eliminate the effect of varying illumination on face recognition and the obtained illumination invariant is robust.

Abstract:A face image can be represented by a combination of large-and small-scale features. It is well-known that the variations of illumination mainly affect the large-scale features (low-frequency components), and not so much the small-scale features. Therefore, in relevant existing methods only the small-scale features are extracted as illumination-invariant features for face recognition, while the large-scale intrinsic features are always ignored. In this paper, we argue that both large-and small-scale features of a face image are important for face restoration and recognition. Moreover, we suggest that illumination normalization should be performed mainly on the large-scale features of a face image rather than on the original face image. A novel method of normalizing both the Small-and Large-scale (S&L) features of a face image is proposed. In this method, a single face image is first decomposed into large-and small-scale features. After that, illumination normalization is mainly performed on the large-scale features, and only a minor correction is made on the small-scale features. Finally, a normalized face image is generated by combining the processed large-and small-scale features. In addition, an optional visual compensation step is suggested for improving the visual quality of the normalized image. Experiments on CMU-PIE, Extended Yale B, and FRGC 2.0 face databases show that by using the proposed method significantly better recognition performance and visual results can be obtained as compared to related state-of-the-art methods.

Comparative Analysis of Illumination Normalizations on Principal Component Analysis Based Feature Extraction for Face Recognition

Abstract:Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is an appearance-based technique for extraction of feature extraction that is commonly used in computer vision and image processing. This technique suffers from illumination variations, thus knowing which illumination control method to be used in PCA-based face recognition system is very important. This paper applies three selected normalization techniques; Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Adaptive Histogram Equalization (AHE) and Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) to normalize face images. PCA was further used to extract features from the normalized face images. Euclidean distance was used to classify extracted features. The best recognition accuracy of 91.84% was obtained in DCT for ORL Database, while the best accuracy of 76% was achieved in DCT for FERET Database. The highest FAR of 0.9 was achieved in DCT for ORL Database, while the highest FAR of 0.5 was obtained in DCT and AHE for FERET Database. The highest FRR of 0.2821 was achieved in CLAHE for ORL Database, while 0.3000 was obtained in AHE for FERET Database. It was concluded that illumination control approaches have predominant effect on PCA–based facial recognition system. Abstract:In order to improve the accuracy of face recognition under varying illumination conditions, a local texture enhanced illumination normalization method based on fusion of differential filtering images (FDFI-LTEIN) is proposed to weaken the influence caused by illumination changes. Firstly, the dynamic range of the face image in dark or shadowed regions is expanded by logarithmic transformation. Then, the global contrast enhanced face image is convolved with difference of Gaussian filters and difference of bilateral filters, and the filtered images are weighted and merged using a coefficient selection rule based on the standard deviation (SD) of image, which can enhance image texture information while filtering out most noise. Finally, the local contrast equalization (LCE) is performed on the fused face image to reduce the influence caused by over or under saturated pixel values in highlight or dark regions. Experimental results on the Extended Yale B face database and CMU PIE face database demonstrate that the proposed method is more robust to illumination changes and achieve higher recognition accuracy when compared with other illumination normalization methods and a deep CNNs based illumination invariant face recognition method

Abstract:Evaluations of the state-of-the-art of both academic face recognition algorithms and commercial systems have shown that recognition performance of most current technologies degrades due to the variations of illumination. This paper investigates several illumination normalization methods and proposes some novel solutions. The main contribution of this paper includes: (1) A Gamma Intensity Correction (GIC) method is proposed to normalize the overall image intensity at the given illumination level; (2) A Region-based strategy combining GIC and the Histogram Equalization (HE) is proposed to further eliminate the side-lighting effect; (3) A Quotient Illumination Relighting (QIR) method is presented to synthesize images under a pre-defined normal lighting condition from the provided face images captured under non-normal lighting condition. These methods are evaluated and compared on the Yale illumination face database B and Harvard illumination face database. Considerable improvements are observed. Some conclusions are given at last.

Abstract:Local binary pattern (LBP) operator offers an efficient way to recognize face under varying illumination, while it has the drawback of abandoning some important texture features. Local multiple patterns (LMP) has alleviated the problem by a hierarchical model. However, the LMP method can bring out the rapid expansion of feature dimension, so a special feature encoding method is adopted by this paper. Meanwhile, we find that the LMP features of different layers can be used to recognize face independently so that it would preserve more abundant recognition information. Most importantly, the contribution of the LMP features from different layers is blurry under varying illumination. We propose a fuzzy framework to fuse the recognition result of different layers and use adaptive weights to calculate contribution rates of different layers under varying illumination. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods on four databases such as Yale B, Extended Yale B, CMU PIE and Outdoor.

Abstract:In recent years, face recognition has achieved high accuracy and has been widely used in many fields. However, the performance of face recognition is not satisfied in some unrestricted situations such as in monitoring scenarios. The light field camera, as an image acquisition equipment, can capture images before focusing them and allows us to achieve clearer images. However, the existing face recognition algorithms based on light field camera need to search the optimal face manually. In this paper, an automatic algorithm for optimal face search is proposed. With this search algorithm, a new face recognition framework based on light field camera is proposed. Two face recognition algorithms are used to test the proposed framework. The experimental results show that the proposed methods combined with the light field camera can achieve better results than with conventional camera and the whole framework does not need extra manual operation.

Abstract:Illumination variation is among the several bottlenecks in a practical face recognition system. Extracting illumination‐invariant features, such as the gradient‐based descriptor, is an effective method to deal with this problem and shows outstanding performance. In this paper, a novel illumination‐invariant, histogram‐based descriptor, namely local Gradientface XOR and binary pattern (LGXBP), is proposed to enhance the recognition performance of gradient‐based method under varying lighting conditions. To this end, first, this approach transforms a face image into the logarithm domain and obtains a pair of illumination‐insensitive components. Then the two components are encoded further by local XOR patterns and local binary patterns, respectively, to get compact descriptors and histogram representations, which not only preserve illumination invariance but also gain more discriminating power. Finally, the complementary histograms are integrated for face recognition. Comparative experimental results verify the effectiveness of our approach and show that LGXBP achieves superior recognition rates and a high degree of stability under varying illumination conditions, outperforming most of the state‐of‐the‐art methods. © 2014 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel homomorphic wavelet filtering based illumination transfer technique to change the dominant lighting of one face image (source face image) to another face image (reference face image ). Specifically, in the proposed method, based on the ldquoreflectance-illuminationrdquo imaging model, we first obtain an approximate estimate of the illumination component of the face image through a wavelet-based Multiresolution Analysis (MRA) in the logarithm domain of the input image. Then, a homomorphic filtering procedure is applied to improve the accuracy of the illumination component estimation. Finally, the source face image is re-lighted by substituting the estimated illumination component of the reference image for that of the source image. The proposed method is entirely an image processing based method without any 3D geometry modeling steps, so it is simple but effective. The method is also applied easily to illumination invariant face recognition by transferring a standard illumination to all the face images. Experimental results show that our method is quite effective for both illumination transfer and illumination-insensitive face recognition.

Abstract:Face recognition research in unconstrained environments has focused mainly on the three classical causes of variation, i.e., Pose, Illumination, and Expression (PIE). Another recently identified issue is facial makeup that poses a significant challenge to face recognition systems. We believe that applying makeup can cause changes similar to the ones observed due to illumination variation. Therefore, in this paper, we have investigated the effectiveness of illumination normalization techniques for decreasing the variations caused by makeup in a face recognition system. First, we apply photometric illumination normalization techniques with their parameters adjusted for face recognition. Next, we extract facial features using texture-based feature extraction methods and perform face recognition using Support Vector Machines. Experiments carried out on both constrained and unconstrained databases clearly show that illumination normalization techniques improve face recognition results.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for face image normalization that can be applied to the extraction of illumination invariant facial features or used to remove bad lighting effects and produce high-quality, photorealistic results. Most of the existing approaches concentrate on separating the constant albedo from the variable light intensity; that concept, however, is based on the Lambertian model, which fails in the presence of specularities and cast shadows. Therefore, to tackle this problem, various methods use bootstrap sets to learn the reflectance model of a given person or a face in general. Unfortunately, algorithms of this type are usually not practical for real applications. The proposed approach does not require any training procedure, as the normalization is performed only on the basis of information that is contained in the image that is being processed. Still, external knowledge that is represented by the deformable shape model is employed to execute the localization of the important points, such as eye centers. Additionally, an assumption regarding the symmetry of the face is utilized. The rest of the normalization algorithm relies mostly on simple image processing techniques. Experiments on the CMU-PIE and Extended Yale B databases show that the new method not only provides satisfactory recognition results but is also able to generate natural-looking images.
