Abstract:In this paper, the compact least-squares finite volume method on unstructured grids proposed in our previous paper is extended to multi-dimensional systems, namely the two-dimensional Euler equations. The key element of this scheme is the compact least-squares reconstruction in which a set of constitutive relations are constructed by requiring the reconstruction polynomial and its spatial derivatives on the control volume of interest to conserve their averages on the face-neighboring cells. These relations result in an over-determined linear equation system. A large sparse system of linear equations is resulted by using the least-squares technique. An efficient solution strategy is of crucial importance for the application of the proposed scheme in multi-dimensional problems since both direct and iterative solvers for this system are computationally very expensive. In the present paper, it is found that in the cases of steady flow simulation and unsteady flow simulation using dual time stepping technique, the present reconstruction method can be coupled with temporal discretization scheme to achieve high computational efficiency. The WBAP limiter and a problem-independent shock detector are used in the simulation of flow with discontinuities. Numerical results demonstrate the high order accuracy, high computational efficiency and capability of handling both complex physics and geometries of the proposed schemes.

Abstract:A compact high-order scheme has been successfully proposed and verified in this paper. In this scheme, the traditional gradient reconstruction was replaced with a compact scheme. There were no needs to modify the process and algorithms of unstructured FVM including boundary conditions, flux technique, limiter functions and so on. Both memory and computation loads with the new scheme were not increased than the traditional one. Additionally, we modified Venkatakrishnan limiter to suppress numerical oscillation. The proposed compact scheme and modified Venkatakrishnan limiter have been verified with numerical experiments on benchmark problems. Numerical results showed good agreement with those obtained by other methods.

Abstract:In this paper, the second in a series, the high order sub-cell finite volume method is extended to two-dimensional hyperbolic systems on unstructured quadrilateral grids. The basic idea of this method is to subdivide a control volume (main cell) into several sub-cells and the finite volume method is applied to each of the sub-cells. The average values on the sub-cells belonging to current and face neighboring main cells are used to reconstruct a common polynomial distribution of a dependent variable on current main cell. This method can achieve high order accuracy using a compact stencil. The focus of this paper is to study the performance of the sub-cell finite volume method on two-dimensional unstructured quadrilateral grids and to verify that high order accuracy can be achieved using face neighboring sub-cells only. Fourier analysis is performed to analyze the dispersion and dissipation properties of the two-dimensional sub-cell finite volume schemes. To capture the discontinuities, the paper proposes a cell-based multi-dimensional limiting procedure using only face-neighboring main cells. Several benchmark test cases are simulated to validate the proposed sub-cell finite volume schemes and the multi-dimensional limiting procedure.

Abstract:The large reconstruction stencil has been the major bottleneck problem in developing high order finite volume schemes on unstructured grids. This paper presents a compact reconstruction procedure for arbitrarily high order finite volume method on unstructured grids to overcome this shortcoming. In this procedure, a set of constitutive relations are constructed by requiring the reconstruction polynomial and its derivatives on the control volume of interest to conserve their averages on face-neighboring cells. These relations result in an over-determined linear equation system, which, in the sense of least-squares, can be reduced to a block-tridiagonal system in the one-dimensional case. The one-dimensional formulations of the reconstruction are discussed in detail and a Fourier analysis is presented to study the dispersion/dissipation and stability properties. The WBAP limiter based on the secondary reconstruction is used to suppress the non-physical oscillations near discontinuities while achieve high order accuracy in smooth regions of the solution. Numerical results demonstrate the method's high order accuracy, robustness and shock capturing capability. A new reconstruction procedure for high order finite volume scheme is proposed.This procedure can achieve arbitrary order of accuracy using a compact stencil consisting of only face neighboring cells.The spectral properties of the proposed finite volume schemes are analyzed.Some test cases are solved numerically to show the superior performances of the proposed schemes.

Abstract:This paper presents a variational reconstruction for the high order finite volume method in solving the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations on arbitrary unstructured grids. In the variational reconstruction, an interfacial jump integration is defined to measure the jumps of the reconstruction polynomial and its spatial derivatives on each cell interface. The system of linear equations to determine the reconstruction polynomials is derived by minimizing the total interfacial jump integration in the computational domain using the variational method. On each control volume, the derived equations are implicit relations between the coefficients of the reconstruction polynomials defined on a compact stencil involving only the current cell and its direct face-neighbors. The reconstruction and time integration coupled iteration method proposed in our previous paper is used to achieve high computational efficiency. A problem-independent shock detector and the WBAP limiter are used to suppress non-physical oscillations in the simulation of flow with discontinuities. The advantages of the finite volume method using the variational reconstruction over the compact least-squares finite volume method proposed in our previous papers are higher accuracy, higher computational efficiency, more flexible boundary treatment and non-singularity of the reconstruction matrix. A number of numerical test cases are solved to verify the accuracy, efficiency and shock-capturing capability of the finite volume method using the variational reconstruction.

Abstract:In the present paper, high-order finite volume schemes on unstructured grids developed in our previous papers are extended to solve three-dimensional inviscid and viscous flows. The highorder variational reconstruction technique in terms of compact stencil is improved to reduce local condition numbers. To further improve the efficiency of computation, the adaptive mesh refinement technique is implemented in the framework of high-order finite volume methods. Mesh refinement and coarsening criteria are chosen to be the indicators for certain flow structures. One important challenge of the adaptive mesh refinement technique on unstructured grids is the dynamic load balancing in parallel computation. To solve this problem, the open-source library p4 est based on the forest of octrees is adopted. Several two-and three-dimensional test cases are computed to verify the accuracy and robustness of the proposed numerical schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, the multidimensional limiter for the second order finite volume schemes on the unstructured grid, namely the Weighted Biased Average procedure developed in our previous paper is extended to high order finite volume schemes solving hyperbolic conservation laws. This extension relies on two key techniques: the secondary reconstruction and the successive limiting procedure. These techniques are discussed in detail in the present paper. Numerical experiments shows that this limiting procedure is very effective in removing numerical oscillations in the vicinity of discontinuities. And furthermore this procedure is efficient, robust and accuracy preserving.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel and efficient compact reconstruction procedure for high-order finite volume methods applied to unstructured grids. In this procedure, we establish a set of constitutive relations that ensure the continuity of the reconstruction polynomial and its normal derivatives between adjacent elements at control points. The paper delves into the details of the fourth-order compact reconstruction method specifically designed for two-dimensional triangular grids. This method can be considered an extension of the one-dimensional compact scheme and cubic spline interpolation methods to two-dimensional triangular unstructured grids. In the cubic polynomial reconstruction, a two-dimensional cubic polynomial is reconstructed using the cell averages of elements in the standard stencil and the function values at control points. The determination of function values at control points is achieved by adhering to the constraint of normal derivative continuity. This reconstruction is solved using a relaxation iteration method and has been verified to be solvable for triangular grids. Compared to other fourth-order implicit compact polynomial reconstructions, our method requires solving a smaller number of unknowns, which means less computational cost in reconstruction. By applying this method to solve the Poisson equation, the linear convection equation, and incompressible flow benchmarks, it demonstrates that the proposed method exhibits the expected high-order accuracy and performs well in incompressible flow problems.

Abstract:This paper presents a high-accuracy method for solving 2-D incompressible viscous N-S equations in tensor forms. A domain decomposition method was used to divide the computational domain into several regular blocks with the overlapping grid in order to transfer data between sub-domains and to remove numerical singularity caused by domain decomposition. Using the method and algorithm presented above, the flow passing an ellipse was computed and the formation and evolution of the vortex shedding was successfully simulated.

Abstract:A general high-order unstructured-grid finite volume method based on least-square reconstruction and WENO limiter is presented.Some of the neighboring cells are employed to construct high-order polynomials,a least-square method is used to solve over-determined problem.The number of neighboring cells can be reduced with a general method,which saves memory and computing time.To achieve uniform accuracy and depress non-physical oscillation of conservation laws,a WENO limiter and rotated Riemann solver are employed.Two classical cases are provided to show resolution differences between high-order schemes and the second order scheme based on gradient reconstruction and Bath and Jesperson limiter.

Abstract:In the present paper, a multi-step reconstruction procedure is proposed for high order finite volume schemes on unstructured grids using compact stencil. The procedure is a recursive algorithm that can eventually provide sufficient relations for high order reconstruction in a multi-step procedure. Two key elements of this procedure are the partial inversion technique and the continuation technique. The partial inversion can be used not only to obtain lower order reconstruction based on existing reconstruction relations, but also to regularize the existing reconstruction relations to provide new relations for higher order reconstructions. The continuation technique is to extend the regularized relations on the face-neighboring cells to current cell as additional reconstruction relations. This multi-step procedure is operationally compact since in each step only the relations defined on a compact stencil are used. In the present paper, the third and fourth order finite volume schemes based on two-step quadratic and three-step cubic reconstructions are studied.

Abstract:We proposed an efficient and robust algorithm to solve the steady Euler equations on unstructured grids. The new algorithm is a Newton-iteration method in which every iteration step is a linear multigrid method using block lower-upper symmetric Gauss-Seidel (LU-SGS) iteration as its smoother. To regularize the Jacobian matrix of Newtoniteration, we adopted a local residual dependent regularization, as the replacement of the standard time-stepping relaxation technique based on the local CFL number. The proposed method can be extended to high order approximations and three spatial dimensions in a nature way. The solver was tested on a sequence of benchmark problems on both quasi-uniform and local adaptive meshes. Fruitful numerical results illustrated the efficiency and robustness of our algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, a high order finite volume scheme for solving the non-conservative convection equations on the unstructured grids is proposed. It is found that when the non-conservative convection equations are rewritten into the conservative form with additional source term, the direct application of the finite volume scheme using high order reconstruction will produce numerical instability. To solve this problem, we propose in the present paper to solve the integral form of the non-conservative convection equations. To account for the upwinding effect, a convective reconstruction technique is proposed. The proposed method is applied to solve a linear advection equation and the eikonal equation in time dependent non-conservative form. An artificial viscosity term is added to handle the singularity of the equation. The numerical results show that the proposed numerical scheme can achieve high order accuracy and is very robust.

Abstract:In this paper, high-order compact finite volume schemes on the unstructured grids based on the variational reconstruction are developed to solve the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations closed by the Spalart-Allmaras one-equation turbulence model. Encouraging progress is made in addressing the following two challenging problems: reducing the numerical errors on the large aspect ratio grids and avoiding the negative turbulent viscosity associated with the high-order methods. On grids with large aspect ratios, a three-step procedure is designed to optimize the functional parameters of variational reconstruction. In addition, an exponential decay procedure is proposed to cure the negative turbulent viscosity problem of the Spalart-Allmaras model. The exponential decay procedure has the advantage of being able to be used with any spatial discretization method and with the implicit temporal discretization. Numerical tests show significant benefits of the high-order schemes in predicting the skin frictions, capturing some important flow structures, and achieving grid-independent solutions. The numerical tests also show that the proposed schemes are sufficiently robust for practical applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a high order least square-based finite difference-finite volume (LSFD-FV) method together with lattice Boltzmann flux solver for accurate simulation of incompressible flows on unstructured grids. Within each control cell, a high order polynomial, which is based on Taylor series expansion, is applied to approximate the solution function. The derivatives in the Taylor series expansion are approximated by the functional values at the centers of neighboring cells using the mesh-free least square-based finite difference (LSFD) method developed by Ding et al. (2004) [36]. In the high order finite volume method, the recently developed lattice Boltzmann flux solver (LBFS) is applied to evaluate the inviscid and viscous fluxes physically and simultaneously at the cell interface by local reconstruction of lattice Boltzmann solution. Compared with traditional k-exact high-order finite volume method, the present method is more accurate and efficient. Various benchmark examples are tested to validate the high-order accuracy, high computational efficiency and flexibility of the proposed method on unstructured grids.

Abstract:A compact fourth-order finite difference scheme with only nineteen points in a cube is proposed to solve the three-dimensional(3D) convection diffusion equation with variable coefficients. Multigrid method is designed to solve the resulting sparse linear systems. Numerical experiments are conducted to test the accuracy of the fourth-order compact difference scheme and compare it with the standard second-order difference scheme. It shows that the present method with less computational cost is more stable and yields more accurate solutions than center difference scheme with seven points for low to high mesh Reynolds number problems.

Abstract:<p>Presently, an approximate delta function (ADF) is defined in multi-dimensional space in the form of a finite-order polynomial that holds identical integral properties to the Dirac delta function when used in conjunction with a finite-order polynomial integrand spanning a finite domain. By using this ADF over a two-dimensional unstructured mesh, a compact high-order point-value enhanced finite volume method (PFV) is constructed. The corresponding scheme is capable of storing and updating cell-averaged values inside each element as well as the unknown quantities and their derivatives (when needed) on vertex points. The sharing of vertex information with surrounding elements reduces the number of degrees of freedom relative to other compact and high-order methods of comparable convergence rate. To ensure conservation, cell-averaged values are updated using an identical approach to the one traditionally followed in the finite volume method. To verify the performance of the PFV scheme at successive orders, its accuracy and stability are vetted using benchmark problems associated with the two-dimensional wave and Euler equations encompassing a total of six standard test cases.</p>

Abstract:Based on Taylor's series expansion of continuous function,a high order compact finite difference scheme on non-uniform grid for 1D steady convection diffusion problems is developed.BiCGStab(2) method is employed to solve the resulting algebraic systems of equations.Compared with some conventional difference schemes,the present scheme has many advantages such as yielding more accurate numerical solutions,having high resolution for the large gradient changes of the unknown quantity,being well suitable for both convection-dominant flow and diffusion-dominant flow,and so on.It is also point out that the appropriate structure of a non-uniform grid can lead to a solution superior to that for a uniform grid structure with the same grid points.
