Abstract:In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the joint optimal transceiver design for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems. In this paper, we propose a joint transceiver design that combines the geometric mean decomposition (GMD) with either the conventional zero-forcing VBLAST decoder or the more recent zero-forcing dirty paper precoder (ZFDP). Our scheme decomposes a MIMO channel into multiple identical parallel subchannels, which can make it rather convenient to design modulation/demodulation and coding/decoding schemes. Moreover, we prove that our scheme is asymptotically optimal for (moderately) high SNR in terms of both channel throughput and bit error rate (BER) performance. This desirable property is not shared by any other conventional schemes. We also consider the subchannel selection issues when some of the subchannels are too poor to be useful. Our scheme can also be combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for intersymbol interference (ISI) suppression. The effectiveness of our approaches has been validated by both theoretical analyses and numerical simulations.

Abstract:Assuming that the channel state information is available at both transmitter (CSIT) and receiver (CSIR), we propose a novel multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transceiver design that combines the generalized triangular decomposition (GTD) with either the zero-forcing VBLAST (ZF-VBLAST) detector or the zero-forcing dirty paper precoder (ZF-DP). Our approach decomposes a MIMO channel into multiple subchannels with prescribed signal-to-interference-and-noise ratios (SINR), useful in MIMO communications with QoS constraints. We show that the GTD scheme is asymptotically (for high SNR) optimal in terms of overall channel throughput for a large range of QoS constraints. The numerical experiment verifies that the GTD scheme is much more power efficient than its linear counterpart.

Abstract:The integration of both sensing and communication functions is a crucial feature for future communication systems. This paper considers a novel scenario where a radar covers multiple small-cell base stations (BSs) which operate in different spectra. We propose a co-existence system of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar and multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication systems. We aim to minimize the system transmit power while maintaining the performance of both radar and communication. Due to the complexity of the original problem, we traverse the BS selection and transform the subproblem into a more tractable one by introducing auxiliary variables and propose a penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based algorithm to solve it. In the inner loop, we propose a concave-convex procedure (CCCP)-based algorithm to deal with the optimization problem, and the block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is utilized to update the variables. In the outer loop, we update the penalty term or Lagrange multipliers. Finally, numerical simulations validate the superiority of our proposed algorithm over benchmark algorithms.

Abstract:This paper considers the design of transmitters and receivers in the downlink of multiuser MIMO systems. Unlike conventional methods, our optimization problem is under the constraint of total transmit power for all users which enables dynamic power allocation. To reduce the complexity of iterative algorithm, optimum receivers are first derived as function of transmitters. Specifically, optimum receivers are considered under minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria and individual zero-forcing (IZF) constraint. The close-form solution of optimum transmitter is further derived based on these two categories of receivers. In addition, we show the structure of optimum transceiver and reveal the relation between different measures of quality, namely, MSE and SINR. Both analysis and simulation results have shown the superiority of the proposed method both in terms of complexity and performance. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference networks. In this system, each transmitter sends one data stream to its targeted receiver through beamforming, while each receiver divides the received signal into two signal flows via power splitting (PS), for information decoding (ID) and energy harvesting (EH), respectively. Different from the existing work in [1], each receiver is equipped with multiple receive antennas, and leverages a receive filter to recover information symbols. Our objective is thus to minimize the total transmit power of all transmitters by jointly designing beamformers, power splitters and receive filters, subject to the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint for ID and the harvested power constraint for EH at each receiver. To solve this non-convex joint transceiver design problem, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm is proposed via iteratively solving its two convex sub-problems. We prove that the first subproblem relaxed by semidefinite relaxation (SDR) always has a rank-one solution, which indicates the relaxation is actually tight. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can save more total transmit power than the existing scheme [1], and its convergence speed is also desirable.

Compared to the algorithm which can achieve the same performance, it has a lower computational complexity.

Abstract:Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging cost-efficient technology to enhance communication performance by implementing a large number of passive reflecting elements with tunable phases in wireless systems. In this paper, we propose a general framework for the IRS-aided MIMO system designs under both single-user and multi-user setups, in which the diverse performance metrics including weighted mutual information and weighted MSE, and the realistic multiple weighted power constraint are taken into consideration. Leveraging the alternating optimization approach, the optimal IRS phase shifts are obtained in semi-closed forms. Specifically, based on the matrix-monotonic optimization theory, it is found that optimizing IRS phase shifts is essentially equivalent to tuning the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the MSE matrix. Then the proposed general framework is extended to a multi-user system by introducing a majorization-minimization (MM)-based method for IRS phase shift optimization. Simulation results show that our proposed optimal design brings significant enhancement on the chosen performance metric compared to the traditional MIMO systems without the IRS, and also significantly outperforms various benchmark designs in both single-user and multi-user systems.

Abstract:This paper addresses the transceiver design problem for secure downlink communications over a multiple-input multiple-output ( MIMO) relay system in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. A new algorithm based on alternating optimization (AO) is first proposed to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a legitimate receiver under power constraints at the base station (BS) and the relay station (RS) and a set of secrecy constraints, by using the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. To reduce complexity, a simplified design algorithm based on switched relaying (SR) is also proposed, in which both the BS and the RS are equipped with a codebook of permutation matrices. Based on this codebook, we construct a number of latent transceivers, each consisting of a BS beamforming vector and an optimally scaled RS permutation matrix. We use the bisection search and second-order cone programming (SOCP) techniques to design each latent transceiver and choose the optimal one with the largest SNR. We also develop an efficient approach to construct the codebook of permutation matrices. Our results show that the SR based algorithm significantly reduces the computational complexity while maintaining a similar performance to the AO based algorithm.(1)

Abstract:Multi-hop communications are becoming more and more important due to its flexibility and potential to improve communication coverage and quality. In this paper, we discuss the robust transceiver optimization for multi-hop amplify-and-forward multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In general, we consider a three-dimensional robust beamforming design, i.e., frequency, spatial and relay domains. With inevitable channel estimation errors, in our work both weighted mean square error (MSE) minimization and minimizing maximum MSE are adopted as the performance metrics to design robust transceivers. Following the Bayesian robust philosophy, a robust transceiver design is proposed. The design is based on convex optimization, and the involved optimization variables are optimized alternatively. The proposed transceiver optimization algorithms can be applied to the network with arbitrary hops, arbitrary antennas and arbitrary subcarriers. At the end of this paper, the performance advantages of the propose design have been assessed by the numerical results.

Abstract:Assuming the availability of the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) and receiver (CSIR), we consider the joint optimal transceiver design for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems. Using our recently developed generalized triangular decomposition (GTD), we propose a scheme, which we refer to as adaptable channel decomposition (ACD), to decompose a MIMO channel into multiple subchannels with prescribed capacities, or equivalently, signal-to-interference-and-noise ratios (SINR). We also determine the subchannel capacity region such that the channel decomposition is capacity lossless. This scheme is particularly relevant to the applications where independent data streams with different quality-of-services (QoS) share the same MIMO channel.

Abstract:The joint design of hybrid beamforming matrices is conceived for multiuser mm-wave full-duplex (FD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay-aided systems in the presence of realistic channel state information (CSI) errors. Specifically, considering a probabilistic CSI error model, we maximize the system’s worst-case sum rate by jointly optimizing the base station’s (BS’s) analog and digital beamforming matrices, plus the analog receive and transmit beamforming matrices of the relay station (RS) as well as its digital amplify-and-forward beamforming matrix under practical constraints. Explicitly, the transmit power constraints of the BS and RS, the residual self-interference power constraint of the RS, the per-user quality of service constraints, and the unit-modulus constraints on the analog beamforming matrix elements are all taken into account. Since the resultant optimization problem is very challenging due to its highly nonlinear objective function and nonconvex coupling constraints, we first transform it into a more tractable form. We then develop a novel joint optimization algorithm based on the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) technique to solve the resultant problem. The proposed PDD-based algorithm performs double-loop iterations: the inner loop updates the optimization variables in a block coordinate descent fashion, while the outer loop adjusts the Lagrange multipliers and penalty parameter, hence ensuring convergence to the set of stationary solutions of the original problem. Our simulations show that the mm-wave FD hybrid MIMO relay systems relying on our new algorithm significantly outperform both their non-robust FD and conventional half-duplex counterparts.

Abstract:This paper proposes a joint transmitter-receiver design to minimize the weighted sum power under the post-processing signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (post-SINR) constraints for all subchannels. Simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm can not only satisfy the post-SINR constraints but also easily adjust the power distribution among the users by changing the weights accordingly. Hence the algorithm can be used to alleviates the adjacent cell interference by reducing the transmitting power to the edge users without performance penalty.

Abstract:In this letter, we address the problem of designing jointly the linear transmitter and receiver for the downlink of Multiuser MIMO system, using minimum total mean square error criterion (T-MMSE), subject to a total transmit power constraint. We show that transmitter and receiver under such criterion could be realized through a joint iterative algorithm. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is proved. Simulation results have also been provided to demonstrate the feasibility of this new method.

Abstract:This paper addresses joint transceiver design for secure downlink communications over a multiple-input multiple-output relay system in the presence of multiple legitimate users and malicious eavesdroppers. Specifically, we jointly optimize the base station (BS) beamforming matrix, the relay station (RS) amplify-and-forward transformation matrix, and the covariance matrix of artificial noise, so as to maximize the system worst-case secrecy rate in the presence of the colluding eavesdroppers under power constraints at the BS and the RS, as well as quality of service constraints for the legitimate users. This problem is very challenging due to the highly coupled design variables in the objective function and constraints. By adopting a series of transformation, we first derive an equivalent problem that is more tractable than the original one. Then, we propose and fully develop a novel algorithm based on the penalty concave-convex procedure (penalty-CCCP) to solve the equivalent problem, where the difficult coupled constraint is penalized into the objective and the resulting nonconvex problem is solved at each iteration by resorting to the CCCP method. It is shown that the proposed joint transceiver design algorithm converges to a stationary solution of the original problem. Finally, our simulation results reveal that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance than other recently proposed transceiver designs.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a transmit precoder design for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) decode-and-forward (DF) half-duplex two-hop relaying system consisting of one transmitter, one relay, one information-decoding (ID) receiver, and one energy harvesting (EH) receiver, where all nodes are equipped with more than one antenna. Our objective is to maximize data rates of this system by designing precoders at source and relay. We can jointly optimalize two precoding matrices using some numerical methods such as CVX after transforming the original problem into a convex problem. Moreover, we also use a suboptimal method to reduce computation complexity of the precoder design. Numerical results show that we achieved comparable data rate to the optimal precoding even when the coefficients for linear combining are restricted to real numbers.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of joint transceiver design for Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding (THP) in the multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink. Different from previous work, we perform stream-wise (both inter-user and intra-user) interference pre-cancelation at the transmitter. A minimum total mean square error (MT-MSE) criterion is used to formulate our optimization problem. By some convex analysis of the problem, we obtain the necessary conditions for the optimal solution. Then an iterative algorithm is proposed to handle this problem and its convergence is proved. Simulation results are given to verify the efficacy of our proposed scheme and to show its superiority over existing THP-relevant schemes.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a unified framework for IRS-aided transceiver designs under general power constraints in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems which implement interference (pre-)subtraction via Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) or Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE) technologies. Armed with majorization theory, two fundamental classes of performance criteria, namely $K$-increasing Schur-concave and Schur-convex functions of the logarithm of Mean Square Error (MSE) of the data stream, are investigated in depth. Firstly, we propose a simplified counterpart of the optimal transceiver design under general power constraints, with equivalence guaranteed by Pareto optimization theory and Lagrange duality. Moreover, the optimal semi-closed form solution to this simplified transceiver design can be attained using the modified subgradient method. Next, we prove that for any Schur-concave objective, the optimal nonlinear THP (DFE) design is in essence the linear precoding (equalization). For any Schur-convex objective, the optimal transceiver design results in individual data streams with equal MSEs, and thereby reduces to the Gaussian mutual information maximization based design. Based on the above conclusions, we further propose an efficient alternating optimization algorithm to decouple the optimization of the transmit precoder and the IRS reflection coefficients, where the classical successive convex approximation (SCA) technique is applied to fight against non-convex subproblems. From the low computational complexity perspective, a two-stage scheme is also developed inspired by the capability of the IRS in constructing favorable wireless links. Finally, numerical results show the global optimality of the modified subgradient method and the excellent performance of the proposed alternating optimization algorithm and two-stage scheme.

Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels provide an abstract and unified representation of different physical communication systems, ranging from multi-antenna wireless channels to wireless digital subscriber line systems. They have the key property that several data streams can be simultaneously established.In general, the design of communication systems for MIMO channels is quite involved (if one can assume the use of sufficiently long and good codes, then the problem formulation simplifies drastically). The first difficulty lies on how to measure the global performance of such systems given the tradeoff on the performance among the different data streams. Once the problem formulation is defined, the resulting mathematical problem is typically too complicated to be optimally solved as it is a matrix-valued nonconvex optimization problem. This design problem has been studied for the past three decades (the first papers dating back to the 1970s) motivated initially by cable systems and more recently by wireless multi-antenna systems. The approach was to choose a specific global measure of performance and then to design the system accordingly, either optimally or suboptimally, depending on the difficulty of the problem.This text presents an up-to-date unified mathematical framework for the design of point-to-point MIMO transceivers with channel state information at both sides of the link according to an arbitrary cost function as a measure of the system performance. In addition, the framework embraces the design of systems with given individual performance on the data streams.Majorization theory is the underlying mathematical theory on which the framework hinges. It allows the transformation of the originally complicated matrix-valued nonconvex problem into a simple scalar problem. In particular, the additive majorization relation plays a key role in the design of linear MIMO transceivers (i.e., a linear precoder at the transmitter and a linear equalizer at the receiver), whereas the multiplicative majorization relation is the basis for nonlinear decision-feedback MIMO transceivers (i.e., a linear precoder at the transmitter and a decision-feedback equalizer at the receiver).
A Unified Joint Optimization of Training Sequences and Transceivers Based on Matrix-Monotonic Optimization

Abstract:Channel estimation and data transmission constitute the most fundamental functional modules of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. The underlying key tasks corresponding to these modules are training sequence optimization and transceiver optimization. Hence, we jointly optimize the linear transmit precoder and the training sequence of MIMO systems using the metrics of their effective mutual information (MI), effective mean squared error (MSE), effective weighted MI, effective weighted MSE, as well as their effective generic Schur-convex and Schur-concave functions. Both statistical channel state information (CSI) and estimated CSI are considered at the transmitter in the joint optimization. A unified framework termed as joint matrix-monotonic optimization is proposed. Based on this, the optimal precoder matrix and training matrix structures can be derived for both CSI scenarios. Then, based on the optimal matrix structures, our linear transceivers and their training sequences can be jointly optimized. Compared to state-of-the-art benchmark algorithms, the proposed algorithms visualize the bold explicit relationships between the attainable system performance of our linear transceivers conceived and their training sequences, leading to implementation ready recipes. Finally, several numerical results are provided, which corroborate our theoretical results and demonstrate the compelling benefits of our proposed pilot-aided MIMO solutions.
