Abstract:The design of safety-critical cyber-physical systems (CPSs) involve several dimensions, including physics, hardware rchitecture and software functionality. It is desirable to design CPSs by taking these issues into account uniformly and yet, few existing design workflows support this aim. For instance, AADL is an architecturecentric modelling formalism for CPSs, which focuses on modelling architecture and prototyping real-time hardware platforms, but it delegates physical and software behavioral models to so-called annexes. By contrast, Simulink/Stateflow (S/S) focuses on modelling interacting physical and software behaviors, but does not render the non-functional characteristics of their hardware platforms. To address this issue, in [1], we proposed the combination of AADL and S/S, called AADL S/S, to comodel CPSs and presented a method to uniformly analyse and verify them. AADL S/S provides a unified graphical co-modelling environment for CPS design and supports simulation through C code generation. Also, [1] presented a formal semantics of AADL S/S by translation to Hybrid Communicating Sequential Processes (HCSP), yielding a deductive verification framework of the combined models using Hybrid Hoare Logic (HHL). Additionally, [1] proved the correctness of the translation of AADL S/S to HCSP.
Optimal Coupling Pattern of Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract:In the modern society, physical infrastructure and information technology are inseparable. The concept of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) is then proposed and has been widely concerned by researchers in recent years. Various models have been introduced to meet the actual needs. In one type of those models, the physical part and the cyber part are coupled and influence each other. The cyber part monitors and controls the physical part, but at the same time it may also bring certain harm; the fault in one part may also be transmitted to the other and affect the performance of the counterpart. Here, this paper introduces an asymmetric interdependent model and studies how the coupling pattern of CPSs affects the system robustness. In addition, the coupling pattern of CPSs is optimized by using the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to reduce the performance loss. The results of this paper may find applications in the future CPS planning.

Abstract:Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are integrations of information technology and physical systems, which are more and more significant in society. As a typical example of CPSs, smart grids integrate many advanced devices and information technologies to form a safer and more efficient power system. However, interconnection with the cyber network makes the system more complex, so that the robustness assessment of CPSs becomes more difficult. This paper proposes a new CPS model from a complex network perspective. We try to consider the real dynamics of cyber and physical parts and the asymmetric interdependency between them. Simulation results show that coupling with the communication network makes better robustness of power system. But since the influences between the power and communication networks are asymmetric, the system parameters play an important role to determine the robustness of the whole system.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information technology, traditional infrastructure networks have evolved into cyber physical systems (CPSs). However, this evolution has brought along with it cyber failures, in addition to physical failures, which can affect the safe and stable operation of the whole system. In light of this, in this paper, we propose an interdependence-constrained optimization model to improve the robustness of the cyber physical system. The proposed model includes not only the realistic physical law but also the interdependence between the physical network and the cyber network. However, this model is highly nonlinear and cannot be solved directly. Therefore, we transform the model into a bi-level mixed integer linear programming problem, which can be easily and effectively solved in polynomial time. We conduct the simulation based on standard Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers test cases and study the impact of the disaster level and coupling strength on the robustness of the whole system. The simulation results show that our proposed model can effectively improve the robustness of the cyber physical system. Moreover, we compare the performance of the power supply in different CPSs, which have different network structures of the cyber network. Our work can provide useful instructions for system operators to improve the robustness of CPSs after extreme events happen in them.

Abstract:By combining communication, computation, and control (3C), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)0tightly couple the physical world with the cyber-world, to enable more applications, enhance performance, increase dependability and etc. Among these goals, as CPS are widely used in the safety-critical area, guaranteeing the basic dependability/safety is after all the prerequisite and often the top concern. However, the behavior of CPS is extremely complex. First of all, due to the existence of both discrete control modes transition and continuous real-time behavior in CPS, the behavior of CPS is a complex hybrid state space, which is difficult to understand and handle. Secondly, most CPS applications are working in the open environment and acquiring real-time data from the environment intensively to adjust their own behavior. The dynamic environment makes the behavior space more complex to reason. When a system is too complex to analyze directly, building an abstract model of the system and then conducting analysis on the model to answer questions about the original system is an important and widely-used method. Meanwhile, a reasonable model also plays important roles in the phase of specification, design, development, testing, monitoring and so on. Therefore, it is an important topic of investigating how model-based methods can be applied in the context of CPS to increase the quality and dependability of the system. During the past decade, our research group at Nanjing University has devoted a lot of efforts into this mission. We conducted comprehensive research in a wide spectrum of CPS including model-driven design, verification, control, monitoring, and testing. In this paper, we will make a general review of the progress we made on these directions recently.

Abstract:Model-driven methods are widely used in embedded control software development. Current design tools, such as Ptolemy-II and Simulink, have strong modeling capability but their simulation and code generation functionalities are challenged by the increasing complexity of control requirements. For simulation, emulating the triggering of the actor leads to additional time overhead and speed degradation. For code generation, generating redundant content degrades the code quality. Besides, current tools do not have a unified interface, which makes it difficult to cooperation. In this article, we propose a unified model-driven design framework MDD to facilitate embedded control software development. MDD can support the unification of models built by different modeling tools for high-efficiency simulation and high-quality code generation. The MDD framework supports the expansion of more modeling tools, and also supports the expansion of more uses, such as unified testing and verification. First, it offers a model intermediate representation (MIR) and several corresponding parsers, which facilitate a unified representation and cooperation for different design tools. Then, based on data flow schedule analysis of the original MIR, intermediate code representation will be generated for optimized code synthesis. Finally, a variety of code translators will synthesize the intermediate code representation into the code of actual use, such as code for simulation and code for deployment. For evaluation, we enhance two widely used design tools in industry, Ptolemy-II and Simulink, and apply them on the implementation of several benchmark models and a real-world self-driving control software of our industrial collaborator. Using MDD can help reduce their simulation time by 98.9% and 92.6%, the generated code by 99.7% and 69.9% in the number of lines, and 94.3% and 34.3% in code execution time, respectively.

Abstract:A cyber-physical system (CPS) is a system featuring a tight combination of, and coordination between the system's computational and physical elements. Although much research has addressed modeling and simulation of such systems, most solutions usually do not cover all requirements from different domains. Rather, these solutions restrict the development environment and reduce its flexibility by enforcing the use of a specific software platform and tightly-coupled tools. This paper presents problems and challenges of CPS and discusses a MDA based Modeling & Simulation framework, which has a loosely coupled architecture, to enable design, modeling & simulation of large-scale, heterogeneous CPS systems in an integrated manner. Meta-model based Model Driven Architecture (MDA) is realized for dynamic reuse of simulation model across platforms in this paper at first. Then the paper introduces an Extended HLA architecture based on multi-layers and multi-federation and its implementation, which is realized based on Resource Management Federate (RMF) technique. Finally, Federate Integration Architecture (FIA) and its Federate Executive Infrastructure (FEI) are described, which are realized based on Web service and OGSI.

Abstract:As the complexity of the cyber-physical systems (CPSs) increase, system modeling and simulation tend to be performed on different platforms where collaborative modeling activities are performed on distributed clients, while the simulations of systems are carried out in specific simulation environments, such as high-performance computing (HPC). However, there is a great gap between system models usually designed in system modeling language (SysML) and simulation code, and the existing model transformation-based simulation methods and tools mainly focus on either discrete or continuous models, ignoring the fact that the simulation of hybrid models is quite important in designing complex systems. To this end, a model transformation approach is proposed to simulate hybrid SysML models under a discrete event system specification (DEVS) framework. In this approach, to depict hybrid models, simulation-related meta-models with discrete and continuous features are extracted from SysML views without additional extension. Following the meta object facility (MOF), DEVS meta-models are constructed based on the formal definition of DEVS models, including discrete, hybrid and coupled models. Moreover, a series of concrete mapping rules is defined to transform the discrete and continuous behaviors based on the existing state machine mechanism and constraints of SysML, separately. Such an approach may facilitate a SysML system engineer to use a DEVS-based simulator to validate system models without the necessity of understanding DEVS theory. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by a defense system case.

Abstract:Integrated with advanced information technologies, traditional power grids are evolving to Cyber Physical Power Sys-tems (CPPS). Accordingly, new simulation methods are demanded, which focuses on interactions between electrical network and in-formation network. In this paper, an event-driven simulation method for CPPS is proposed. To modeling cross-network interactions, changes of component statuses are taken as CPS events. Then, a virtual timeline is created to provide time coordination for synchronizing continuous time dynamics and discrete event dy-namics concerned. By updating and processing the event queue, the event-driven simulation of CPPS is conducted in an integrated simulation platform. Two illustrative cases are presented to demonstrate the proposed simulation method as well as validate its efficacy.

Abstract:The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is a standard, general-purpose, modeling language for model-based systems engineering (MBSE). SysML supports the specification, analysis, and design of a broad range of complex systems such as control systems. The authors demonstrate how they can integrate a SysML modeling tool (IBM Rational Rhapsody) with a proprietary simulation tool (MathWorks Simulink) and a Computer Algebra System (CAS) to validate system specification. The integration with Simulink enables users to perform systems engineering process in a SysML model, while designing continuous control algorithms and plant behavior in Simulink, and to validate the behavior by simulating the overall composition in Simulink. The integration with a CAS enables the evaluation of mathematical constraints defined in SysML parametric diagrams. The authors also show the overall approach using a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) and a Cruise Control System as examples.

Abstract:which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Abstract In system‐level design, it is difficult to achieve a system verification which fulfils the requirements of various stakeholders using only descriptive system models. Descriptive system models using SysML alone are insufficient for system behaviour verifications and engineers always use different simulation tools (e.g., the Mathworks Simulink or Modelica Dymola) to analyze systems behaviour. It is a good idea to combine descriptive and simulation models. This paper presents the development of a collaborative design framework which brings SysML, Simulink, and Simscape profiles within the domain of robotics. A conceptual design method is proposed to support execution models for simulation. In brief, the descriptive SysML system‐level model is interpreted into the system‐level simulation models (e.g., Simulink and Simscape). We then use a plugin‐based model integration technique to keep both models in sync for automatic simulation. A simulation study is performed to evaluate the system. To illustrate the design of this system, we present a simulated closed‐ loop system.

Abstract:The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) has been under development since 2001 by the International Council and the Object Management Group (OMG) organizations, as a standard modeling language for model-based systems engineering (MBSE). SysML supports the specification, analysis, design, and verification of a broad range of complex systems such as control systems. The authors describe a tool that integrates a Simulink model from relevant parts of a SysML model so users can perform systems engineering processes using SysML, and simulate parts of the model using Simulink. The authors also show systems engineering processes for designing a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) as an example of control systems.

From Stateflow Simulation to Verified Implementation: A Verification Approach and A Real-Time Train Controller Design

Abstract:Simulink is widely used for model driven development (MDD) of industrial software systems. Typically, the Simulink based development is initiated from Stateflow modeling, followed by simulation, validation and code generation mapped to physical execution platforms. However, recent industrial trends have raised the demands of rigorous verification on safety-critical applications, which is unfortunately challenging for Simulink. In this paper, we present an approach to bridge the Stateflow based model driven development and a well- defined rigorous verification. First, we develop a self- contained toolkit to translate Stateflow model into timed automata, where major advanced modeling features in Stateflow are supported. Taking advantage of the strong verification capability of Uppaal, we can not only find bugs in Stateflow models which are missed by Simulink Design Verifier, but also check more important temporal properties. Next, we customize a runtime verifier for the generated nonintrusive VHDL and C code of Stateflow model for monitoring. The major strength of the customization is the flexibility to collect and analyze runtime properties with a pure software monitor, which opens more opportunities for engineers to achieve high reliability of the target system compared with the traditional act that only relies on Simulink Polyspace. We incorporate these two parts into original Stateflow based MDD seamlessly. In this way, safety-critical properties are both verified at the model level, and at the consistent system implementation level with physical execution environment in consideration. We apply our approach on a train controller design, and the verified implementation is tested and deployed on a real hardware platform.
Automatic SDF-based Code Generation from Simulink Models for Embedded Software Development

Abstract:Matlab/Simulink is a wide-spread tool for model-based design of embedded systems. Supporting hierarchy, domain specific building blocks, functional simulation and automatic code-generation, makes it well-suited for the design of control and signal processing systems. In this work, we propose an automated translation methodology for a subset of Simulink models to Synchronous dataflow Graphs (SDFGs) including the automatic code-generation of SDF-compatible embedded code. A translation of Simulink models to SDFGs, is very suitable due to Simulink actor-oriented modeling nature, allowing the application of several optimization techniques from the SDFG domain. Because of their well-defined semantics, SDFGs can be analyzed at compiling phase to obtain deadlock-free and memory-efficient schedules. In addition, several real-time analysis methods exist which allow throughput-optimal mappings of SDFGs to Multiprocessor on Chip (MPSoC) while guaranteeing upper-bounded latencies. The correctness of our translation is justified by integrating the SDF generated code as a software-in-the-loop (SIL) and comparing its results with the results of the model-in-the-loop (MIL) simulation of reference Simulink models. The translation is demonstrated with the help of two case studies: a Transmission Controller Unit (TCU) and an Automatic Climate Control.

Abstract:With the infusion of information communication technology (ICT) and power infrastructures, the power systems is becoming a large and complex cyber physical system (CPS). In the CPS, a crucial problem for the evaluation of control systems to face disturbances/faults is transmission time delay in the communication network. In this paper, a hybrid simulation model is established to simulate the operation of CPS, and the time delay is considered in the design process of model predictive control (MPC) based low-frequency oscillation (LFO) damping controller. In the proposed model, the IEEE benchmark two areas interconnected power system with a flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) device is established in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the information systems with advanced cyber control center is established in the Microsoft Visual Studio environment. The utility communication network of 3G and fiber optic access is adopted to transmit operation and control data between the aforementioned environments, and the communication time delay is considered sufficiently. In this way, a CPS closed- loop control is formed. Finally, a case study is used to validate the established hybrid simulation model as well as the performance of cyber control center.

Abstract:Cyber physical production systems (CPPSs) exemplify the application of cyber physical systems in the manufacturing industry and are the basis for realising Industry 4.0. However, the adaptivity, reconfigurability, and interoperability of CPPSs result in high complexity and uncertainty in their design and implementation. To rectify this problem, this paper proposes a behavioural model-driven modelling method for lifecycle support of CPPSs. To this end, the general framework and operating mechanism of the proposed model are first specified and a meta-modelling language is developed based on object-oriented timed coloured knowledge Petri net. Subsequently, the hierarchical modelling and platform application of the CPPS behaviour is realised, and a laboratory-scale case study that demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed approach is presented.

Abstract:Synchronous embedded systems are becoming more and more complicated and are usually implemented with integrated hardware/software solutions. This implementation manner brings new challenges to the traditional model-driven design environments such as SCADE and STATEMATE, that supports pure hardware or software design.In this paper, we propose a co-design tool Tsmart-Edola to facilitate the system developers, and automatically generate the executable VHDL code and C code from the formal verified SyncBlock computation model. SyncBlock is a lightweight high-level system specification model with well defined syntax, simulation and formal semantics. Based on which, the graphical model editor, graphical simulator, verification translator, and code generator are implemented and seamlessly integrated into the Tsmart-Edola. For evaluation, we apply Tsmart-Edola to the design of a real-world train controller based on the international standard IEC 61375. Several critical ambiguousness or bugs in the standard are detected during formal verification of the constructed system model. Furthermore, the generated VHDL code and C code of Tsmart-Edola outperform that of the state-of-the-art tools in terms of synthesized gate array resource consumption and binary code size.

Abstract:There are various applications of Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs) which are life-critical where failure or malfunction can result in significant harm to human life, the environment, or substantial economic loss. Therefore, it is important to ensure their reliability, security, and robustness to the attacks. However, there is no widely used toolbox to simulate CPS and target security problems, especially the simulation of sensor attacks and defense strategies against them. In this work, we introduce our toolbox CPSim, a user-friendly simulation toolbox for security problems in CPS. CPSim aims to simulate common sensor attacks and countermeasures to these sensor attacks. We have implemented bias attacks, delay attacks, and replay attacks. Additionally, we have implemented various recovery-based methods against sensor attacks. The sensor attacks and recovery methods configurations can be customized with the given APIs. CPSim has built-in numerical simulators and various implemented benchmarks. Moreover, CPSim is compatible with other external simulators and can be deployed on a real testbed for control purposes.

Abstract:Debugging Cyber-Physical System (CPS) models can be extremely complex. Indeed, only the detection of a failure is insuffcient to know how to correct a faulty model. Faults can propagate in time and in space producing observable misbehaviours in locations completely different from the location of the fault. Understanding the reason of an observed failure is typically a challenging and laborious task left to the experience and domain knowledge of the designer. \n In this paper, we propose CPSDebug, a novel approach that by combining testing, specification mining, and failure analysis, can automatically explain failures in Simulink/Stateflow models. We evaluate CPSDebug on two case studies, involving two use scenarios and several classes of faults, demonstrating the potential value of our approach.

Abstract:Modeling and Simulation of Cyber-Physical Systems (MSCPS) is demanding in terms of immediate response to dynamic and complex changes of CPS. Simulation-oriented model reuse can be used to build a whole CPS model by reusing developed models in a new simulation application, which avoid repeated modeling and thus reduce the redevelopment of submodels. Model composition, one of the important methods, enables model reuse by selecting and adopting diversified integration solutions of simulation components to meet the requirements of simulation application systems. In this paper, a real-time model integration approach for global CPS modeling is proposed, which reuses developed submodels by compositing submodel nodes. Specifically, a constrained directed graph of submodels for the whole system which can meet the simulation requirements is constructed by reverse matching. Submodel properties, including co-simulation distance between submodel nodes, reuse benefit and simulation performance of model nodes, are quantified. Based on the properties, the model-integrated solution for the whole CPS simulation is retrieved throughout the model constrained digraph by the Genetic Algorithm (GA). In the experiment, the proposed method is applied to a typical model integrated computing scenario containing multiple model-integration solutions, among which the Pareto optimal solutions are retrieved. Results show that the effectiveness of the model integration method proposed in this paper is verified.
