Abstract:Data-driven equation identification for dynamical systems has achieved great progress, which for static systems, however, has not kept pace. Unlike dynamical systems, static systems are time invariant, so we cannot capture discrete data along the time stream, which requires identifying governing equations only from scarce data. This work is devoted to this topic, building a data-driven method for extracting the differential-variational equations that govern static behaviors only from scarce, noisy data of responses, loads, as well as the values of system attributes if available. Compared to the differential framework typically adopted in equation identification, the differential-variational framework, due to its spatial integration and variation arbitrariness, brings some advantages, such as high robustness to data noise and low requirements on data amounts. The application, efficacy, and all the aforementioned advantages of this method are demonstrated by four numerical examples, including three continuous systems and one discrete system.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply the modified variational iteration method to a generalized Hirota-Satsuma coupled Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. The numerical solutions of the initial value problem of the generalized Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV equation are provided. Numerical results are given to show the efficiency of the modified variational iteration method.

Abstract:The elastodynamic problems of magneto-electro-elastic hollow cylinders in the state of axisymmetric plane strain case can be transformed into two Volterra integral equations of the second kind about two functions with respect to time. Interpolation functions were introduced to approximate two unknown functions in each time subinterval and two new recursive formulae are derived. By using the recursive formulae, numerical results were obtained step by step. Under the same time step, the accuracy of the numerical results by the present method is much higher than that by the traditional quadrature method.

Abstract:In this paper, an iterative learning control algorithm is proposed for discrete linear time-varying systems to track iteration-varying desired trajectories. A high-order internal model (HOIM) is utilized to describe the variation of desired trajectories in the iteration domain. In the sequel, the HOIM is incorporated into the design of learning gains. The learning convergence in the iteration axis can be guaranteed with rigorous proof. The simulation results with permanent magnet linear motors (PMLM) demonstrate that the proposed HOIM based approach yields good performance and achieves perfect tracking.

Abstract:This paper proposes a symmetry–iteration hybrid algorithm for solving boundary value problems for partial differential equations. First, the multi-parameter symmetry is used to reduce the problem studied to a simpler initial value problem for ordinary differential equations. Then the variational iteration method is employed to obtain its solution. The results reveal that the proposed method is very effective and can be applied for other nonlinear problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the inverse problem for the time‐fractional two‐dimensional Cahn–Hilliard equation. The ill‐posedness and a conditional stability of the inverse problem are proved. We present a new iterative variational regularization method to solve it. The convergence rates of the regularized solutions under the a priori regularization parameter choice rule and a posteriori regularization parameter choice rule are obtained. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness and stability of our proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an iterative algorithm for a simplified friction problem which is formulated as an elliptic variational inequality of the second kind. We approximate the simplified friction problem by a discrete system with the finite element method. Based on the use of the linearized technique and by constructing a particular function, we put forward the new algorithm to get the discrete solution. This algorithm is attractive due to its simple proof of convergence and easy implementation. A linear equation is solved in each iteration. Numerical results confirm that our algorithm is efficient and mesh independent.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Lagrangian functions for a class of second-order differential systems arising from physics. For such systems, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Lagrangian functions. Based on the variational principle and the splitting technique, we construct variational integrators and prove their equivalence to the composition of explicit symplectic methods. We apply the newly derived variational integrators to the Kepler problem and demonstrate their effectiveness in numerical simulations. Moreover, using the modified Lagrangian, we analyze the dynamical behavior of the numerical solutions in preserving the Laplace--Runge--Lenz (LRL) vector.

Abstract:In this research, we propose an advanced variational iteration method by employing the Adomian polynomials with the variational iteration method to solve the system of third‐order nonlinear Emden–Fowler‐type equations arise in several applications. The third‐order nonlinear Emden–Fowler‐type equations have singularity at origin and are characterized by two models, with the shaped factor appearing two times in the first model and once in the other model. The proposed method overcomes the singularity at the origin and handles both models with different‐shaped factors. The convergence study of the proposed method for both models is also discussed in Banach space. Five models of interest are provided to test the validity and efficiency of the proposed method. The investigations confirm that the proposed method is able to solve complex problems in a few iterations with less computational time.

Abstract:We propose and study an alternating inertial algorithm for approximating a solution to the variational inequality problem on an Hadamard manifold. The proposed method combines the inertial technique and the Tseng extragradient method with self-adaptive step sizes. We establish some convergence results for our iterative procedure when the variational inequality problem is governed by pseudomonotone vector fields. We present the results of some numerical experiments which show the competitive advantage of our algorithm over earlier methods in the literature.

Furthermore, we highlight certain implications and present numerical observations to underscore the significance of our findings. The proposed theorem extends and consolidates several previously published works.

Abstract:The variational data assimilation scheme (VAR) is applied to investigating the advective effect and the evolution of the control variables in time splitting semi-Lagrangian framework. Two variational algorithms are used. One is the conjugate code method-direct approach, and another is the numerical backward integration of analytical adjoint equation—indirect approach. Theoretical derivation and sensitivity tests are conducted in order to verify the consistency and inconsistency of the two algorithms under the semi-Lagrangian framework. On the other hand, the sensitivity of the perfect and imperfect initial condition is also tested in both direct and indirect approaches. Our research has shown that the two algorithms are not only identical in theory, but also identical in numerical calculation. Furthermore, the algorithms of the indirect approach are much more feasible and efficient than that of the direct one when both are employed in the semi-Lagrangian framework. Taking advantage of semi-Lagrangian framework, one purpose of this paper is to illustrate when the variational assimilation algorithm is concerned in the computational method of the backward integration, the algorithm is extremely facilitated. Such simplicity in indirect approach should be meaningful for the VAR design in passive model. Indeed, if one can successfully split the diabatic and adiabatic process, the algorithms represented in this paper might be easily used in a more general vision of atmospheric model.

Abstract:This paper deals with finding an approximate solution to an index three time-varying linear differential algebraic control equations based on the theory of variational formulation. The critical points of the formulated variational functional subject to the differential- algebraic equation with the class of consistent initial conditions are shown to be the solution of the proposed index-three DAEs with control problem (singular control systems) and vise- versa. The given variational problem is also transformed from indirect method into direct method using generalized Ritz bases technique. From the numerical illustrations results, the efficiency and very good accuracy as well as the simplicity of the present approach are obtained.

Abstract:We show that symplectic and linearly-implicit integrators proposed by [Zhang and Skeel, 1997] are variational linearizations of Newmark methods. When used in conjunction with penalty methods (i.e., methods that replace constraints by stiff potentials), these integrators permit coarse time-stepping of holonomically constrained mechanical systems and bypass the resolution of nonlinear systems. Although penalty methods are widely employed, an explicit link to Lagrange multiplier approaches appears to be lacking; such a link is now provided (in the context of two-scale flow convergence [Tao, Owhadi and Marsden, 2010]). The variational formulation also allows efficient simulations of mechanical systems on Lie groups.

Abstract:Ordinary Differential Equations are generally too complex to be solved analytically. Approximations thereof can be obtained by general purpose numerical methods. However, even though accurate schemes have been developed, they remain computationally expensive: In this paper, we resort to the theory of modified equations in order to obtain ''on the fly'' cheap numerical approximations. The recipe consists in approximating, prior to that, the modified field associated to the modified equation by neural networks. Elementary convergence results are then established and the efficiency of the technique is demonstrated on experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we present two novel multi-step inertial iterative methods to approximate a common element that combines equilibrium problems with other problems in real Hilbert spaces. Firstly, by combining equilibrium problems, fixed point problems and a general system of variational inequalities, we adopt a conjugate gradient method to solve them. Secondly, by integrating equilibrium problems, fixed point problems and split feasibility problems, we employ a S -iteration process to address them. Under appropriate assumptions and mild conditions, we obtain strong convergence theorems of our proposed algorithms. Finally, some numerical experiments are provided to test and verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.
