Abstract:The paper studies the problem of distributed transmit beamforming with autonomous and self-organizing mobile antennas. The objective is to design a distributed algorithm for a network of autonomous mobile robots with carry-on antennas so that they can form a functional antenna array and cooperatively transmit messages to a remote station. Note that the spatial relationship of the antennas also contributes to the directionality of the reception or transmission of a signal. In the paper, by exploiting the mobility of the antennas, we show that optimal beamforming can be achieved by reconfiguring the spatial relationship of the mobile antennas in a completely distributed fashion. A probability-based coordination scheme utilizing only the signal-to-ratio (SNR) feedback from the receiver is presented to update the positions of the antennas ensuring that they eventually converge to a global optimal configuration maximizing the SNR at the receiver. It is noticed that the spatial configuration of the antennas can also address the phase synchronization issue in transmit beamforming.

Abstract:Distributed antenna system (DAS) has been widely regarded as an extension of multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology because it has superior ability in reducing other-cell interference (OCI), as well as improving coverage and capacities in a multi-cell environment. This paper analyzes and compares the downlink ergodic capacity performance between the traditional distributed antenna system (TDAS) and the newly emerging distributed horizontal antenna system (DHAS) using (1) the blanket transmission scheme (BTS), (2) the single selection transmission scheme (SSTS) or (3) the conventional transmission scheme (CTS) in a multi-cell environment for the downlink.

Abstract:The increasing demand of mobile multimedia services has motivated the use of new communication technologies that could improve the utilization of spectrum resource. In this paper, we study a mobile communication network that adopts phased array technology to improve the reuse of spatial spectrum resource, in which each base station (BS) communicates with multiple mobile users (MUs) simultaneously in the same frequency channel by applying beamforming. We understand from analysis that in such a network, the parallel communications supported by phased array technology could produce interference to each other. Moreover, the interference level largely depends on the angles of beams. We then propose a novel networking method that let a MU select a proper BS according to both distance, which largely decides receiving power, and the beam angle, which is the main factor that decides co-channel interference, as compared to conventional networking scheme that requests a MU to select a proper BS simply according to distance. Both analysis results and simulation results show that the proposed scheme obtains advantage over the conventional scheme in terms of the network throughput.

Abstract:In this paper, the integrated control and optimization problem of mobile cooperative communication clusters is considered. Each communication channel is modeled by its Shannon capacity outage probability. Hence, connectivity is maintained if the outage probability is less than a certain threshold. The objective of the communication network is to not only maintain communication quality but also extend the coverage. An information theory based performance index is defined to quantify this control objective. Unlike most of the existing results, the proposed cooperative control design does not assume the knowledge of any gradient (of the performance index). Rather, a distributed extremum seeking cooperative control is designed to optimize the connectivity and coverage of each of mobile communication nodes by feeding back only the motion information of its neighboring nodes and by measuring the current performance of its communication channel(s). The proposed approach retains all the advantages of cooperative control (such as requiring only local feedback and tolerating switching topologies) and searches autonomously for the optimal spacings based on typical communication models. Simulation results demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:This paper investigates the distributed power allocation problem for coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmissions in distributed antenna systems (DAS). Traditional duality-based optimization techniques cannot be directly applied to this problem, because the non-strict concavity of the CoMP transmission's achievable rate with respect to the transmission power induces that the local power allocation subproblems have non-unique optimum solutions. We propose a distributed power allocation algorithm to resolve this non-strict concavity difficulty. This algorithm only requires local information exchange among neighboring base stations serving the same user, and is thus flexible with respect to network size and topology. The step-size parameters of this algorithm are determined by only local user access relationship (i.e., the number of users served by each antenna), but do not rely on channel coefficients. Therefore, the convergence speed of this algorithm is quite robust to channel fading. We rigorously prove that this algorithm converges to an optimum solution of the power allocation problem. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed power allocation algorithm.

Abstract:The energy efficiency of coordinated transmissions in multi-cell distributed antenna systems (DAS) was analyzed with a focus on the antenna element correlation within each distributed antenna cluster to maximize the system energy efficiency through inter-cell coordinated optimization of the input covariance matrices. The system uses only the slowly varying channel statistics including the large-scale channel state information at the transmitter and the transmit antenna element correlation characteristics. The optimization problem is non-convex and, therefore, is hard to solve. The method of successive Taylor expansions was used to recast the problem into a succession of quasi-convex fractional optimization sub-problems, which were then further converted to tractable equivalent convex forms via the fractional programming approach. An iterative scheme was then used to address the original optimization problem. Simulations show that this scheme provides improved system energy efficiencies compared to existing schemes.
Efficient Antenna Allocation Algorithms in Millimetre Wave Wireless Communications.

Abstract:Recently, a considerable research interest has grown up in the millimetre wave wireless system as the most promising technologies in the next generation communication. Since high-frequency channels of the millimetre wave are easily attenuated in space, beamforming technology relying on the massive multi-input-multi-output system is introduced to transmit the millimetre wave in a very narrow directional beam, so as to greatly improve the transmit efficiency. Then a challenging problem lies in that how to optimise the overall throughput by allocating the antenna resources to different mobile users in the massive MIMO antenna system. In this study, the authors handle such a difficult problem in two different cases. They first begin with the one-direction case, i.e. all sub-arrays are deployed in several parallel rows along the edge of a rectangle antenna array. They decompose the problem and solve it gradually. Then they generalise the authors' result to the two-dimensional case, where the sub-arrays can be deployed in orthogonal directions. They apply the similar scheme, decompose the problem and solve each sub-problem progressively. Both NP-hard problems are solved with time efficient approximation algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms in different cases.
Optimization and Analysis of Wireless Powered Multi-antenna Cooperative Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a three-node cooperative wireless powered communication system consisting of a multi-antenna hybrid access point (H-AP) and a single-antenna relay and a single-antenna user. The energy constrained relay and user first harvest energy in the downlink and then the relay assists the user using the harvested power for information transmission in the uplink. The optimal energy beamforming vector and the time split between harvest and cooperation are investigated. To reduce the computational complexity, suboptimal designs are also studied, where closed-form expressions are derived for the energy beamforming vector and the time split. For comparison purposes, we also present a detailed performance analysis in terms of the achievable outage probability and the average throughput of an intuitive energy beamforming scheme, where the H-AP directs all the energy towards the user. The findings of the paper suggest that implementing multiple antennas at the H-AP can significantly improve the system performance, and the closed-form suboptimal energy beamforming vector and time split yields near optimal performance. Also, for the intuitive beamforming scheme, a diversity order of (N+1)/2 can be achieved, where N is the number of antennas at the H-AP.

Abstract:Relay selection and subchannel pairing are important issues in OFDM based cooperative wireless systems to improve the system performance and reliability. Most of the relay selection schemes in modern literatures are centralized under the assumption that the overall channel condition is known at the source node, each relay node and the destination node which is impractical. In this paper, we will propose a low computational complexity distributed relay selection and subchannel pairing algorithms under limited channel state information. Through the computer simulation, we found that under the limited channel state information constraint, the proposed algorithm can achieve a much better system performance than the traditional relay selection and subchannel matching schemes and earn most of the system performance of the optimal one.

Abstract:In this letter, we address the problem of downlink power allocation for the generalized distributed antenna system (DAS) with cooperative clusters. Considering practical applications, we assume that only the large-scale channel state information is available at the transmitter. The power allocation scheme is investigated with the target of ergodic achievable sum rate maximization. Based on some approximations and the Rayleigh Quotient Theory, the simple selective power allocation scheme is derived for the low SNR scenario and the high SNR scenario, respectively. The methods are applicable in practice due to their low complexity.

In this paper, three cooperative schemes are proposed with the antennas sharing among multiple nodes to achieve cooperative diversity in wireless networks. The proposed schemes could be applied in two practical relay scenarios in which each node has one antenna or two antennas respectively. The simulations show that these schemes can achieve better performance to combat the channel corrupt. And the techniques can be applied in wireless cooperative communications.

Abstract:Device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks is a promising technology for improving network resource utilization, and cooperative communication technology is usually used to mitigate the interference caused by D2D communication. Due to the additional signal processing cost introduced by cooperative communication, the cellular links who have the exclusive usage right of the network spectrum can charge the D2D links a fee for spectrum usage to enhance their profit. In this paper, we propose a contract-based cooperative spectrum sharing mechanism to exploit transmission opportunities for the D2D links and meanwhile achieve the maximum profit of the cellular links. We first design a cooperative relaying scheme that employs superposition coding at both the cellular transmitters and D2D transmitters. The cooperative relaying scheme can maximize the data rate of the D2D links without deteriorating the performance of the cellular links. Then, we employ a contract-theoretic framework to model the spectrum trading process based on the cooperative relaying scheme, and derive the optimal power-payment contracts for the cellular links under both the cases that the private information (i.e., channel quality) of the D2D links is continuous and discrete using tools from continuous-and discrete-time optimal control theories, respectively. Analytic and numerical results confirm the efficiency of the proposed spectrum sharing mechanism.

Abstract:Device-to-device (D2D) communication in cellular networks is a promising concept that permits cooperation among mobile devices not only to increase data throughput but also to enhance localization services. In those networks, the allocation of transmitting power plays a critical role in determining network lifetime and localization accuracy. Meanwhile, it is a challenging task for implementation in cooperative D2D networks, since each device has only imperfect estimates of local network parameters in distributed settings. In this paper, we establish an optimization framework for robust power allocation in cooperative wireless network localization, and develop distributed power allocation strategies. In particular, we decompose the power allocation problem into infrastructure and cooperation phases, show the sparsity property of the optimal power allocation, and develop efficient power allocation strategies. Simulation results show that these strategies can achieve significant performance improvement in localization accuracy compared to the uniform strategies.

Abstract:Satellite and terrestrial integrated mobile communication systems (STICS) is proposed to construct economical and highly-reliable communication networks. One of the promising approaches to share the frequency spectrum in STICS is dynamic spectrum assignment, which dynamically divides the spectrum into two parts according to the traffic demand of terrestrial service and satellite service. As smaller bandwidth can be allocated to satellite networks, it is required to increase the bandwidth per cell by decreasing the frequency reuse factor, which results in larger inter-cell interference. This is much worse for users at the edge of the satellite cell as the coverage of satellite beam is much flatter than that of terrestrial cell. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a scheme of dynamic channel assignment scheme with cooperative beam forming, in which adjacent beams will serve the edge users cooperatively. Simulation results show that this scheme can improve the SINR of edge users significantly.
Downlink Performance and Capacity of Distributed Antenna System in Multi-User Scenario

Abstract:Recent studies show that introducing DAS into the cellular system can reduce the inter-cell interference and achieves a non-trivial capacity increase over the conventional cellular system. On the other hand, base station cooperative processing is explored to address the inter-cell interference mitigation problem in the cellular system. But most of the analytical work is based on the single-user scenario. This paper provides a generalized information theoretic analysis to illuminate the downlink performance limits of DAS in the multi-user cellular system with antenna module cooperative processing. A comparison of several transmit schemes is given: scheduling the best user, scheduling multiple users simultaneously and scheduling multiple best users. It is demonstrated that with simple linear processing at the transmitters scheduling multiple users simultaneously achieves a tremendous system capacity increase over scheduling the best user. This is because antenna module cooperative processing can mitigate the inter-user interference effectively and the spatial degrees of freedom are fully exploited. Furthermore, when the number of users is much larger than the number of remote antenna modules, scheduling multiple best users can attain the multi-user diversity gain which leads to an increase of the sum capacity. These analytical results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:Cooperative communication(or cooperative diversity) is a new spatial diversity technique.Users share their antennas to construct the virtual antenna array.Compared to traditional MIMO systems,cooperative communication does not need multiple antennas at terminal devices,and therefore significantly reduces the implemental complexity and cost.This paper considers cooperative user selection schemes.In particular,we compare the symmetric and asymmetric cooperation schemes in several aspects including outage probability, signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) gain,diversity and multiplexing tradeoff,and impacts of position deviation.Based on the comparison,we discuss how to choose the cooperation scheme with respect to actual application background.
