Abstract:Post adoptive IT use is an important research topic in information systems field, mainly including sustained behaviours and switching behaviours. While there are a great number of studies on users’ continuance intentions for diversified IT, users’ IT switching behaviours are less studied. This research attempts to identify the features of users IT switching behaviours. We introduce a migration theory from social network perspective to explore the intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing users’ switching intention in the context of mobile instant messaging (MIM) application. In particular, we develop a model that examines the role of networks, deprivations and trusts on MIM users’ switching intentions to WeChat in China. A survey research method is utilized to test this model and hypotheses. We found that functional deprivation, monetary deprivation and personal innovativeness could positively influence users’ switching intentions. Networks of obligation was found to have no significantly direct influence on switching intentions, but fully mediated by functional and monetary deprivations. However, trust transferred from MIMs provider has no significant effect on switching intentions. The findings are believed to theoretically contribute to further understand users’ IT switching behaviours and yield some practical implications for designers and managers in MIM providers and their products propaganda.
Understanding Post Adoption Switching Behavior for Mobile Instant Messaging Application in China: Based on Migration Theory.

Abstract:Post adoptive IT use is a hot research stream in information systems field, including continuance behaviours and switching behaviours. While there are a great number of studies on users’ intentions or behaviors for diversified information systems, previous post adoptive IT studies pay relatively less attention on users’ switching behaviors. Hence, we know little about this phenomenon and triggers on users’ switching behaviors. This research identifies the features of users IT switching behaviors and examines what trigger their switching intentions and actual behaviors in the context of mobile instant messaging (MIM) application in China. A model of MIM switching behaviors is developed based on Curran and Saguy’s (2001) research on how networks of obligation, trust and relative deprivation affect human’s migration decision and process. Besides these three triggers, we also introduce dissatisfaction and curiosity into our model according to prior IS studies on switching behaviors. A survey research method will be adopted to test this model. Overall, our study may theoretically contribute to further understand users’ IT switching behaviors and yield some practical implications for designers and managers in MIM providers and their products propaganda.

Abstract:PurposeThis research aims to investigate the influence of consumers' anticipated trust in service providers on brand switching intention and its underlying psychological mechanism. More importantly, this study explores the moderating role of type of service providers (human staff/humanoid robots/nonhumanoid robots).Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted two single-factor between-subjects experimental designs and tested the hypotheses in two typical service failure scenarios: Study 1, a hotel scenario (N = 403); and Study 2, a restaurant scenario (N = 323).FindingsThe results suggest that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between consumers' anticipated trust and tolerance of service failure and that such tolerance has a mediating effect on the relationship between anticipated trust and brand switching intention. Moreover, when service failure is caused by a humanoid service robot, a moderate anticipated trust level of consumers is most conducive to increasing tolerance, which in turn reduces their propensity to switch brands.Originality/valueThis study examines the nature of the relationship between anticipated trust and tolerance in a service failure context, revealing an inverted U-shaped relationship. More importantly, the boundary conditions under which different service provides have an influence on this relationship are incorporated. Finally, this study explores the influence of service failure tolerance on brand switching intentions in a technological context, enriching consumer-brand relationship research.

Abstract:As more and more users choose the digital library rather than traditional library, the studies on the factors influencing switching behavior also become valuable. This paper analyzes the causes of users switching by laddering technique based on user interviews. The results show that related factors, such as school roll, perceived convenience, alternative resources, scientific perceived utility, offline using habit, external environment factors and switching cost, are significant factors of switching. Then a framework model of library college user switching behavior is built from the perspectives of PPM, in which corresponding assumptions are proposed.

Abstract:With the rapid development of cloud storage, it is necessary to determine the mechanism of cloud storage adoption. Based on social exchange theory, technology acceptance model and perceived risk theory, this study attempts to explore the switching factors and to empirically examine the relationship between those and users’ intention to switch to cloud storage services. This study quantitatively analyzes the data to obtain the significance level of each variable and a model of the influence mechanism of cloud storage switching intention is obtained. Our main results suggest that perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness have a significantly positive impact on related benefits. Information loss risk and time risk have a significantly positive impact on related costs while information leakage risk does not influence significantly. Related benefits have a significant positive impact on switching intention while related costs have a significantly negative impact on it.

Abstract:This study proposed a comprehensive model based on Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT) and switching costs theory, which theorized and verified how the dimensions of innovation attributes and switching costs of the smart home affect the switching intention of potential smart home users and captured both positive and negative factors that affect switching intention. To empirically test the switching intention of potential smart home users, this study conducted an online survey on 407 potential smart home users and analyzed the data using Partial least squares (PLS). The results showed that relative advantage and compatibility have significant negative effects on procedural switching costs, but complexity has no statistical significance on procedural switching costs. Complexity has a significant positive impact on financial switching costs, while compatibility has a significant negative impact on financial switching costs. Both the innovation attributes and the switching costs perceived by potential users have significant positive or negative effects on the switching intention, which validated our hypotheses. In addition, in terms of the results from testing of mediation effects, except for procedural switching costs, which do not have a mediating role between complexity and switching intention, all others play a significant mediating role.

Abstract:In the research of technology switch, theories such as Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM), Behavioral Reasoning (BRT), Innovation Resistance (IRT), and Status Quo Bias (SQB) have been employed to extend the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), focusing on how old technology factors such as inertia as barriers to embracing new technological innovations. However, our research contends that the impact of these old technology factors on the technology switch is not unequivocal, as they may either hinder or facilitate the transition, depending on whether the new technology retains valued features of the old technology. To delve into this complexity, we introduce the concept of value resonance between old and new technologies. Utilizing Nintendo Switch for empirical analysis, two quantitative studies were conducted. Out of 630 distributed questionnaires, 553 valid responses were collected, yielding an 87.7% response rate. The first study used multi-groups analysis within TAM to differentiate between the technology acceptance group (TAG) and the technology switch group (TSG), contributing to the development of the Technology Switch Model (TSM). The second study applied Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modeling (CB-SEM) to examine value resonance's mediating role in the TSM. The empirical results revealed discernible differences between TAG and TSG within the TAM framework, providing a robust theoretical basis for the TSM. Furthermore, the result indicated that factors associated with old technology could enhance users' switching intentions through the mediating mechanism of value resonance. These findings aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of technology switch, highlighting that the dynamics between old and new technologies are more complex and variable than previously assumed.

Abstract:Intermittent discontinuance acts as a precursor to user loss and has become a crucial and challenging issue in the operation and management of social media. From the perspective of alternative competition, we integrate the push–pull–mooring framework and expectancy violation theory to explore how contradictory psychology occurs and impacts users’ intermittent discontinuance of strong-ties social functions (STSF). According to results obtained from partial least squares-structural equation modeling, both push (information overload, system feature overload, and usage fatigue) and pull (privacy concerns) factors cause intermittent discontinuance, while mooring factors (sunk costs, transition costs, and transition fatigue) reduce it. Transition fatigue mediates the relationship between transition costs and intermittent discontinuance. From the perspective of competitors, while alternative attractions do not significantly affect users’ intermittent discontinuance, transition costs and fatigue do exert a significant negative impact on it. The fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis results reveal that technology overload, usage fatigue, privacy concerns, and sunk costs are core antecedents of high-degree intermittent discontinuance. These results are expected to provide a reference for reducing the intermittent discontinuance of platforms and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of users.

Abstract:Despite the increasing popularity of social networking websites, very little is known about users’ extrinsic and intrinsic motivations that influence their continued use of these websites. The long-term development of social networking websites depends on their users’ continuance of use. To examine the extrinsic and intrinsic motivations, this study integrates the technology acceptance model, the theory of planned behavior, the expectation disconfirmation model, and flow theory to construct a research model which investigates the factors that motivate users to continue to use social networking websites. The research model was tested empirically within the context of Facebook and 482 samples of data were analyzed using a structural equation modeling approach. The analysis showed that the proposed theoretical model provided a deep understanding of user continuance behavior towards social networking websites. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.

However, the complexity of user experience research is due to the dynamically changing factors of user and environment. The user expectation is not only affected by social communication and media, but also formed by his\her previous experience of similar products. To study user experience in the temporal dimension, we must consider the dynamic nature of user expectation and take the interaction between user expectation and user experience into account.In this study, we first discuss the definition of user expectation, and then explore how the previous user experiences to existing products influence the present user expectation, and thereby affect the successive user experience on a new design.

Abstract:The Technology Acceptance Model and two variations of the Theory of Planned Behavior were compared to assess which model best helps to understand usage of information technology. The models were compared using student data collected from 786 potential users of a computer resource center. Behavior data was based on monitoring 3,780 visits to the resource center over a 12-week period. Weighted least squares estimation revealed that all three models performed well in terms of fit and were roughly equivalent in terms of their ability to explain behavior. Decomposing the belief structures in the Theory of Planned Behavior provided a moderate increase in the explanation of behavioral intention. Overall, the results indicate that the decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior provides a fuller understanding of behavioral intention by focusing on the factors that are likely to influence systems use through the application of both design and implementation strategies.

Abstract:The recent failure of major PC and smartphone makers in launching new generations of high-tech products in time shows that analyzing and capturing the timing of technology disruption is an important yet less explored research area. This paper conducts theoretical and empirical analyses for ex-ante quantitative evaluation of the timing of technology disruption. We conceptualize the ease and network factors as key determinants of performance improvement for a disruptive technology. A dynamic consumer model is developed to identify two critical times, termed D-Day and V-Day, of technology disruption. We also show that, if the network factor dominates the performance improvement process, there may exist some "bleak days" during which a firm would discontinue a "promising" technology that will eventually disrupt. Empirical tests are conducted with data of hard disk drives, semiconductor technologies, and CPU performance for mobile devices to verify key model assumptions and to show how to estimate the ease and network factors. We also perform a numerical experiment to demonstrate how to forecast the timing of technology disruption. A decision tree and a systematic framework are also developed to operationalize key model parameters and analytical results from a decision-support perspective. This paper contributes to the literature by presenting a novel analytical tool and new insights for high-tech companies to forecast and manage the timing of technology disruption. Abstract:The study's prime objective is to investigate the user discontinuance intention in the shed of the negative disconfirmation of user expectation. The study has derived the theoretical structure from the expectancy disconfirmation theory (EDT) enacted through the stimuli organism response (SOR) framework to study the actual cause and effect relationship of human behavioral response. To investigate the user discontinuance intention behavioral response, a total of 434 correct and complete answers were shortlisted for analysis. To examine the data set, the study has used the modern partial least square method technique or simply SmartPLS service package to run the structural equation modeling (SEM). Moreover, the study has implied the 80/20 rule run the mediating analysis of the SOR framework. The statistical results show that all three stimuli make significant positive disconfirmation of the user beliefs in terms of dissatisfaction and the anxiety that ultimately leads to the discontinuance intention in virtual network users. Further, these results are validated through the six mediating relationships, which partially mediate the relationship between the stimuli and response. Besides all these findings, this study has made some practical and realistic theoretical and practical implications for both researchers and service-providing managers.

Abstract:This study aims to address a research gap related to the outcomes of the use of technology when the performance falls short of initial expectations, and the coping mechanisms that users may deploy in such circumstances. By adopting Cognitive Dissonance Theory, the objectives of the study are a) to examine how dissonance, caused by the negative disconfirmation of expectations, may translate into a positive outcome and b) study how negative emotions, such as anger, guilt and regret, determine the selection of the mechanism to reduce dissonance. The theorised model was tested using a cross-sectional research design and a sample of 387 smart home users. The focus on smart home users fitted the objectives of the study due to the high expectations that users form and the challenges that the utilisation of technology sometimes causes. The collected data was analysed using structural equation modelling. Findings indicate that post-disconfirmation dissonance induces feelings of anger, guilt and regret, correlating with dissonance reduction mechanisms, which in turn have a distinctive effect on satisfaction and wellbeing. The findings of the study contribute to the discussion on expectation-disconfirmation and cognitive dissonance, by illustrating the interrelationship between emotional, cognitive and behavioural factors following the evaluation of technology performance and confirming that negative disconfirmation may result in satisfaction.

Abstract:Users of rival technology platforms, such as Android-versus-iOS, often harbor hostile opposition to each other. The dominant perspective of technology resistance, conceptualized as technology inertia, cannot explain such strong oppositional behavior. We propose a threat to tech self-esteem construct that captures distinct threat perceptions and offers a unified explanation for oppositional intentions. We conducted an empirical study of smartphone users, where we find that the threat to technology self-esteem arises from distinct antecedents and offers a singular explanation for opposition. Moreover, we show the unintended consequences of employing lock-in strategies and provide advice on why and how to mitigate them.

In this paper, we attempt to further clarify the concept and emphasize its important role in guidance in practices through reviewing relevant literatures published in SSCI journals. Furthermore, we propose a multilevel theoretical framework to examine the influence factors of disruptive innovation by integrating various research results. Abstract:Blog has been one of the social technologies that greatly change many online users' daily lives. Bloggers not only can publish personal dairies on it, but also can develop relationships with other bloggers or blog visitors. Although many blog services are provided freely, its service switching behavior have attracted much attention from practitioners. Blog service switching is a specific instance of the broader social technology switching phenomenon. It differs from general usage behavior as it involves both membership attraction and retention. Thus, prior research on information technology usage may not fully account for the phenomenon. In this study, we adopt a theory of planned behavior perspective and build up a switching model to explain blog service switching behavior. We employ a survey to explain how two quality beliefs (service quality and quality of alternatives) and two types of costs (sunk costs and relationship costs) exert influence in determining bloggers' switching behavior. Discussions and implications are provided to better understand the switching behavior of blog and other social technologies.

Abstract:Information systems (IS) cannot be effective unless they are used. However, people sometimes do not use systems that could potentially increase their performance. This study compares two models that predict an individual's intention to use an IS: the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The comparison was designed to be as fair as possible, not favoring one model over the other. Both TAM and TPB predicted intention to use an IS quite well, with TAM having a slight empirical advantage. TAM is easier to apply, but only supplies very general information on users' opinions about a system. TPB provides more specific information that can better guide development.
