Abstract:The objective of this paper is to compare the spectral characteristics of vacuum arc plasma under different anode materials. The experiment was based on the butt type contact, with diameter D=40mm and gap distance g=10mm. We used copper cathode, while the materials of anode were aluminum, iron and chromium respectively. The vacuum arc was ignited by a needle tungsten electrode, which was embedded in the cathode. A high-voltage pulse with a rise time of 8ns, and aptitude of 24kV was applied on the needle electrode. The arc current was measured by Hall sensor and the arc voltage was measured by Tektronix P6015A, respectively. The emission intensities of the inter-electrode vacuum arc plasma were collected by an optics spectrograph. The typical emission spectra of the vacuum arc plasma were obtained under copper cathode to aluminum anode, iron anode and chromium anode respectively. It can be seen that the spectra of the inter-electrode plasma concentrate in visible light band, from 300 to 700nm. The spectra mainly include different emission lines of copper, aluminum, iron, and chromium upon a lower continuum. Both the intensities and the quantity of the emission lines were increased as the current increased. Moreover the increased lines were mainly produced by the anode material.
