Abstract:Abstract The nonbiting midges are tiny insects with a wide distribution around West Lake, China. In this study, the seasonal dynamics of the local dominant midge species was investigated. Phylogenetic trees of this species also were analyzed to discover its evolutionary history. Ultraviolet (UV) light traps were used for surveillance around West Lake in the period from April 2017 to November 2018. External morphological identification was performed using a stereomicroscope. Two genes of adult female midges that encoded the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) were sequenced and aligned online using GenBank nucleotide database and the Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis (MEGA) software 10.1.7. According to the field surveillance in 2017–2018, Forcipomyia bikanni Chan and LeRoux (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) is the representative dominant species of West Lake, with its activity peaking in August and October. The COI and ITS-1 gene sequences of F. bikanni (XH01-5) were 523 bp and 315 bp, respectively. The final phylogenetic tree of the COI implied that F. bikanni (XH01-5) has 97.9% significant similarity with conspecific F. bikanni (LC015045) from the adjacent Fujian Province, China (E-value ≤ 0.1%). Furthermore, the ITS-1 sequences with 98% likelihood showed the highest linkage between F. bikanni (XH01-5) and F. townsvillensis (Taylor) (HM775502-HM775504) with different branches. Thus, the final unrooted phylogenetic trees of COI and ITS-1 are essential tools for reconstructing the evolutionary histories of nonbiting midges.
Tracking the boundary between the Palaearctic and the Oriental region: new insights from dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata)

Abstract:Abstract Aim We aim to define the hotspots, faunal regions and faunal elements of O donata in E urasia. We describe the location and the extent of the transition zone between the P alaearctic and O riental realms. Location E urasia. Methods Odonata are suitable for this study because the number of species in the group is sufficient for the required analyses, their distributions are mostly known, and they are split into the highly dispersive A nisoptera and the weakly dispersive Z ygoptera. For our analyses, E urasia was classified into 63 regions, within which we determined the presence or absence of each of the 1765 O donata species. We calculated species richness maps and performed cluster analysis and principal components analysis to extract faunal regions and elements. Results Occurrence records of E urasian O donata were partitioned among three major biogeographical entities: (1) E urope, N orth A frica and N orth A sia; (2) I ndia, I ndochina and southern C hina; and (3) northern C hina, K orea and J apan. Each of these entities has further notable substructures and faunal elements, especially in Southeast A sia. The tropical rain forest region of Southeast A sia is the species diversity hotspot of odonates and has the highest number of (often localized) faunal elements. The northern border of the Oriental region reaches southernmost C hina and the southern slopes of the H imalayas, but the transitional zone between the Oriental and the P alaearctic region extends much farther north, and includes northern China, Japan and Manchuria. The lower dispersal ability of Z ygoptera compared with that of A nisoptera is mirrored in various biogeographical patterns: (1) the Western P alaearctic influence on the Eastern P alaearctic is stronger in A nisoptera than in Z ygoptera; (2) Z ygoptera have more faunal elements on islands than do A nisoptera; and (3) Z ygoptera are isolated by the Strait of G ibraltar, but do not show a finer‐grained structure of their faunal elements on the mainland. Main conclusions The less severe impact of the ice ages in Southeast A sia resulted in the evolution and survival of O donata species in many regional refugia. These faunal elements have had a greater impact on the post‐glacial colonization than previously thought and strongly influence the composition of O donata in East A sia.

Family-level diversity of Coleoptera (Insecta) from the Nanling Mountains and the Greater Bay Area, China

Abstract:Coleoptera comprise 198 families and over 440,000 species to date, of which 143 families and over 35,000 species are known in China. Of these, only 64 families have been recorded in Guangdong Province, fewer than in Hong Kong. To investigate the insect diversity of Guangdong, numerous specimens were collected from the Nanling Mountains and the Greater Bay Area using various methods, and over 200,000 specimens of Coleoptera were assigned to families. Thus, a preliminary study of beetles at the family-level in Guangdong is carried out based on the examined specimens and historical records. An updated checklist of beetle families in Guangdong increases the number of families from 64 to 111, in which Eupsilobiidae is recorded for the first time in China and a new species, Eidoreus haizhuensis sp. nov. is described here, demonstrating the importance of persistent collecting with different methods for the study of insect diversity. Habitus images of most of the beetle families occurring in Guangdong are provided. And the updated records are compared in detail with the published records, showing that more families may potentially be found in Guangdong, requiring further field work and taxonomists working on niche groups.

Abstract:Five new species and three known species of the genus Orchestina Simon, 1882 are recorded from Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province: O. clavulata Tong & Li, 2011 (♂), O. colubrina Liu, Henrard & Xu, 2019 (♂♀), O. concava Tong & Li, sp. nov. (♂), O. menglun Tong & Li, sp. nov. (♂), O. subclavulata Tong & Li, sp. nov. (♂), O. truncatula Tong & Li, 2011 (♂♀), O. wengnan Tong & Li, sp. nov. (♂) and O. xui Tong & Li, sp. nov. (♂♀). The males of O. colubrina Liu, Henrard & Xu, 2019 is described for the first time. An identification key to species of the genus Orchestina from Xishuangbanna is provided.

Abstract:Abstract Limnophyes palleocestus sp. n., L. verpus sp. n. and L. bullus sp. n. are described as male and female imago; L. orbicristatus sp. n., and L. opimus sp. n. as male imago. The new species all belong in the minimus group. L. orbicristatus occurs in the Oriental region, L. opimus in the Palaearctic region, while the other species are present in both regions with L. verpus recorded also from North Korea. New records are given for L. asquamatus Andersen, L. brachytomus (Kieffer), L. minimus (Meigen) (with a new record from Burma), and L. difficilis Brundin.

Abstract:Three new species of the water scavenger beetle genus Oocyclus Sharp, 1882 from China ( Oocyclus extensus sp. nov. , from Xizang, O. latiorificialis sp. nov. and O. ximaensis sp. nov. from Yunnan) are described and illustrated in detail. Additional faunistic data, illustrations of habitus and male genitalia, and a key to Chinese species are provided.

Abstract:An extensive mosquito survey was carried out in Hong Kong from September to October 2022, employing a variety of collection methods. Specimens were identified using a combination of morphology and mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1 (COI) barcode sequences. Twenty-nine species, including three new records, i.e., Culex bicornutus (Theobald), Culex cinctellus Edwards, and Lutzia chiangmaiensis Somboon & Harbach, were collected. Phylogenetic analysis of COI sequences of Culex annulus Theobald and Culex vishnui Theobald collected in Hong Kong and elsewhere revealed that the sequences of the two nominal species are genetically very similar and are included in the same clade. Consequently, the synonymy of Cx. annulus with Cx. vishnui is reinstated. Lutzia halifaxii (Theobald) is removed from the list of species in Hong Kong and is replaced with Lutzia vorax Edwards, the identification of which is confirmed in the present study. The record of Culex spiculothorax Bram recorded in Hong Kong is replaced with the senior synonym Culex sasai Kano, Nitahara & Awaya. The occurrence of Anopheles fluviatilis James and Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) is discussed. Finally, an updated checklist of the mosquitoes of Hong Kong, which now includes 76 species representing 14 genera, is provided, with notation of those species that vector pathogens of human diseases.
Studies on the population number of waterfowls in Zhejing Province

Abstract:The population number, density and diversity of waterfowls in Zhejiang Province were surveyed from April 1997 to July 1999, with the systematic sampling, line transect and point count methods. 7 orders, 13 families and 97 species of waterfowl with 53.6% winter visitors were recorded. Podiceps grisegena, Calidris minuta and Limicola falcinellus were found as new records in Zhejiang Province. About 92.6×104 individuals was estimated as the total number of waterfowls in Zhejiang based on the density survey. Among these waterfowls, the number of Calidris alpina was highest and there were 25 species that population number was more than 10 000 individuals. The population densities of waterfowls in the area of sea coast were higher than in the areas of continent and island. In sea coast area, there were 21 species that density was more than 1.0 ind./km2 and 5 species in island area. There was, however, no any species that density was over 1.0 ind./km2 in continent area. The intertidal mud wetlands on the coast of Zhejiang, particularly in the areas of Wenzhou Bay and Yueqing Bay were very important areas not only for Ptatalea minor to use as stopover sites, but also for Larus saundersi to use as wintering sites.
Diversity of an Odonata assemblage from a tropical dry forest in San Buenaventura, Jalisco, Mexico (Insecta, Odonata)

Abstract:The patterns of richness, diversity, and abundance of an odonate assemblage from San Buenaventura, Jalisco are presented here. A total of 1087 specimens from seven families, 35 genera and 66 species were obtained through monthly samplings of five days each during a period of one year. Libellulidae was the most diverse family (28 species), followed by Coenagrionidae (21), Gomphidae (7), Aeshnidae (6), Calopterygidae (2), Lestidae (1) and Platystictidae (1). Argia was the most speciose genus. The highest species richness and Shannon diversity were found during August and September, whereas the highest abundance was observed in June and the highest Simpson diversity was recorded in September — all of which were associated with the rainy season. The highest values of phylogenetic diversity were found from June to October. The different diversity facets of this assemblage were positively correlated with precipitation and minimum temperature, whereas maximum temperature showed no influence. In addition, we found that this odonate diversity was higher than most Mexican localities with tropical dry forest (TDF) studied. We continue our efforts to describe the patterns of richness, diversity and abundance of some insect groups associated with the tropical dry forest ecosystem in Mexico, following a latitudinal gradient of the distribution of this ecosystem in the country. Our emphasis here was to evaluate the spatial and temporal patterns of richness and diversity of an Odonata assemblage from Jalisco, Mexico.

Abstract:Insects represent one of the most diverse groups in the organism world with extremely rich species and morphological diversity, playing important roles in natural and city ecosystems. Regional compilation of insect species lists helps to clarify the richness of insect species in a region, enhances our understanding the structure and function of a local ecosystem and promotes the protection and development of insect resources. Moreover, it also serves as a valuable reference for cities with small area, large population and high urbanisation like Macao. Macao (Macau) Special Administrative Region (SAR) is situated at the Pearl River Delta on the southeast coast of mainland China. With urban development accelerating at great rate in a quite restricted area, Macao still has rich fauna, within which the insect diversity is surprisingly high.In this study, we systematically sorted out major references items of manuals or handbooks, monographs, articles, dissertations, official websites and other publicly available information sources about the insects recorded in Macao and, thus, generated a checklist of 15 orders, 166 families, 868 genera, 1,339 species and 118 subspecies. During this process, the preliminarily summarised list was re-examined to eliminate synonyms and invalid species, based on many more extensive literature reviews. Besides, spelling errors of scientific names, authors and years were corrected. Meanwhile, the catalogue revealed a different composition pattern of species diversity between orders from those of the world and China. Even based on the most conservative estimates, the number of insect species in Macao should not be lower than 3,340 species, which hints at the necessity of deeper investigations with adequate collecting in the future to achieve more comprehensive recognition and understanding of Macao's insect biodiversity.

Species Composition and Population Structure of Coccinellidae in Bamboo Forest in Zhejiang Province

Abstract:Field surveys on species of Coccinellidae were conducted in 2013 in different bamboo forest located in 7 counties and cities of Zhejiang province. Total of 20 species belonging to 16 genera of 6 subfamilies of Coccinellidae were caught. Among them, two species are new records in Zhejaing province, and 16 species were first found in bamboo forest. The result demonstrated that caught numbers were order by Scymninae, Coccinellinae, Chilocorinae, Sticholotidinae, Coccidulinae and Epilachninae. The dominant species were Stethorus chengi and Calvia muiri. The common species were Exochomus nigromarginatus, Nephus bilinearis, Chilocorus kuwanae, Scymnus dichorionicus, Stethorus aptus, Harmonia axyridis.

Abstract:The Nanling Mountains is one of the sixteen biodiversity hotspots in China. It divides the central and southern regions of the country. This paper documents the diversity of flea beetles in the Nanling Mountains based on a comprehensive insect biodiversity survey from 2020 to 2022. Three new species of the genus Minota Kutschera, 1859 viz. M. cuiae Zhang, Ruan, Liang & Yang sp. nov. (Guangxi), M. maoer Zhang, Ruan, Liang & Yang sp. nov. (Guangxi), and M. bimaculata Zhang, Ruan, Liang & Yang sp. nov. (Jiangxi) from the Nanling Mountains are described and illustrated. A checklist and key to the Chinese Minota species are provided.

Abstract:The Gaoligong Mountains, located in the western part of China’s Yunnan Province adjoining northern Myanmar, harbor a striking diversity of species and endemism. Previous studies have shown that amphibian diversity in this region remains underestimated. A field survey carried out in 2023 oversaw a collection of eight Xenophrys specimens from the Tongbiguan Provincial Nature Reserve, Yunnan Province, China. Subsequent molecular analyses revealed two distinct and previously undescribed lineages. Based on morphological evidence, we formally describe one of the lineages as a new species and tentatively assign the other lineage to X. sp. due to the absence of adult specimens for examination. Our results bring the total number of Xenophrys species to 29 and the number of Xenophrys species known to occur in China to 11. Furthermore, our study reveals that five species and putative species of Xenophrys ( X. dehongensis , X. glandulosa , X. periosa , X. yingjiangensis sp. nov. , and X. sp.) exhibit sympatric distribution. These findings highlight the need for future research to investigate the mechanisms of sympatric coexistence in Xenophrys . In addition, our study confirms that the amphibian diversity of the Gaoligong Mountains is undoubtedly underestimated. As a result, continued exploration of amphibians in the future is necessary to obtain a clearer understanding of the overall biodiversity in this region.

Abstract:Tibetan Plateau is one of the most typical areas of biodiversity in the world because of its unique environmental and regional units, which breed unique biological communities and concentrate on many unique and rare wild animals and plants. Research on Chironomidae in the Tibetan Plateau is relatively weak. At present, the identification of Chironomidae species mainly depends on male adults, while identification of larvae and pupae is relatively difficult and there is less research on them.During the investigations of insect diversity in the Tibetan Plateau, larval and pupal stages of Orthocladius nitidoscutellatus Lundström, 1915 and Psectrocladius nevalis Akhrorov, 1977 were described and illustrated. Matching and identification of larval and pupal stages were based on DNA barcodes. Neighbour-joining trees were reconstructed, based on known Orthocladius and Psectrocladius COI DNA barcodes, respectively.

Non-native fish of the Upper Irtysh and the Ulungur Rivers in China

Abstract:Background: The Chinese section of the Irtysh River Basin and the Ulungur River Basin, two major river basins of the Altay region, are located at the northwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. As an international river, the Chinese section has seven state-level protected fish and seven local-level protected species as well. Many more commercial species have been introduced from eastern China and other countries, accompanied by some low-value and small-sized fish in recent decades. The non-native fish species have already threatened these protected fish. This study investigated the distribution of non-native fish species in the Chinese section of the Irtysh River Basin and the Ulungur River Basin. The basic data for the biodiversity conservation and the information of the non-native fish in these two river basins were gathered. New information: There are a lot of studies on native fish in the Chinese section of the Irtysh River Basin and Urungur River Basin in China, but there is a lack of studies on non-native fish. Thirteen non-native fish belonging to four orders, nine families and 12 genera were collected in this study. The study includes one dataset. The dataset presents taxonomy, distribution, water body and location for each of the non-native fish collected from the Chinese section of the Irtysh River Basin and the Ulungur River Basin. Our study has found that the proportion of native species has declined, while the number of non-native species has increased from 2013 to 2022. The information we provided could help to develop an international strategy for the protection of aquatic biodiversity.

Abstract:A new species of armoured scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae: Aspidiotinae: Odonaspidini), Odonaspis renhuaiensis Chen, Jian & Xing sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Guizhou Province, China. The type specimens are deposited at the Institute of Entomology, Guizhou University, Guiyang, China. An identification key based on the morphology of adult females is provided to separate all the species of Odonaspis Leonardi, 1897.

Abstract:The biodiversity value of river-oxbow lake systems in high plateau peatland has been little recognized, and there are many gaps in our understanding of their ecology. In this study, we investigated the river-oxbow lake system of the Bai River basin, the main tributary of the Yellow River Source in the Zoige wetland from 2015 to 2016, in attempt to show how the environmental variations, especially hydrological connectivity and macrophyte biomass in the river-oxbow lake system influenced macroinvertebrates. Habitat patches were investigated in 11 river cross-sections and 18 oxbow lakes in the Bai River basin. Through hierarchical clustering and non-metric multidimensional scaling, four main types of habitats were identified in the river-oxbow lake system in the plateau: sand-bed river, cobble-bed river, sparse-macrophyte oxbow lake, and luxuriant-macrophyte oxbow lake. The luxuriant-macrophyte oxbows were characterized by high dissolved oxygen concentrations, alkalinity, and higher macroinvertebrate richness, density, biomass, and the Improved Shannon-Wiener Index in comparison to the other habitat types. Additionally, influential patterns of environmental variables on macroinvertebrates were analyzed using redundancy analysis. Lasso regression models were established to describe how macroinvertebrate density responded to macrophyte biomass and other variables, and how macrophyte biomass responded to hydrological connectivity and oxbow size. It was revealed that reduced hydrological connectivity and reduced oxbow size played important roles in increasing the biomass of submerged macrophyte, and dense macrophyte was directly responsible for the high biodiversity of macroinvertebrates. Different from the commonly believed unimodal influential pattern that medium hydrological connectivity supports the highest biodiversity in oxbow lakes reported in previous studies, macroinvertebrates in the high plateau river-oxbow lake systems benefited from low connectivity and reduced size. Oxbow lakes, especially those covered with luxuriant macrophytes, diversified the macroinvertebrate assemblages and enhanced primary consumer biomass at the regional scale.
[Community structure of Chironomid larvae and their indicative significance for water quality in streams of Xianju National Park, China]

Abstract:In August 2016, 59 sites of 13 streams in Xianju National Park were surveyed to explore the community structure of Chironomid larvae and their indicative significance for water quality. Water quality of the streams was evaluated based on Hilsenhoff biological index. The results showed that there were 37 clean sites, 19 mild polluted sites and three moderated polluted sites in Xianju National Park. We identified a total of 86 species of Chironomid larvae, belonging to 51 genera and four subfamilies, including 37 species in 19 genera of Chironominae; 35 species in 21 genera of Orthcladiinae; 12 species in 9 genera of Tanypodinae, two species in two genera of Diamesinae. Chironominae accounted for 40.3% of Chironomid larval density. Tanypodinae and Orthcladiinae were almost similar in Chironomid larval density, respectively accounted for 30% and 29.4% of the total. Diamesinae accounted for 0.3% of total Chironomid larval density. Conchapelopia sp. was the overwhelming dominant species and Polypedilum flavum, Rheocricotopus sp., Cricotupus vierriensis, Rheotanytarsus muscicola and Corynoneura carriana were the dominant species of Chironomid larvae. The result of indicator species analysis showed that Cricotupus vierriensis, Nanocladius dichromus, Tanytarsus formosanus, Tanytarsus mendex were indicator species of moderated pollution water, and that Rheocricotopus sp. was the indicator species of clean state water.
Ecological Influences Affecting the Distribution of Larval Chironomid Communities in the Lakes on Yunnan Plateau, Sw China

Abstract:Surface sediment samples were collected from 35 lakes on the Yunnan Plateau as part of an investigation into the relationship between surface sediment subfossil chironomid distribution and lake environmental variables. This region of China is unique as it contains large temperature gradients, from the subtropics to the foothills of the Himalaya, but also contains lakes that have been heavily impacted by anthropogenic activities. The chironomid communities were dominated by 8 taxa, which together accounted for 77.7 % of the fauna. The statistical analyses indicated that mean July air temperature and water depth were the most significant variables affecting the distribution of chironomids across these sites. After removing 3 major outliers from axis 1 in the ordination data set, temperature lost its significance but water depth and reductions in bottom dissolved oxygen (DO) were still found to be significant. In addition the diversity of the dataset was found to be low compared with other chironomid training sets throughout the world, suggesting that this region in China has different characteristics governing the abundance and distribution of chironomids compared with other parts of the world, hence the need for regional training sets within China. This is the first subfossil chironomid data set from this region and the understanding of key environmental influences on contemporary faunas will aid interpretations of palaeolimnological data sets to reconstruct past trends and magnitude of environmental change over a range of timescales.
Chironomids (Insecta, Diptera, Chironomidae) from alpine lakes in the Eastern Carpathians with comments on newly-recorded species from Ukraine

Abstract:Background: The first summarising checklist of Ukrainian Chironomidae (Insecta, Diptera) consisted of 302 species. Compared to other European countries, it is obvious that the real chironomid diversity of Ukraine has not been fully documented and greater effort is needed to discover the actual richness of this family. Thus, our survey focused on the chironomid fauna of some alpine lakes situated above the treeline in the Ukrainian Carpathians (a part of the Eastern Carpathians) aiming to contribute to the knowledge of the Ukrainian chironomid fauna and create the basis for more comprehensive neo- and palaeolimnological studies of these, regionally, little-known ecosystems. New information: In total, 34 species/taxa, belonging to 22 genera and 4 subfamilies were collected in June 2019. Ten species were recorded for the first time in Ukraine: Zavrelimyia melanura, Acamptocladius reissi, Cricotopusspeciosus, Cricotopuscurtus, Heterotrissocladius marcidus, Orthocladius dentifer, Psectrocladiusoligosetus, Polypedilumuncinatum, Paratanytarsus laccophilus and Tanytarsus bathophilus. The occurrence of six species previously considered as "doubtfully present" in Ukraine was finally confirmed. Generally, the surveyed lakes have a unique composition of chironomids consisting of a mixture of species typical for cold alpine lakes and acidic ponds situated at lower altitudes.
