Abstract:Using the Web data mining technology to predict the user's future request and make recommendation is one aspect of personalized Web service. A clustering algorithm competitive agglomeration for relation data (CARD) is presented to analyze user access logs of Web server and an experimental model is constructed on the basis of analysis. CARD is based on CA that can adaptively process Web data. The tests are based on realistic Web logs. CARD has proved to be more applicable than CA in Web data mining and yielded superior results.

Abstract:With the advent of web2.0 era, it has been becoming increasingly easy to create and share Internet content. Plenty of pictures are uploaded to the Internet every day. A primary challenge against traditional image retrieval technologies is how to help users quickly discover the images they need. Personalised image retrieval is a new trend in the field of image retrieval. It not only improves the accuracy of the existing retrieval systems, but also better meets the users' needs. Personalised image retrieval and recommendation (PIRR) can be grouped into two main categories, content-based PIRR and collaborative filtering (CF)-based PIRR. This paper first summarises the development of image retrieval and introduces different image retrieval solutions. Then the key technologies of content-based PIRR are analysed from three aspects, user interest acquisition, user interest representation and personalised implementation. Different techniques are compared and analysed. Regarding CF-based PIRR, the user-based, item-based and model-based CF-based PIRR are introduced and compared. At the end of the paper, we compare and summarise content-based PIRR and CF-based PIRR.

Abstract:Presently, more and more Web-based technologies are adopted in e-Learning environment to provide users with relatively convenient and efficient access to the resources on the World Wide Web. Personalized support for learners is becoming even more important when the learning recourse volume is increasing with a dramatic speed. This paper represents the idea of using Web usage mining techniques to enhance the personalized capabilities of e-Learning environment. We describe the idea based on three-tier architecture as data collection and preprocessing, pattern discovery and pattern analysis. Brief algorithms in pattern discovery process are presented. We also show the system architecture of how to integrate the Web usage mining process into the e-Learning system.

Current searching techniques are able to retrieve relevant data; however, personalization techniques are still needed to better identify different user's requirements. This paper proposes an interactive and iterative approach to infer a user's intentions implicitly, and adapt to changing user requirements. We illustrate the approach using a personalized academic paper searching application. The system design is extensible and applicable to many search domains.

Abstract:Current Web search engines are built to serve all users, independent of the special needs of any individual user. Personalization of Web search is to carry out retrieval for each user incorporating his/her interests. We propose a novel technique to learn user profiles from users' search histories. The user profiles are then used to improve retrieval effectiveness in Web search. A user profile and a general profile are learned from the user's search history and a category hierarchy, respectively. These two profiles are combined to map a user query into a set of categories which represent the user's search intention and serve as a context to disambiguate the words in the user's query. Web search is conducted based on both the user query and the set of categories. Several profile learning and category mapping algorithms and a fusion algorithm are provided and evaluated. Experimental results indicate that our technique to personalize Web search is both effective and efficient.

Abstract:ABSTRACTCloud computing has become a hot topic in the IT industry. Great efforts have been made to establish cloud computing platforms for enterprise users, mostly small businesses. However, there are few researches about the impact of cloud computing over individual users. In this paper we focus on how to provide personalized services for individual users in the cloud environment. We argue that a personalized cloud service shall compose of two parts. The client side program records user activities on personal de-vices such as PC. Besides that, the user model is also computed on the client side to avoid server overhead. The cloud side program fetches the user model periodically and adjusts its results accordingly. We build a personalized cloud data search engine prototype to prove our idea.

Abstract:Current web search/metasearch engines are built to serve all users, independent of the special needs of any individual user in different situations. Personalization of web search is to carry out retrieval for each user incorporating his/her interests. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive personalized approach based on context to adapting search results according to each user's need in different situations for relevant information with little user effort. After the process of the context-based adaptive personalized search is analyzed, three key technologies to implement this process are presented in details, which are semantic indexing for web resources, modeling and acquiring user context and semantic similarity matching between web resources and user context. Experimental results indicate that the adaptive personalized search system is adopted by most of users and our approach to personalize web search is both effective.

Abstract:With the growing establishment of Internet infrastructure, more and more online services become available to end user, which in turn promotes the prosperity of the Internet. However, two issues emerge during this information increase. First, users have to access many individual sites to get their services, which consumes lots of time and contains some duplicate work. Second, user traces in different websites could have been used to provide more personalized services. Given these observations, this position paper proposes a recommendation-assisted personal web system based on existing work on personal web and recommendation systems. This system can integrate several web services to form a personal web, derive request-specific user data, and provide a personalized service by content based filtering and user intention inference. Using a research assistant application as a case study, we show how this framework helps to deliver personalized services.

Abstract:It is a challenge to recommend services according to users' interests when search systems return plenty of keyword-like services. We propose a personalised search approach for web service recommendation. First, interests are extracted from users' records. Second, interest-similar users are selected using the criterion of cosine distance. Third, services are ranked in decreasing order based on the recommendation from interest-similar users. At the end of this paper, we conduct three groups' experiments to verify the effect of this approach.

Abstract:Personalised search is a new kind of search pattern which gathers and predicts users' interests and then optimises the search results according to users' interest model.However,the interest model used by traditional personalised search is not precise enough and the dynamic modification strategies are not perfect enough as well and can not precisely reflect the variations of users' interests.To achieve a good solution on these problems,a personalised search mechanism is proposed,which takes two-dimension interest polygon as the interest model and is based on the local add-ons.The details of modelling the two-dimension interest polygon,the motivation and algorithm of dynamic modification strategies,the generation of web page's domain model and the similarity matching algorithm fitting the interest polygon are systematically described in the paper.Finally,an experiment is performed and it proves that the personalised search mechanism is capable of improving search quality.

Abstract:Since the accelerating pace of globalization of the world economy, the knowledge becomes the key to enhance the competitiveness of firms. This paper presents a new recommendation technical solution to this problem. Then the process model and the key technology are described in detail. Finally feasibility and practicability of the proposed technical solution were verified by the development and preliminary application of a prototype system.

Abstract:General information retrieval systems are designed to serve all users without considering individual needs. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to personalized search. It can, in a unified way, exploit and utilize implicit feedback information, such as query logs and immediately viewed documents. Moreover, our approach can implement result re-ranking and query expansion simultaneously and collaboratively. Based on this approach, we develop a client-side personalized web search agent PAIR (Personalized Assistant for Information Retrieval), which supports both English and Chinese. Our experiments on TREC and HTRDP collections clearly show that the new approach is both effective and efficient.

Abstract:In the past years we have witnessed an explosive growth of the data and information on the World Wide Web, which makes it difficult for normal users to find the information that they are interested in. On the other hand, the majority of the data and resources are very unpopular, which can be considered as "hidden information", and are very difficult tofind. By building a bridge between the users and the objects and constructing their similarities, the Personal Recommender System (PRS) can recommend the objects that the users are potentially interested in. PRS plays an important role in not only social and economic life but also scientific analysis. The interdisciplinary PRS attracts attention from the communities of information science, computational mathematics, statistical physics, management science, and consumer behaviors, etc. In fact, PRS is one of the most efficient tools to solve the i nformation over- load problem. According to the recommendation algorithms, we introduce four typical systems, including the collaborating filtering system, the content-based system, the structure-based system, and the hybrid system. In addition, some improved algorithms are proposed to overcome the limitations of traditional systems. This review article may shed some light on the study of PRS from different backgrounds.
Personalization of Search Results Using Interaction Behaviors in Search Sessions.

Abstract:Personalization of search results offers the potential for significant improvement in information retrieval performance. User interactions with the system and documents during information-seeking sessions provide a wealth of information about user preferences and their task goals. In this paper, we propose methods for analyzing and modeling user search behavior in search sessions to predict document usefulness and then using information to personalize search results. We generate prediction models of document usefulness from behavior data collected in a controlled lab experiment with 32 participants, each completing uncontrolled searching for 4 tasks in the Web. The generated models are then tested with another data set of user search sessions in radically different search tasks and constrains. The documents predicted useful and not useful by the models are used to modify the queries in each search session using a standard relevance feedback technique. The results show that application of the models led to consistently improved performance over a baseline that did not take account of user interaction information. These findings have implications for designing systems for personalized search and improving user search experience.

Abstract:Web search is an integral part of our daily lives. Recently, there has been a trend of personalization in Web search, where different users receive different results for the same search query. The increasing level of personalization is leading to concerns about Filter Bubble effects, where certain users are simply unable to access information that the search engines' algorithm decides is irrelevant. Despite these concerns, there has been little quantification of the extent of personalization in Web search today, or the user attributes that cause it. In light of this situation, we make three contributions. First, we develop a methodology for measuring personalization in Web search results. While conceptually simple, there are numerous details that our methodology must handle in order to accurately attribute differences in search results to personalization. Second, we apply our methodology to 200 users on Google Web Search and 100 users on Bing. We find that, on average, 11.7% of results show differences due to personalization on Google, while 15.8% of results are personalized on Bing, but that this varies widely by search query and by result ranking. Third, we investigate the user features used to personalize on Google Web Search and Bing. Surprisingly, we only find measurable personalization as a result of searching with a logged in account and the IP address of the searching user. Our results are a first step towards understanding the extent and effects of personalization on Web search engines today.

Desktop Data Driven Approach to Personalize Query Recommendation.

Abstract:Query recommendation is an effective method to help users describe their search intentions. In a personalized system, cold-start and the data sparsity were unavoidable, which directly lead to deficient performance of personalizing. As a significant part of a user's personal information space, a personal computer owns lots of documents relevant to his or her interest. Therefore, desktop data was introduced to construct a user's preference model. Furthermore, considering the variety of desktop data, relationship between search task and work task was simultaneously exploited to predict a user's specific information need. Ten volunteers joined experiments to evaluate the potential of desktop data. A series of experiments were conducted and the results proved that desktop data greatly contributed to providing effective personalized reference words. Besides, the results demonstrated that a user's long-term interest model performed steadier than work task context, but the most valuable words were the top-3 words extracted from the work context.
