Abstract:In this paper, a novel subspace method is proposed to reconstruct the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (IPNCM) according to its definition, which can fundamentally eliminate the signal of interest (SOI) component from the sample covariance matrix (SCM). The central ideal is that each interference steering vector (SV) is estimated by the vector lying within the intersection of two subspaces while its power obtained by using the Capon spectral estimator. The first subspace is the interference subspace and it is obtained from each interference covariance matrix term calculated by integrating over each interference angular sector. The second one is the signal-interference subspace got from the SCM. Then a more precise IPNCM is reconstructed based on these accurate estimations. Meanwhile the signal covariance matrix is calculated by integrating over the SOI angular sector so that a new SV estimation of SOI can be obtained from its prime eigenvector. Finally, based on the new IPNCM and the SV of SOI, a novel robust beamformer is formulated to improve the robustness against array model mismatches. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed beamformer outperforms other existing reconstruction-based beamformers and almost attains the optimal performance in both low and high input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) cases.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of look direction error in the desired signal, a robust adaptive beamforming method based on covariance matrix reconstruction is proposed. The sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) is performed to acquire the true signal direction and the spatial spectrum simultaneously. Furthermore, the SBL spatial spectrum is used to reconstruct the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix. Compared with other reconstruction algorithms, this approach can realize the position estimation without any optimization procedures. Theoretical analysis, simulation results, and water pool experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Widely linear (WL) robust adaptive beamforming exhibits superior performance by effectively leveraging the additional noncircularity information. However, existing studies focus solely on the noncircular (NC) impinging interferences, often overlooking main-lobe interferences and suffering from high computational complexity. To tackle these challenges, this article introduces a generalized WL sparse reconstruction (GWLSR) beamforming framework that addresses the general scenario where the impinging interferences consist of mixed circular and NC signals from a sparse reconstruction perspective. The framework considers two variants, GWLSR(1) and GWLSR(2), to accommodate circular and NC signal of interest, respectively. Within this framework, we can estimate the power of a larger number of interferences in the general scenario, supported by a root finding-based approach for direction-of-arrival (DOA) and NC phase (NCP) estimation. We then reconstruct the conjugate augmented interference-plus-noise covariance by leveraging the estimated DOAs, NCPs, and power associated with the interferences. The proposed beamformers are computational efficient as all the involved procedures can be formulated using close-form expressions. In addition, they can effectively suppress main-lobe interferences. Simulation examples are provided to illustrate the advantages of the proposed beamformers.

Abstract:The interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) reconstruction-based adaptive beamforming methods have been successful in preventing signal self-nulling. However, their computational complexity is generally high, which cannot be neglected. In this paper, we propose a data-driven adaptive beamforming method named Deep-Reconstruction, which utilizes deep learning to establish a direct mapping from the sample covariance matrix to the inverse of the INCM. Specifically, we devise a Unet-based fully convolutional network to extract the low-dimensional representations of interferences and noise from the sample covariance matrix. Meanwhile, a conjugate symmetrization layer is designed to maintain a Hermitian structure of the network output. As a result, an accurate estimation of the inverse of the INCM can be obtained for the beamformer design. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively avoid signal self-nulling, while achieving a higher computational efficiency as compared to the traditional methods.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel narrowband interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) reconstruction method is proposed for robust adaptive beamforming (RAB). To enhance the effectiveness of the INCM reconstruction, we offer a prior selection of the dimension of a quasi-signal subspace (QSS) based on the signal subspace proximity employing two subsample covariance matrices (SSCMs). The QSS herein can provide estimations of all relevant factors of interference for the INCM. Moreover, by employing the eigenvectors of the SSCM, the noise power can be estimated precisely through a nonlinear regularization scheme. Finally, the signal-of-interest steering vector is corrected by an optimization problem exploiting the reconstructed INCM. The proposed RAB method can capitalize on the benefits of the QSS without prior knowledge of the number of sources. The results of the simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of various mismatches.

Abstract:Recently, a new robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) technique was proposed to remove the signal of interest (SOI) component from the sample covariance matrix based on interference-plus-noise covariance matrix reconstruction, which utilizes the Capon spectrum estimator integrated over a region separated from the direction of the SOI. However, the extreme condition of the reconstruction-based technique, that the precise information about the array structure is known in advance, is almost impossible in practice. In this paper, a novel method to reconstruct the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix is proposed. Considering the imprecise prior information about the array structure, which means that the array may be uncalibrated, we use an annulus uncertainty set to constrain the steering vectors of the interferences. Then we integrate the Capon spectrum over the surface of the annulus, by which we can obtain the reconstructed interference matrix without containing the SOI. Since the integral interval is a high-dimensional domain, which is very difficult to solve, we use a discrete sum method to calculate the integral approximately. With the reconstructed interference-plus-noise matrix, the nominal steering vector can be corrected via maximizing the beamformer output power by solving a quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem. The previous reconstruction method can be seen as a special case of the proposed one. The main advantage is that the proposed algorithm is robust against unknown arbitrary-type mismatches. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Adaptive beamformers are sensitive to model mismatch, especially when the desired signal is present in the training data. In this paper, we reconstruct the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix in a sparse way, instead of searching for an optimal diagonal loading factor for the sample covariance matrix. Using sparsity, the interference covariance matrix can be reconstructed as a weighted sum of the outer products of the interference steering vectors, the coefficients of which can be estimated from a compressive sensing (CS) problem. In contrast to previous works, the proposed CS problem can be effectively solved by use of a priori information instead of using l"1-norm relaxation or other approximation algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed adaptive beamformer is almost always equal to the optimal value.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel robust adaptive beamforming algorithm is addressed to improve the robustness against steering vector random errors (SVREs), which eliminates the signal of interest (SOI) component from the sample covariance matrix (SCM), based on interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (IPNCM) reconstruction over annulus uncertainty sets. Firstly, several annulus uncertainty sets are used to constrain the steering vectors (SVs) of both interferences and the SOI. Additionally the IPNCM is reconstructed according to its definition by estimating each interference SV over its own annulus uncertainty set via the subspace projection algorithm. Meanwhile, the SOI SV is estimated as the prime eigenvector of the SOI covariance matrix term calculated over its own annulus uncertainty set. Finally, a novel robust beamformer is formulated based on the new IPNCM and the SOI SV, and it outperforms other existing reconstruction-based beamformers when the SVREs exist, especially in low input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) cases, which is proved through the simulation results.

Abstract:The performance of adaptive beamformers is susceptible to the steering vector mismatches and covariance matrix uncertainties. In contrast to traditional subspace methods, the proposed subspace method is robust against model mismatches. The signal-plus-interference covariance matrix (SICM) is reconstructed by projecting the enhanced covariance matrix onto the signal-plus-interference subspace which is formed using the property of covariance matrix. The array steering vector is adjusted by projecting the presumed steering vector onto the signal subspace which is structured using the major eigenvectors of the enhanced covariance matrix. The major eigenvectors are selected when the correlation coefficient between the presumed steering vector and the eigenvector exceeds a certain threshold. By combining the reconstructed SICM with the adjusted array steering vector, the proposed beamformer can provide robust performance. In comparison with many existing robust techniques, the proposed method performs well in both high and low signal-to-noise ratio scenarios. Several examples are carried out to illustrate the superiority of our method.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a subspace projection and covariance matrix reconstruction (SPCMR) algorithm for adaptive beamforming to improve the robustness against large SV mismatch. The SPCMR algorithm consists of two parts: projection subspaces estimation and interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) reconstruction. Specifically, we estimate two projection subspaces containing the signal component and obtain the signal SV from their intersection. The first projection subspace is estimated from the constructed signal covariance matrix via the distortionless responses principle. The second one is gotten according to the subspace proximity between the nominal signal SV and the eigenvectors of the sample covariance matrix. Subsequently, the interference SVs are estimated by using the Capon spatial estimator, and each interference power is obtained via the oblique projectors. After that, an accurate INCM is reconstructed, and the SPCMR beamformer is proposed. The simulation results show that the SPCMR algorithm is robust to several model mismatches and outperforms other adaptive algorithms.

Abstract:The majority of the existing adaptive beamforming methods utilize the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) to prevent the signal of interest (SOI) from being suppressed. However, the removal of the SOI component will lead to a decrease in the performance at low input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, a novel interference sources covariance matrix (ISCM) diagonal loading method is proposed to improve the robustness of the beamformer. First of all, we employ the peaks of the Capon spectrum to calculate the corresponding nominal steering vectors (SVs), and then accurate SVs of the SOI and interferences are obtained by subspace projection. Instead of utilizing the orthogonality, the proposed method preserves the non-orthogonality between SVs to estimate an accurate signal-plus-interference sources covariance matrix (SISCM), and then obtains a reconstructed array covariance matrix (RACM). Furthermore, we conduct diagonal loading on ISCM and construct a modified array covariance matrix (MACM) to keep the interference-to-signal ratio (ISR) after loading at a proper large value. Simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method, and indicate that the proposed method not only has the low computational complexity but also performs well at both low and high input SNR.

Abstract:A novel robust algorithm for the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (IPNCM) reconstruction according to its definition is addressed. Unlike the previous works, each interference steering vector (SV) is estimated as the prime eigenvector of the interference covariance matrix obtained by integrating over each interference angular sector and its power through the Capon spectral estimator is also estimated. Then, a more precise IPNCM based on these accurate estimates is reconstructed. In addition, the same idea is used to estimate the SV of the signal of interest over the signal angular sector. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed beamforming has much more robustness against the large look direction errors of the interferences, and can attain the optimal beamformer in both high and low signal-to-noise ratio cases with low computational complexity.

Abstract:Adaptive beamforming methods are known to be sensitive to array model mismatch, and the obvious performance degradation can take place especially when the desired signal is present in the received data. Recently, a series of robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) methods based on interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) reconstruction have been proposed, which utilize the Capon spectrum estimator integrated over a region separated from the direction of the desired signal. However, these methods do not take into account the effects of the reconstruction errors. In this paper, a novel method named double-robust adaptive beamforming based on INCM reconstruction and norm-bounded constraints is proposed to combat arbitrary unknown array mismatches. The essence of the proposed method is considering the inevitable errors not only of the reconstructed INCM but also of the estimated steering vector (SV), and then summing up these errors as norm-bounded error matrices. A closed-form solution of the proposed method is finally provided. Simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:Adaptive beamforming can efficiently contract interference and noise. Due to high sensitivity of the beamformer to model mismatch, the capability of interference reduction will critically degrade when the signal model mismatch occurs, particularly when the sampling sequence contains the desired signal. For the purpose of enhancing the robustness of beamformers to signal model mismatch, we propose a new robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) method. Firstly, the precise steering vector (SV) associating with the desired signal is estimated by employing the minimum norm of subspace projection (MNSP) approach. Secondly, the nominal interference SVs are estimated via the maximum entropy power spectrum. Subsequently, the corrected interference SVs and powers are obtained by oblique projection. Finally, the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) is reconstructed, and the proposed RAB is obtained. Multiple simulations are carried out and demonstrate the robustness of the proposed RAB method.

Abstract:The conventional beamforming algorithms are sensitive to steering vector (SV) mismatch in practical terms, especially when the desired signal is present in training snapshots. It affects the received quality of the desired signal and the suppression of the interference, resulting in performance degradation. In this paper, a robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) algorithm based on interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (IPNCM) reconstruction against SV mismatch is proposed to address the problem. The proposed method performs a reconstruction-based IPNCM with respect to the Capon spectral estimator integrated over discrete angular sectors associated with the interferences. Subsequently, the eigenspace-based (ESB) projection method is employed to perform the correction of SV mismatch error by its projection on the signal plus interference subspace. The new method works on the refinement of the performance in high input signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and the desired signal SV mismatch as compared to most state-of-the-art RAB techniques, and it is able to provide similar performance close to the optimal value. These significant advantages are verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel robust adaptive beamforming algorithm by constructing subspaces through the robust Capon beamformer (RCB) principle. The proposed algorithm consists of two steps: reconstructing the interference-plusnoise covariance matrix (IPNCM) and estimating the steering vector of the desired signal. In the first step, we improve the constructed interference-noise subspace by the RCB principle and obtain the signal-interference subspace by the sample covariance matrix. Then the steering vectors of the interference signals are estimated by the projection of these two subspaces, and the IPNCM is reconstructed by the combination of these steering vectors. In the second step, we use the RCB principle to improve the estimation of the signal subspace and then take its principal component as the estimation of the steering vector for the desired signal. The adoption of the RCB principle improves the accuracy of the reconstructed IPNCM and the estimated steering vector of the desired signal; hence this strategy improves the overall performance of the beamformer. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed beamformer outperforms the other conventional beamformers in output signal-to-interferenceplus-noise ratio under various mismatched models.

Abstract:Based on the reconstruction of the augmented interference plus -noise (IPN) covariance matrix (CM) and the estimation of the desired signal's extended steering vector (SV), we propose a novel robust widely linear (WL) beamforming algorithm. Firstly, an extension of the iterative adaptive approach (IAA) algorithm is employed to acquire the spatial spectrum. Secondly, the IAA spatial spectrum is adopted to reconstruct the augmented signal-plus-noise (SPN) CM and the augmented IPNCM. Thirdly, the extended SV of the desired signal is estimated by using the iterative robust Capon beamformer with adaptive uncertainty level (AU-IRCB). Compared with several representative robust WL beamforming algorithms, simulation results are provided to confirm that the proposed method can achieve a better performance and has a much lower complexity.

Abstract:The performance of the traditional Capon beamformer degrades sharply when the signal of interest (SOI) appears in the training data. To reduce the impact of SOI on the Capon beamformer, two methods for the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) reconstruction are proposed in this letter. The proposed-1 method is based on the integral of the Capon spectrum without the residual noise power. In the proposed-2 method, the interference power is estimated via the orthogonality between different sparse steering vectors (SVs) to project the sample covariance matrix for the INCM reconstruction. Meanwhile, the inverse of INCM is obtained by eigenvalue decomposition and the SV of SOI is updated by the principal eigenvector of the reconstructed SOI covariance matrix (SCM). Simulation results show that the proposed methods are robust against some mismatch errors.
